I am canadian, i broke my ankle in hawaii on vacation and had to go to the ER. The bill for my xrays, fluids, sedation required to reset my ankle and having an ortho set my ankle, was 10 thousand usd. If we didnt have travel insurance , that would have created enormous financial pressure on us. I then flew home, had surgery the morning after arriving at the hospital, stayed in the hospital several nights. Cost to me was zero dollars. Do we have an overburdened system? Yes. But i was not bankrupted by my surgery and hospital stay- that helped with my mental health and also being able to access rehab for my injury. Justina, you are absolutely right about everything, however, even if you have all these things you cannot make all people understand that they need to exercise or eat properly. I think education is key, but as an RN, I am regularly astounded by the number of people who are non-compliant (diabetics, cardiac patients), and otherwise healthy people who don’t even go for a walk every day.
Oh absolutely! People still have free will to do whatever they want. But I have so many clients who would love to make more of an investment in their health but can't due to finances, time restrictions, location, etc. Thank you for sharing your experience as an RN!
a walkable city is essential, parks (safe parks) and recreations, bikes lane, share bike program, public transport ..... people need to let go of their car and if they do without going to the gym they can easily loose 5 to 15 pounds. it's crazy how just walking from point A to B can make a difference in general health. Also rethink gym class in school and high school and add more time in the school program. a fit society is where the government (yes it is political) from the municipality (cities) to the state and-or provinces to the federal to vote laws or fond programs that will help the general population to have better environments to be more active and eat better etc. In Montréal for the last 4 to 5 years the city add- build thousands of bike lane, and we have a share bike program. People complained, news were making a big thing about it how people hated it well, the mayor was re-elected and now they say some bike lane are ''satured'' like their is too many bikes!!! people are now investing in bikes instead of cars and that happened in 5 years of course Montréal is one of the safest cities in North America
Agree, agree, agree! So many people act like it's unpatriotic to criticize America. I love my place of birth enough to want to see her grow into something better, because where we are isn't good enough.
Okay, this is a really good video, Justina! ❤ Obviously, I'm going to have different opinions on some of these things than you do, but overall I really really appreciate these wonderful insights about how individuals, communities, and governments can work together to promote health! Yes, it is political, and that's okay! Thank you for drawing attention to these things, and for being transparent about which things you are qualified to authoritatively on and which things you are less qualified to speak on (but still have a right to express your opinions about). I have multiple chronic illnesses, and there are so many financial, environmental, and social factors that contribute to my suffering and isolation. 😢 (One thing I'd love to see is clean air standards, specifically for indoors. Things like regular testing for mold, monitoring CO2 levels, mandating high quality HEPA air filtration in public places, and in some places ultraviolet disinfecting light.)
And the lovely thing is that we may have differing opinions on certain specifications here, but I truly believe that most people all want the same thing deep down. We just want to be able to live and enjoy our lives safely.
Your point on the community reminds me of a podcast I'd heard (I *think* it was an episode of No Stupid Questions with Dr Angela Duckworth) and the importance of all types of social connection: the best friend you can tell anything to, the friends you can hang out casually with - it's super important to have those "no real expectations" connections since those are also low stress, and community where you're just in the same place with other people feeling a sense of belonging with something bigger than yourself. It's impossible for one person to be all of those things to you, but a lot of people don't even have one solid friend. So we need multiple types of third spaces, not just a local church and library, which sometimes people seem to think that's "enough."
Your video was awesome, more and more people need to speak up and educate themselves on politics. Now more than ever people need to speak up: write your congressmen, go to civic meetings. We cannot be complacent. I agree with you on we need more accessibility to things. Luckily I live in Northeast Philadelphia and I can walk anywhere and we have a bus stop and train station nearby, but it is true, Bucks County is not walkable. Keep the videos coming. Loved it.
Yes!!! EVERY person deserves healthcare and the ability to obtain the necessary medications without having to choose between rent or medicine. These people also forget that there are neighborhoods without grocery stores. The only place they can get to is a convenience store.
Thank you for this video. First of all, I too, am a Temple University graduate (c/o 2004 - TU M*thu!), os you had me from there. But also, I second everything you said in this video. I've been digital nomading for almost 2 years now and so many countries have better public transportation and walkable cities, which also helps in 3rd spaces. You don't have to drive 20-30 minutes to meet at an expensive restaurant where, as you said, you're rushed in and out to make room for the next customer. I heard an article headline that, this is one of the reasons, so many Americans are becoming such homebodies. The whole "outside is expensive" is real. There aren't many public parks, libraries are underfunded, even many shopping malls have closed down, which, in addition to shopping, also used to be a gathering place for friends. Truly said that the "richest" country in the world can't do better by its citizens.
Thank you for making this video. I don't understand the logic of going to someone's RUclips channel/video and telling them what to say. To me, that's like me going to someone's house and telling them what they can and can't say. If I don't like it, I can just leave lol I completely agree with what you said about nuance. Unfortunately, I do think there are a lot of counterarguments to suggestions for improvement. For example, I heard a while ago that fast food isn't a problem because eating fresh (raw) veggies and fruit are a quick grab and go thing. I think more times than not, the point gets lost with counterarguments. Yes, there are always choices that people make. However, people are not encouraged, incentivized, or directed towards making a healthier choice most of the time. People are not as self-motivated and self-motivated as we would like to believe. The reality is if we make the healthy choice easier and the unhealthy choice harder, people will more likely do the healthy thing because it's easier.
I appreciate the counterarguments too! I truly believe if both "sides" could actually work together, we'd see that we have a lot to learn AND a lot more in common than we think :)
Well done. I appreciate that you are using your platform in this way. I personally think that healthcare could and should be the #1 issue uniting all of us voters; the current system does not serve any of us. But healthcare as an issue barely registered during the election, and instead we've been fed stupid issues that divide us.
I agree with time. That’s why the misinformation is popular, you don’t have to do anything that takes more time (exercise and healthy food), and can avoid things, which can take less time. I’m fortunate that my western city has sidewalks and bike paths. But I live in a university city, Tempe, Arizona, and my local government is different from the norm. Although, Phoenix is making some progress with light rail.
You touched on it, but an (over)simplified barrier to good health maintenance is TIME. Getting healthy (for MOST people) is not especially difficult... it's just exceedingly time-consuming. Life gets in the way: after the responsibilities of family, work, school, chores, and so on, many folks just don't have the time - let alone the energy - to dedicate to proper nutrition and a fitness program. Soooooo much easier and faster - and probably cheaper! - to order a pizza than it is to season and roast up some chicken and vegetables... which also requires a trip to the store if not already in the home. It takes TIME to exercise, to shop for and prepare healthy meals, and to do the proper research on what you're putting in your body and what you need to put your body through. There are other factors, but people latch on to fad diets and specious get-fit-quick exercise programs, zany health claims ("seed oils bad", etc), and so on because folks just don't have - or don't take - the time to do their own research... it's so much faster and more convenient to take their info from their favorite celebrities and influencers. Speaking from experience, when time is no longer a limiting factor, getting one's health in order becomes so much more accessible. I firmly believe it's people's inability OR unwillingness to take/make the time that inhibits their ability to positively impact their health. Some people truly can't - they're burning the candle at both ends, life has just overburdened them with other priorities, etc. But it can't be ignored that laziness and avoidance of stress/discomfort isn't in play for some - I was guilty of that myself! Exercise is hard, clean eating isn't particularly fun (at the start, anyway). And ironically enough, it takes even more TIME to see and feel the benefits of all that time invested - weeks/months of dedication. People want immediate results... but it's a marathon, not a sprint. TIME IS THE FIRE IN WHICH WE BURN. Also: "28% - that's way less than half. That's like... a quarter." - Temple University, everyone! :P
I feel like I have to quit my job to really focus on my health and it frustrates me so much because, well, I need money to live so I have to work. I tell people about this conundrum and they look at me like I have 10 heads. Health truly is not a priority, we can't afford it 😢
This is an area in which I have interest & expertise, & I agree with 92% of what you have to say. The zoning laws in the US, the unbridled greed of the universities, & the lobbies are things you barely touched on, but you have nailed the general issue & they are definitely a problem. Healthcare in the US is less of a capitalism problem & more of a cronyism issue. For example, you & I & most doctors are all small businesses, the backbone of commerce here (capitalism in the personal sense). Insurance companies, giant healthcare conglomerates, & congresspersons engage in something less resembling capitalism & more resembling back room deals, which is a risk of every corrupted economic system. It’s complicated & covers decades of increasing corruption, but the history of how we got here today is very much government + corporations scratching each other’s backs. I don’t know if the USA could ever manage true universal healthcare OR a true competitive market at this point because the webs of special interest are so strong & it’s awful, it’s absolutely terrible.
Yes, to the library being a third space, but my library also has really restricted hours. The only day of the week that I could go chill after work is Tuesdays, and I work an 8-5. And yes, as others have said, everything is political, even the library, as it's publicly funded.
5:42 Justina, if my heart rate gets up during strength training, does that also count toward weekly cardio? Or honestly should my heart rate not be getting up that much during strength, should I slow down? Thanks!!!
@@JustinaErcole Why do they say you don't want your heartrate up during lifting? Greg Doucette said Then it's just cardio with weights. I don't understand why that's bad for building muscle?
You don't have public health experience. Well, neither does RFK Jr and he's planning to implement this stupid shit!!! GREAT video!!! You know more and understand more than RFK Jr!
I was biking across my county in Michigan and found myself in an area that had only one main road which was a dirt highway with 50mph speed limit, 2 lanes, no sidewalks, and barely any shoulder. People didn’t slow down for me. I had to call my husband to come pick me up because I was afraid I was going to get hit.
Zoning laws would make a huge impact, you can get around a Japanese city so much easier than you can an American one on foot, but it wouldn't even be legal to build hardly of the stuff you can do in Japan here in the US. Kinda crazy that in the land of the free we aren't allowed to build how we want
Yes, yes, yes🤩🤩🤩!!! Can you please go and work for MAHA please? I love, love, love this video! I feel like a lot of us think this way, but how do we go around making it happen? Thank you J! I fully enjoyed this video🤗.
I know we don’t agree on politics, but I love your content and enjoyed hearing your perspective on this. The MAHA movement drives me insane. I’m a nurse and the low quality health in our country is not due to seed oils and food dyes, but no one who is sold on MAHA will hear any of it. I’ve come to the conclusion that a lot of people are very privileged in their thinking on health and it’s hard for them to see outside their own situations.
Lisa, I really respect you for taking the time to watch and share your views. I truly think that even though we (and many people I know) disagree on politics, we have a lot more in common than the media and honestly our government officials let on. At the end of the day, we all just want to be happy and healthy.
Commenting for the algorithm but need to wait a bit to watch. I am still reeling from the election results and staying away (for the time being) from content discussing anything to do with this upcoming administration. I have a feeling I will find myself in agreement with your positions here when I do watch.
Love your channel and so love this message and your delivery of it!! RFK is a huge mistake IMO, beginning with the fact that he is in mo way shape or form a medical clinician, epidemiologist, nor any kind of educated and experienced public health official. In addition to traditional k-12, college and advanced degree institutions, the populace needs common sense education re health that is readily accessible. I can talk until I’m blue in the face about healthifying one’s eating habits, strength training, screening for diabetes, etc etc and I get crickets. They don’t know, they don’t care, there is a pill for cholesterol, blood pressure, and weight loss, etc so self-responsibility goes out the window in lieu of that pill, let alone taking a walk or lifting a dumbell!! 🤦🏻♀️Rant over!! I hope your video goes viral!! 🩷
Love this topic and your take on it! Are you able to share the original source for the 7-8k step recommendation? I wanted to share it with someone, but was having a hard time finding it on my own.
Common sense! RFK and the associated slogan are just politics. RFK is supremely unqualified to handle any of it. Politics and health are so intertwined that any major changes will take a lifetime to enact. We the consumers have the most power through our pocketbooks.
Justina you hit the nail on the head!! Im super passionate about building community spaces (my husband calls me a serial extrovert 😂) and one of the biggest ways i do that is thru volunteering at my library and book clubs. The underfunding of libraries is so real and im very privileged to even have the time to volunteer and engage in these clubs while working a full time job. Something else always has to be sacrificed, however, to maintain this in our current society (I work a 9-5). I agree we are so focusing on the wrong things. Stop making tiktoks yelling at people in supermarkets for buying cheetos and start holding lobbyists and corporations responsible for their greed that makes a healthy life unrealistic for a vast majority of our people!!! We are always going after the wrong people. We need community and compassion. ❤
Sorry, the USA doesn't often have pavements????? That blows my mind. I'm from an Asian city and the only places that don't have pavements are..... the boondocks. I didn't even know people built roads without pavements except for highways.
See, your remarks are too common sense!! It's not as sexy and simple as, seed oils and red dye number 40 are the source of all your problems!!! Also, try my product instead, it's only three easy payments of something-something ninety nine!!! Totally agree with all the points you made, especially Universal Healthcare and reforming our infrastructure and food subsidies to promote healthier living (other countries have managed this, it's possible!! Although probably easier in urban areas vs. rural.) I would really like to see lobbying reform -- it shouldn't be the case that the most powerful and monied interests get the influence and the rest of us get ignored. Our government should hear and consider all of us, not just corporate interests!!! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this! Hopefully it breaks through to some people that the MAHA movement!! Then again, I just saw my Yoga studio advertise a new parasite cleanse and I despaired a bit. The woo is too pervasive!!
Feed kids in schools healthy meals. Have a community garden/outdoor classroom at schools. Sin tax on foods with too much sugar or salt. Make cities more walkable and bikable. Allow the keeping of chickens and vegetable gardens in front or back yards. Offer subsidized cooking and nutrition classes. Build neighborhood and community centers so people have access to third spaces. Regulate apps that have been shown to have severe adverse effects on people. Create a well-funded universal health care.

a walkable city is essential, parks (safe parks) and recreations, bikes lane, share bike program, public transport ..... people need to let go of their car and if they do without going to the gym they can easily loose 5 to 15 pounds. it's crazy how just walking from point A to B can make a difference in general health.
I love my place of birth enough to want to see her grow into something better, because where we are isn't good enough.
if we love something, we SHOULD be critical of it. i don't really understand the mentality of blindly following laws or politicians.
@JustinaErcole Absolutely!
Another reason I ❤ you! Yes more people need to be talking about this.
So we need multiple types of third spaces, not just a local church and library, which sometimes people seem to think that's "enough."
ooh i'll have to take a listen - thank you for the recommendation!
Spot on Justina! Bravo!! 🙌🏻
Loved it.
Thank you for watching and GO BIRDS!!
Yes!!!
EVERY person deserves healthcare and the ability to obtain the necessary medications without having to choose between rent or medicine.
These people also forget that there are neighborhoods without grocery stores. The only place they can get to is a convenience store.
Agreed. Unfortunately many people don't.
OMG Justina, thank you for sharing your story! I totally relate with you, I grew up extremely catholic (I am from Guatemala) and I'm also type A...
Thank you for speaking up Justina!❤
Thank you for making this video.
I don't understand the logic of going to someone's RUclips channel/video and telling them what to say. To me, that's like me going to someone's house and telling them what they can and can't say. If I don't like it, I can just leave lol
I completely agree with what you said about nuance.
"Making lobbying illegal would solve a lot of our issues" 😅 can i get this tattooed on my forehead
It seriously would fix SO MUCH!
Agree with everything you said. Great video.
100% Mike, you hit the nail on the head. Also I have a theater degree lol math isn’t my strong suit 😂
The hamster comment as I’m watching this on my treadmill 😂 I feel called out
I feel like I have to quit my job to really focus on my health and it frustrates me so much because, well, I need money to live so I have to work. I tell people about this conundrum and they look at me like I have 10 heads. Health truly is not a priority, we can't afford it 😢
Time is absolutely a huge factor in health!
I agree with you. I'm Canadian and still you have many points relivant to us as well.
Thank you for chiming in! I’m not even close to being an expert in a lot of this so it’s helpful to read a bit more from you :)
@@JustinaErcole We all need to join our expertise together to fight this absolutely baffling system so I love that we’re in this together!

I love your politics and everything about this video😊
I couldn't love this video more!
PREACH!!!! Thank you Justina!
Yes, to the library being a third space, but my library also has really restricted hours. The only day of the week that I could go chill after work is Tuesdays, and I work an 8-5. And yes, as others have said, everything is political, even the library, as it's publicly funded.
and even in nyc, that public funding has gone down SO MUCH! it's really sad to see :(
i love you justina, i wish this is what we could do
5:42 Justina, if my heart rate gets up during strength training, does that also count toward weekly cardio? Or honestly should my heart rate not be getting up that much during strength, should I slow down? Thanks!!!
Yes BUT if your entire strength workout is in that zone the entire time, you need more rest :)
@@JustinaErcole Why do they say you don't want your heartrate up during lifting? Greg Doucette said Then it's just cardio with weights. I don't understand why that's bad for building muscle?
100% agree with everything you say here!
100% Justina!
Love this! Better pay for the working man. More education. Better neighborhoods. All would benefit health. Nailed it.
But the people at the top would “suffer”, so I honestly don’t see any of this happening :(
I am the hamster on my bike watching this to get some movement in over lunch! Great video
I’m a hamster on a treadmill getting my zone 2 work in right now lol
Zoning laws would make a huge impact, you can get around a Japanese city so much easier than you can an American one on foot, but it wouldn't even be legal to build hardly of the stuff you can do in Japan here in the US. Kinda crazy that in the land of the free we aren't allowed to build how we want
Great breakdown of everything.
Thank you!
100% on the lobbying issue
I would like this video 10x if I could. ✊
Great video, I enjoyed it.
Very thoughtful video!
Yes, yes, yes🤩🤩🤩!!! Can you please go and work for MAHA please? I love, love, love this video! I feel like a lot of us think this way, but how do we go around making it happen? Thank you J! I fully enjoyed this video🤗.
i'm not qualified AT ALL to work in public health lol, but i appreciate it :)
At the end of the day, we all just want to be happy and healthy.
the new queen of maha!!! 👌
Omg 😂😂😂😂
Thank you!
Love this topic and your take on it! Are you able to share the original source for the 7-8k step recommendation? I wanted to share it with someone, but was having a hard time finding it on my own.
here's the meta analysis summary!

Common sense! RFK and the associated slogan are just politics. RFK is supremely unqualified to handle any of it. Politics and health are so intertwined that any major changes will take a lifetime to enact. We the consumers have the most power through our pocketbooks.
Great video Justina
100% AGREE 👏🏼👏🏼
Yessssss! Agree with all of this!
Cheers to all of this (and most especially "worm child") 👏
Not me watching this video on my hamster wheel walking pad 😂 we gotta do what we gotta do ✌️
I am also on a hamster wheel walking pad at the moment 😂
Sorry, the USA doesn't often have pavements????? That blows my mind. I'm from an Asian city and the only places that don't have pavements are..... the boondocks. I didn't even know people built roads without pavements except for highways.
Many suburbs don't have them unfortunately.
@@JustinaErcole 😯😯😯 that's so surprising! I would have thought it would be a given since suburbs are a place for families.
Great video!
I live in Orange County an hour south of Los Angeles. Where I live, you are screwed if you don't have a car.
Thank goodness for the NHS. If only people didn’t abuse it😔
Did rhe pronouncing MAHA "Mawhaw" maje anyone else think of the old Amanda Show skit?? No, just me??
hahahahahahaha stop i'm crying - my delco accent came out strong here lol
🎉So well said!🎉
I loved the whole video
Thank you!
Never mind, saw you mentioned almost all of these and a few more besides. This is really great, glad you are responding to the MAHA movement.
