HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 13 авг 2024
- The video explain 14 common noises made by ferrets, along with an explanation of why and when they might occur.
Sure, there are likely to be different names people use for each sound, and some ferrets might make each in a slightly different way. We're all different after all! But this vid will give a good overview as to the range of emotions and audible expressions by your little fuzzbutt!

my ferret once did the terror scream and it was horrifying to hear. The only other time I had heard a Ferret do this was with another baby I had who suffered from seizures for a while before she passed away. I immediately ran to check on him and he had just bumped a stool knocking an empty amazon box down on top of him and trapping him underneath it, he was completely fine. gave me a serious scare hearing that noise again though.
Gosh yeah it's so frightening to hear. Glad he was OK 👍
My deaf girl is a drama queen and does the terror scream for EVERYTHING
Mines doing that now idk what to do
@@brittanygidney8921 my female ferret is always very nervous and her reactions are too emotional, so when she bites me (and it’s VERY hard) she starts this screech while hanging on my hand with her teeth clenched. This always freaks me out
I miss my ferret. Thank you for sharing. My ferret did the happy laugh allot and I never knew what it meant so knowing it was an expression of glee or happiness makes me happy.
You are welcome!
Well.... Just FYI; it's currently ferret season 😉
You missed a BIG one! The "hiccup"! As best I can tell from the six ferrets I've owned over fifteen years, there is a distinct "hiccup" sound they use to say "Hey! I want something".
😀 that's a good one. I didn't include sneezing either, 🤧 ferrets sneezes are insane, so violent!
@@kingsdownferrets8485 I just got my first ferret and this is the first time I have ever interacted with them at all and the hiccups really had me worried for a solid day because I thought he was sick until I realized what he was doing.
they get the hiccups pretty often actually 💀 but many of these sounds my ferret have never done she’s only hiccuped, whined, dooked, sneezed and farts, i forgot one so i’m gonna edit and add this and grunting while pooping
@@kingsdownferrets8485Our little one is a quiet sneezer but has this obnoxious habit of always sticking her head into your shirt so she can sneeze directly down your neck.
My spayed Marshall girl would make the mothering call to her toy mice when they were squeaked! She was always very delicate with in how she stashed them away in her sleeping spots.
How sweet! Our sleeping spots are stacked with toys and socks etc. Some are not so delicate!
I have no idea why I've been feeling like watching ferret content lately, but here I am. Look at these living noodles.
Welcome 🙏 we've got lots of fun and facts. Check out our other vids! 🙂
That's so cute! 😄 (and love the "living noodle") ha!
In the first week of having my ferret I experienced the terror screech. We were trying to take the cage out to be cleaned with a hose. We had left the two of them alone in the bathroom thinking they really couldn’t get to anything. Doughnut had gotten herself stuck in pipes. It was basically strangling her. I felt so bad. The screech was faint at this point. Luckily, she survived and is still doing fine to this day.
How awful. I had a hob that was crawling in the dishwasher as I was putting stuff in, and he got stuck/wedged in the wires and screeched. Then let out a huge stink bomb 💣 🤢
“Seemingly quite stimulated by his bad behavior.”
Ferrets in a nutshell. 🤣🤣
My girl has just begun sleep talking, and it's the cutest thing ever.
Thank you for making such a comprehensive video about ferret noises, helps be gauge the situation when my girls says something I'm not familiar with.
Happy to help!
The terror screech. I woke up to that one night going off constantly for a minute. I launched out of bed, got a flashlight and looked around until I found the source: One of my new girls had bumped into my boy in the dark and absolutely freaked out. What was funny was my boy had done nothing to her and was standing there turning his head from side to side in pure disgust at the display, like he was saying "Oh please, pull yourself to together. I didn't hurt you and I don't want to".
Her sister too was standing off to one side staring blankly clearly woken up herself wondering what the fuss was all about. The amusing thing was SHE was the one that would attack my boy, not her sis.
Crikey, that would be horrible sound to wake up to and panic!
I had a Jill that would absolutely torment the sweetest hob I've ever MET, not just owned. She would chew on him and tackle him relentlessly and he would mostly just take it...BUT, eventually he would get fed up and scruff her and IMMEDIATELY she would give the terror squeal. I would run over, separate them and scold my poor hob because I didn't realize what was going on. Eventually after one incident I grew suspicious and pretended to walk away, then snuck back to spy on them and saw her TORMENTING the poor boy right after lol. Some girls just know how to manipulate guys.
@@fshn4x4 Kinda what happened to my boy and the two sisters. The albino kept attacking him, mostly ambushing him when he was found sleeping until he decided to attack on sight (This was the guy who was welcoming them with open arms the minute they arrived and was friends with everyone he met). The screaming girl eventually gave in and he stopped harassing her asap, but the albino sister refused. He'd see her, march up and stare her down on his tip toes and she'd stare at him right back up at him until they'd both find a separate smell on the ground to check out and then wander off mutually deescalating. Neither conceded and they eventually learned to act as if the other never existed.
@@fshn4x4 some ferrets just like being bullies sometimes! I've got those who are always more of a pain during new introductions 🙄
I’m glad I’ve only heard the happy sounds from my ferrets so far 🙂
I don’t think I’ve ever heard the terror squeal from any of my ferrets. Hopefully I never do.
Mine flipped onto its back and yelled really loud because it wanted to scare my dad
@@sammy2693 That’s a seizure.
Another ferret noise: Snoring! One of our ferrets was snoring so loudly when sleeping next to my girlfriend in our bed (I was on a business trip) that she thought a stranger broke into our house! 😅
Once scared my little deaf ferret Mouse, by walking up behind her and she did the terror scream, almost had to change my pants after. Once she realized it was me she calmed down.
Yes, I have heard it too that way on a nervous ferret
Luckily I never experienced the "Terror scream" with any of my ferrets, though one or two times, our boys fought really hard and had to be separated under a stream of running water to let go of the other. We just adopted a group of 2, and one outsider and we where training them to get along, under the guidance of the ferret-shelter we adopted them from. I had ferrets for 9 years at that point but never had to go through a new-pairing like this. It was pretty bad the first few weeks. Our boy Balin who also was the aggressor most of the time liked to scream like a diva, even when our boy Gandalf didn't actually do anything to him. But if he kept pestering Gandalf, Balin of course got his butt kicked. Sometimes I woke up at 4 am to screaming and hissing. But they eventually got along fine and started cuddling up to each other.
I´d like to add a noise though... on veeeery rare occasions you might even get a little snore from under a cubboard if your ferrets are sleeping :)
Introductions can be so stressful 😫 but so worth the effort 👌.
@@kingsdownferrets8485 OH yeah they are 😖. The boys needed almost a year to get along. Sadly half a year later Balin died of his insulinoma 💔. They had just started to get along. But Gandalf and Balins Sister Sansa get along well, so they are not alone
😴🦡😌
Yesss, the little higher pitched but short breath that makes a hmmm sound-very faint but so cute as they exhale!
I am a novice ferret owner and because of you, I am learning so much. Thank you very much for making these videos for people like me who know absolutely nothing about ferrets. And my baby is living a good life because of it.❤
You are so welcome!
😂mom was like get me outta here these honks are driving me crazy!
1:08 “Even just his presence irks her”
Me: girl, I feel the same with some coworkers!😂
I know they can be vicious if provoked, but it's hard to take a warning seriously when it sounds like a squeak toy.
I miss my sweet boy, I remember he would do the “happy pant” and tail wiggle. I was worried he was out of breath; it comforts me to know he was happily playing🥹 Duke in peace my sweet Clyde💜
I found out my ferret died when I woke up today
Ty for posting this I really needed it
omg that's so sad, so sorry to hear your news. They always depart us too soon 😢
The first time you hear them hiss, it's so weird if you're used to other animals hissing...it sounds so quiet and harmless.
Lol- gaggle 'o ferrets at 0:30 ☺
Ferrets are literally perfect I love them so much
You have such a vast knowledge. We have experienced these with ours. Our choco screamed when any water touched him.We adopted him from the RSPCA. We only tried to bath him once and he screamed so loud, we never ever tried again as it was so distressing for him most of all, but us too.We loved him for many years and him us too. Finding out their likes and dislikes is so important. ❤❤❤
I've had my ferret for almost 3 years and i always hear him do the happy dook
Its so cute
I only heard him do a painful sound once bc i accidentally stepped on his leg :(
Thank you so much! I'm a new ferret mommy and it is good to know all the sounds. Luckily I have only hear the good/happy sounds from my Anja.
3:46 OOOOOHHHHHHHHH. thank goodness XD for weeks i thought that "happy pant" noise was my 2 ferrets being dehyrated or coughing so thank goodness i know what it is now
Glad to help! I find it an adorable little sound :)
Oof hearing that terror squeal breaks my heart. My ferret Bandit made it once briefly when his tail got pinch by a rolling chair. You can hear the pain 😢
I hope that one ferret is okay I started to cry my eyes out hearing it 😢
I love how a ferret's hiss is not the standard "ssshhhhh" like other animals, but is a "sssshhhh-up".
Excellent info! I did not know there were multiple types of dooks. It is also nice to know when they are making noises while sleeping, they are not having stomach or any other discomfort. Thank you!
I will be referencing this one a few times.
Glad it was helpful!
I had 3 ferrets growing up. Brings back fond memories of waking up Smokey from his hidden torpor by playing the harmonica to come attack our feet. Good times. Also seemed to have an affinity for rubber. Wasn’t a big deal unless he attacked my dad’s foot. One was a fake leg with a rubber foot- the other wasn’t. 50/50 chance…
haha yes mine have a thing for rubber too!
Mine used to attack my dad's foot. My dad would respond with "f6#^ck$%g weasels!"
I love the expression " had a whale of a time" so good
😁 I've no idea where that comes from! Will have to look it up now 😄
@kingsdownferrets8485 I thought you said it in the video so that's why I said it 😅
@@broken_queer_but_fighting8589 oh yes, I definitely said it, I just don't know where the expression came from 😄 it sounds strange when you just look at the words!
Maybe whales are well known for having fun! 😄
@@kingsdownferrets8485 maybe
My deaf ferret does the happy panting a lot when he plays, I always thought it was because he's deaf and don't "know" how to dook. But he also talks in his sleep and one made the terror screech when he tried to follow his sister in a tight spot and got stuck because he's much bigger (it was very easy to get him unstuck and he was fine and playing again immediately). So he's definitely not mute!
I had one more noise I didn't know a ferret could make. It was from a male, and I had placed him in the bathtub to contain him momentarily, and he DID NOT WANT. (There was no water.) He let out a long low souful moan that sounded like ooooooooooo. It was not a happy noise, and I picked up and cuddled. He was fine, he just never liked slick floors or surfaces.
That's an interesting one
Thanks for this! I plan on getting two Ferrets this week! looking forward to hearing them dook and "laugh" - hopefully I never hear any of the bad noises but I'm glad I now know what to look out for if I do
Good luck!
;__; 3:20 brought back the last painful memories of my albino Boo. He was the Biggums. Poor beefcake spent 4 hours making that noise while having seizures until he gave me a sharp bite and whimper then slowly passed away in my arms. A friend of mine also had a similar experience not too long ago. I honestly hope nobody has to experience it.
I had to laugh at the 2nd noise where the mother ferret was just done and bailed on her kits with all their honks. I did have ferrets FIGHT a few times, but eventually they got along great. Thanks for this informative video.
Glad it was of interest!
My 3 month old girl makes the mothering call to me whenever I’m near her cage❤
Amazing video. Thank you.
I do not have a ferret. I have never owned a ferret; but it could not resist hearing their little sounds
My ferret seems to really like hissing when we play tug of war. she absolutely loves to pounce on several objects like an empty harness, and when she does, she lets out that annoyed hiss. I can't tell if she's happily play hissing, or actually annoyed....
Gladly I’ve only herd the happy noises, although my dad told me that one time one of my ferrets was chasing one of my dogs around the house, but not in a playful mood.
this sounds like my baby she terrorizes my 40 pound mean old cat the cat has hurt me but my little ferret loves to mess with her
I read a paper about laughter in animals, and I feel pretty confident that the "happy pant" does scientifically count as "ferret laughing."
Yay! I think it makes sense!
I heard the terror scream once while playing with my girl Kodiak. I touched her back foot while playing tag and she panicked.
Great summary of them!
Glad you liked it
One thing to note that deaf ferrets can scream when otherwise a hearing ferret wouldn't. We think this is because being deaf, they can't hear how loud it is so go full scream.
Yes, you're right. Deaf ferrets often make unusual noises and unusual volumes. As you say it's partially because they can't judge volume, but also its partially due to not "learning" sound interactions during childhood like hearing-enabled ferrets do.
I did the happy pant back at my 3 ferrets and they all did the war dance and happy dooked all around me.
I’ve only heard the terror screech once when my ferret got hurt after she got stuck under a pan next to the fridge.
My jill hisses for attention and she dose mother call when happy and bouncing around shes been done
Thank you for this video! It is extremely informative and well put together. cheers! ^_^
Glad you enjoyed it!
My ferret has terror screeched twice in his 3 years so far, once just yelling in the cage at night because he was mad. And then another one time he got into my silverware drawer. He got a fork caught in between his toes and screamed
Ouch!! Yeah that'd do it!
Thank you for a very good video.
In nearly 10 years of ownership I have only ever heard one bark and it was only 1 time, glad I did, it's exceedingly rare.
So helpful now I understand why my ferret do a specific sound ! I bring home a new ferret they are fine but sometimes my ferret is annoying by her and make the number 4 sound😅
My boy Miles had the terror scream. Seizures. It's like a kid throwing their head back and screaming.
Very informative!
The sleep talking sounds so cute🥺🥺
Baby squeek souns like a bumch of balloons rubbing against each other
When my elderly ferret had her last seizure, she did the "terror screech" for more than an hour until her throat got destroyed. Had to put her down since the seizure wouldn't stop, and it was visibly draining her life.
It is a very horrifying sight and sound to witness. It's been about 20 years, and I'm still traumatised by it. Typing this comment, my eyes are getting watery.
Thank you for not showing the video.
For those who've never had their ferret do it, I really really hope you'll never have to hear/see it.
😥 seizures are horrific to see and hear 😢
Thank you for this! I need accurate descriptions of the noises because I'm playing Pathfinder with a ferret companion! (under Badger stats!)
We've only had 2 ferrets scream, one was in pain and had to be put down the other we don't know why as she's the most placid and loving of ours but I never want to hear it again, it really is heart breaking that they're obviously terrified
GREAT VIDEO! TY for making this i will 100% share!
I AM SO HAPPY RUclips RECOMMENDED ME THIS VIDEO AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Thank u so much i got a ferret Recently and he been making the happy dook and am happy that he is happy ❤
My ferret developed a mass on it’s tail and was later diagnosed with leukemia. She lasted a couple years after the fact but when the seizures came on it was horrifying to hear that terror shreak constantly, and to see their body contort every which way as their muscles spasm. I think about her all the time. Poor baby.
Poor girl 😥
I’m a new ferret parent. I’ve been doing a lot of research because I want my ferret to live its best life, and your video served an important role in it. My lil hob is a bit more on the quiet side (though that could be because I didn’t adopt another ferret, dunno if my place is ready for another). I’ve only heard him dook on several occasions but he does pant a lot! Every time I play with him he makes a happy pant and it makes me so happy that he’s having a great time!
Whilst there are lots of ferret sounds, each individual is different and may not make them in the same way. So some are indeed more quiet and don't dook much, but it doesn't mean they're not perfectly happy or excited.
than you shouldn’t have gotten a ferret that’s messed up don’t mess up a ferrets life just bc you want one and didn’t do the correct research on how to get one ur ferret is 100% depressed and it’s obvious just from reading this paragraph, it’s only content when you play bc now YOUR it’s ferret unless it has issues and HAS to be alone DO NOT get one unless you can get 2 that’s seriously sad that you’re that selfish that you have a ferret but don’t have an area for a second one when the most important things is companionship for them
you willingly got a ferret doing no research clearly i bet the place you got it from had it originally with another ferret than you took it away to be alone that’s seriously so messed up and sad, all bc you want a pet but won’t do what’s necessary to make sure it’s happy and has a quality life so you half ass it and bring it to a place where it has to be alone if you could only get one than you shoulda got one that has some issue where it HAS to be alone like i only have 1 ferret bc her brother died at the rescue i got her from and the people at the rescue tried to bond her to other ferrets and she viciously attacks any other ferrets so she has to be alone and she’s very happy, it’s super sad you’re that selfish i pray that you do what’s right and either give it to a better home or go get another one bc it only gets worse and you should never get 1 unless there’s a reason it has to be alone
My little girl Iko dooks a lot, and snores alot (the 14th one on the list) :) She has never hissed or squealed yet though (thank goodness)
my ferret does the mothering call when im playing with her stuffies..
Thank you it was very informative, it's hard to find information on ferrets
Our pleasure!
Wonderful video!
my ferret hissed and i thought it was a sneese! (he had just got home, and was being a cranky butt because he wanted to crawl under my son's easel and i wouldn't let him)
Ohhhh…that terror squeak! Only heard it once when my ferret was very young and I’d only had him a few days.
I dropped some medication on the floor, and I was afraid he would he would eat it - so I quickly dropped down to the floor in front of him to grab the pill.
Obviously caught him off guard and that sound made ME jump.
I felt so bad for having scared him.
Ow poor lad. Yeah kits are quite skittish and can react strongly to being caught off guard. But they get over it quickly 🙂

I’ve had ferrets for almost 8 months now, luckily only heard 12, 13 and 14! I wish to never hear the horrific one when the ferret is in pain.
It is honestly a sound of nightmares for me.... I don't wish anyone to go threw what I did.
LOOK AT THE CAT SNAKES YOU CAN'T DENY THAT THEY ARE CUTE
I always thought number 13 as a laugh too
I miss my 5 buddies
Thank you! This is very interesting
Glad you think so!
Ferret battle cry= Cute little squeaks
I have heard all these noises and am happy that I knew what they were and that you have confirmed them. .
Am I the only one who thinks the "annoyed hiss" sounds more like they're kissing their teeth XD
I recently got a younger ( spade) female and my male ferret who has been mostly solo hasn’t like taken to her yet … she dooks at him and he doesn’t make much noise he does kinda get bummy when she’s out though
I can’t tell if her dook is Agro or not
Her sounds are most likely inquisitive and intended to be friendly. That is, unless she is showing physical aggression. Integrations can take time especially with solo ferrets but it's worth the effort. Just make sure they have room to work it out.
@@kingsdownferrets8485 aghhhhh thank uuu, that honestly helps a ton
My ferret doesn't make any noises. My other one is quite talkative.i do get a pant I guess from both other than that only one makes all kinds of noises
This video helped me understand what noises are what so thanks
You're welcome, I'm glad it was useful
My ferret snores as well. :D
Watching this while my ferret is sleeping with me
I wonder if he perked up to see what the sounds were 😀
@@kingsdownferrets8485 nope she was sound asleep like usual
i heard 11 once when one ferret pinched his hand in a drawer
I stood up from my chair once and my ferret in the corner of my eye screamed at me, it was so loud it nipped my ears i felt so awful, i guess i got up too fast and it really scared her, was so sad :(
A sudden shock I guess. Can happen but I guess at least they quickly realised what was happening.
@@kingsdownferrets8485 They were just a baby, big and strong now, I was worried because everyone here was talking about how they have never heard it.
i live in the United States and have had many ferrets over the years....it would be very helpful if you could address health issues in ferrets- in the US there are many cancers that kill ferrets and very few ferrets, VERY few make it to their full life expectancy....what can be done to make ferrets healthier?? How can we avoid cancers in ferrets?? I know it starts with selective breeding...and the US gene pool is terrible...do you have any input??
Oh boy thats a big topic. I'm not really qualified to comment on the US market and the issues there tho
I remember about a week after i got my ferret, he was in a room walking around and my mom entered the room quickly and it spooked him ans he did a terror screech. It was so loud i heard it from upstairs
Sounds about right (no pun). When young and in new places, they're its relatively common to be spooked like that.
Thank you I am thinking about getting one .
Hope I never hear the terror scream. Would definitely not want my ferrets to be hurt.
Also what is it called when my female 2yo when she hears her mouse toy squeak she will do a low repetitive half doot an then go an hide it ? As like she's concerned for it
Ferrets do make the similar dooking sound for many reasons. Its thir go-to noise to make. I guess one that I didn't mention I'm the vid was just dooking for inquisitive reasons. Some people think that squeaky toys generates a mothering instinct in ferrets which would suggest that the dooking is sort of a mothering call. But I don't think that is fully true, not least because i have males who do the same. Its probably a dook to reflect a mix of just general excitement/inquisitive/mothering emotions.
@@kingsdownferrets8485 i was thinking its more so a sound that intrigues them an also excites them but also ive noticed she kinda goes into not panic mode but like on the look out for things while she holding the mouse toy ...she doesnt do this with any of her other toes but its just honestly the cutest sound ill have to post a video i have of her doing the sound onto here when i get a chance to upload it on computer
do i split my ferrets up when one makes the pain squeal ? I’ve seen videos of people advising to let them fight into it but I can’t watch when one lets out the pain squeal
It depends on a few factors. Are they new together? Is it just occasionally or nonstop anytime when they are put together? How much space do they have? Like many animals, often ferrets take time to become friends, or just tolerant of each other. During this time fights can break out. We often take the approach of letting them get on with it. Supervised, incase it gets out of hand. The key to that is of course that they have plenty of space, so that they can keep apart when they want to rather than constantly being on top of each other. Also key is to have safe spaces, like little cardboard boxes with a single small entry hole. The ferret who is being attacked or chased will run into this boxes and turn around to defend it. This keeps them safe and usually gives them a break from the aggression. Knowing they have these safe rooms to bolt to helps with the introductions. If aggression becomes prolonged you can try other techniques such as the time-out box. Put the aggressive one in an empty pet carrier for 5mins when too aggressive and hopefully over time they learn that aggression is bad.
/ month ago I got 2 new ferrets and one of my other 2 girls (2 years old at that time) is normally super sweet but acts like a psychopath when seeing them Her usual dooking changed to the mothering call (never had babies) and as soon as she sees one of them she latches onto their neck and shakes them around while constantly making this sound. In the beginning there was barely no way to make her let go - which is now easier since they "fight" back (mostly running away) and their introduction attempts never lasted more than a minute. It´s been 7 month now and no improvement. My two older ones free roam and whenever the new ones are in their cage ,she climbs it up and down and bites/scratches the cage bars to get to them. The weird thing is - she really often waggs her tail - which is only ever a happy sign - when doing the cage rampage. I don´t know what to make of her behaviour - any tips?
Unfortunately introductions is a difficult area. It is simply down to the character of the individual. Some are easy going, some will be incredibly aggressive long term, and some are anywhere inbetween. We've conducted numerous introductions over the years, and rarely have a complete failure. The only thing that really helps is time. Over time they will fight less and become more accepting of each other. But they need to be together to have their battles. This is obviously very difficult when you don't have open space for them, as the defending ferret needs places to escape, hide and defend. They also need a large enough area so that they aren't constantly meeting each other. I was going to do a video on Introductions. Maybe I will later this spring.
For some reason my ferret only makes one noise which is the happy pant, I’m pretty sure that’s good but he’s not a very talkative ferret. Is there anything wrong with him or is he just more silent than other ferrets? (I adopted him from a shelter where someone gave him up so would that have to do with anything?)
He's absolutely perfect! Ferrets all have their own characters and some just don't talk. 🙂
So so so sweet
At first my ferret made the happy pants and ever since the cat started kinda playing with the ferrets more like chasing them and watching them
The cat kinda likes to go after their tales and I noticed the panting was different but I didn’t know the difference now I understand my ferret has been annoyed by the cat and he been hissing the cat usually backs off but is a persistent little poke the bear type dick
Thanks for video huge help anyway
How can they be so quiet yet make such a variety of noise??? 0.o
