Something that I really love about this movie is how throughout it, we see that Cloud's arm, heavily ridden with geostigma, is sensitive and often gets in the way. But in these scenes of Aerith's soul talking to him, she touches his arm and he never flinches, showing that prior to the end of this movie, which I consider to be Cloud's full mental heal, she is pretty much the only person that he feels fully comfortable around, and the only one he can open up to

The original Japanese line was "Zuru zuru zuru zuru" which is a Japanese expression mimicking a dragging sound (The drag implying Cloud's guilt & depression) These types of lines don't translate well into English
Spiralweb not only that but although he has wanted to be with tifa since he was a kid, he can't because he feels it would betray aerith. But tifa Marlene and Denzel are so great together if you read their story in on the way to a smile
It's not necessarily losing the woman he loved. In Japanese culture if you do something that's "unforgiveable," it's akin to the concept that "you don't deserve to live." I heard it watching anime, but only now, I understand what it means. I'll preface this by saying I do believe that Cloud does have romantic feelings for both Tifa and Aerith. However, I also believe his feelings run deeper for Tifa because of all the history they've had together. He knew Aerith a month and a half before she died, and it was complicated because he was ZackCloud... Even Aerith pointed out in the Gold Saucer date that she wants to meet the real Cloud. Maybe it could have grown into something more if she'd lived, but that was not meant to be. Aerith saying, "Isn't it time you did the forgiving?" means that Cloud was the one who couldn't forgive himself. In essence, Cloud himself felt like he didn't deserved to live after he couldn't save and protect his best friend Zack, and Aerith, a woman who he felt strong romantic feelings for (even though it was spurred on by the Jenova induced essence of Zack inside him and his identity crisis). Because he didn't forgive himself, and felt he didn't deserve to live, it also meant that he felt he didn't deserve to have a beautiful life with Tifa, the girl he's loved since he was 8 years old, who helped repair his broken heart and mind, living together and raising their adoptive children, Denzel and Marlene. At the end, Aerith and Zack tell him that neither of them blamed him for their deaths, and that they couldn't forgive him because he needed to forgive himself. In this context, they were telling him that he himself needed to find the fortitude to be deserving of the life and the love he had. And when he saw Aerith's and Zack's ghosts leave the church to return to the Lifestream together, that's when Cloud smiled, because he finally forgave himself, and the later official stories showed Cloud and Tifa as a couple, showing that he learned to accept the life and love that was always there.

Cloud is a great character to see how mental illness makes you suffer. despite attaining the powers of a "Soldier" he always wanted, he lost his best friend, then failed to save another friend. to top it off he has to deal with the ptsd from old wounds of losing his mother, and not being a true soldier. that's why cloud will always be the most realistic character study into a protag with mental illness.
It's so sad that he still carries the guilt of not being able to save Aerith. To the point that some may argue he is having these hallucinations. But even so Aerith wants him to forgive himself and move on.

A lot of people forget that when Cloud was being manipulated by Sephiroth, Cloud actually attacked her twice: At the end of the temple quest, and that brief moment before Sephiroth killed her. When those moments come to mind, it makes a lot more sense why Cloud seeks forgiveness.
I don’t think those are hallucinations. I think Cloud has a super close connection to the lifestream due to what happened in Crisis Core. Many FFVII characters have that kind of connection, especially those who knew Aerith.

Well, until the next part is out, all we can do is speculate. I'm in the camp that thinks Sephiroth knows killing Aerith was his undoing. Trying to refrain from killing her would just cause the Arbiters to attempt a massive course correction, so he tricks the party into destroying them. My opinion? I think Tifa could be in trouble. Not only that, but Tifa dying could have major consequences later on for Cloud. I won't mention why in the off chance someone reading this never played the original, but you guys know the scene I'm talking about. Granted, in such a scenario, Aerith could potentially stand in for Tifa, but she lacks the childhood connection with Cloud. People are mad Aerith might survive, but if they stop and think about it, that one change could dramatically alter the entire course of the game.
Basement Troll Productions FFVII wouldn’t be as memorable if Tifa was substituted for Aerith. I got this feeling they want all the characters to survive. Biggs and Wedge survived Sector 7 plate collapse, Jessie is still MIA. But letting them all live really kills the story

Take it for what it is. Is it his fault? No. But he was right there in both instances. Kinda hard to make a real life comparison, since we don’t really have mako poisioning or manipulation. But If you were somehow rendered unable to move, due to some sickness, and In both of those cases your friends got killed before your very eyes (one even a possible love interest), i’m sure you would feel guilty. Not because you killed them directly, but because you could not save them. And ontop of that, there’s actually a very real thing called survivors guilt. Cloud feels guilty because he wasn’t at the time strong enough to save his friends, and possibly feel abit guilty for surviving. Keep in mind, Zack died fighting protecting Cloud. And Aerith simply got dragged into all this by accident. She had no ties with AVALANCHE. We know that she’s an ancient, and would probably somehow enter the Conflict somehow eventually anyway. But from Clouds perspective Aerith died because he happened to stumble upon her while falling through the roof, which due to all the circumstances brought her into the Conflict, and in the end indirectly got her killed. So one guy dies fighting to protect you, and the other eventually dies because she was in the wrong place at the wrong time (from a story perspective she was at the right place though). I’d as that is as good enough reason as any to feel guilty. Is it right though? No, not really. But the movie is about Cloud forgiving himself, since it wasen’t his fault.
Calling it now, Holy won't activate as long as its user is alive. Cloud will save Aerith from Sephiroth at the end of the next part of Remake but in doing so will doom the world. Unless he kills Aerith himself, which Aerith asks him to do.. cut to credits.
Don't you understand that the OG FF7 is the bad ending? It's been confirmed by Square Enix that 500 years after the events of FF7 the entire human race has gone extinct. Human race was doomed because of her death.
Word of advice for anyone who hasn't done so: watch this in Japanese with subs (or without them if you speak Japanese obviously). The English voice acting ruined a lot of the emotion that should've been there.
At this point, nobody knows for sure if Advent Children event will ever happen in the remake timeline after Sephiroth messed up with it at the end of Part 1

Not because you killed them directly, but because you could not save them.
And ontop of that, there’s actually a very real thing called survivors guilt.
Cloud feels guilty because he wasn’t at the time strong enough to save his friends, and possibly feel abit guilty for surviving.
Keep in mind, Zack died fighting protecting Cloud.
And Aerith simply got dragged into all this by accident.
She had no ties with AVALANCHE.
We know that she’s an ancient, and would probably somehow enter the Conflict somehow eventually anyway.
But from Clouds perspective Aerith died because he happened to stumble upon her while falling through the roof, which due to all the circumstances brought her into the Conflict, and in the end indirectly got her killed.
So one guy dies fighting to protect you, and the other eventually dies because she was in the wrong place at the wrong time (from a story perspective she was at the right place though).
I’d as that is as good enough reason as any to feel guilty.
