In the first episode of Irwin Allen's the time tunnel John Winston was one of the crew on the Titanic. The biggest mistake in star trek 2 the wrath of Khan is Khan recognized Mr.Checkov, who not only was not in season 1 but didn't even exist until season 2. If John Winston was with Checkov and Terrell on the landing part than "I never forget a face" would have been a nice touch giving Mr.Kyle a slightly bigger part. Interesting to hear James Doohan voicing Kyle in the animated trek.R.I.P John Winston
I’m glad that they had him as a reoccurring character, even if he was in the background. Compare this to Voyager, which was stuck in the Delta quadrant. They had endless background characters show up once and then never again, which is odd when they had no way to replenish its Starfleet crew.
This makes me think if Walter Koenig said something about not being on the main cast when Space Seed was filmed they could of switched Chekov with Kyle. Khan sneaking up behind Kyle and squeezes the back of his head til unconscious. 15 years later.... Khan: But you, I never forget a back of a head. Mister....Kyle.
Notice that during "The Immunity Syndrome", Kirk repeatedly refers to John Winston's character as "Mister Cowell". I took this as Shatner's way of differentiating between Winston's character on the Bridge ("Cowell") and Winston's character ("Kyle") in the Transporter Room. It's far from perfect, but it works for me. And since we kept seeing Kyle wearing utility coveralls in the Transporter Room in Year One and his rank was never referred to, I retconned that Kyle, the Transporter operator, was an NCO ("CPO Kyle" could be the supervisor for Transporters).
One of the unsung heroes that toil away in silence letting the glory hogs get all the attention . For every Jim Kirk there are 100 Mr.Kyles (see ? he didnt even get a first name at least it was not crewman number 7) behind the scene keeping the hero alive . At least he never fell victim to the dreaded Red Shirt death clause .
Mr. Kyle had finely-tuned survival instincts. Never around when it was time to draft a red shirt for the away team. Later parlayed this talent (and his galaxy-class blond pompadour) into a position as Vice President of the United Federation of Planets.
Apparently Mr. Kyle had a lot of responsibility on the ship that changed over time - red (command and helm), gold (engineering, security, and operations), but never blue (science and medical)
I always found it amusing that Kyle became Cowl for one episode even though the character of Kyle had already been established. No idea why they did that.
6.30. He sold his professional soul for an extra’s wage. He should have read his lines and walked away rather than perform them. Better to flip burgers if that was the only other option. 🏴
I like this, Kyle didn't get enough cred. R.I.P. John Winston.
ugh, irl redshirt death,
the worst redshirt death.
Thanks for this. I never realized Mr.Kyle was in so many episodes, and i have been watching Trek since the early 70's
Mr. Kyle - One of the few RED SHIRTS to survive...
Even the evil Mr. Kyle seems like a really nice guy.
Ditto for "evil Spock" 📺☺
Some people are just consistent in any situation.
Mr. Kyle solving a math problem in front of the main computer.
I never realized how often Mr Kyle appeared! He often seemed to get the bad end of the stick...
But at least he knew that he didn’t always wear a red shirt, so his survivability factor was a bit higher than regular crewmen.

awesome homage to JW! thanks for the post. His pal Lt Hanson (Billy Blackburn) was in many of the Kyle memorable episodes, lets salute him also....

Awesome set of videos about Mr Kyle, I never fully realized just how many episodes he was in, and how much screen time he received..
Unsung hero
Mr. Kyle was kind of a boss. I Never knew.
Mr. Kyle was the resident Brit!
The "O'Brian" of ToS... Imagine if ToS had gotten 7 seasons and S3+ was of the caliber of TNG !
Poor Mr. Kyle, just gets beaten up in every show 🥺.
A team player that one.
Poor Kyle and the Agoniser.
“Your Agonizer, please, Mister Kyle.”
No Mr. Spock!! I tried, I really tried! - Thomas Kyle
Mr. Kyle…the original Chief O’Brian…
This makes me think if Walter Koenig said something about not being on the main cast when Space Seed was filmed they could of switched Chekov with Kyle.

Khan: But you, I never forget a back of a head. Mister....Kyle.
He looked good in a beard in WOK, like Robin Hood.
Why does it seem Mr. Kyle was the forgotten member of the ream
The Bones double chop😅
He was supposed to be in "The Tholian Web" too but had a scheduling conflict, that great episode would have been even better

In the Trek fanzine, some people decided Kyle's personal name should be Winston. Works for me.

Now for Mr. Leslie ? lol
You didn't show the Mirror, Mirror clip with John Winston's voice as the male computer's voice!
No, Mr. Spock. No. I tried. I really tried!
Your agonizer, please.
I had no idea he was more than 5he transporter chief… engineer, helmsman, science officer… wow he could do anything.
I love "Mr. Kyle" he was so hot in the mid 1960s!! 😇
Apparently Mr. Kyle had a lot of responsibility on the ship that changed over time - red (command and helm), gold (engineering, security, and operations), but never blue (science and medical)
It looks like Mr. Kyle also switched from Command track to Operations track at some point.
Me Kyle was the epitome of what it meant to be a red shirt.
Mr. Kyle must've had brain damage with all the blows to his head.
Dammit now I have to do a deep dive on TOS
I always found it amusing that Kyle became Cowl for one episode even though the character of Kyle had already been established. No idea why they did that.
The scene when Spock beams RedJack off the ship while Kyle is sedated.
If you look closely Kyle was in WoK.
❤
Kirk keeps saying Mr. Kowl
Also Spock keeps saying Sens-sores
Also Shatner has a thick Canadian accent
So, did Commander Kyle die in Star Trek 2, The Rath of Khan?
No, the crew of the Reliant were transported down to Ceti Alpha by Khans lot then rescued
@trevorwilson3698 Alright! I love good news! Thanks!
Cool, but who’s Mr Kowl?
It's tough being a red shirt.
Why is Mr. Kyle always getting beat up? He's just a transporter chief.
Maybe if he'd stop ignoring the sound of the doors opening. 😮
Kyle was Star Treks first gay character. He would bunk with Sulu. There was only one bed.
1. Wears a red shirt
2. Name resembles word "kill"
3. I have no memory of this character
4. I THINK I KNOW WHY OMG! X_X
6.30. He sold his professional soul for an extra’s wage. He should have read his lines and walked away rather than perform them. Better to flip burgers if that was the only other option. 🏴
Your agonizer please.
Spock abused Kyle in both universes.
What’s with the Jesus nonsense at the end?
Kirk keeps calling him "Mr. Kowl" in that on episode. Weird.
Mulititasking Mr. Kyle, pulling data from the sensors for Mr. Scott and navigating the ship.
