Unpopular opinion: I think this version is grossly underrated.
A lot of people try to compare this one to the original film, and I think that is a huge mistake; it's like comparing apples and oranges. Both films have great moments and different reasons for why I love them so much.
So true. Both have their quirks like how this version is more darker in colors and tone on purpose, and the OG is brighter for the same reasons.
Even though most shun this version because of the comparisons to both, I think giving these two chances at being their own film respectively is the right thing. Even though I grew up on this one and remember it more vividly, I still think the two are both amazing
LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK, OP
Yeah, especially since they focus on different things. Original focuses on the Slugworth drama and the story is more of Charlie's perspective, and the 2005 dives into Wonka's backstories and is set on more of his perspective.
@@shiftyshinings1273 And yet the latter is more faithful to the book for that reason: while Charlie is a normal kid for from a morality perspective, the other kids were jerks from the start. Also, we get to see their punishments in this movie, compared to the 70s version where we don't.
@@robbiewalker2831 I think the lack of awareness of the book is why people just choose to hate on this movie. I'd have honestly loved to see a sequel with the Glass Elevator. I enjoyed both books as a child. I have never met another person ( that I am aware of) IN person that has read these books. It has only been online that I've encountered them.
This movie was definitely more closer to the book. Plus I like Johnny Depp’s version of Willy Wonka being this dark, sarcastic guy
Me too.
That said, once again the Glass Elevator is far too small, which would make the (often under read) sequel book's events, pretty impossible (where Charlie's whole family rides in it)
As it was in the 70s version, also.
Nah I don't really like Jhonny depps willy Wonka just a opinion :-
The other Wonka was better :33
His Wonka was okay......
This movie is the closest adaptation to the Roald Dahl Book that I read when I was on school. Plus Tim Burton Did a good job on making it happen.
I honestly don't know which movie I prefer. I like both of them
Me too.
@@twist_ending7545 me too.
Same
Actually in interviews Roald Dahl’s widow said that he most likely would have loved this version for its darker tone which was closer to his style. He hated the first movie because they made it friendlier.
Can we give a round of applause to the guy who did all the Oompa Loompas acting. They didn't copy and paste him dancing, each dance he did, he had to do multiple times in the different spots.
Right. There was one guy playing as all of them.
Seth MacFarlane, Eddie Murphy, step aside.
I agree. Deep Roy deserves an award for his work.
Ranjit!
Deep Roy lol legend
Apparently he got a massive paycheck for the work he did here. A million dollars
52:32 Fun fact, the scenes with Willy's dad collecting newspaper clippings of his son's successes is based on Tim Burton's own life. He had a falling out with his mother and didnt speak to her for years. When she got sick later in life he finally went to visit her and found out she had been collecting newspaper clippings of his awards and achievements and she had saved the ticket stubs for his movies (she had seen every single one). The scene makes me cry every time now.
It's a very touching story
That's really touching, I never knew that. No wonder the scene with dad in movie touched me a lot.
@@a.g.demada5263 it would be if it was true
is this actually a "fact"? where's this from?
No matter how much you think your parents never cared about you since you’ve been gone, they do. Find the proof of how much you meant to them by their actions, not by words alone.
Fun fact: Johnny Depp suggested Freddie Highmore for the role of Charlie after they acted together in ‘Finding Neverland’.
Veruca’s actress, Julia Winter, has Swedish origins, so she dubbed Veruca in Swedish dub.
I like fun facts in every way.
And it's thanks to Johnny Depp if Freddie Highmore had Charlie's role because he asked to Tim Burton to audionned him
@@a.g.demada5263 its thanks to Depp we have The Good Doctor🥲
@@XxPeriCo27xX yes, we can say that
I am Swedish and love this movie. How could I not know about her dubbing the Swedish version as well? Anyways thanks for that piece of trivia, it is actually really interesting to find out stuff like this (especially when it's connected to your nation)
Roald Dahl wrote an autobiography of his childhood, called 'Boy.' In it, he talked about how, when he was at boarding school, Cadbury's would send sampler boxes to all the students and ask them to send back their opinions on the new ones. The boys took this responsibility very seriously, and would send back thorough reviews in foodie terminology (using words like bouquet and aroma and palate). I loved that they included a brief nod to that, with young Wonka taking notes on the chocolates he ate.
You're right, I've read 'Boy,' but I never made the connection between what Mr. Dahl wrote in his autobiography, and what happens in the movie.
*Veruca Salt’s scene comes up*
Nick: “I really don’t want to be so mean to another kid again, I really don’t-“
Me: *dying* 💀😂
“But it’s Vercua tho”
Nicks so sweet even to kids that are rude and naturally mean and fictional lmao, love it ❤️😂
Its funny, I had just watched a Karen compilation video earlier and commented that maybe we should change "Karen" to Veruca.
Blame the parents, not the child. The parents were at fault for Veruca’s behavior.
For being the worst she got off pretty good just smelling bad for a bit. The other kids were maimed and disfigured for a lifetime.
Alot of people say " Johnny Depp was not good for this role " or " this wonka was terrible he acted like a child! " keep in mind that this wonka stayed inside his chocolate factory for YEARS with no one but his oompa loompas to talk to he wouldn't know how to communicate with other people that well. He acts like a child because his childhood was terrible and his father left him after he tried running away leaving him with no parental figure. I will admit that the Charlie in this wasn't my favorite, at times he seemed almost TOO nice whilst the original Charlie felt more like a child. Also this movie gave a reason to let Grandpa Jo go to the chocolate factory, he worked for wonka and he wanted to see what became of the factory after he was let go along with all the other people. And the background of the oompa loompas and where they lived before the factory was genius. All in all a great film in my opinion.
This Willy Wonka is like Michael Jackson confirmed
Also, it explains why Grandpa Joe knew so much about him. He did in the book, too, but there was no reason given.
@@montajedelespectador what dose this version of Wonka has in common with Michael Jackson?
@@shadie5180 i think they said that because in my comment i said willy wonka was trapped in the mind of a child because his childhood was terrible. "He loves putting Harry Potter characters in his movies..."
Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter have had a long working relationship. They were a couple at the time this movie was made.
They were even married
@@a.g.demada5263 They were never married, but they were a couple for thirteen years and had two children together.
Can say is inverse way, warner like use Tim Burton's muses on harry Potter franchise
>"He loves putting Harry Potter characters in his movies..."
*cough* Harry Potter actors....
As a fan of the book, I much prefer this version. Even the Oompa Loompa song lyrics are taken straight from the book word for word.
Fun fact: Every single oompa loompa in this movie was played by the same guy. Deep Roy. Think about that, every group shot, dance number, everything involving the oompa loompas was just this one guy being filmed over and over again! My personal favorite moment was when they ran into the oompa loompa secretary (Doris I think?)
Technically not every one. For example in the boat, most of them are actually animatronic puppets, as well as in other shots. CGI ones are also in several places, but all 3; actor, puppets, and CGI are mixed together so it's harder to tell them apart. A lot of the squirrels were also real squirrels, trained to open fake nuts and jump all over Veruca's double, they were also supplemented with puppets and CGI.
@@tau-5794 "The More You Know" theme plays. I stand corrected!
Burton was completely against using CGI if he could help it, and this is another example. All the squirrels you see? They're real.
In fact, they're rescue squirrels that Burton specifically hired someone to train them to do all these scenes. He even named them.
If you really want specifics, the real ones are whenever you get a close up of one, when they first attack Veruca, and when that one squirrel pushes the dad in after her.
If I recall, didn’t the original Veruca Salt, Julie Dawn Cole cameo during the scene where Charlie first discovered his golden ticket?
I honestly had no idea that this movie got so much hate, it was one of favs growing up and has always been so entertaining to watch. I must’ve watched it like 27 times or something, and it still manages to amaze me because I always notice something different every time I watch it. I quite enjoy the Tim Burton weirdness and darkness that oozes out of the movie!
I think because the original Gene Wilder version was/is so beloved, and it had been so long since the original had been released
I will always love how Charlie doesn't get the ticket on his first try! It's such an expectation subversion and keeps you interested because you don't know what other tropes they'll change!
I'm one of the few who prefers this version over the Gene Wilder one.
Something I really enjoy about this version is you see Charlie gets it, he understands Wonka's eccentric candy making. Each time Charlie chimes in you see how happy Wonka looks, that he's thinking "He's the one." He even seems to be rooting for Charlie as the tour goes on.
Honestly, I know this movie gets a lot of hate, but I really like it. I can't really say I like it more than the 1971 movie, I like them both equally but for different reasons. I appreciate that this version stays a bit more accurate to the book. While I agree Gene Wilder is the better Wonka, I really like how Johnny Depp plays up the weirder side of Wonka, showing that he's still a kid at heart, while Gene played up his more sarcastic side and played him kinda like an eccentric salesman. I think they're both good performances, they just focused on different aspects of Willy Wonka's personality. For Depp's version of Wonka, you gotta remember, this is a guy who spent about 20 years inside of a chocolate factory with no one to talk to besides Oompa Loompas. You'd act a little strange after a while too. I also don't mind them revealing more of his backstory. I think it helps him connect to Charlie a bit more. At the end, he doesn't understand why Charlie cares so much about his family, because he never made up with his own father. When they do make up, Wonka finally understands, and lets Charlie keep his family, and make the memories that he never had.
And I like the bad kids in this version better. The ones in the 1971 movie were bad kids, but I only remember Veruca being particularly awful. Here, all of the bad kids really are bad kids. Augustus only cares about what food he can put in his mouth next, Violet is blinded by her own pride and is all about the attention, Veruca is both manipulative and greedy, and Mike Teavee is a rotten little punk who doesn't even like chocolate. I also appreciate that the movie, while not a full-on musical, does have more variety in terms of the Oompa Loompa songs. And I agree, the score was fantastic.
I will say both Charlie and Grandpa Joe were better in the 1971 version. I like the ones in this movie, but the original two just had more charm to them. So overall, I would give the movie at least a 7/10.
Thanks for addressing how it follows the book and how it's not bad but different 🙂
I feel the same way. I like the new one way better.
my fav one is this one, as you can tell
When I read the book, and also Great Glass Elevator, I always pictured Willy Wonka being played by Joel Grey for some reason.
Agreed
According to people who suffer from flashbacks, Wonka's is actually a realistic depiction. In general, this movie does a very good job ad depicting mental illness.
In case you were confused this movie was not supposed to be a remake of the Wonka movie, it was an adaptation of the book, so the movies are vastly different.
Yeah, Tim Burton even banned the crew from watching the 70s movie until this one was finished.
Major props to composer Danny Elfman. Not only did he make a wonderfully twisted score for the movie, but when the bratty children are eliminated from the tour, the lyrics that he uses are actually pulled straight out of Roald Dahl's book.
The boat on the chocolate river and the boat scene is so much like the book, even in illustration! And the each song is 80-90% the original lyrics from the book too.
This version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory feels like it’s more in touch with the book. Let’s hope that the upcoming “Wonka” prequel will do just the same.
Indeed.
@@nathancruz9172 Yeah.
I sure hope so. I’d personally love to see references to the Great Glass Elevator with the vermicious Knids, the fly trap, Wonka-Vite and Vita-Wonk. I actually use the phrase minusland when talking about things that happened before I was born.
I hope it never airs. Timothee charlamet as wonka!? No thanks
A wonka prequel. good grief. .....
Universal rule: it's incredibly rude to not eat another culture's food. Even an introvert like Wonka knows this and powers through it.
It's only rude if you're not eating it because it's from another culture. If you're allergic to one of the components, it's not rude at all to leave it - it's called looking after yourself.
@Layton T. Montgomery fr...like why would someone be rude for not wanting to eat a cultures raw dishes and etc.
It's literally not rude🤦🏽♀️
Hell I can't even not eat food I dislike when it's offered to me by someone when I'm visiting their house. My mother taught me that I should just eat it, even if I hate it, to be polite. And never take seconds, as it's also rude.
Pretty sure it was some sour jelly.
Fun fact about the Bucket house: that's the reason why Roald Dahls widow gave the green light on this movie. She said it reminded her of Dahl's famous writing shed, and Burton happily told her it was designed to look like that for that exact reason
Great to know that.
We need more Johnny Depp in movies, he's just amazing of an actor.

I totally agree, he's a treasure in my eyes
Johnny Depp did such a good job in this movie. The whole cast and crew did an amazing job making this brilliant masterpiece.

The original was complete garbage and is only considered a classic because of nostalgia.
Tim Burton made sure that the writer's family was heavily involved in this production and made sure that any changes met with their approval (the writer had passed on by this point). Family did say that Dahl would have preferred this version for sure. I do actually prefer this version, even though I felt Gene Wilder did a much better job as Willy Wonka because of the points you mentioned.
Now if you want to see a Robert Dahl movie adaptation that HE himself did approve of, check out the animated movie, The BFG. Like all his works, it has both dark and whimsical elements. Now I said ANIMATED version. There is a live adaptation of it, but that's not as good as the animated version.
>> Family did say that Dahl would have preferred this version for sure
Did they? what's the source for this and "Tim Burton made sure that the writer's family was heavily involved in this production"? Tim Burton's website claims the former (but then it would do wouldn't it?🙄). I'd like to see an actual attributable primary source.
@@redcardinalist
You are a fanboy of the original aren't you?
i bet you haven't even read the damn books.
I thought Johnny Depp did a much better job, as well.
Roald Dahl would've preferred this one even though he wasn't able to see it, because Tim actually listened to Felicity (Dahl's wife) during production instead of shoehorning his name into the credits but disregarding all his inputs like the 1971 movie did. Also you could just watch the special features, they show the amount of care that went into this movie. Another fun fact, Burton designed the Bucket house after Dahl's famous writing shed, which is what got Felicity on board in the first place since that was Roald's inspiration for it in the book as well.
@@redcardinalistThe source is Dahls wife. Also, it was very well known that he hated the original Willy Wonka and was not quiet about it.
Fun fact! The ending where it's revealed Willy Wonka's father has framed newspaper articles of his son's life was inspired by Tim Burton's personal life. In 2002 he visited his dying mother in Utah and, even though the two never had a great relationship, she had framed movie posters of all his films on her walls.
Oh gosh... that's so sad, makes me see the scene in another light.
"supposidly" - if this is actually true...
@@redcardinalistConfirmed by Tim Burton himself. You can stop thinking it's a false claim once you use google for once in your life.
Neither film is the original as they are both based off the book by Roald Dahl, so it's best to compare them to the original source instead of each other. Anyway, the only reason why I see people hating this film is because they are too nostalgic over the other film. Now, don't get me wrong, nostalgia does play a part in why I prefer this movie, but it's definitely not the only reason why I do. This movie is closer to the book, and even has the same name as the book. It being a Tim Burton film (which is why it's darker than the other), with Johnny Depp, is just the icing on the cake. Although, the main thing that the other film got right, that this one didn't, is Charlie's personality. However, with this film, that change can be overlooked, because Tim Burton did it so well. That said, both films have catchy songs, and both are great adaptations of the book.
I like both.
I like both. The lyrics from the songs are pretty much spot on to the book.
As for which one made the Dahl family happier, this is the one they approve of. Dahl hated the one with Wilder.
I saw this one first as a kid in the theater. It made me lose my appetite.
>>Anyway, the only reason why I see people hating this film is because they are too nostalgic over the other film.
I don'y like this movie because its not very good. It's garish, Johnny depp is completely miscast and comes across as a creepy child molester character, complete with a costume that is obviously a "costume" (and WHAT is that stupid wig)...
42:43 no, that's where his father's dental office used to be. He said he wouldn't be there when Wonka came back, and he meant it. He literally abandoned Wonka as a kid.
"He loves putting Harry Potter characters in his movies" 😂😂😂 really what it is is Tim Burton has a HUGE reputation for casting his friends and family in his movies. You'll see Helena Bonham Carter (who he was in a relationship with for many many years) and Johnny Depp (his best friend) and I'm sure he also takes their input into consideration and casts actors they've developed a good working relationship with.
Yes, this two are like his favorite actors. I read Tim Burton made a lot of reference to his owns movies in his othees movies like the scissors in Willy Wonka's hand for " Edward Scissorhand "
Love this one so much more than the original:
Some facts I wanted to share on this film:
1, The chocolate room was 90% practically with a faux chocolate river,
2, Deep Roy who was the tiny man with the racing snail in The Neverending Story and Napoleon Bonesapart in Corpse Bride played all of the Oompa Loompas and I don’t mean they shot him once and copied with a computer no no no no! He did it all and did dance and singing practice for everything and the design is actually accurate unlike the green hair and orange faces from the 70’s film ans like I said before all of the Oompa Loompa songs come from the book and actually change to different eras with a 50’s mambo, 60’s disco, 70’s hippy song, and an 80’s rock ballad,
3, the squirrels were real squirrels and were trained from birth to do that scene,
4, the design of the Bucket’s home was inspired by a shack Roald Dahl would use to work on books,
5, not really a fact, but the updates are actually good like giving a back story to wonka which was something new and not anything before which Dahl’s family approved of since he died in 1990 so they oversaw all adaptations of his work,
-making Mike Teevee obsessed with video games and violent media is clever and the character that has the biggest update is Violet who actually has a character unlike in the previous film and even the book by making her this competition obsessed kid and an overbearing mother to boot,
-actually giving a reason for Wonka going to Oompaloompa land as “looking for new exotic flavors for candy”,
-another good update is with the tv room by having Wonka want to teleport chocolate through television for people to grab instead of just wanting to teleport because,
6, I only learned this recently, but the kid who plays Mike is the same boy who voiced the main character in Meet the Robinsons,
7, people complain saying Charlie is out of character and he isn’t like real kids, but that’s not true there is kids who think like him and care for their family and others often before their own needs also I love the fact
8, when Augustus says “Don’t you want to know our names?“ and Wonka replies “Can’t see how it would make a difference” it’s a double negative he’s toying with them and throughout the tour playing dumb even though he planned everything out,
9, something else I wanted to bring up is how people complain that Deep’s version isn’t like Gene Wilder’s and that’s the point he is like how he is in the book plus the fact he not only cut himself off from the world surrounding himself with chocolate obsessed little people and has pale skin from no sun exposure, no real sense of how to talk or deal with people (reading off cue cards and jumping back when hugged) also bring in his backstory it’s no wonder he would come out less like a James Bond villain (Wilder) and more like a nut who isolated himself from society,
10, the kid who played Augustus not only did not speak English, but didn’t know how to swim,
For more details and information I didn’t even get into I recommend watching these two part videos of Everything Great About Charlie and the Chocolate Factory:

Exactly, I actually have started to prefer Depps Wonka over the years. He portrays eccentric recluse much more believably. Gene was honestly almost too charismatic for someone who had shut themselves away for years.
Didn’t think about lots of the things you mentioned, so thanks for that James and appreciate your fun facts as always. And thank for attaching that video, will definitely look at it later!

Ironically, the songs are closer to the original books' songs. Odd that somehow burton made his adaptation a better 'adaptation' than the original film.
All that to say
I do prefer this version.
I think a real cool thing they did with the Oompa Loompa songs was that instead of the first movie, where they used the same song over and over, they used different styles from different decades.
The 50's Mamba for Augustus
60's Disco for Violet
70's Hippie music for Veruca
And 80's Rock for Mike
That’s what I figured.
Fun fact: The guy that designed the animatronics that are outside of Willy Wonka’s factory is the same guy that designed the puppets for the TV show:LazyTown.
I used to watch lazytown on Nickelodeon, when I was 7 years old.
Yeah, now that you mention it, I can totally see that.
No wonder why the puppet designs of lazy town felt so oddly familiar
I always wonder about the similarities between them
The intro is still hype and satisfying to this day, been rewatching it like soooo much.
Me too.
@@nathancruz9172 Also it really shows how different Wonka's factory is, like if he's Famous Worldwide and people go to him immediately then the Factory should look the part and not be like any other factory, having it resemble some ordinary factory which is just big and has some fancy stuff (not the kind of fancy there is in this Wonka's factory) in the original shouldn't be a factor why Wonka is popular.
52:19 This whole scene is based off when Tim Burton visited his dying mom and found out she made a scrapbook of all his movie reviews.
And now I'm wondering if Big Fish is based on that as well.
It's a very touching story
really, yet another story in thjis movie is based on something that supposidy happened in Tim Burton's life. This is probably the third of these Ive read about... It possible I guess, but colour me sceptical...

You will always be remembered as a legend.
I grew up in the 70's watching the original version and reading the book as well. I saw this version with my son when he was a child. I remember how much criticism this version got, but honestly I really liked it and thought it was a lot of fun. I like both movies. They're very different, but both good interpretations of the book. : )
One of the things I love about this film is the use of Deep Roy, the actor who played all the Oompa-Loompas. Shows how much they had to shoot with him and the amount of effort he put into the movements of each specific Oompa-Loompa.
Willy Wonka constantly running into the glass elevator gets me every time!
I'm so pleased you've seen this movie🍿 You know they used 40 real squirrels in this movie? They actually had to train them to crack those walnuts and crawl onto Veruca's stunt double. The actors playing Grandma Georgina and Grandpa Joe are Liz Smith and David Kelly. They were both really successful actors. I really liked them💜
the whole movie i was like "wait for it..." when nick said "oh this is going to happen?"
Notice how ominous the factory is in the beginning? That’s the first sign that something went seriously wrong. Compared to later, when we see a flashback of when it first opened.
honestly i'm so in love of the photography of this movie, the colour palette they used and how it was make.
Also, SHOUT OUT TO DANNY ELFMAN FOR THE INCREDIBLE SOUNDTRACK
They made it so Grandpa Joe used to work for Wonka so as to give him a legitimate reason for going with Charlie. Also gives a real explanation for how he knows so much about the factory.
YES YES!!! FINALLY THIS MOVIE!!! I'M PERSONALLY SO ATTACHED TO THIS FILM I KNOW I'M GONNA CRY, SO LET'S WATCH IT
actually this version is the closest to the book and the author or his descendents loved it more.
PS: i missed your reactions
Nick is just so positive! He's like a kid doing something for the first time and loving it. It's so nice watching his reactions since he reminds me of a friend's cousin who acts the same way as him when watching movies. I sadly can't see the cousin now since I'm in a different country so I like to watch Nick's reactions as sort of a coping mechanism of not being able to see them anymore :')
17:28 “Are you a dummy!?” -I loved this scene & how Charlie’s grandpa convinced him to go instead of selling the ticket 🍫🚫💸
This intro is so loud and I love it, but put yourself in my shoes for a moment.
Imagine you are sitting in the theatres watching this movie, the intro comes on, no sound. Then suddenly the sound works again and you feel like your head exploded. That was my first experience with this movie. I am thankful that the sound worked throughout from then on.
While some of your reactions surprise me (that you haven’t seen that particular movie before), I enjoy every single one that I watch. The wonder in your eyes and how immersed you are in the film is so refreshing to see, you’re so positive and happy in your videos and you never fail to cheer me up. So happy I found your channel, wishing you all the best always and thank you for all you do ♥️.
If you get the chance, have a read of the book. It might surprise you with what each movie changed and what it didn't. I mean, I know why the 1971 movie didn't have squirrels, but the whole thing with someone pretending to be Slugworth to tempt the kids to steal actually made the movie stronger. And just so you know, Wonka had no backstory in the book. He actually insisted on bringing the family from the start. The end of the book has the grandparents asking if there's anything to eat at the factory, and Charlie's response.
The toothpaste from the Dads factory is called Smilex. It's a direct reference to Tim Burton's Batman, which is what Joker called his brand of poison.
Oh, great. I heard Tim Burton likes make references to his owns movies. There's another one : the scissors in Willy Wonka's hand during the opening of the chocolate factory
As much as I like Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory, I honestly liked Charlie And The Chocolate Factory a little bit more than Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory, I know most people would get mad at me, but at the end of the day, it’s my opinion, we all have different tastes
Glad you put most because I actually love this one more.
Looks like this is my boat because me too
Same here, I just enjoyed this one more than the other one - like some elements of the older movie where just weird. And you never knew what happened to the kids. They are mostly considered to be dead, which sucks because they are not this "bad" like in this version, they are children who have their issues.
i honestly prefer to go back and watch this version over the other one. I appreciate the darker tone, more Willy backstory and how it's more book accurate. It would have been interesting if it did the version where the bad kids die, don't know if it was in the book or not it's been a while since I read it, but it would have scarred children who went to see it so I get it.
Also I would like to point out that Willy Wonka planned out all the situations where the bad kids get taken. Agustus if he went against his gluttonous tendencies he would have been fine. Violet would have been fine if she listened and wasn't so competitive to prove herself. Veruca he tested her to see if she would give up her selfish ways. When she didn't listen he purposely stopped her dad from going to help her, till she was gone so he could get punished. Willy also knew that Mike would choose the TV room if he was able to, and tested to see if he would not let his arrogance and impulses control him. Charlie I guess it would make sense not to know how to test him because he just won the ticket the day before. However, I like to believe it's because Willy already had a suspicion that he was the worthy winner, and it was more proven by how much he seemed to understand Willy's points of view. Sorry for the long explanation but I just think it's so interesting how they chose to represent Willy Wonka in this movie.
Not exactly die in the book, just went through some misfortune on themselves. In the book, Augustus went from the fat boy he was to a boy as skinny as a pole from being pushed through in that pipe, Violet’s a lovely shade of purple after being squeezed in the juicer in the juicing room, Veruca and her parents were covered in garbage from the garbage chute, and as for Mike, he was stretched fifty feet tall from the taffy puller.
There are very little movies where they depict the book so well. And this is just one of them, the family who helped make the original book he did the older version, and they liked this version better, because it’s more true to the book. And I hate it when people say that it’s a dark movie, but it’s not really, it’s just more realistic in a way, Willie has been stuck inside his factory for the past 20 years. Without talking to anybody, so of course I will make them awkward, a little nutty, strange even, and very pale, cause he never comes out 💁🏻♂️
So there’s a Lotta different things between the original this one, but the reason why somethings are missing and somethings are put in, it’s because they’re trying to make it more or like the book. For example the candy man that sings, he was never in the book that’s why he is not in this movie
I can recommend to watch ,,Fantastic Mr. Fox” also based on Dahl’s book.
Don’t forget Matilda.
James and the giant peach
Wallace and Grommet, show mainly.
Growing up I loved watching the Gene Wilder movie. I have loved Tim Burton movies my whole life and so I was excited to see this in theaters - - unfortunately, I did not like this when I first saw it. But this has become one of my favorite movies over the years and now I really love it. Now I really love both Willy Wonka movies. So goood! So excited to now watch your reaction :)
This one is more loyal to the book as well
I can’t wait to see you continue The Legend of Korra!
I dislike how people keep on comparing the old film and the new film, and I personally can't stand how people always get so aggressive towards one or the other (mostly this version).
They're two individuals films based on the same book: one is not the predecessor or remake of the other, it's not a competition, and they're both iconic in their own way.
I like the new one more, only because it's the one I grew up with and because it's more faithful to the original story.
Tbh this is my favourite version. (No I haven't read the books, tbh until this version of the movie I didn't know that a book existed-) a lot of people seem to dislike it, so I understand the criticisms even if I completely disagree. Though I do like to think people seeing the original might influence their opinions quite a bit, that's why I don't even like to compare the two, I see them as their own very unique expiriences.
If I were asked to compare them, I DO think this one did something a bit better though with Charlie. In the original, Charlie breaks the rules like all the other kids, Wonka just wasn't there to see it (and just like the other kids, Charlie could've gotten hurt just like them from the fan, but got lucky and figured out a solution), so I personally like that that didn't happen in this one. BUT again, I do like the bubble scene! It was cute, just in overarching narrative, y'know.
I also LOVE how much darker and duller it is, it's so different and, cold? Idk how to describe it. And I also loved the side story with his father, and I just can't help it I love how it wrapped up and everything.
Even if you preferred the older movie, I'm still glad you gave this one a fair shot.
I read the book as a kid, and loved it. So I of course saw this movie when it came out , before I ever saw the Gene Wilder one. I loved this movie, and I definitely still have a lot of nostalgia for it (even if the Violet transformation scene scared me a lot as a kid, for some reason). Only part I didn't like as a kid was the ending, because it was changed from the book, where Wonka just happily accepts Charlies family. I appreciate the differences now, but as a kid, I didn't like it, since I loved the book so much XD
I saw the Gene Wilder one when I was a teenager, and I enjoyed it too. I don't have any nostalgia for it though, so I still somehwat prefer this one. I'm glad I didn't see the Gene Wilder one when I was a kid though, I would have HATED it, with how much it changed things from the book! (and to be clear, that was what I meant as a child, as an adult now I very much appreciate changes that add something, and don't think everything has to be 1-to-1).
I don't really like it when people compare the movies, since they're so very different takes on the story. And I really don't think they're meant to or should be compared. I enjoyed both Wonkas, even if people love to hate on Johnny Depps portrayal because it's so different to Gene Wilders performance.
I think they're both fine, though I probably enjoyed the book version more than either of them.
I also love the music in this one, I think both movies have different types of songs that work great for their respective movies. I actually really like how Verucas song calls out her parents for making her such a spoiled brat.
Loved this reaction, and don't worry about being mean to the kids, the characters were meant to be hated XD
Something else I never knew there was an explanation for: Violet's clothes don't rip because they're soaked with blueberry juice.
Oh, good point. But what about the fact she's always blue at the end ?
@@a.g.demada5263 something they couldn't do anything about, even after dejuicing. There's even a blue Oompa Loompa that appears in Violet's song to prove it.
@@videohistory722 ah ok. At least, it can be a good artist name if she decide to join a circus
Got to love how they show the realistic collateral damage something like a golden ticket hunt would cause on people like Charlie's dad.
You remind me of a friend who we could get to cry by showing her anything remotely sentimental. It's adorable. :D
you can have a different opinion when you realize Burton stayed as close as he could to the book where the director for the original purposely dismissed the author from the creation.
Willy Wanka = offended author
Charlie = praised the author
Doesn't matter whether Willie Wonka's version offended the author, I bet they're not offended enough to get royalties from that movie....SMH!!! Face facts, majority of people like Willie Wonka's version better than Charlie's.
@@lirpa2300 why, cuz
"The original is better?"
No!
Tim Burton had put a more realistic setting on Willie Wanka, if you lock yourself up for 15 years you'd also be a bit awkward around people too.
And the whole point of Charlie being a more angelic Charlie than the original is the fact that he was MEANT to be this. He was MEANT to learn at a young age that life is tough and family is all you got. The original Charlie didnt know that and was selfish as fuck!!
I personally don't see how ANYONE could like the original film cuz I personally find it fuckin boring!!
There's so many things as to why Tim Burton's film is so much better than the original but those are the main two.
@@lirpa2300 The author literally only made the first one because it was the first thing he was offered
@@XxPeriCo27xXif you can’t see how anyone likes the original it’s because you aren’t trying to because you are really immature and get insecure and cry like a baby when people don’t like the new movie. Do you see how you responded to that? You got so mad, but no. It really doesn’t matter if a movie offended the author of the source material. You’re insecure because you feel like your opinion is the minority. So you’re either a normal kid or a dumb adult.
Is Roald Dahl a screenwriter? No. Is he a film critic? No. Did Roald Dahl have a very judgmental worldview and narrow moral compass? Yes.
It’s fine if you like Angelic Charlie but that it literally the definition of boring. Charlie has no agency or reason to do anything, other than stand around and get rewarded for not being a screw up. He has no character arc and never has to prove or learn anything.
You can think the book is better, but remember that everyone says that all the time. Make sure you actually think that, because it is one of things everyone thinks because everyone says it.
@@lirpa2300 your nostalgia is making you brain dead and blind.
Notice how he gave her every opportunity to back out with the gum? He knows exactly what's going to happen, but he still really doesn't want to see it happen again.
Well, he said it's a prototype so it's obviously not to the point
I just wanna say NICK I love watching your videos so much. You gave me such joy last year and I'm ready for your videos this year
Thanks so much, so glad you have been enjoying them!
As another note, this was the first movie I saw Annasophia Robb in. Her role in Bridge to Terabithia was a couple of years later, so understandably she was probably a better actress by then. Also, she played a more likable character. She also lost sympathy points as Violet for what happened to her because she survived this movie, while she gets all the sympathy as Leslie. I cry every time I read or see Bridge To Terabithia.
“Is that where he built his factory?” No. His dad said he wouldn’t be there when he got back, and he wasn’t. The whole apartment was gone.
Nick, Willy's Dad is Christopher Lee, he played Saruman in Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Sleepy Hollow, Corpse Bride and also he was part of many Tim Burton movies. So talented.
Unfortunately, he passed away in 2015.
Did you mean Sleepy Hollow instead of Sweeny Todd? Because I don't recall him being in Sweeny Todd.
@@LadyFeline3 Yeah, sorry, i was confused about the names
In case you wanted to know, last time in the original movie with the bubble scene the actors ended up receiving chemicals burns to their skin and eyes. So even if the actors in this movie were promised that they were going to use a safe bubble product to shoot the scene, its likely that too many were still unwilling to participate due to the malpractice of that scene last time, and they refused to do it anyway. Probably why that scene wasn't in this one
That scene wasn’t in the book and this ones follows the book very closely
I still have a hard time coming to grips with the fact that Danny Elfman is that guy from Oingo Boingo. Now I have the Weird Science theme in my head
Fun fact! The first time Willy Wonka ran into the glass elevator, he did it on accident. The actors of Charlie and Joe were confused because it wasn’t in the script. They decided to leave it in. To cover up the fact that it wasn’t on purpose, they decided to have him do it on purpose in the scene where he goes to see his father.
You might be the only reactor that left in reactions to the Oompa Loompa songs. I keep seeing reactors completely skip every last bit of them. It is appreciated.
Much as I like the original, I feel like nobody but Depp could pull this wonka off after watching him play the Hatter in Alice in Wonderland
This was the first version I watched since it came out when I was a kid, so my mother and aunt took me to watch it on cinema since they liked the first version. And while they were kinda upset bc they liked the original better, I remember enjoying this version a lot! Ofc it is weirder and darker, but aside from being a Tim Burton movie, I feel like it had a purpose for being like that. I like that they didn't sugarcoat the kids' mess or their parents being the ones to blame for them to be spoiled rotten. The only thing I didn't like was that Charlie is the ideal "perfect" child here that never gets lured by curiosity. In the first one it made sense for him to also break some rules, bc kids are like that too, even the most polite ones.
Btw I'll never forget the musical version of Veruca's song. The squirrels basically dismember her, it's totally gruesome, I don't think even Tim Burton would have the guts to do that lmao
This one IS actually closer to the book, although they also added some elements that were not in the book(s) but for a film, I prefer the older version, personally.
Also we used to use real physical items as currency, tribes do that and the Oompa Loompa's praise cocoa beans because they're valuable, if something is valuable like Osmium, Blood Diamonds and Exotic ingredients, they have value and it needs to be again valuable to be usable as currency for tribes or whatever.
Everytime we watch *House Of Wax* (the 2005 movie) ,and the museum melts at the climax, I say (in my best David Kelly voice) "The Prince sent an urgent telegram to Mr. Wonka requesting a new palace..." which is usually followed with a chorus of "Do you have to make that same dumb joke every time?!"
There's actually a lot about this movie that I genuinely like. The soundtrack is fantastic, Tim Burton's visual flair really fits the weirdness inherent to the story, the additional material taken from the book is great, and I think in some places they actually did the other characters better than in the original movie, especially the other grandparents. Also glad that they actually showed us that the kids were still alive. -(stupid dark Internet theories...)-
All that said, this movie's biggest flaw for me is, unfortunately, Wonka himself, for a lot of reasons that people have probably said already. Like, Wonka's weird, but he's not _this_ kind of weird. And I think giving him a backstory really hurts the whimsical mystique that the character is supposed to have. Also maybe it's just me, but I think this version of Charlie is a little bland, and I actually liked the struggle with Slugworth's offer that he was given in the 70's one.
All in all I prefer the 70's Gene Wilder movie, but I don't think this one isn't without its own merits, and it actually does have some good stuff going for it.
As someone who didn’t grow up watching the Gene Wilder version, I personally enjoyed this version a bit more. There are great take aways from both films. I really enjoy a lot of the songs from the first version but I’ve read the book before and felt this one rang closer to it.
Idk why but the gene wilder version makes me uncomfortable 😭
@@stayhomewearamask3318 For me the older version has a really weird ending, it ends really abruptly
I appreciate this version because it's closer to the original source material. Especially the portrayal of Wonka himself. But the original was much more fun. What really bothered me was how they didn't leave open the door for the sequel "Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator." It ended with the Great Glass Elevator adventure either already over, or not even possibly happening.
But now they're doing a prequel. Personally, that doesn't really excite me. MOST prequels are unnecessary because the ultimate end of a story or the end of a particular character's story has already been revealed. Like the Star Wars prequels (Episodes 1-3)... we already knew the pertinent basics and how it would end. However, some prequels are perfectly fine because the prequel's storyline has nothing to do with the storyline from those that came before it. Like Prometheus.
I totally remember this movie Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. It was such a good movie. To this day I still love this movie a lot.
It’s really cool that the chocolate river set is all real, no CGI!
Even all the candies were real
I loved your reaction! I think one important point to bring up with this movie is that it's not a remake of Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory, it's an adaptation of the book. Both directors had their own interpretations of it, and that explain how some things could be that different (missing scenes, for exemple, or completely different song and atmosphere) yet really similar on other. It may take away a bit from this movie to compare it with the first movie as a remake!
I do hope that you like it somewhat because this actually takes after the book more. The other adaptation wasn't liked by the authors family or something because it didn't honor the book well. Plus after all those years he would be low key insane and have some flashbacks bc he's lonely
Whoooo!! Happy New Year btw!! 😊
Fun fact: compared to the lyrics provided in the actual book, this movie has the more accurate Oompa-Loompa songs. Sure they took liberties with the musical themes/genres, but the lyrics are taken from the book.
I think one thing to bear in mind that a lot of people forget is this movie is not an adaptation of the origional movie, it's an adaptation of the book hence the songs having the lyrics from the book, and having some background on Wonka though the movie has way more than the book, and with the squirrels they were in the book not geese but there wouldnt be a way to fully realise that scene properly in the origional at the time so they switched it to geese instead
I can't get over how this movie, as weird as it is, actually takes the lyrics from the book into the songs. I just love that little fact so much. Part of me also wishes we got the different version of the story where Roald Dahl wrote more kids, like 1 being a girl who was so up tight since her dad was a principal of a school and a french pretty boy (if I remember right).
The Roald Dahl Museum even have a draft of a song from that version, which involved a girl who was able to do whatever she pleased.
@@strawberrysoulforever8336 I think I did see online! But I will have to look again. It's really interesting how he had so much to say but had to slim it to only 5 kids.
Deep Roy played all the Oompa Loompas in Charlie and The Chocolate Factory and learned to dance for the role. You might remember him from "The Never Ending Story".
And yes, Wonkas whole backstory got the thumbs up from Roald Dahl's widow.
Also, Wonka has braces because it's a nod to something similar Tim Burton went through as a kid.
I wonder how this reboot would look if Nicholas Cage starred as Willy Wanka...

That effect of Charlie’s hand reaching into the TV screen reminded me of when they did something similar in The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle (2000).
BTW, you should react to that too! It’s hilarious and seriously under-appreciated!
it took me a long time to realize that the little boy that plays Charlie, is the same guy that is in The Good Doctor which is a great show
As someone who was a child when this was released I hadn't seen the original one before, I really did enjoy this. I like how it is kinda dark children's movie in some ways and I enjoy Johnny Depp's Willy Wonka even more now as an adult. It was fun to re-watch this after so long with you Nick.
Couldn't be any more dark than how original Wonka is in that Tunnel Ride, it had horrific imagery in the background and that terrifying singing, I also dont get how that screaming is family friendly.
