  • This is a video of my first big screw-up as a private pilot. It was a huge embarrassment when I found out the gear lights were in night mode. I was also running with the NAV lights on and they already dim the landing gear lights. I hope you all learn from my mistake. Always follow the checklist. I skipped one item, and it led to a very nerve racking flight. The problem was made worse with the terrible mag check during the first attempt to get to Sedona (KSEZ). I am happy with the way I handled it though. It is good to know that if the gear lights did not illuminate after pulling the lever down that I will be able to cope with it. The airplane is a 1976 Piper PA-28R-200 (N6952J) that I rented from Scottsdale Executive Flight Training. These videos are for ENTERTAINMENT, not for instruction. I just thought I'd share a video of a stupid mistake that I made. I know that I will probably make many more mistakes in my aviation career...

never in 32 years of flying have I ever heard of leaning the mixture during the pre flight check I was surprised that you were constantly adjusting the mixture during your manoeuvres, and at one point the mixture lever looked almost closed . Anyway Thanks for posting, I like the panel it looks sweet .

As long as you are not at full power, doing a runup at 1,700 or 1,800 RPM is perfectly fine with the mixture leaned. You won t get high CHTs dueing a runup even with a mixture aggressively lean. What can happen is that you may have trouble to actually reach 1,700 or 1,800 RPM is too leaned. In that case, adjust the mixture to reach the desired RPM. It will prevent the carbon deposit on the spark plugs until you are ready for take off especially during hot days.
By the way, having the mixture aggressively leaned is also a good thing in case you forgot to set full rich prior applying take off power, you will notice right away that the RPM are not going up.

Aside from all the armchair quarterbacking, I appreciate that you shared this with the world. it could help someone down the road.

That was a good choice to not pursue. Why is the sound so saturated?

Why didn’t you try and adjust your dimmer? I have a arrow and if you have a flat spot in the dimmer you wont see the lights at times. Also why not pull the emergency gear down to ensure that they were down and locked?

Arrow Pilot II Why don’t you read the video description?

Michael Van Heemst I was watching it before it got to the end then saw it. Glad you landed safely and I bet you probably won’t make the same mistake again.

I was surprised to see you take off with your mixture not set to full rich. Based on ATIS, your first start was under 3,000’ DA. I didn’t get the Bravo info, though...what was the DA for your second attempt?

I always lean for best power. It’s just something I was trained to do. Doesn’t matter what the DA is I always lean for best power

@@MichaelVanHeemst interesting. I’m getting checked out in an Arrow II and getting my complex endorsement. I’ve never heard of leaning on takeoff unless the DA was greater than 3k’ (or 4k’ on some airframes). Rod Machado has a good video on leaning during takeoff-have you seen it? I did know about excess fuel cooling the engine, but I didn’t know about the increased fuel being supplied during takeoff until I saw his explanation.

TL:DR Jerry's nephew rents a plane and absolutely fucking hates the engine or has a vendetta against the flight school. No wonder they sold the aircraft
