Pixies started alternative rock in the late 80s. They were never really commercially successful, but their sound inspired a lot of later bands of the 90s and early 2000s.

They were such a phenomenon by the late 80s, and I can remember when I bought their first EP and we played the hell out of it. And then it wasn't but a year or two later that I saw them when I came through my college town. We were all so blown away from the very start about how different they sounded, but you could hear all these other references that we were familiar with, including even the Beatles.
What an incredible band, and I love their solo stuff as well. Black Francis in the Pixies was just Frank Black later, and of course Kim Diehl went off and started The Breeders.
Saw them live at least three times and it was always a party, lol. So good.

Yeah, we all bring our own perspective to the lyrics. According to Frank/Francis/Charles, it is literally about swimming in the Caribbean, however. Was very different at the time. Hugely influential band, and still putting out great music. Though that song has been used in movies and media more than any of their others, probably their most iconic songs would include tracks like "Gouge Away" (Francis's favorite) or "Monkey Gone to Heaven" that have more of the loud-quiet-loud motif for which they are known.

Released in 1988, a year after I graduated…. This great song and many others that it defined moved me into adulthood, the whole alternative rock scene grew from these great performers.

From the 80s. They influenced alot of bands of the 90s, including Nirvana.

Late 80s, and also I never even thought about it being about being high although I suppose it's possible. I generally got the feeling of an edgy way to reference depression and mental illness.
Man I bet you would really like a lot of Pixies. All of their albums were great, but after Surfer Rosa, then Doolittle came out and they just exploded. Two huge hits from that one were, Here Comes Your Man, and, Monkey's Gone To Heaven.
