    I recommend listening to the entire album that this is on, "Doolittle", which also contains the amazing "Monkey Gone To Heaven" and "Here Comes Your Man". The only time I got to see The Pixies perform, in 2010 at University of California, San Diego (UCSD), they played the whole "Doolittle" album, in order. Speaking of odd songs, bassist Kim Deal had a side project for awhile called The Breeders, and their song "Cannonball" is a crazy, odd, good time.

    I am a huge Pixies fan, and I appreciate your reacting to their music. Of course, any Pixies song you react to, or Breeders, or Frank Black solo, I will be 100% behind, but three songs emblematic of their sound that I recommend for your listening pleasure are Caribou, Monkey Gone To Heaven, and Wave of Mutilation. Pixies is a band you can really do a deep dive on and become obsessed with. Have fun with 'em!

    Pixies were, for me personally, like a soundtrack for the entire nineties decade. They were so original, like a genre all onto itself. Imho, their music is timeless. I'm honestly a little offended that history hasn't given them the recognition I was so sure they'd be getting. Ah well, same goes for The Jam, XTC, ... Guess time can only remember so many bands. Too bad though...
    Great reaction. Love it you got to know them.

    Pixies were also a major influence on some great alternative bands including Radiohead, Pavement, The Strokes... I lost my ticket to see them at a small venue in the early 90's when U2 asked them to be their opener, Radiohead refused to follow Pixies at a festival saying it should be the other way around (forcing the promoter to move Pixies to an earlier night), and David Bowie attributes the famous Velvet Underground quote to them 'few purchased albums, but everyone who did, started a band' in this interview ruclips.net/video/A7VhNjZXALU/видео.html

    I think Gigantic is a great song. Caribou is really good too. You should listen to some Sonic Youth too. Many grunge rockers were heavily influenced by Sonic Youth. Sonic Youth came even before The Pixies. You won't believe that they were in the 80's too. Both Pixies and Sonic Youth were way ahead of their time.

    Any and every song off of Doolittle. In addition to the dynamics, they really played with non-traditional song structure, harmonics and noise as accents. They incorporated surf rock, punk, rock, etc. and they do still sound so fresh. Nothing 80's about them at all. They were definitely pioneers and are the band that most people don't know, but all of the bands they love love this band.

    Check out Vamos, another inspired by Charles' study year in PR. Local guys with nothing to do would hang around on street corners yelling at female American tourists (hey blondie!) desperate for one of them to take them back to the US. Musically the song draws on 2 Broadway classics; Porgy and Bess (in the chorus) but thematically on West Side Story, the story of PR immigrant experience in the US. The song also features this weird mimicking of a sound cue found in dumb US sitcoms of the 70s and 80s. You can hear it in Joey's guitar at the midpoint of the two part chorus (there are no verses weirdly). Its placement in the song is just so weird but surrealism of the Lynchian variety circa Blue Velvet was a really strong influence on early Pixies songwriting.

Come On Pilgrim is short but really good; Caribou, Vamos, Nimrod’s Son, and I’ve Been Tired all stand out to me. Bossanova is a very odd album that may be pretty hit or miss for you, though I love it; Velouria is an excellent song and Is She Weird? is another one that I think is very solid. As noted by others, the video is from the movie "Trainspotting," which deals with heroin addiction.

    the pixies got me through high school. At a show, I bought a comp cd of japanese bands covering pixies songs. I don't remember what it was called.

    Dude, you clipped the beginning AND the end!
    Monkey Gone To Heaven, Gigantic (sung by Kim Deal), Debaser and Cactus are all good places to go after this.

    They are still putting out good music, innovating, and influencing. These would all go onto my Pixies playlist:
    "All I Think About Now:"
    "Gouge Away";
    "All I Think About Now:"
    "Brick Is Red"';
    "Dig for Fire;"
    "Head Carrier;"
    "I Can't Forget";
    "Into the White";
    "Cactus";
    "No. 13 Baby";
    "Wave of Mutilation";
    "Silver Bullet".

      Oh, and songs aside from Pixies that might fall into the "something different" category, try some Ryuichi Sakamoto: an entry point might be "Bamboo Houses" (also "Forbidden Colors", both done with David Sylvian).

    Awesome band, is there any other PIXIES songs you should check out??? All of them!!! Such a varied sound and bazar lyrics. My faves All Over the World, Cactus, Debaser, Hey, Is She Weird, Umas.
    Have been lucky enough to see PIXIES 3 times in Australia and Frank Black (Black Francis aka Charles Thompson) once.

      Love "Cactus" - what girlfriend wouldn't want her guy to sing that to her? Makes me smile and think at the same time.

    Want to check out a weird song? How about “Sensurround” by They Might Be Giants. It’s all about the singer thinking about when he first became interested in sounds (and music). Digging into the lyrics is VERY interesting and shows the bands creativity lyrically.

    Kurt also admired P J Harvey. Her early work was jaw dropping. God, the Devil, Angels, &, err, intercourse. A lot of that. Also empathy, compassion ... everything really. This is a brilliant concert : ruclips.net/video/MWTPYEryrys/видео.html. You might find the encore (37.25 on) interesting.

    Pixies were the anti make a music video for MTV back in the day. Any official music video they made back then was meant to be a joke. If you react to their official Here Comes Your Man or Velouria videos, know that they were done as a joke. They did warm up to making better videos like Allison and Head On. Last year when you were reacting to Halloween songs I requested you to check out "On Graveyard Hill" from their 2019 album.

    Hi. Late to the party here, but the video is taken from the movie Trainspotting, which is a necessary to watch.
    But I bought Surfa Rosa LP in college in 1988. GIGANTIC is a great song with Kim singing instead of Frank. And Debaser!!!!
