Also bright dark missionary below 70 too in order to standardize tanks across all Ultimates. DRK DMG at that level is pretty poor as is, so missing a whole raid wide mit makes DRK a poor choice overall I feel.

    Throwing in my two cents as a dungeon tank user, DRK feels the most lacking in terms of damage mitigation to me. Pulling big groups is the most stressful of the four classes with less defensive buffs. I can heal myself or protect my team fine with the other three but without life steal from solo combos the health drains significantly more, my hotbar is definately the least busy of all the tanks for sure.

    • @bsc649
      @bsc649 Год назад +14

      Dark Mind is in such a weird place. Right now savage/ultimate are *overwhelmingly* magic damage, so it's so powerful in that context (free 10s 20% mit every 60 seconds on top of Oblation and TBN) that DRK often has the *most* mit of the 4 there, but then trash pulls are almost all phys damage so it's basically worthless in dungeons.

    • @twistyseult
      @twistyseult Год назад +3

      What I've found useful when trash pulling as DRK in dungeons is to save abyssal drain for when your health is low. It's basically almost a full heal OGCD if you use it in a big pull. That and remembering to pair TBN with a defensive cd makes it feel not THAT bad in dungeons imo.

    • @CrackSmack
      @CrackSmack Год назад +1

      In big dungeon pulls I’m basically doing tbn as soon as it comes up unless the pack is 3 or less. I start with ramp tbn and oblation, then if that’s not enough I go with shadow wall tbn and oblation, and usually that’s all that’s needed for the big ones. Saving abyssal drain for when I’m low is important too, especially for those really big packs.

    • @scoobiusmaximus9508
      @scoobiusmaximus9508 Год назад +1

      TBN more. If you're using a not free Flood of Darkness/Shadow and you weren't about to overcap mp that is mitigation you lost. In trash pulls it will almost certainly break unless a WHM is spamming Holy, so use it more and your issues will probably be resolved.
      I would say that in trash pulls DRK's sustain is worse than PLD's and of course nothing can touch Warrior, but it's still better than GNB.

    as a tank main, i def agree on GNB and DRK being a tonnnn more busy than the other 2 tanks. they essentially have dps burst windows, while being tanks. although GNB's timing is far more strict than DRK with its burst. For people who want an easier time tanking WAR is def the right pick. and for people who wanna tank, but still have a rotation on the level of a DPS, GNB is a good pick.

    • @SubduedRadical
      @SubduedRadical Год назад +2

      I personally think, whenever you're in Passage of Arms, Shield Bash should be usable and should have some really high damage multiplier (like how everything else does under Requiescat and Holy Spirit does under Requiescat and Divine Might) making it more or less damage neutral (don't want it to be a damage GAIN since that would have people using Passage as part of an "optimal rotation", so it should be ~ neutral), but basically where you have a button you can slam and get a big "smack the enemy in the face" animation.
      Heck, the intro cinematic to Endwalker basically has the WoL PLD doing it! Just being able to do that during Passage would be amazing.
      After that, I personally would combine FoF into Requiescat (remove the requirement to be in melee for Requiescat) since you always use them together now anyway, and just...removing Goring Blade splitting its damage across Swords anyway (which would have the added bonus of making missing a crit not hurt as much). Or make Shield Bash turn into it. I dunno, just something because it's kind of just...there...because vestigial, I guess. And no one really likes that much. And PLD is probably the most button bloated Tank, so combining those buttons (FoF/Requi, Shield Bash/Goring Blade) would probably be better for people's hotbars anyway.

    • @Force-Multiplier
      @Force-Multiplier Год назад +2

      @@SubduedRadical anything would beat Shield Bash to be honest but what you're proposing is actually a good idea
      i would personally love an attack (with the properties i mentioned as its animation) that gets boosted if used right after passage of arms and the boost is that it has a % of damage increased by the number of players we shielded with Passage of Arms this would be a gorgeous thing and my favorite skill in the entire game if they add it to PLD

    Really glad continuation's range was increased, but feels weird to not also grant that range boost to blasting zone. Though personally with that animation I feel like anything less than it being a 10 yalm line aoe isn't doing it justice. Though personally its biggest issue is how demanding the rotation is. Every tank has little things they can do to optimize burst windows for a bit of extra damage. Bringing in additional beast gauge, having a dark arts proc, divine might proc. Gunbreaker doesn't have any additional damage it can get, only damage it can lose. Fuck up your rotation at all, say goodbye to double down in raid buffs. Downtime in fights is a nightmare to deal with. Still hoping they make it so that it has no cartridge cost at some point.

    • @scoobiusmaximus9508
      @scoobiusmaximus9508 Год назад +1

      I think they should just throw a cartridge generation on Sonic Break. That pretty much resolves the issue of not being able to Double Down in a reasonable time unless you actually came into No Mercy with 0 Cartridges and Bloodfest is on cooldown... which would kind of be your own fault at that point.
      I disagree with your argument that GNB can only lose damage while other tanks can optimize, I would argue that any tank not optimizing is losing damage. If a Warrior is going into raid buffs with less gauge than they could have that's a damage loss, if a PLD doesn't have a Divine Might proc that's a damage loss. Not getting Double Down under raid buffs is bad, but so is not getting Primal Rend or Confiteor. The only real difference is Double Down has a resource cost.

      WAR sucks to optimise at lower levels thanks to inner release being weaker than storm's path, but once you get fell cleave at level 54 then it feels really nice and it's smooth sailing from there. I would say PLD is easier to get into for ARR, then after that WAR.

    My Abyssos static had some healing problems that we didn’t address well, and it ultimately culminated in me dying THREE TIMES to the tankbuster bleed (not even autos, just the bleed) in P5S as a DRK despite using the appropriate amount of mit for the swap (Shadow Wall, The Blackest Night, Oblation, and Dark Mind). I just slowly bled out and neither of our healers really cared. We got the P5S kill on our last night of prog for the week, and in preparation for next week, I bought a WAR level skip to 80, leveled it to 90 that weekend, and switched to WAR for the following week’s P5S clear and P6S prog. I never wanted to be that beholden to a healer again, and WAR delivered for me. I had never played it before and we got the P6S kill that second week, followed by the P7S kill the week following. Unfortunately we disbanded after 3 weeks of P8S phase 1 prog because our healers basically refused to heal and we couldn’t do mechanics with the deaths we were having, even though we weren’t messing up mechanics that often, BUT Warrior was a super quick pick-up-and-go tank that I learned in one weekend, and is still my favorite tank to play when I don’t know how my healers are going to play. Definitely recommend the job to anyone who wants to start tanking or wants to be more self-reliant for content.

      DRK is probably the best tank for the current tier of savage with only really GNB being maybe better. Dark mind is amazing because almost every source of dmg in the current raids is magical dmg so you just have an extra rampart with a 1m CD, TBN can be used 2x on tank busters with a bleed to absorb the 1st hit and part of the bleed, and DRK does the most dmg of all the tanks because the meta centers around raid buffs and drk has the strongest burst.

    It's worth mentioning as a con for Warrior, it's not the greatest for progressing ultimate fights, both at race and midcore levels. Its mitigation is stellar for dealing with repeated small and medium hits, but if you get a sitation like TOP p6 where the tanks are taking a large number of extremely high damage hits, the other tanks are much better at dealing with those situations.

    The fact that people are comparing DPS between the tanks is a pretty telling metric that the tank class isn't being properly challenged in content for what it is supposed to be, a tank. In pretty much every other mmo the tanks are compared solely on survivability. FFXIV is the first one where I never hear anyone talking about that and only talk DPS.

    Seems like I am the only one who think WAR is difficult (WAR 80, PLD 90, DRK 90, didn't play GNB)
    To me, PLD and DRK is quite straightforward, press defensive to be more tanky, and when some special skills than 1-2-3 combo is ready, it is just pop orange.
    WAR, on the other hand, is hard to optimized Beast Gauge (I overcapped Beast Gauge as a WAR a lot more times than I overcapped Blood Gauge as a DRK, and PLD's Oath Gauge is for defensive skills)
    WAR is also time sensitive CD usage because it is more focusing on self-heal than reducing damage. I most of the time used it at the wrong timing ended up with overheal myself and had no CD left for the next mechanic. Or I use shake-it off without any buff on myself and getting its minimum effects.

    I love dark knight, it's my go-to tank but my only two real complaints are it's lack of sustain which is a general one, and the fact that they switched salted Earth to place on self instead of ground target. I had it Mack road to my target so it's centered it on whatever I was fighting. Now during large pulls I have to place it at my feet and then step back to maximize the amount of mobs that are in it

    • @VaSoapman
      @VaSoapman Год назад

      I used to be sad about the sustain, until organizing party mits. DRK has a LOT of mits.
      Essentially a DRK can easily hit 50%-60% Mit + TBN for a buster every minute. IIRC other tanks only get up to 30-40% with including the short CD.
      So DRK has great damage, amazing Mit, and a pretty good shield. But they have bad healing and no Max HP boosting.
      If DRKs could also heal up on top of that it'd be a bit too much.
      I do wish that you could toggle how Salted Earth worked. For me, I like how its one less button to hit in the opener.

Otherwise right now considering only high end gameplay, DRK seems to be the top pick by far. Even during DSR and now with TOP, DRK has the highest clear rates and the most picked job in any comp (and I mean the most picked job and not just most picked tank). While both WAR and DRK do benefit from downtime optimization and during reopeners, it's lowkey hilarious to see DRK outdamaging most dps during their burst (except for NIN and SAM probably).

    The fact warrior is the lifesteal tank and not dark knight is the stupidest thing ever. Warrior has never been a lifesteal job in any FF. It's always had super high base HP and defense, which i feel high mit and sheilds would better suit it (which it does have.) but Drk's entire shtick in other FF games is to burn hp to hit harder then steal it back. They can't really make it a tank if it burns its hp but they could definitely keep the lifesteal aspect. But nope. Warrior has decent mitigation, multiple shields, and lifesteal to an almost ludicrous degree. while dark knight is left with a pretty decent shield (that i feel has gotten outclassed by the other tanks short cooldown tank skills) and magic specific mit. Yes they have the highest damage, but so what. They can firmly give that title to gunbreaker if it means i can actually feel like I'm playing a dark knight and not just a guy with a big sword.

    Overall, to me Paladin 6.3 rework was a blessing. I was afraid, what it might be like, but now it's easier to maintain, and the even minute burst is easier to hit within party buffs than before (since PLD didn't have an actual burst previously). Still, it isn't dealing highest DPS out of all tanks, but in my book, with the easier to handle burst, it did receive a boost. But I disagree that PLD does the lowest DPS out of all tanks. I've seen that WAR does a little less than PLD. And yeah, its invuln is still with the longest cooldown, but it has no other drawbacks whatsoever. And overall, I think PLD's are now used more because of the rework. They were pretty scarce before.
    Here's my order for the best invulns: 1. Hallowed Ground (PLD), 2. Superbolide (GNB), 3. Living Dead (DRK), 4. Holmgang (WAR).
    Why Holmgang last? Well, it's effect, I think, is the worst. Holmgang only makes sure WAR's HP doesn't fall below 1 point as long as it's effect lasts.
    Living dead on 3rd place is imo, justified. Now that it has a self-healing added into it, it is better than Holmgang, but it can still cause KO if used wrong.
    Superbolide is 2nd best. While it reduces GNB's HP to 1 when activated, it provides the same invuln like PLD's Hallowed Ground: GNB doesn't take any damage while it is active. It is then up to healers to handle the rest.
    And I already told, why Hallowed Ground is the best.

    • @m8vg1x
      @m8vg1x Год назад

      holmgang's drawback isn't really a drawback what with Warrior's crazy self-healing. On top of that, having a short cooldown means you can use it more often and in a limited length fight, that can make or break some strats. For example: In an 8 min fight, more often than not, PLD's not going to be able to use their invuln twice. It was the case back in e12s where PLD would always have to be the 2nd invuln tank for the buster just because of the CD length while GNB just barely didn't make the cut and WAR and DRK could use their invuln twice. In fact, they could both invuln the 1st TB then WAR would invuln the next and DRK last. You really shouldn't underestimate the CD length and how much it affects the skill's usability.
      Heck, there's been jokes about Hallowed's CD since back in the day. (and the CD on hallowed's still not back up XD)

    I think DRK unfortunately has to be declared the winner with current tanks, even though I don't really like it's design. It's the top dog in high tier play because it's just the minmaxer's dream. Right now in the 92 clears of TOP on FFlogs only 6 groups don't have a DRK. The first clear to not have a DRK was after 25 teams had already cleared.
    When it comes to offense it's just too much better than other tanks at exploiting burst windows and dealing with downtime (because of continuous mp regen) that it naturally pulls further ahead in Ultimates full of those things, and it already had a lead on the other tanks in Savages. It can put way too much of its damage pretty much wherever it wants to in its rotation since so much is oGCDs.
    Defensively DRK is also the best tank unless you manage to find a fight with no magic damage. Dark Mind being on 60s is absolutely huge, and the way that shields become better with more %mit while other %mit stacks worse can actually be relevant with high enough incoming damage. Oblation is up for basically all the damage you want it to be if you use it right. Living Dead is on a 5 min cooldown but since the changes is probably stronger on a per use basis than Superbolide.
    Really the only even kind of weakness that DRK has is a lack of sustain, which quite honestly isn't a big deal when healers have so many oGCDs and your co-tank can probably give you something. Other than that the worst you can say is how it isn't literally the best at some niches that other tanks still have, like how it only has the second shortest Invuln or is not quite as good at handling high damage to both tanks as Warrior and PLD.
    It's my least favorite tank to play right now with the least inspired feeling design, but if you don't already have a DRK in your group you probably go DRK if you want to make the optimal choice.

    agree that WAR deserves the win. Other tanks have some issue here or there that is rather noticeable such as the GNB's no mercy not really being well optimised for fitting all of its burst window actions or DRK's defensive kit being strangely magic-biased, having a heal-check-tax on its invuln, TBN having a shield-break-check, etc, PLD had clunky aspects of kit like divine veil (albeit fixed in 6.3) or straight up useless stuff like Cover.
    The way WAR is designed now is fairly all-around solid and the only possible big flaw it may have is being under-tuned in damage for certain patches, which is easily fixed in a potency buff. it is the least clunky tank, and that can really go a long way to making a job enjoyable to play. WAR even has QoL fixes like infuriate no longer messing up inner release stacks, meanwhile 6.3 PLD still has stuff like atonement breaking your GCD combo

I mean, the *ONE* job that *ALL* of the first 20 teams to clear Omega Ultimate (including yours, obviously) had in common was DRK. While theoretically GNB has a higher DPS, in most fights and comps DRK outperforms it because of the 2 minute meta (going by fflogs here). You've given a "win" to each of the other three jobs before... but DRK doesn't get it even in an expansion when its *this* dominant? And it doesn't even come second on your list for its DPS, even though it's arguably the top DPS tank as well? I mean everyone's allowed to have their preference, and we can all agree to disagree, but... if you analyze jobs based on their performance, say all the jobs are viable, and then not give the "win" to the job that has by far the best performance, you're basically saying "yeah, this job will never be the best tank in my book unless none of the others are viable."

The high APM opener is great, but after that the job literally falls flat. It feels like im playing at level 50 with barely any abilities. LS is nothing more than a glorified DOT, Dark Arts is a pathetic mockery of what it once was, shadowbringer looking/feeling extremely underwhelming and looking nearly identical to Flood, and the gauge is the most uninspired mechanic ever... There was so much potential to make the class unique and different but it just feels generic and bland. It definitely looks like a Dark Knight but doesnt feel like one.
    Maybe its me, but i feel as time went on most jobs lost their identity to the devs trying to keep the game as balanced as possible. Its a big reason why I believe people loved the PVP changes so much. It was such a stark contrast in uniqueness between jobs (every job does its role and plays differently) and how class identity for each class returned.
