Managing Moisture In Your RV

- #rvmoisture #camperdehumidifier #rvmoisturecontrol Managing moisture in your RV is not a difficult process. We all get in a hurry wanting to head to our next destination, but if it's been raining and the sliders are wet, you could introduce unwanted moisture in you RV. This can lead to sour smells or worse, mold that could impact your health and damage your belongings.
We recently had to move our 5th wheel after two days of hard rain. The sliders were wet, but with about 15 to 20 minutes of prep time using a long handled squeegee and a large beach towel, we were able to head down the road to our next campground.
The preparation didn't end with drying the sliders. We take an extra step using either Dri-Z-Air or DampRid products for a day or so to make sure we've removed that extra bit of moisture floating around the inside of the RV. We've found this to be a less expensive option without the use of a noisy electric dehumidifier.
These are easy steps and great insurance that your RV stays dry, free from mold and smell, making your trip more enjoyable.

I use Damp Dry in the tub, Take the top off and set in the kitchen sink. As far as water on my side outs, I use an electric leaf blower, works grate!!!
Thanks for sharing tips Fred.
You have the best tips Jerry!! We’ve learned so much from you. Love your channel. Thanks Jerry 👍👍
Thanks much for the kind comment. We have some new RV help and tips videos coming very soon. Jerry...
Covering the scrubber side of the squeegee with (several) removable microfiber towel sleeves (Very easily made) will suck up anything left after using the squeegee, and they are easily removed and wrung out for reuse and/or washing.
Great tip!
Thanks for a great video. We've been RVing for about 15 years, but now we have our first rig with a slide and your video will help a lot come our fall trips - I usually learn something from your videos, even when dedicated to something I thought I knew.
One suggestion to deal with the DampRid moisture attraction is to put the DampRid/Dri-Z container in the sink. That way when the moisture settles around the container, it's in the sink and not going to wreck anything. One other thing, a cheaper alternative to the paper liner the baskets come with is store brand coffee filters (whatever is cheapest), the basket kind not the cone.
Thanks Andy. Those are great tips.
So funny - I watched a previous video where you have a squeegee as an essential. I was like ... why? Lol! I appreciate your lessons & your humor. Thanks for keeping it real. ~A.
You bet Angela. Glad I could share a smile.
Once again, an excellent video. My husband and I look forward to them.
Thanks much for the kind comments.
I agree Damp Rid does work well. Nice video.
Thanks much.
We are in the northwest. Lots of moisture in the air in the trailer, now stored in the driveway. Up to 70% humidity and just above freezing temperatures. I plug in the rv fireplace which lowers the humidity to around 50%. I have a small container of damp rid and it hasn’t sucked a drop of moisture out of the air. Now considering a small dehumidifier.
I used Damp Rid with ok results. Try Dri Z pot and crystals. Works great.
Towels are good..chamois are better. Although Damprid is a great product, especially when storing/winterizing. Damprid makes refiillable smaller tubs, the larger tubs to use/,refill the smaller tubs & hanging bags. The problem with Rv moisture isn't just humidity inside. It's also condensation on every window when the temperature outside gets colder than the windows temperature. It creates condensation on a large scale. This is also made worse when we are using propane furnaces, cooking, showering, doing dishes, sleeping and just breathing. The larger dehumidifier is a must have. More importantly are the areas that are closed like closets, we keep damprid in each closet. Open vent in bathroom, turn on fan when showering use exhuast fan above the stove (make sure it's open on the outside) when cooking. Using a vent insulator in the vent(s) really helps as well from heat & cold, just remove it when needing to use the fan.
Good tips. Thanks.
I use a small electric blower, works great on leaves & water.
Hi Sandra. Great tip. We have one as well. Used it all the time before the toppers were added.
“Saved.” Thank you 😊!
Always glad to share Marsha.
I Love RV Life I’ve been thinking 🤔 💭. Do you think Silica Gel would do the same or better job as Damprid..?
Hi Marsha. We haven’t used the gel. We also use the Dri-Z-Air-Pot amzn.to/2SwaGG2 and Dri-Z-Air Refill Crystals amzn.to/2BVZMDL with very good results. Very inexpensive option. We place one in the kitchen and another in the bedroom.
Thanks. Love your tips based on hands-on experience!
Appreciate the kind comment. So glad we can share a few of the RV travel tips that work for Joan and I. Jerry...
Great info Jerry. Thanks for sharing. Safe travels.
My pleasure and thanks.
moisture is a common problem, thanks for your helpful solution tips...
Hi Janet. So glad you found the tips useful.
Thanks for the video. Very helpful
Thanks much.
Great Ved str8 to the point that’s what I like
Thanks a bunch. Glad we could share.
Wow, thanks for the warning. I will never have a rig with sliders.
It’s manageable. Just a few extra step when we leave in the rain.
I wanted to mention a cheap and effective way someone could use to cover their slide outs it's just by a cheap small tarp from Lowe's and set it right over it because those slide out toppers can be $700 each
jUST BUY A DEHUMIDIFIER!! Mine works great! Simple and easy to use! All I have to do is empty it once a week!
Dry good option if you have power.
I used the white damp rid in my 5th wheel and it attracted ants to it. There must of been 1000 dead ants in it. I never had this happen before and Not even sure why. Then I found the RV brand with charcoal in it (didn’t know About the RV kind). Never had an issue again.
That's weird. Never had that happen. I also use Dri-Z-Air. It works great. Sometimes it can be a little less than the DampRid. Here's a link to the Pot shown in the video amzn.to/2GScyHD and I buy this 60 oz container that usually lasts a couple of season amzn.to/2SC564X. They may stay away from the Dri-Z-Air, it's a little salty. Jerry...
The dry z air ones are a mess. Damprid has their own containers that are better, the bags work good too. Air dryers and Eva drys are great too!
Thank you for the great video, any tips on damp proofing an RV that is stored over the winter at a all seasonal camp ground? We live in Nova Scotia Canada where the climate is well below freezing for days on end and then above the freezing point on other days. We do have 6 damp traps in our 32 foot triple slide, we are not sure how long these last for as we do not have access to the RV until May. This is our first RV and fist time doing this. We winterized the RV in mid October and set the damp traps up throughout the trailer then. Thanks, Craig,,
Craig, thanks for the kind comments. You're doing the right thing with the damp traps. It's hard to say how long they'll last. It depends on the amount of moisture. If you're using the large DrampRid buckets, you should make it through the season.
I Love RV Life , Thank you for the quick reply Jerry, we enjoy your videos, keep up the great work and happy RVing.
Hello. Where did you get the black damprid container from?
I don't think these are still made. They have a similar unit that is white. Just in case my link is blocked in the comments, check out the links I placed in this video description.
It is a Rainier Precision DZA-U Air Pot. looks like they are about $7 - $15 and available at walmart, amazon and more.
Thanks Jon. Glad you found them. Just $11 and change amzn.to/2SO7q9N
do those new windows work well to keep RV warm
Theses are single pane. Not much for thermal improvements. But, they do seal very tight and that’s a big benefit on cold, windy days.
What brand of slide toppers did you install?
Hi Darrell. The toppers are years old and I don’t have the invoice. Had a local RV dealer install.
👍
Thanks
Not only does a propane heater create moisture, it also can leave a slime on walls and windows. Not good, especially in a small area like an RV.
This has never been an issue. We have been in Kentucky and Tennessee for the past month and a half and it's been freezing. We used the Mr. Heater for a number of weeks from early morning till late evening. Small opening in one window in the living room and the vent opened in the bathroom was enough ventilation keeping the moisture down. Looking at the walls and windows, there's no issues. Maybe too The Mr. Heater as a catalytic is just very efficient burning propane and doesn't create as many problems.
get a dehumidifier! You will have a free water and dry air.
Thanks for the option.
