    This episode makes it clear that Aang, in his mind/timeframe, was playing pai sho with Gyatso a just few days before finding his mentor’s skeleton in the air temple… It’s a brutal reality check.

  • @Wuffskers
    @Wuffskers Год назад +315

    Something that makes Zuko's banishment even more cruel is that the Avatar hadn't been seen for 100 years, everyone pretty much assumes the avatar is gone yet Ozai still made that Zuko's condition for return, something that for all anyone knew would never happen. It was essentially a lifelong banishment just with a more cruel nearly impossible goal to dangle in front of Zuko knowing he would probably never get it. Imagine a 13 year old now, being painfully disfigured by his own father and being disowned and told to search the whole world for someone that hadn't been seen since 1923, Ozai is absolutely monstrous. Something that's also worth noting about Zuko's attitude toward the beginning is that he wasn't disregarding the lives of his men because he's selfish, he was trying to embody the kind of leader his nation and father approve of, trying to be like the ruthless general he spoke up to, but the end shows he's still that kid that spoke up in the war room, he does still care about his men even if that contradicts the "lesson" Ozai taught him.

    • @drfoto2673
      @drfoto2673 Год назад +33

      I absolutely think Zuko was, sort of, disregarding his men, but that was only when they weren't explicitly in any danger, and it was just risky. Don't forget that he also put himself in the same danger as he put his men through.

    All of ATLA is good, but the Storm is where it stepped up a notch. Much needed backstory from hero and villain side by side, and having them confront a similar scenario where they stick to their core and earn a small victory. It's one of the best written episodes of the whole show, and we get some great comedy from the old couple to lighten the intense mood.
    Fun fact: the way the Air Nomads proved Aang was the Avatar is the same way that they choose the Dalai Lama, they pick items of the past lives and the reincarnation will be drawn to the objects. Also inventing the 'Air Scooter' made Aang a master thus why he has the tattoos at such a young age, it's one of two requirements needed to achieve Airbending mastery.

    And we also get to see that in some ways, Aang and Zuko may have more in common than either may care to admit.

    There is a fan theory that because of the shape of Zuko's scar, it wasn't a fire blast. The theory says that Ozai just superheated the palm of him hand and then pressed it over Zuko's eye, which to me seems crueler than if it was a fire blast. Because that means Ozai didn’t just happen to hit Zuko in the eye. Scarring Zuko over the eye was deliberate. Airbenders didn't grow up in nuclear family units and actually had a sort of mating season. So there is also a fan theory that Gyatso is Aang's biological father and that's why they're so close. Also, Fire Lord Ozai is voiced by Mark Hamill. Boom at 21:30. hahaha

    This is easily one of the best ATLA episodes. You were very close about the toys - as one of the tests to find the Dalai Lama, monks will present the child they suspect to be the Dalai Lama with a group of artifacts, some of which belonged to the previous Dalai Lama. If he can correctly identify which objects belonged to the Dalai Lama, it is considered one of the signs that he is the next Dalai Lama. my theory about feeling a storm coming in your joints relates to the drop in barometric pressure that precedes the storm. Air pressure gets lower, but your body's internal pressure stays the same, so your joints expand a bit internally which increases friction between moving parts, and i think the elderly are more sensitive to it because they're more likely to have inflammatory joint diseases or worn/damaged joints

But the Avatar hadn’t been seen in ~100 years. Firelord after firelord have searched for the Avatar that whole time and all of them failed. Not to mention that, as far as the Fire Nation knew, the Avatar was a very old man who had ~100 years to master the elements: who did they send to capture him? A scarred boy. Zuko’s mission was never supposed to succeed. His dad never wanted him to return at all.

    The Avatar is always born the Avatar. It's a reincarnation thing, phrased as such in the show before, they're not ambiguous about it. They just need time to figure out who it is each generation, and it's often not so easy. Each nation is pretty huge. Fire Nation is composed of a lot of big islands. There are two whole Water Tribes and the Southern one used to be much bigger than this. The Earth Kingdom is probably the biggest of all, with many cities of all sizes. And the Air Nomads live throughout the world in 4 different temples. Each nation uses a different method to find the Avatar and they're not infallible. They once even got wrong the Avatar in a previous era and trained him for years before realizing the Avatar was another person.

    I haven't see it mentioned yet, but the scar on Zuko's face initially resembled a handprint before it healed to this extent. His father didn't fire blast him. He held his hand up to his face to burn him.

    This is probably my third favorite episode in book one. Aang and zukos backstory. Iroh being cool and redirecting lightning. Aang using waterbending outside of a waterbending themed episode. Monk gyatzo. Its just fantastic.

    To receive the airbending tattoos one must be declared a master, which means mastering the 36 levels of airbending. Aang only mastered 35 but his invention of the air scooter actually qualified him, making him the youngest airbending master in history. That’s why he’s the only airbender out of his friends that has the tattoos

    Y'all are right about the Fire Nation being Honor Bound.
    In the official TTRPG rule book, it states that the loser of an Agni Kai has to honor a verbal contract that is agreed upon by the combatants. The scar is the most brutal part, as it is supposed to be like a public brand and personal reminder of their promise.
    What's odd is that the ship's crew doesn't know what happened, given how public that Agni Kai was...

    It's more prevalent in older people to feel weather in their joints, but it's possible for younger people too. I knew someone in highschool that could accurately tell when the weather was gonna get worse at was appeared to be random. When I asked him about it, he said he could tell from how his knee joints hurt and the worse the pain, the worse the storm.
    I still talk to him today about the weather because he's more accurate than the news is lmao.

    This episode is goated.
    Great reaction as always nothing else to say about that without being corny, also the ice bubble Aang did back than and the air bubble Aang did in this episode has nothing to do with bending or the temperature. The ice bubble Aang did just to survive as Avatar state is mainly an defence mechanism, but Aang in this episode was drivin by his emotions that He will not let the world down again, so instead of just saving them from dieing He saved them and brought them back as Avatar state is all the past lives and the current life put together to implify his power and knowledge.
    Next episode is "Blue Spirit" which is also pretty good episode, I'm tuned

    I always had the headcanon that zukos crew was just random lower class fire nation citizen's...cause no way the fire nation would send actual soilders with a guy they never expect to come back when they could send randos instead...but that's just me.
    Edit: fire nation is prideful and arrogant, but they aren't dumb

      important , they have a traditional hierarchy society where nobles and commoners live different lives. Nobles were probably in attendance/ heard about it while commoners probably only heard rumors and that he was banished for opposing the fire lord. There was probably propaganda.

    10:00 it is a reincarnation thing. As soon as one avatar dies another is born into the next nation in the cycle. But the sages of each nation have to find the child and are raise due to the customs of their nation. For example Roku was told when he was a teen, Aang when he was 11 and Korra was around 8 years old

    This episode reminds me of how all of them are still kids. Aang had to carry the burden of being the Avatar in such a young age and Zuko was nearly the same age when he was banished. You can’t really blame them if you consider that they are still kids. Especially Zuko being branded and sent on an impossible Mission

    Since you guys like Sokka so much, I have a recommendation. Try reacting to LEGO Monkie Kid, the main character, MK, is voiced by Sokka's voice actor, Jack De Sena. And there are tons of awsome and hilarious moments. Such as in Season 3, where Monkey King, voiced by Sean Schemmel (you know, Son Goku), fights against a charected voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch (Ichigo Kurosaki).
