The thing with Zuko being exiled only being able to return when finding the Avatar is the Avatar wasn't seen/heard of in 100 years, so basically the Fire Lord sent Zuko on a mission that probably would never come home from. Also read this thing that its ironic that Ang's hero arc started with a slightly selfish decision whilst Zuko's villain arc started with him trying to be good.
I know right? It always struck me as kind of a "you can come home when pigs fly" kind of thing (except obviously that idiom wouldn't work in a world with winged pigs)
It's funny how Zuko only learns about Aang because he's a dumbass. The Fire Nation thought they had wiped out the Air Nomads, so the next Avatar would be a waterbender. However, 100 years passed with no sign of the Avatar, so it would be reasonable to assume the waterbending Avatar would've passed away, meaning the next Avatar would be an earthbender. However Zuko, the stubborn dumbass that he is, is still hellbent on finding the waterbending Avatar, and that leads him right to Aang
Zuko, crying, begging on his knees for speaking out. His dad: Burns him, banishes him and sends him on what should've been an impossible mission since the Avatar hadn't been seen in 97 years. VS Zuko, apologizing for making a bad decision, going against his uncle's advice putting everyone in danger. Uncle Iroh: Your apology is accepted. What a difference

Zuko mentions in Season 2 Episode 1 that it's been 3 years since he'd been banished. 100-3=97 so the Avatar hadn't been seen for 97 years when Ozai sent Zuko on the seemingly impossible mission.
ohhhh that's a great detail. Aang gives people hope, but sometimes its in ways he wouldn't have imagined. Without an Avatar to hunt, Zuko would be completely lost in the world, aimless, no clue who he was, where to go, or hope for the future. Aang is the only thing keeping his world from falling apart rn
I love the scene toward the end when Zuko says "Uncle... I'm sorry," and Iroh says "Your apology is accepted." That's such a stark contrast from Zuko's relationship with his father. Zuko apologized to Iroh for actually doing something wrong, and Iroh immediately accepted the apology without Zuko begging for forgiveness. But when Zuko showed a strong moral compass in front of his father, no amount of apologizing and begging and pleading could convince his father to show mercy. Just goes to show your real dad isn't always your bio father.
I always figured that Ozai was using the incident as an excuse to get rid of an heir with the wrong attitude. Too kind, too compassionate. In Ozai's eyes, too weak. Zuko has spent the series being hard, cruel and angry trying to overcompensate and be the son his father wanted. I'm really pleased Arianna picked up on that, too!

Yet his dad said "rise and fight." I think most of us would view Zuko's reaction as an attempt to show him respect, but in his culture (at least in the Firelord's view) Zuko SHOULD ruthlessly attack him with the intent to kill. If he had done that, then he would have shown bravery and honor, even if he killed his dad. He banished him because he was ashamed that his son refused to hurt him. The backstories and overall character arcs for this entire series are not only the best written ones for an animated series I have ever seen; they are the best for any TV series I've ever seen. Zuko's arc is especially outstanding.
And now the show REALLY gets good. And keeps getting better. In some ways this is a turning point both in our understanding of the characters, and, I think, in the confidence of the people who made the show.

One more thing you have to think about is the fact that their was no possible winning outcome of the fire duel between Zuko and Ozai. Zuko knew he spoke out of turn in the meeting, and knew when he did so, However, he believed it was important enough to speak, for the sake of the people of the Fire Nation, and he was ready to accept the consequences. Had it been an Agni Kai against the General, he would have battled with all his might, win or lose, and accepted. But because they where the Fire Lord and the Prince he could not fight without bringing disaster. 1 The first and most likely outcome would be that Ozai trounced him utterly, leaving him humiliated and shamed...a shame he would never recover from, meaning he could never be Fire Lord. When Ozai eventually dies, the throne would pass to Azula. 2 The second possibility would be if he performed well against Ozai, managing to push him back or even injure him. That would be interpreted one of two ways. The first is that Ozai went easy on him because he was his son, implying he didn't think he could hold his own and that would be the same result as if he'd bested him soundly. And if the people didn't believe that, then Ozai's image as the invincible Fire Lord would be shattered, since he were hard pressed by a 13 year old. The people's faith in him would waver, and the nation would become unstable. 3 And the third was that Zuko somehow won. The only politically sound result of that would be Ozai immediately passing the crown, as Zuko would have triumphed over him. And then the nation would collapse under a child ruler. From the moment Ozai became Zuko's opponent in the Agni Kai, there was no way he could fight without bringing disaster whether eventual or immediate to the Nation and the people he had been raised and taught to put first in his thoughts. So he did the only thing he could...nothing.
I guess on some level this whole "honor" based culture hinges on the idea that maintaining honor is more important than anything else, including the stability of their political order. You're supposed to just ignore the consequences and fearlessly do whatever the "honorable" action is without hesitation. I guess the "correct" thing for Zuko to do was to fight ruthlessly with the intent to kill his dad. If he lost, he would lose "with honor" and if he won then he would have showed everyone that he was strong and brought pride to the family or whatever. Idk if Ozai really cared about any of these cultural things tho. I think he's just mad with power and arrogant. Tbh Uncle Iroh seems more concerned with honor than any of these dudes (like in episode 2 when he stops Zuko from striking Zhou after choosing to spare him, saying "don't taint your victory," like it was very important that everyone watching knew that Zuko beat him fair and square for the sake of honor.
I feel Katara is underrated in this episode (just because of how amazing Aang and Zuko's backstories are), and I love Maple's appreciation for her. Sure, we're proud of Aang for forgiving himself and letting go of the past, but it's all thanks to Katara being so understanding and supportive right next to him. Best friend ever.
SpongeBob: Zuko’s father never hugged him, isn’t that sad? 😭 Mr. Krabs: yes, I suppose that is rather sad, but Zuko can hug himself during his break, now get back to work.
This show is fantastic, nothing about someone's sexuality or any storyline that alludes to that. It is brilliant for kids and adults, plus it looks fantastic and its genuinely funny. This show is a gem, even the legend of Korra comes close to how good this show is in every aspect. The legend of Korra isnt terrible, but it didn't get me glued to it.

Screw it I can't wait for the next episode. Lemme quickly binge the Patreon. Like I always say the show gets great at 1x8 but becomes LEGENDARY at 1x12 and 1x13.
This is such an amazing episode. Great reaction! And yes, you are supposed to feel bad for Zuko here, you are supposed to see how he went from happy go lucky to angry. I can't wait to get to Zuko Alone in this playlist! Next episode is also amazing, on my way there next lol.
Two of my favorite ladies 😊
Maple❤😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Hnnng
seen her OF yet? 🤤🤤
Oh hell yeah! Can’t wait to see you guys’s reaction!

*"icy"* 🥶
I feel Katara is underrated in this episode (just because of how amazing Aang and Zuko's backstories are), and I love Maple's appreciation for her. Sure, we're proud of Aang for forgiving himself and letting go of the past, but it's all thanks to Katara being so understanding and supportive right next to him. Best friend ever.
I've been looking for a new Airbender reaction for a while now 😍
I'm excited for when you guys get to where he's being trained in water and earth properly
I would definitely watch this with my kids 😂
Zuko's hair reflects that he is banished I believe
Glad to see new channels reacting to my favorite childhood shows ❤
SpongeBob: Zuko’s father never hugged him, isn’t that sad? 😭
Mr. Krabs: yes, I suppose that is rather sad, but Zuko can hug himself during his break, now get back to work.
One of the best episodes of the show
I second that. My kids will watch avatar, even if i have to force them. Iroh thaught us to be good people.
No cap, id marry both of you!
The Firelord is voiced by Mark Hamill
Four hours! Good thing its my day off. I'll just park this off on a spare monitor for a while.
9:31 You're gonna want to remember that girl's face.
i woke up to this and immediately grabbed my earpiece
12:28 That's a good excuse to rewatch the show. I use the slightest one I get to show it to someone though 🤣
People of ages should watch this show.
Want to find out something wild? The fire lord is played by Mark Hamil
Holy shit I never realized Iroh lightning bends in this episode
He redirects it.
I wish you kept in "I'm too young to die" and "I'm not but I still don't wanna"
Because of his father, zuko was never the same
So your 'digging' Earthbending, hmm?
But wait, it gets even better!
I have been waiting for the moment they realize zuko isn't just some giant asshole lol
I like to watch your reactions. Hope, you'll watch Avatar till the end!
I'm from Russia by the way))
oh we're going to. i can't wait for their reaction to the ending. it's so good. it'll be fun to see their reaction to the first episode vs the last
YESSSS Been waiting for this episode. ^^^see ya at the premier
This show is fantastic, nothing about someone's sexuality or any storyline that alludes to that. It is brilliant for kids and adults, plus it looks fantastic and its genuinely funny. This show is a gem, even the legend of Korra comes close to how good this show is in every aspect. The legend of Korra isnt terrible, but it didn't get me glued to it.
no spoilers but Zuko should be the go to example for a character arc done right.
earth bending would be my choice just so i could garden super easy
Ariana is sooo an eath bender I love it
