This brings back some fond memories for me. Not like I entered a rally, no, but I did own or drove some of these cars. The Falcon (red&white) were very popular in the states and were the platform for what would soon become the 1964 1/2 Mustang. Them V-8's had a sound all of their own. That Fairlane would get down sized too and could later be ordered with a small 260 bucket seats as a 2 door "sports coupe" Believe me when I say the 1960 full sized fords were the widest car, perhaps wider than most, but then the 1960 cars it was all about "BIG". This is one reason as a teen, growing up in the 60's I was burnt out by the time I turned 20 (1970) and started on owning VW, then SAAB. I had a Fiat once, a 850 Sport Coupe piece of rust but fun for a minute, but we won't talk about that lol. Now that I am an old fart I bought a used RX350, yeah I know... may be the last car I never own
Well yes the Fairlane name did get put on to the "midsize" car which later turned into the "Torino" but in 1961 a Fairlane was just a "Cheaper" Galaxie...which was the same Full Size Car... Though the Fairlane did not get the top shelf Galaxie "Thunderbird Super 390", as seems the "Thunderbird Special 352" was the top Fairlane engine at that time.
I love this stuff! i remember in the early 2000's watching a guy in a red camaro called Jocke Gasfot go full sideways in the dirt and snow 100% throttle all the time.
Awesome, not the kind of cars that come to mind when you think about rallying. They must be scaring of every animal within a mile sounding like they do.
This would be kind of like how NASCAR started back in the 40s and 50s. People taking their hot rod cars used for transporting illegal alcohol and racing them on dirt tracks. That's how people like Junior Johnson got started.
@@bonosimic532 If a rally driver chooses to drive something like a hopped up Datsun 510 or a Austin-Healey Sprite Mk. I, do you really think that makes him somehow "less than?" That is the most asinine logic I have seen on RUclips and that's saying something. As much as I like American classics, there's absolutely nothing wrong with light, tiny, and nimble foreign ones.
This is my kind of fun :) throwing around classic American cars on gravel. Me and my brother do it all the time. Our mom raised us on rally racing pretty much.
Few tidbits for you. The Mercury Comet, basically a Falcon, raced in the East African Rally of 1964. 18th and 21st place but only 21 cars of 94 finished. There was also 3 Comets that drove from Argentina to Alaska and the Triumph at Daytona where Comets drove 100,000 miles over 40 days.
That Starliner is something else. When you say Ford Rally Car, you think of an Escort, an RS200 or a Cosworth. Your mind does not go to a big 60's car designed for NASCAR. It's majestic! (Also, does anyone know the Starliners exact engine, because it sounds like an FE big block)
The engine in that was most likely a 352 probably swapped out though. I know that the 406 was the precursor to the 427 and was available in 62 and 63 but in 63 the 427 came along in the galaxies.
I owned a 64' Falcon Sprint in 1975, not a "classic" then. The 260 V-8 was strong and Oregon has lots of old logging roads, it was a gravel slinger for sure. Some of those roads were still in use. Youthful exuberance over thinking every time.
The Mustang (and Falcon) is considered a compact car. A 1967 Mustang has a wheelbase of 108" and weighs 3400 lbs. A 2019 Mustang has a wheelbase of 107" and weighs 3705 lbs. By comparison, a 2019 Toyota Camry has a wheelbase of 111" and weighs 3340 lbs.
Awesome. We used to pile into a mate’s v8 Fairlane and rally around the bush tracks around our town and try to do the Scandinavian flick. Bloody great fun.
That huge, white one is like entering the Kentucky Derby with a Clydesdale. But those cars sound AMAZING. Thank you VERY much for creating/posting this.
Loved both of the Ford V-8 videos! There are a few people commenting that the American Fords just aren't suited to rallying (and also that the pace seems slow). I would agree that the 1961 Starliner is better in a straight line (!) but in fairness it IS a full-sized 1961 American car (or the equivalent of 12 full-sized 1961 European cars!). The Falcons, on the other hand, were rally raced by Ford in 1963 and 1964. A famous (or infamous) Swedish driver named Bosse Ljungfeldt almost won the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally in a 1964 Falcon Sprint. Rally racing is a bit of an art form since you can be penalized for arriving too early at a checkpoint as well as for arriving too late. As much as I love to see that '61 Starliner roaring around the course, I have to admit I winced a bit. They're kind of rare. However, it's obvious that the owner is getting the maximum enjoyment out of it, and that's what counts! Thanks for posting these. :-)
