@Roger Dodger LA blocks have the distributor in the back and it stands upright. B and RB blocks have slanted distributors on the front passenger side of the block. Just behind the water pump. You can also see the plug wire going through the valve cover at 0:10 like said above and that is most definitely a 2 piece Hemi racing intake. The 75 and up models had more square bodies also. The 71-74 was the same bodies with different grills, bumpers and odds and ends. This one has the split nose grill with horizontal slots which was 73-74. 71-72's had either hideaway headlights or 68 Superbee looking split nose grills. 68-70? Same bodies also. 68's had round side markers, round tail lights and flat across grill. 69 switched to rectangle side markers, elongated tail lights and split nose grill. Pretty much identical was the 70 to the 69. And the Hemi motors was what was banned from nascar. They said fans was getting bored with them winning so much. (Nearly half the races, not to mention the other top spots.) It's why i won't watch it to this day. While a very well built 318, 340, 360 LA, may out run a Hemi, there is no other engine on the planet that can sound like one. The way the hemispherical heads and pistons combust is so much more effective, it just makes a sound you can't get with a regular flat top or domed piston with closed or open chambered heads. A little info for anyone interested.

Robert Kaighin no, it wouldn’t make that much of a difference. NASCAR was at it’s peak during the 80s and 90s (mostly through the 90s) and that was the beginning of the “silhouette” cars (FWD/4 doors, Lumina, Grand Prix, Taurus). Many people said that going from RWD/2door cars would ruin NASCAR forever, but it didn’t. Some of the best racing ever was during those years. What has killed NASCAR is their inconsistency in fines against drivers, the change in points system (the Chase), over expanding it’s territory (too many tracks in big Northern cities),the lack of interesting drivers, letting Toyota in, and their recent “get woke” mentally. NASCAR was about its roots in the South, with the moonshiners, with many all of the early drivers having spent time running shine. Those that came later, cut their teeth on small dirt tracks scattered around the south. Now NASCAR is full of drivers that began racing go carts at 8 or 9 and never had to worry about having enough money because their mommies and daddies paid for it all. NASCAR used to be full of real men racing, now it is just boys. And with the way NASCAR is going, it will soon be soy boys.

love the body lines on that year well all of the years that it was made that way of course all of them up until the Lee iea Colca years until they stopped making the real ones.

Yes, they have full torque at 1 RPM; yes, they are more efficient; yes, less pollution (..to be proved); yes we all seen Model S' beating almost any V8 on the 1/4 mile...Yes: "progress".. ...but what about chills on the spine when you listen a revving V8? What about that fury song from the exhaust? And please: no one dares to say "..from audio system" I'll accept a "greener" world (...assuming lithium batteries production will be really "green").. But i'll never get used to a world without V8s.
and it can also turn left. I went to my first NASCAR race when I was 10, in 1976, And this sound is the sound I remember. Just add 30 more cars to the field. SO COOL to see this at Spa.
That sound is no where near how loud these cars are when they are in front of you. I had a brother in law God rest his soul who raced and he parked it in our parent-in-laws driveway. Every Christmas morning he would fire it up. I miss you Joe.
To bad the Dodge went out on the second lap of the race. Broke an oil line and they lost the engine. The 427 Torino went out in the11th hour, almost made it half way through the24 hours.
A slightly toned-down, modernized, street legal version of this with a few luxuries is seriously my ultimate dream car. Pagani would be cool but like, old Charger with modern frame and suspension, nice sound system, heated seats. You get tons of interior space, tons of trunk space. As tight of a ride as you're ever gonna really need if you're just driving around. And a V8 from the most aesthetic era of V8s ever to pass. That's just insanely cool.
Yes it is. That’s how NASCAR was back in the day. Take a bone stock car and turn it into a fire breathing monster. Today’s NASCARs are just glorified go-karts on steroids.
f1 is about the most sophisticated technologies and how to be quicker and quicker, not funnier to watch. yes, stick shift is cool and i love it but there is no good reason for f1 to use it, they develop hi tech stuff that will be later used on road cars (mostly)
They would if they could. It’s a safety issue. This car is one solid piece of metal. Not very good a dissipating energy like the modern cars of in a heavy crash.
If the car blew two engines would it t be the mechanics problem not the car the car is this a car it's the people that built the engine is what makes the car bad right
It's a gear reduction starter. You only thought it cranked and cranked and cranked when in reality the engine started within 3/4 of the first revolution. Oh, well would you believe they were priming the oiling system?
@@666puggsy Well Mr./Ms. Nunyabiz, I strongly disagree. Chrysler was the first to engineer a reduction gear into its starters (hence the unique, undeniable sound) which gave the eclectic motor a more efficient mechanical advantage and enabled the use of a smaller electric motor (more under hood space, cooler running, less expensive, less weight, less energy/amperage to operate resulting in longer starter and battery life). In addition, it was Chrysler who first introduced/pioneered the use of the more efficient alternator (and electronic ignition...but that's another story). Both these innovations (reduction gear starters, alternator systems) are now the universal industry standard. I lived "back in the day" (late 60's and 1970's) and changed my fair share of starters most of which were those enormous Ford direct drive starters (and solenoids...for some reason, they tend to burn them more frequently than GM's and Chryslers) which cost more, weighted considerably more, and burned up way more frequently. The GM's faired better but no where as well as the Chryslers. Chalk it up once again to Chrysler's superior engineering.
Now THAT's a cold start! Back in the days when NASCAR was good, or at least the cars were. Back when you could still tell the difference between brands and models.
@Ground Control My 68 Plymouth roadrunner was made on the same chassis platform as this Charger, the platform was referred to as Chrysler's "b-body" and it handles better than most new cars. It weighs less than most new cars too, my Roadrunner weighed 3350 stock which is just a wee bit less than 90's Supra or Corvette. I'm sure this Charger with it's wide slicks, chassis stiffening and suspension improvements drives like a dream.
@Stu West You said it "didn't handle great compared todays technology", frankly that's not true. I've been daily driving a 68 Roadrunner for almost nine years now and I have several other muscle era cars and trucks so I know what I'm talking about. I've watched a guy behind me in a BMW slide off the road and smash his wheels and bumper cover on a curb trying to get off the highway as fast as I did. Good tires are far more important than vehicle age when it comes to handling abilities.
@Stu West You don't daily drive a classic muscle car either so you really should "stop". And just listing a bunch of car parts doesn't mean squat, rack and pinion steering and independent suspension were big in the 70's so that's hardly evidence for anything modern. And what kind of idiot thinks a sequential gearbox has ANY sort of affect on vehicle handling? Anti-lock brakes and traction control systems are just a crutch for drivers with no pedal control. You definitely never built a race car, much less raced one. I can smell your bullshit from a mile away . . . .
Ah the infamous Hershal Mcgriff charger. Back in those fantastic days Olympia beer sponsored the legendary racing farmer from Caruthers, ca Ray Elder plus Hersl Mcgriff.

Deny_com uhm, not quite. Turn 3, the left entry is called Eau Rouge, the right left that follows is Raidillon. So just get that right. However if you know the term mondegreen you will understand that referring to the collection of corners 3, 4 and 5 at Spa as Eau Rouge is perfectly acceptable 🤦♂️
Christo du Plessis oh, you don’t get the joke. Sorry 🤷🏻♂️
Deny_com its okay, yeah I missed the joke (still not exactly sure), but no problems, sorry, I could have been nicer. Caught me at a bad time 🙈
Formula 1 is just high pitched V12 engines, but NASCAR, DAMN LISTEN TO THOSE LIONS ROAR!!
I just come back to this video from time to time to have my soul recharged with the sound of American Thunder. 💚
Olympia Brewing Company of Tumwater, WA. We did tours there as a kid, mom and dad got beer, we got coke and a coloring book. :)
GO MOPAR
Just mind-blowing seeing that big ol' dump truck roaring around Spa.
I believe that sound of the startup is what you hear as you enter the gates of Heaven. The beautiful symphony
Damn... that brings back memories. When I was a kid in high school I had a 71 charger. I slaved on it for over a year in the garage doing the bodywork, I put a Dana 60 under it with a 440 and a four-speed. 71 was a beautiful body style, it just wasn’t that popular compared to the 67 -69.
...but was it popular with you? I’m assuming you loved it. Where is it now?
@@normturner4849: I got it running I sold it to a local mopar guy who later sold it to a guy in Canada.

Holy shit, this is what nascar cars used to be. Like souped up stock cars? Tats awesome. I'm British and my only references to nascar are talladega nights, days of thunder and the occasional random youtube video in my recommended so I never realised they were like this back in the day.
Soundgasm.... wonderful!!!
Hearing a HEMI screaming down a road course is criminally rare on RUclips.
Love the old school nascar style ten times as much as these newer crap nascars
None of the V8s I have heard sound like that today. This one sounds absolutely monsterous!!!
I actually watch NASCAR if they actually raced “stock” cars.
No you wouldn't.
Yeah, I would. It would be much more interesting to see what manufactures could do when restricted by the parts they chose for a road car.
What you want is called SCCA or IMSA...... if you want actual cars, not a generic box store.
Looks like somebody is trying to get another copycat top comment, dude pretty much said this two years ago followed by a chick the next year

I’ve been saying(thinking) it for years lol
Nothing in the universe is as heart warming as a bellowing V8
Gosh damn. That chrome bumper 😍😍😍
Imagine if Nascar was still like this... Production cars tuned up as far as they will go.
That thing turns like it's its job. I've never seen a muscle car do that before.
That is it's job tho
@@lukeperrine5078 not for a muscle car really
Look at the old races from riverside raceway it was the greatest nascar road course ever. It had right and left turns
Wow - soundtrack from car heaven. Takes me way back trackside at Bathurst here in Oz with the V8s charging around the mountain. The new V8 supercars sound great but nothing IMHO compared with the sound of muscle back 'in the day'. Thanks for sharing and cheers from Sydney - Dave
i like the part where it went vroooom
Me too
Vrooom? More like GGGGRRRRRRRAAAAA

Every now and then I come across this video. It never gets old!

love the body lines on that year well all of the years that it was made that way of course all of them up until the Lee iea Colca years until they stopped making the real ones.
Fuck me, that was absolutely glorious.
My first car was a '73 Charger with a 400 4bbl and my purchase was inspired by the KING! Loved that car for it's looks and performance! That body style was the best looking car on the circuit at that time! Wish I still had it...
I'm not into NASCAR, but that thing does sound verrrrrry pissed off!!!
What a magnificant soynd! Absolutely love it! Great job on the audio for this video.
6 people are angry because they have dmaged speakers.
LOL, Good thing I only spent $14 on mine XD
No 6 people are angry because they like electric cars
Looks and sounds better than most cars today.
Gorgeous engine sound.
This car is so sick
Yes, they have full torque at 1 RPM; yes, they are more efficient; yes, less pollution (..to be proved); yes we all seen Model S' beating almost any V8 on the 1/4 mile...Yes: "progress"..
...but what about chills on the spine when you listen a revving V8? What about that fury song from the exhaust? And please: no one dares to say "..from audio system"
I'll accept a "greener" world (...assuming lithium batteries production will be really "green")..
But i'll never get used to a world without V8s.
Well said, brother/sister.
Better get used to a new world.
and it can also turn left. I went to my first NASCAR race when I was 10, in 1976, And this sound is the sound I remember. Just add 30 more cars to the field. SO COOL to see this at Spa.
1:14 jesus
We need a NASCAR CLASSIC series, how amazing would that be!!
I cant imagine future of nascar seriers without this sound when petrol era goes to end... greting from Poland
What a beaut!
There is no replacement for displacement !!
Racing in its greatest , rawest form.
These were big cars
That sound is no where near how loud these cars are when they are in front of you. I had a brother in law God rest his soul who raced and he parked it in our parent-in-laws driveway. Every Christmas morning he would fire it up. I miss you Joe.
Oh, I bet it is super loud in person.
Car sounds amazing you really get some good car on this Chanel I sub

For racing yes. For getting groceries with a shitty little dog, not so much lol
The Stance on this car is insande
Besides safety, i do believe these were for the most part, a production car.
Yes it is. That’s how NASCAR was back in the day. Take a bone stock car and turn it into a fire breathing monster. Today’s NASCARs are just glorified go-karts on steroids.
@@myth0l0gical49 ...i heard they took a racecar and made a streetcar!?? Hmm??
Not really. The outer body but that's about it there are some pretty good videos you can look at that really show the cars type in Dave Marcis Daytona

Those are not hemi cars
Wedge and max wedge engines
@@croomsracingengines9265 dude, it has a fucking hemi in it. go back and watch.
The old charger is still kicking it damn good.
Nascar needs you use regular everyday cars again like F1 needs to go back to a real shifter.
f1 is about the most sophisticated technologies and how to be quicker and quicker, not funnier to watch. yes, stick shift is cool and i love it but there is no good reason for f1 to use it, they develop hi tech stuff that will be later used on road cars (mostly)
They would if they could. It’s a safety issue. This car is one solid piece of metal. Not very good a dissipating energy like the modern cars of in a heavy crash.
These little wimpy cars of today probably won't even make it around the track twice blow a engine
@@kris4408 Ignoring that this car only did 3 laps or so of LeMans before blowing it's 2nd engine.
If the car blew two engines would it t be the mechanics problem not the car the car is this a car it's the people that built the engine is what makes the car bad right
Old dodge charger looks awesome even today.
Oh the unique sound of a dodge trying and trying and trying to start.
Mr. Monte Carlo
You are obviously ignorant of the nature of a cold, high compression, carbureted gasoline engine.
It's a gear reduction starter. You only thought it cranked and cranked and cranked when in reality the engine started within 3/4 of the first revolution. Oh, well would you believe they were priming the oiling system?
No choke on the carb(s).
@@stillbill6408 he might be ignorant of that fact butttttttt thats about how most older dodges start always had crap starters on big v8s
Memories, when these cars used body parts that actually came from the factory.
LOUD and PROUD MOPAR or NO CAR
Mopar pirate I choose Cadillac over Mopar for style and ride quailty but not performance. Pretty self explainable though.

Now THAT's a cold start! Back in the days when NASCAR was good, or at least the cars were. Back when you could still tell the difference between brands and models.
That thing probably handles like shit, but god it's beautiful
@Ground Control My 68 Plymouth roadrunner was made on the same chassis platform as this Charger, the platform was referred to as Chrysler's "b-body" and it handles better than most new cars. It weighs less than most new cars too, my Roadrunner weighed 3350 stock which is just a wee bit less than 90's Supra or Corvette. I'm sure this Charger with it's wide slicks, chassis stiffening and suspension improvements drives like a dream.
@Stu West It handled just fine in stock form, you ever actually driven a 60's-70's car before? See my previous comment above yours.
I can smell your bullshit from a mile away . . . .
@@Impactjunky Wish i could say "i daily drive a classic" too. I envy your luck.
