    It is scary how these big perfume companies actually affect the world both in the economic way or pop culture moment, certain fragrances are 100 % cheap synthetics but priced relatively high and yet people still buy it, but hey it’s your money so spend it wisely these brands did nothing wrong they’re just there to provide options so choose wisely … great video btw 👍

    • @EggWafflehea
      @EggWafflehea 3 года назад +2

      That's vague, can you tell it is really synthetics or it's a good quality synthetic because there are low quality fragrances that smell synthetic in a bad way. How exactly do perfume companies affect the world, if a non-fraghead cannot tell a fragrance is synthetic or not then sure those companies would be what they are now.

    • @benedictw2050
      @benedictw2050 3 года назад +1

      @@EggWafflehea well most companies that makes mass marketed fragrance required to use synthetics if they would use true natural ingridient not only that it would be less sustainable for the environment but also be very costly, most of these designer fragrances are actually more synthetics, and some of them are cheaper made by the hundreds and so that is why these companies that are selling mass marketed fragrances usually would use cheaper ingridient but higher prices in order to pay for the allure of it ( advertising, campaign etc). As for the pop culture reference, simple a certain fragrance mark a certain period of time that’s why certain fragrance tends to remind them about the 70s, 80s, 90s … pop culture also are affected by the likes of chanel no 5 as it is seen by many as a cultural moment photographed by marilyn, sought after by many, painted by warhol, printed as a room decor, used as an inspiration. Celebrity perfume also affect how the world works remember when every single celeb would put out a fragrance ?britney spears’s fantasy to this day is one of the most succesfull fragrance and also it is the one that tends to link allot of people with a certain period of their life’s … angel, eternity, and so much more and lately baccarat rouge or for the male maybe aventus it might not the pop culture right away but it sneak in silently affecting people and their taste in fragrance as time goes on taste in fragrance changes and so does it affect the world certain ingridient become more favorable certain note become more prevalent or outdated … when certain ingridient are becoming more popular it becomes more sought after therefor it is planted, harvested, or synthetically mass produced … more demand more money, i.e. ambergris …

    • @blacklite911
      @blacklite911 3 года назад

      @@benedictw2050 yea there’s a big misconception on synthetics. For example, some naturals are highly volatile or highly allergenic or unsustainable to harvest. Like right now there’s actually a natural vanilla shortage because it’s used in everything from fragrance to food and over harvested. Synthetics are usually made to be more stable and less allergenic. But also the line between synthetics is kinda blurred because synthetics are derived from naturals but put through some kind of chemical process. For example clear wood comes from patchouli but stripped down but it doesn’t smell “synthetic”. So it really takes more research to determine what’s “good quality” because the skill in how the perfumer blends naturals and synthetics and which synthetics they use can play a major role.

    9:35 that is an option but not completely necessary, as a perfumer I can say that when a mistake like that is done in a batch of oils, they can add more of the other ingredients in the formula according to the percentages given originally and the problem is fixed

    I would imagine a 5-20,000 dollar gas chromotography/mass spectroscopy machines off of ebay or a research/university looking to upgrade are the quickest way to reverse engineer any group of chemicals you desire especially since money is involved and these greedy companies are about regurgitating blue oud and sweet scents these days. I would not leave it to a nose. Alexandria/Dua etc..probably do it that way. An industrious undergrad in chemistry could do it.

    I have a perfumer question. Quick example to explain it better:
    I remember a situation where an artist created a bridge, but when it was finished the surface was too slippery. The museum who the bridge was made for wanted to change the surface, but the artist would not allow it. They came to an agreement in the end and the surface was changed with the artists approval.
    When a perfumer creates a fragrance. Do they do the reformulation as well? Their names are forever attached to the fragrance so I assume if a fragrance is changed to reduce costs, this might make the fragrance worse and I can imagine a perfumer would not be happy about that.

    • @SchoolOfScent
      @SchoolOfScent  3 года назад +1

      Perfumers are usually attached to fragrance houses like Firmenich, I imagine they would struggle to say no to brands like YSL, plus it probably means more business for them having to provide a new formulation

    Talking about production cost is so unfair. It's a bit like the cost to print a masterpiece like War & Peace. Printing is cheap but the intellectual worth of the book is the real asset. We shouldn't overlook the effort and trial and error that goes into creating fragrances. I'm not sure what the actual number is, but I bet for every fragrance that makes it to the market, there are hundreds that don't make the final cut.
    We should stop poo-pooing big brands, saying that they make insane profits from selling fragrances. Understand that it is a competitive marketplace and good old economics will ultimately ensure that the prices are fair.

    Very nice video as usual I'm gonna comment on 3 questions in this video ..the brother who asked about increasing the sense of smell,very great question,I always sleep with fragrance oils or attars around me bcs I always train my nose by smelling something then moving it a tiny bit far and continue doing that always you'll never stop and you'll actually start smelling things from very far,also try to smell as many scents as possible but before that try to put your nose on single notes single raw materials then when you smell a lot of perfumes especially when there's shared notes between this and that,you'll start remembering what that single note smelled like,there's a lot of exercises but start with these..
    About clone companies actually now there's machines that can give you the formula of any scent,that's why perfumers that use real oud real ambergris real deer musk real sandalwood,it's hard if not impossible to clone their perfumes just as areej le dore bortnikoff ensar oud agar aura etc....
    And a bout reformulation and discontinuation is a must this is art you can't have a perfume on shelfs for 20 years bcs real ingredients are never the same from batch to batch it's impossible even the same tree don't give you the same thing from year to year so how a fragrance is the same for years and years,so no need for reformulation like creed does I think the best thing to do is always to come up with small quantities that makes the perfumer motivated to come up with different creations even if some of them smell like some of his previous creations but he can name them differently,just my personal thoughts.
