Portland doesnt have skycrapers but i would argue it actually has quite an impressive skyline for such a small city. The downtown is situated on a hill and the highway that brings you by it is basically at sea level making 10 story buildings look like 20 story buildings. They may not have a lot of big buildings but i’d argue they actually have one of the most beautiful skylines in new england. It still has an impressive feel when driving by with the city above you yet it didnt have to build the big modern looking sky scrapers to achieve it which allows them to maintain some of there new england charm in my opinion. You gotta remember its a city of only 60,000. Most places that size dont even have an actual city center nvm a skyline. I for one prefer the portland style of a skyline. What it lacks in building height it makes up for in beautiful architecture/historical significance… and the fact that its on a hill lol. If you haven’t actually physically visited portland i highly suggest making the trip before knocking the skyline i think if u came here you’d agree that its actually one of the more beautiful skylines in new england. Boston and providence both have beautiful skylines imo but outside of those two cities i really cant think of a place in new england with a better skyline than portland. Its not what u typically think of when picturing a skyline but in my mind its even better than most typical skylines you would see in the US.

Thanks for the long comment! I actually visited Portland this summer and I loved it. I personally love tall buildings, but I thought I mentioned in the video that although it doesn’t have tall buildings the city has a nice look to it. I hope to visit your beautiful city again in the future 😊

@@CityGeek no problem im actually not from portland tho i just really like it there. I do like big buildings tho i just think in portlands case they’re better off with out the typical city skyline. Theres not much room for skyscrapers without having to tear down the historic buildings that are already there.

The developers are RUINING our once beautiful skyline.
They're also BLOCKING the once beautiful walking views that folks once had in the Old Port. The same idiots that promote The OLD PORT TOURISM INDUSTRY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR VOTING IN THE ZONING CHANGES THAT ALLOWED THE NOW UNDER CONSTRUCTION SKYSCRAPERS. GO BACK FROM WHENCE YOU CAME.

New England has nice small cities. The small cities in the south and Midwest are usually depressing and lame which in some ways can have a bizarre unintentional charm.

Been living here since 1996 and I love it. Portland is a very livable city with excellent public transportation, lots of jobs in service, medical and technology. We have a thriving arts community, tons of bars and restaurants and many performance venues. Pretty much every performer who plays Boston comes here as well. Two drawbacks are lack of rental apartments and the long winter. Rent on a two bedroom will set you back $1,600-$1,800 in town but starting pay at gas stations, fast food etc is $16-18 dollars an hours and everyone is hiring. We’re a 5 hour bus ride from NYC and an hour and half to Boston. Get here fast though. We’ve been discovered and New Yorkers are definitely buying houses and renting here !!

Great, hard working, humble, and honest people! I live in Texas now, and like it, but really do miss a lot about this State! Go back to visit my Mom, who is 88 years old, lost my Dad in 2009, at age 80, miss him a lot! My Texan Wife loves it there, and New England itself, we go back in October for the cool crisp fall foliage, great seafood, beautiful coast, and Portland was named best food city in America a few years ago! Everyone I talk to, who has been there loves it, wants to go back, and others want to visit there!

Not really, cities I've lived in that suck, like Reno, Phoenix are becoming just as expensive. Everywhere is expensive. At least the minimum wage makes up for it, and lots of jobs here. Most jobs I've had pay more than minimum wage. Places like Reno want 1500 for a studio, and you're lucky to make 13 an hour 😂. I've lived in Alaska where avg job paid $9 an hour and cost of living was way more expensive

It's expensive for Maine, did you realize Portland has no middle class? Most of Maine is a "rural ghetto", our biggest export isn't lobster, it's our children who leave because they can't afford to stay here.@@GabrielGarcia-300
