I live in Lewiston, second largest city... I like how I can travel between 3 to 5 miles in any direction and have hiking trails, fishing, canoe and boat rentals and other entertainment. Between 20- 45 miles concerts, professional sports and shopping malls. And of course the ocean front towns ... gorgeous post card beauty. Been here my whole life, Im 56 ... love it!
Yup, once you get even a little bit outside of town, its very rural and its just great. its a introverts dream and bonus points if your one of those outdoor type people too
Amazing video, A friend of mine referred me to a financial adviser sometime ago and we got talking about investment and money. I started investing with $120k and in the first 2 months , my portfolio was reading $274,800. Crazy right!, I decided to reinvest my profit and gets more interesting. For over a year we have been working together making consistent profit just bought my second home 2 weeks ago and care for my family...
I’ve been forced to find additional sources of income as I got retrenched. I barely have time to continue trading and watch my investments since I had my second daughter. Do you think I should take a break for a while from the market and focus on other things or return whenever I have free time or is it a continuous process? Thanks.
@@zubairadamu2477 Quitting may not be the best approach if you ask me. This is where an AI comes into the picture. I barely have time to trade myself as my job swallows up most of my time. *MARGARET MOLLI ALVEY* , a licensed fiduciary whom has made me over 5 figures in profit in less than seven months, handles my investments. I could leave you a lead if you need help.
Honestly, I've lived in Maine my whole life and I'm just so depressed and lonely here because everyone is just so introverted in the pandemic has made everything worse. There's no life here at all and to pay these expensive prices and get virtually nothing out of life is nonsensical. I'm trying to get a job overseas. I just want friends so badly. I'm 29 and let me tell you there's a very good reason why young people do not want to stay here.
So sick of the complaining about 'lack of diversity'. Who cares? That isn't a bullet point with a lot of people. Take Maine for what it is. A beautiful, peaceful area.
I can’t agree more. That is a huge plus to me. I am sick of my car getting broke into by diversity. I just want to be around respectful and decent people.
@@Jeffopar well considering that there is no diversity as you confirmed, wouldn’t that mean your break ins are likely from your fellow comrades? Your statement kinda contradicts itself lol and it appears your white buddies are actually breaking into your car.
We have owned our home at OOB for 18 years and spend our vacation time in Aroostook County because of the overcrowding we have here. We look forward to fall and winter. The biggest complaint from locals is that the away people have expectations that everything will be the same as where they are from and can result in a lot of disrespect to those of us that call Maine our home. Rental properties are on the rise and many our neighborhoods have changed forever. My advice to those who move to Maine is leave the expectations you currently have behind and expect resistance to change because we like it how it is.
@@antoniomontano9236haha. i moved to oob when i was 11. which means 30ish years ago. from houlton. yeah it has changed ALOT. in both areas. the county for the worse and oob. depends on how you look at it. if you are a yuppie. better. if you grew up in the old oob. waaayyyyyy worse. sooooo. my humble opinion i guess. 😊
i moved here a few years ago, love it, i really pushed to move here and i made it happen. People in my other state said i would never be able to do it! i proved them wrong! nicest people too.
I’m in las Vegas it’s 122 here now. 110 on average. Dry as a bone. People here are awful. It’s dirty. Crime galore. Don’t complain. It looks beautiful there.
I currently live in coastal oregon and im used to very high living costs. Im moving to maine next year and lived there before so im ok with the winters and low population. Im an outdoors kind of guy and have lived in Fairbanks Alaska for two years, so i live for the snow. Looking forward to the change
As a Chicagoan I disagree with the mean comment. I was pleasantly surprised to see that as a whole New Englanders were much nicer to us than our own midwesterners. I was expecting them to be gruff mountain folk, but they ended up being incredibly sweet, friendly and helpful.
Appreciate the video. My family is currently relocating to the Portland area because of work. I have been trying to get a realistic view of what life is going to be like since I am coming from the south and have never experienced a true winter.
I lived in Maine from 2015-2024 (just left). It has changed so much. The real estate prices are out. of. control. I sold my little 900 square foot condo for almost triple what I paid for it nine years ago. It’s so unbelievably crowded. Portland is a homeless cesspool now. Took all my money and left.
As a Mainer, we are sick of out of state people buying up all the real estate, most people who live here cant even afford to own a home and all the apartments are used for air bnb. It is a real problem for young people trying to get started in life.
Hegefunds (black rock) and foreign nationals are buying everything everywhere! The 50 states need better regulations, laws and agency to combat this. Write and influence your community to write to your congressman. Do not be a bystander no one will do it for you.
As a Mainer I was curious to hear your reasons for not moving here. I was born here. I agree with your list lol. I have heard the "mean" thing before. I don't understand it LOL. I guess maybe because like you said, we aren't that southern hospitality type however, at least in the area I live (more rural, teeny tiny town without even a gas station or post office) folks would literally give you the shirt off their back, give you a ride somewhere if you needed it, help you get gas, change a tire, pull your car out of the ditch etc. without expecting anything in return. I love this state. Thank you for the video, I enjoyed it.
Hi Margaret ,well I've never been to Maine but I tell my lady I would move there tomorrow,I'm almost 60 and she's a bit younger than me but I love the slower way of life whether it be north or south Maine .I'm in the East Coast of Canada ,Cape Breton ,nova scotia ,love your videos
Thank you! My husband an I may have to relocate to Main because of his job.... Thank you so much for this information! :) Relocating to another state is not always fun.
I'm moving from Texas, so it's gonna be different. We don't have ticks but we do have a lot of snakes, spiders, pollen, and mosquitos. I'm gonna make the most of it though, I want to learn how to snowboard and surf, and I love being outside. I'm happy that I get to live next to the ocean.
Very good discription for the most part. Since covid it seems like the population has doubled, Maine also has a serious drug epidemic as of late, and southern Maine does have a huge diversity of people a lot come for or should say invited for the wellfare bennifits. Maine is not the same state I grew up knowing. In northern Maine all the old timberland owners sold out to big multinational companies that only care about the bottom line and have stripped the forest bare. Should I continue?
Not many getting welfare benefits in Southern Maine-with all the almost million dollar homes for sale, you will be hard pressed in this part of York Country to find poverty, let alone the middle class. Also, not true about getting beeped at is not true-people drive pretty fast around here and they will definitely blow their horns when you are stopped at a stop sign, no joke.
Hi, I love your video. I actually live in Maryland, but I love to live further north especially in a state to slower pace I thought about upstate New York. I thought about Vermont Michigan, Wisconsin, and Maine and Maine sounding pretty good and by the way I have family in North Carolina, sure they’re nice people down there but people down there aren’t as nice as people may think lol.
Man escaped Bucks Harbor prison some years ago in the heat of blackfly season. He ran deep into the marsh and got stuck out there all night being chewed alive. The next morning he surrendered himself and took the extra time.
I live in Maine. Yes there is mosquitoes but there’s usually near towns. You can also get your landsprayed so you can’t get any bugs I have a next-door neighbor who sprayed her lawn and she has no mosquitoes or bugs. But we do because we haven’t sprayed so if your bother is mosquitoes you could get it sprayed or find a place that’s less likely to get them but there is blackflies in the Mosquitoes.
@@martinamitchell7612 You'd be an instant billionaire if you invented something to keep the mayflies blackflies or whatever you like to call them. I get my property sprayed for skeeters and ticks but they have nothing for the mayflies.
@@lynnsbomb I do not spray my property for a few reasons: I enjoy the fireflies in late May & June, I have a decent size vegetable garden that I do not wish to be exposed to pesticides & I have dogs that love to roll in the grass. My property is mowed and weed wacked on a regular basis, no standing water, and leaf debris is kept far in the woods. I plant the following to deter the flying pests: Basil, Coriander, anise, marigolds, lemon grass, lavender. Black flies or May flies hate the smell of cinnamon the most. Other essential oils they dislike as well are peppermint, spearmint & eucalyptus. My neighbor 4 doors down uses Ambro Quick Kill Insect Killer for Lawn & Landscape. This stuff destroys black flies on contact. Then it keeps protecting against new black flies for up to 3 months. They seem to like it, when they entertain for this like graduations, BBQ, spring birthday parties, etc.
I lived in Maine for 30 years. I was depressed 8 months out of the year. I hated it but raised my kids and grandkids there. Basically I lived for the summer, but summers are only 12 weeks long (if you’re lucky). After Columbus Day through Memorial Day the trees are leafless and flowers are just blooming in June. I finally moved back to my hometown in Southern California. I regret that I ever left. Also wages in Maine are way less than other states. I do miss my friends and the church I was a part of for 26 years. But so happy to be near my family in California again. Our two daughters moved out here before we moved back, so that’s another reason I moved. My husband has a sister that lives in Maine so we have been back to visit her. But I’ll never move back.
I’m from the Jersey Shore and would love to hear more about the area you settled in! My son and I have begun our search for the perfect property. We would like to find a spot close to or in a small town. We don’t mind tourism, have lived with busy summer months for many years in South Jersey. High speed internet is a must for work and I know options are limited. Wondering if most areas are flood prone - there are such beautiful homes close to rivers. We find ourselves very drawn to them. Thank you. 💜 To the host of this video - thank you! I enjoyed watching it! 😊 Maine is a beautiful mystery to us and we would love to hear your thoughts!
Agreed, coming from the west it's night and day. Although everything has changed for the worse in health care everywhere since covid. If your going rural it's definitely not good.
Maine offers the poor fake healthcare called MaineCare. If you have this check your credit report. They wipe the services you got on your credit report after about 5 years without your knowledge.
Agree- Maine isn’t going to be for everyone. Relocated here after serving in the military in northern Maine and have found the landscape and wildlife other worldly - I love the stillness as opposed to concrete jungle yet also looking to move abroad within the next year to experience more variation and move beyond comfort zone. Thank you for sharing your insights with us🙏🏻
How many Mainers do you get trying to return after years away only to find themselves priced out? It might be wiser to move to Spain. I'm originally from Portland, then Downeast. Now Texas.
@@toddboothbee1361 Maine has been dying on the vine since the late 80's, early 90's. All it has is a service economy. They no longer produce anything and are incredibly reliant on the tourist trade. Young people are fleeing the state because there is no future for them there
Maine is very beautiful! Not a friendly STATE. ( Towards Non-Mainers) Prefer Southern Maine over Northern Maine My friend moved to Maine & the harsh long winters aged him greatly. ( Snow ⛄️ shoveling) Lots of prejudice in Maine. ( towards ANYONE not from Maine) Heavy Winter Oil costs ( filling the furnace ) Also, if you enjoy DARK days. Maine is your place. Maine loves Hermits and Recluse folks.
i thought about the attitude of prejudice towards people not from Maine, and it was a concern, but ive lived here a few years now, and i have found people with that attitude its a good filter, shows you who not to be around. I have a caregiver who is black and from Rwanda hes been here longer than me and says no one has given him any bs, people were WAY worse in Washington State when i lived there lol it was a joke. Yeah i got you with preferring southern maine over northern maine, theres a happy medium in central maine where its close enough and way cheaper than the coast....i am introvert and this is a dream come true for me, i had to work extremely hard to get here, and i love it. I prefer cold dark winters, i spent 20 years in Mesa , AZ where it was never not hot and sunny, except maybe winter time where it could stil be 80 every so often. i only wish i had things in place to move here sooner, but circumstances got in the way. Hermits and professional shut-ins like me! Rejoice! This is your place haha
Southern Maine is tough with all the building going on, peace and quiet has gone out the window. All the beautiful trees being taken down-COS too expensive! Young people are moving out in droves, nothing here for them.
We might be mean because we’re annoyed with the cost of living and no good shopping 🤣 I’ve been here my entire life and would move in a heartbeat if my husband was willing to. Fun, truthful video 🙂
She says lack of diversity is a major con. There’s a reason why there’s virtually no crime and why Maine is the safest state to live in. Let’s not kid ourselves here. Doesn’t everyone say Maine is how life should be?
Has someone who grew up here and has lived here off and on for over 30 years, it has become overpopulated in relation to housing and business. It is Sky High prices ever since covid hit. Can't afford houses or rent jobs are not keeping up the pay what's the market at all
New Yorker living in Maine since 1990, in Androscoggin County - north of Portland. We are finally working on leaving. Why? Weather - due to climate change, winters are generally warmer and now we get more ice and rainy days than snow per se, and often the snow storms are heavy snow, esp. the most recent one in late spring. Power outages - where I live, just west of Auburn, a generator is a necessary appliance in the house. Got one after the big ice storm in '98 and can't do without it. Lost power 3.5 weeks in that storm and, since then, we've lost power multiple times, including at least 4 times in 2024. As to Maine people, some are very welcoming, but many others we have encountered are not willing to be inclusive to those who are from "Away". And many Maine people don't like to go outside their comfort zone, want everything to be like how life was back in their grandparents' time. And, then, the roads. If you live in a rural or semi-rural area of Maine like we do, you will find road maintenance to be awful, and, during the warmer months when you might wish to explore the state, that's when they have "Construction Season" when they work on the roads, actually the only time they really can. You might wonder, why don't you move down to Southern Maine? Well, the real estate prices south of where we live are insane. Even after selling our paid off home, there is no way we could afford what stuff is going for there. So we are moving to warmer climes where we get more bang for our buck and don't have to worry so much about power outages and dealing with the snow (often every 3 days in winter). Expect that whoever buys our place will commute down to Portland area (that's what I did) as we are only 30 miles away via the Turnpike.
I'm a weather guy, and the wind events and power outages are seemingly getting worse each year. I believe I saw a CMP report that said that is true. Last winter sucked.
People in Maine are not mean. We're just a lot more self-contained and private than most Americans. Also, we get overwhelmed by the annual flood of tourists. Generally speaking, unless you've really earned your place here, and have found a way into our hearts, we'd really prefer you'd just spend your money, enjoy your vacation and go home. We get tired of being priced out of our hometowns and coastlines by wealthy investors and remote earners from away. If you breeze in here and snatch up our grandparents homestead for your vacation home/investment property because a tenth generation fisherman can't afford to keep it anymore and now has to commune two hours to get to the harbor, of course you're going to find the locals are a bit cool towards you. It takes years and a lot of shared hardship to become a Mainer-poverty, and grit, bleak gray winters, and the ability to build a good life out of very little. You can buy up all our waterfront, but you can't buy that.
From Maine and moving back part time. Is it okay with you if I purchase an empty house and fix it up or should I find out if someone is sentimental about it first? My step dad is dying of cancer and I want to be there when I can for my mom. Should I ask the permission of the townspeople or just accept that they treat me poorly?
@@johnqpublic1You missed my point entirely. I don’t advocate any such thing. I’m only trying to explain some of the possible reasons you might have to invest more than money to fit in. Community doesn’t happen overnight. If you expect to breeze into a centuries old, tight-knit community and feel all cozy and welcomed just because you dropped a million dollars on an old farm house, you’re in for a disappointment is all.
TX real estate is no longer cheap in the cities, we have bad droughts, bugs, terrible heat, border problem, terrible traffic, been in tX 50 yrs. Houston for 37 yrs, can't wait to get out, it's very tough at 69 to relocate
if you wanna live in Maine and be part of the community and contribute, thats great. There are sacrifices to be made, to live in one of the top 3 or 4 most beautiful places in the world with the lowest crime in the country, for violent crime and one of the top 5 for other kinds of crime as well. Southern Maine is expensive but so is anywhere else people want to live. For whats its worth, my caregiver is from Rwanda and no one gives him a hard time or anything. i love Maine and the tourism pumps tons of money in the state , which is great. New Englanders are not outwardly friendly, i have found that if they dont know you, they wont talk to you. Thats great! thats what i want! once you get to know somebody though, as long as you are a good person, people will help you! im never leaving, lol
Maine is a shit hole and if it wasn't for the fact my ancestors decided to reside here I would have never lived here. Now I'm stuck because of inflation and out of state douches purchasing all the real estate and driving the prices up to absurd rates so locals can't even afford to live here.
Best place to live in Maine for someone on ssdi that loves the outdoors specially fishing and hunting along with harvesting berries an mushrooms and such.?.
I live in South Berwick and i was notified via Mail that a company from Massachusetts is coming to the area to Re-access my property taxes. What kind of increase should i expect?
Hold on to you hat. We had that done in Gorham. My property tripled in value. Great if I want to sell, but awful for taxes and if I wanted to buy another house here. Especially with the interest rates now.
I live there, it’s not bad, it’s just a lot of forest, your fine here, in fact we get hundreds of thousands of visitors a year because of fun town splash town, Acadia, and so much more, leave us alone!!!
@@livinginsouthernmaine then why tell people to stay away? I mean, unless it was a joke video, then that’s fine, but if it’s serious, then that’s like saying to keep people from moving to Canada or Alaska, because everything you described is both other places, humid hot summers, black fly/mosquitos everywhere, allergies, and everything else is just those other places, hell people in Maine aren’t mean, we are some of the kindest people, if you want mean, go to California or Florida, they’ll give you mean
@@cryoking5025Oh my God this is one of my issues with Mainer LOL. You guys are so freaking defensive. And I say this as a native. It's like living in a cult. Unless you want to spend your life working a blue collar job, Maine might not be for you. If you're young and full of life and energetic and just want to explore so many things and meet many different new people, Maine might not be for you. If you don't want to have to turn something as simple as going to a Red Sox game into a weekend trip because you're so far away from civilization, then Maine might not be for you. Just because you get a hard on simply hearing the numbers 207 doesn't mean that everyone else will. There's a reason why young people like her and I don't want to be here. There's a reason why almost everyone in this state is 45 and older.

Wow! I can’t believe the line of BS in the video and comments! I live in Very Northern Maine. Moved here with the Air Force in 1976 and stayed. Homes were very affordable. Land very affordable. ( during Covid pricing went sky high with people from away trying to escape cities. It has just started to go down). People keep to themselves mostly. But if you ask for help they won’t turn you down. Year round Plenty of outdoor activities year round. Granted not much night life anymore. Great family life. #1 problem is drugs and lack of mental health care. Fuel prices are prob the same everywhere. Just use a bit more of it here in the winter. To live here you need good transportation. Help wanted signs are everywhere. And if you’re skilled you will do ok.. if politics is a requirement for you fine but northern Maine is very conservative. Don’t try to change that. Canada is close by and easy to go to. Bangor and the coast 3-4 hr drive. I will say if you want to party hard, into drugs and or want to change things then Maine isn’t for you.
Yes they brought in thousands of Somalis and dumped them in the middle of Mn. The friction is horrible. They tell everyone dogs are filthy and against their religion ( not true I was raised a moslem their prophet had dogs and slept with them as a sheep herder) they stand around and give everyone stink eye in gang like groups and there had been a lot xtra crime from them.
Trust me Portland is not like it was from the 90's. Now it's just a gentrified armpit full of newyorker and massholes larping as mainers that no self respecting Mainer likes.
I finally left Maine. Born and raises in Augusta and lived in Portland over the last decade + but it's just not a good state for young people, the prices and of course the winters. I moved in March of 2023 to the west and I don't miss Maine at all. If my family wasn't still in Maine I'd never go back to visit lol.
This is exactly what I'm talking about. My kids all moved out too. For all the "We are being overrun by outsiders". I reply, if outsiders didn't move here the state would shrivel up and die. Maine is the oldest state in the nation. We need to find a way to keep young people here, or embrace the people from away keeping the economy going.
Texan here looking for a place to retire. After watching your video I think I'll plan a visit there. How is it in Northern Maine? Say the Fort Fairfield area?
@@livinginsouthernmaine 1) no economy 2) the people are clannish 3) politics, particularly in southern Maine 4) my closest relatives are there 5) dealing w state and local regulations is a nightmare 6) taxes I enjoyed the seasons, weather, and general ruralness, but the above reasons along w a few others outweigh all of that. I have WAY more work, better money, lower taxes, milder weather, and friendlier state and local govt. I still pursue the same outdoor activities as there. Some are easier and better here, some not. Crime is undoubtedly higher here, but not where l am located, and l pick my jobs to avoid the problem areas. I am rolling thru horse and cow country here, the roads are a dream. Please dont compare portland to other cities in maine.Portland is huge and tons of opportunities.Maybe small cities like caribou or presque isle may not satisfies but portland is a definite answer.PS .I was born raised in there and still living.
Portland is this state's armpit. It's great if you if you love overpriced parking and restaurants, and drug addicts leaving used needles and feces on the streets.
Would like some input on moving to Maine, specifically Belfast. My husband is a physician and may be taking a temporary position there for about a year. From what I have researched, Maine appears to be beautiful with a lot of pros but after reading the comments speaking about lack of diversity being a pro I am slightly concerned. My husband is white but I am hispanic with a brown complexion. I have a masters degree, I am a genuinely kind person, and grew up in white suburbia so I am used to being one of the few colored people in a community. That being said, should I worry that I may be treated differently if we decide to move to Maine or are the negative comments about diversity on here not a true representation of the state? Open to comments from anyone who can shed some light!
Mainers are not racists. They are simply conservative in general. Maine has been governed by Marxists for the last 20 years and they have been steadily bringing in the kind of people no one wants to live with. If you're a nice person they will pick up on it and you will be welcomed.
if you come to Maine to get away from the city that your politcs have ruined, leave those politics there. we're getting beat up by mass, NY, and california politics. we've been flooded and things are changing here, NOT at all for the better.
Maine, they just released this week has the oldest population in the country. Even the right wing radio station WGAN's host comments on not enough population growth to keep the economy growing here. Like New Hampshire, there needs to be an influx of young people and business. People hate on southern Maine, but towns aren't dying like the more rural parts of the State. Just saw a report where another hospital is closing and the distance to one now is an overly long drive. The people that are here are all retirees. All our kids move out of state. Part of the reason they leave is the isolated nature of living here. The pandemic created a real estate boom, but I guess half those people will move out. We need young families here, hopefully with managed growth for the more populated towns. Local kids aren't keeping this state thriving. Listen, I hate too when new developments get put in and things like that, but I wouldn't say this state is getting "flooded". Kids just have different political views.
Maine is the best. Growing up in a big city. This is it. If you’re not a bitch and can stand a little snow. It’s all good. She’s talking about one specific place in Maine.
Who cares. I happen to like mostly white population. I'm sick of this country turning into a 3rd world melting pot with idiots that come from middle eastern countries or the like and can't drive in the snow. FYI , I happen to like the snow. I work in the summer heat on rooftops with the humidity and the bugs. I happen to be an educated but very mechanical person who can pretty much build anything. I can't stand grown men who can't even use a screwdriver. Most people in my neighborhood come right to my house for everything and I'm kinda getting sick of it. I like people and have many friends but I might give it a try one day, to get away from the constant masses and generally just people in your face all of the time.
Dated a chick from Yarmouth. Had lots of fun in Portland at 3 dollar Dewey's and a great skateboarding scene. She ended up dumping me and married Stephen stills. I liked Maine but grew up in Worcester mass. Now that place really sucks. I love out west now. Much better everything than the east coast!
3:23 umm. we have timber rattlesnakes as well as these huge black river snakes. no. not water mocassins. they arent poisonous. we also have american nursery spiders as well as wolf spiders. and some kind of yellow backed scorpion looking spider that has gotta be poisonous but idk what it is nor would i risk touching them. we also have mountain lions. black bears. coyotes and possibly wolves. as well as other smaller cats and fisher cats which are not a cat. thats just off the top of my head. but if that doesnt bother u too much u may wanna know i spend 4 to 6 months of the year living outside in a tent. may to october
We have roaches the size of dogs , lol scorpions in your home every where and termites, yup they all want to escape 120 degrees in summer months, it sucks here in Laughlin
I'm not being critical, just making an observation. "Maine is a primarily homogeneous state". Funny how in the USA those that are of Scottish, Norwegian, Irish, Italian, German, English, French and Polish descent are together considered a "homogeneous" group but, in Europe those aforementioned groups would not be considered homogeneous. What's really Interesting to me is that in the USA we are never taught when, why and how this happened. 🤔
It’s true that in Europe, those groups might be seen as distinct, but in the U.S., they’ve historically been grouped together as 'white,' especially in the context of systemic treatment and social privilege. It’s a fascinating part of our history of race and immigration and is pretty well-documented if you’re interested in exploring it. The idea of 'homogeneity' here is really more about how society perceives and treats different groups.
@@tyradavis6045 That's exactly my point, along with the fact that in Europe where you had English vs Irish, English vs French, English vs Scott, German vs French, German vs Pole, Russian vs Pole, Russian vs French, Serb vs Croatian etc all fighting each other tooth and nail. Then they all get on a boat sail to the Americas, all those divisions are put aside and all those groups who were fighting each other for centuries all of a sudden become "white". How and why, that happened is never taught or discussed in the USA. As Dr Gerald Horne stated, you can study history at the undergrad level, or the grad level and you won't see a course that explains how and why that historical fact occurred.
Honestly there is also a misconception about the south as well I have lived in the south most of my life but I also have lived in other states and country but the rudest place I have lived and live is Georgia they are not nice and by far the worst place I have ever lived and if I could I would move. Growing up as a military child I had the opportunity to meet lots of different people. So I definitely understand the misconceptions.
Great info. However, the lack of diversity is not necessarily a con. To say that is a racist accusation against the people living there. But it is politically correct. The lack of diversity is assumed to be a negative because the state is mostly white.
Lack of diversity shouldn't be a "con." It should be a neutral thing. Some people like more diversity and some like a more homogenous culture. Most countries are not as diverse as the US, UK and India.
I DO NOT KNOW WHERE YOU ARE FROM , I have lived here 72years ,except for years in the Army , and I found bugs and deadly bugs and some realyrude people , the problem is in the past 25- 30 years alot of out of state people have moved here and try to change everything. Just ask any fisherman along the coast L
This is my response to these racist in the comments that don’t want diversity here and are associating crime going up with diversity that is a racist and stereotypical statement……, OK because 90% of the mass shootings that have happened are committed by white male USA citizens and most of the people who receive food stamps, are white people so stop with the stereotypes. OK we are here. Diversity is here we just keep to ourselves because of people like you who are ignorant and listening to hateful rhetoric! Maine has been predominantly a democratic/independent center state and you say yourself that it is a safe place to live black brown people have been coming here since the 80s Somalians have been brought here due to Blackhawk down and that was the government’s fault, and it still was safe to live in Maine all these yearsso stop it stop the hate to stop it
I’m from New England. Specifically RI. I moved to another New England state. I’m Hispanic and I’m brown. I’ve been to Maine all but once and that’s all I needed to know that I would NEVER live there. I don’t need to be somewhere where people hate me because of how I look, and treat me differently and negatively because of that fact. It’s pathetic and sad. All Mainers can have Maine.
That is completely false. I've lived here for over 45 years and there is no "hate" that I experience. I have a lot of friends here too. Of course racism is everywhere, but it's a lot worse in other states, trust me. I don't know where you were or experienced, but I go about my daily life here with no feeling of hate at all surrounding me. People in Maine will go out of their way to help you which was is different than other northeast states. They never ask for anything in return either.
I agree the clowns who voted for the coke snorting hag we have now in the Blaine house deserve all the scorn and hatred they get. Janet has done so much to screw up this state with her awful leadership and destroying the state budget to line her friends pockets and fund their pet projects.
Southern Maine really isn't part of Maine, you want to experience me and you have to go up North, Maine isn't for most you have to like the outdoors if you spend most of your time indoors, don't come here. The food is awesome here you just have to grow it and cook it yourself, LOL people aren't mean you just have to get to know them, really traveled down south the people are assholes
Southern Maine is part of Maine. Just because you don't like the area doesn't make it less Maine. The last time I looked the border was still over the Piscataqua bridge. And don't bother with all the northern Mass and liberals and blah blah blah. I've heard it all. This world is too into divisive talk.
Low temperatures : check Low population density : check Very rural : check High cost of living : check Very homogenous population : check No honking : check Mean people : check Maine is Finland but in english lol.
I live in Michigan, very different in some ways but I enjoy visiting Maine. I go for work 2 -3 times a year and stay 2 weeks usually and will actually be there again in a couple weeks for a couple week stay again. We get our snow in the winter as well, but I will say about the slower pace and driving. I speed, I'll admit it and I have passed so many especially on back roads for going very slow. I have even had people pull over for me to pass them. It looks like they are turning somewhere and then I can see them get back on the road. Probably the one major thing that gets annoying while there, but I do like the nature.
people in the country in other states do the same - they get on the shoulder to allow more aggressive drivers to pass - it's referred to as being a courteous driver.
@@AB-ol5uzoh I hear ya, it’s funny you replied as I just got back here Monday again for two weeks. I would actually move here but my biggest gripe is the slow driving. In Michigan if you aren’t doing 30 over then get off the road.
Negative 80? 😂😂 you live in southern Maine in live in Millinocket which is 2 hours away from the Canadian border. It’s only been -80 once that I can recall. But NOT in the summer Ayo what 😂
Thank you for the information! I have to ask though about politics. We moved to Florida for five years. I'd been visiting Florida for 50 years. First my grandparents moved there and then my parents. So I thought I knew and loved Florida. After giving it 5 years I couldn't pack my bags fast enough after the passing of my Dad. Fueling the move was the politics. Talk about mean people! I had broken my leg, and had severe kidney issues. My son was pushing my wheelchair into a doctors office and as we approached the entrance a man spit on me for wearing a mask. The mask was required by the doctors office, and my mask was to protect me as a direct result of my bad kidney. Spit on me!! So much for southern hospitality. I don't think it exists any more. We moved back to Jersey where we are used to harsh snowy winters but the people are kind no matter their politics.
I’m born and raised native Floridian. Yes, the people have become assholes, but it’s the people who are transplants to Florida, not the actual natives. I too would like to leave Florida due to the mean people, over population and high cost of living.
@@livinginsouthernmaine Stupid cliché. There is plenty of rural Maine in Southern Maine that resembles nothing as far as Mass goes. They hate Portland and it's suburbs, but there is way more to Southern Maine than Portland. Part of it is jealousy because it's more affluent for sure.

Been here my whole life, Im 56 ... love it!
Thank you for sharing your experience, we love Maine too!
Lewiston is a shit hole! Crime is out of control! People that live there hear gun shots almost daily

I like places that have less people, are not that noisy, and have a lot of outdoor scenery. Maine sounds cool to me.
Thanks.

I'm sorry you had that experience, what town do you live in?

So sick of the complaining about 'lack of diversity'. Who cares? That isn't a bullet point with a lot of people. Take Maine for what it is. A beautiful, peaceful area.
I can’t agree more. That is a huge plus to me. I am sick of my car getting broke into by diversity. I just want to be around respectful and decent people.
@@Jeffopar well considering that there is no diversity as you confirmed, wouldn’t that mean your break ins are likely from your fellow comrades?
Your statement kinda contradicts itself lol and it appears your white buddies are actually breaking into your car.
Trust me, diversity will destroy the peacefulness of Maine….lets get real.
Yeah Maine sux minus the population. So there's that.

My advice to those who move to Maine is leave the expectations you currently have behind and expect resistance to change because we like it how it is.
what has changed?

Glad we could help, thanks for watching!
You might be in for a big surprise 😂
This video is far from realistic
Portland is not like the rest of Maine.
Get ready!
The worst part about Maine is the Connecticut people and the massive amount of Massachusetts

Same is happening in Florida, a lot of people from the Northeast have moved here and have made it unaffordable
Hegefunds (black rock) and foreign nationals are buying everything everywhere! The 50 states need better regulations, laws and agency to combat this. Write and influence your community to write to your congressman. Do not be a bystander no one will do it for you.
Same thing is happening in Tennessee.

Ikr...it's very sad...I've always loved Maine
Not many getting welfare benefits in Southern Maine-with all the almost million dollar homes for sale, you will be hard pressed in this part of York Country to find poverty, let alone the middle class. Also, not true about getting beeped at is not true-people drive pretty fast around here and they will definitely blow their horns when you are stopped at a stop sign, no joke.
You’re obviously not from York county..
All the diverse people from southern Maine come only for welfare benefits?
Maine has certainly changed a lot over the years...thanks for sharing your thoughts
Loved your video. Thank you for the info. Are the mosquitos really, really bad everywhere in Maine?
Thank you! Honestly, it really depends on the area. They can be if you are in and around the woods.
Yes. And don't forget about the black fly season. Always keep the bug spray close.
But we do because we haven’t sprayed so if your bother is mosquitoes you could get it sprayed or find a place that’s less likely to get them but there is blackflies in the Mosquitoes.
we dont have any mosquito issues in northern maine, and Ive never seen a tick up here
Thanks for the disclaimer 😎
#1 is the bugs (biters) for sure, can easly wreck an outing depending on where your going.
Yup!
This is what insect repellents are for.
Thank you, I’ll have to give that stuff a whirl and see if I have any luck. I appreciate it.
Dont move to Maine. It was ok before 2019 but not affordable anymore.

Thank you. 💜
To the host of this video - thank you! I enjoyed watching it! 😊
Maine is a beautiful mystery to us and we would love to hear your thoughts!
What's healthcare like? For those of us who might want to retire to Maine it can be an important concern/need...
Health care rates are similar across the country. Maine has a great healthcare system. Better in the more populated areas.
Agreed, coming from the west it's night and day. Although everything has changed for the worse in health care everywhere since covid. If your going rural it's definitely not good.
Maine offers the poor fake healthcare called MaineCare. If you have this check your credit report. They wipe the services you got on your credit report after about 5 years without your knowledge.
healthcare in rural Maine north of Augusta sucks. If you are in southern Maine, you have access to Boston.
Shortage of physicians in Maine ( Augusta) my experience
Agree- Maine isn’t going to be for everyone. Relocated here after serving in the military in northern Maine and have found the landscape and wildlife other worldly - I love the stillness as opposed to concrete jungle yet also looking to move abroad within the next year to experience more variation and move beyond comfort zone. Thank you for sharing your insights with us🙏🏻
How many Mainers do you get trying to return after years away only to find themselves priced out? It might be wiser to move to Spain. I'm originally from Portland, then Downeast. Now Texas.
With costs increasing this is unfortunately a reality for some.
Left in 2017 after 45 years. I will not return even just to visit, much less live there.

i thought about the attitude of prejudice towards people not from Maine, and it was a concern, but ive lived here a few years now, and i have found people with that attitude its a good filter, shows you who not to be around. Hermits and professional shut-ins like me! Rejoice! This is your place haha
Southern Maine is tough with all the building going on, peace and quiet has gone out the window. All the beautiful trees being taken down-COS too expensive! Young people are moving out in droves, nothing here for them.

LMAO... Southern Maine is actually Northern Massachusetts... So "Don't Move to Maine" is more directly aimed at Massholes... 😁
what a nice rascist type you are. there are arseholes in maine eoo.
Essentially Maine's 1st Congressional District is Northern Massachusetts.
Expect that whoever buys our place will commute down to Portland area (that's what I did) as we are only 30 miles away via the Turnpike.
great post, thanks for sharing
You want to limit where your fellow Americans can choose to live? Sounds pretty authoritarian to me, my friend.
Gotta share poverty? Wtf?
@@sidehustlefinanceIf you’re from Maine originally, and you still have family here, I can’t imagine you not being welcomed home.
@@johnqpublic1You missed my point entirely. I don’t advocate any such thing. I’m only trying to explain some of the possible reasons you might have to invest more than money to fit in. Community doesn’t happen overnight. if you wanna live in Maine and be part of the community and contribute, thats great.
Great comment! It sounds perfect! 💜
Maine is a shit hole and if it wasn't for the fact my ancestors decided to reside here I would have never lived here. Now I'm stuck because of inflation and out of state douches purchasing all the real estate and driving the prices up to absurd rates so locals can't even afford to live here.
Do people rent dry cabins in Maine? I currently rent a dry cabin 5 miles outside of palmer Alaska for $550.00 plus electric a month...

Haha yup, Maine has a lot of good qualities too!

My brother lives in burnham and he wants me to movie there i live in a small town now not sure their are jobs for auto mechanic
Don't. Unless you want titles like "Cash Cow" or "victim"

I Lived in Portland Maine as a Kid!!! I LOVED Every Minute of it!!!! I am Planning to MOVE back up there!!!!
Isolated as all hell. Freezing cold. Lots of Amish settling in Fort Fairfield. But no crime, good people, peace and quiet and beautiful scenery.
Lived in Maine for 45 years, yup, it sucks. You can't drag me back at gunpoint
Why do you say that?
@@livinginsouthernmaine
1) no economy
2) the people are clannish
3) politics, particularly in southern Maine
4) my closest relatives are there
5) dealing w state and local regulations is a nightmare
6) taxes
I enjoyed the seasons, weather, and general ruralness, but the above reasons along w a few others outweigh all of that. I have no reason or desire to return.
Sounds like Tennessee
Please dont compare portland to other cities in maine.Portland is huge and tons of opportunities.Maybe small cities like caribou or presque isle may not satisfies but portland is a definite answer.PS .I was born raised in there and still living.
Portland is this state's armpit. It's great if you if you love overpriced parking and restaurants, and drug addicts leaving used needles and feces on the streets.
Love your informative videos! ❤
Thank you, we appreciate it!

I live in southern Maine and absolutely love it
We do too:) Thanks for watching!
if you come to Maine to get away from the city that your politcs have ruined, leave those politics there. we're getting beat up by mass, NY, and california politics. we've been flooded and things are changing here, NOT at all for the better.
To each their own, thanks for tuning in!
I wish you could see it from our perspective.
Preach.
we have same problem in TX, too many people coming here from all over, lots of Florida plates I see here every day, but many others as well
Maine, they just released this week has the oldest population in the country.
Im thinking to move there, did they a lot of opportunities job?
Maine is the best. Growing up in a big city. This is it. If you’re not a bitch and can stand a little snow. It’s all good. She’s talking about one specific place in Maine.
Thank you. ✨😊✨
"Lack of diversity" is NOT a valid criticism as it only applies to majority white areas.
Exactly. It exposes more of her own biases than the area's.
I like people and have many friends but I might give it a try one day, to get away from the constant masses and generally just people in your face all of the time.
pretty state, but winters are brutal
Dated a chick from Yarmouth. Had lots of fun in Portland at 3 dollar Dewey's and a great skateboarding scene. She ended up dumping me and married Stephen stills. I liked Maine but grew up in Worcester mass. Now that place really sucks. I love out west now. Much better everything than the east coast!
Does Maine have rats the size of cats like DC and NY?
3:23 umm. we have timber rattlesnakes as well as these huge black river snakes. no. not water mocassins. they arent poisonous. we also have american nursery spiders as well as wolf spiders. and some kind of yellow backed scorpion looking spider that has gotta be poisonous but idk what it is nor would i risk touching them. we also have mountain lions. black bears. coyotes and possibly wolves. as well as other smaller cats and fisher cats which are not a cat. thats just off the top of my head. but if that doesnt bother u too much u may wanna know i spend 4 to 6 months of the year living outside in a tent. may to october

Most countries are not as diverse as the US, UK and India.
talking about diversity is a form of racism. why do they feel the need to be concerned about diversity? why on earth is that even a topic?
Diversity is wrecking the UK. No go areas popping up all over. It's not a good thing.
She meant if you're black or Hispanic, you probably wouldn't fit in.
@@newmoon984331 Because a lot of brown people don't love moving somewhere that is basically all white. This is valuable information for some people.
Lack of diversity is a positive. Most White people that actually live in diverse areas are miserable. Diversity is not a strength.

That is completely false. I've lived here for over 45 years and there is no "hate" that I experience. I have a lot of friends here too. Of course racism is everywhere, but it's a lot worse in other states, trust me.

In our experience, people in Maine are friendly and kind, regardless of their political views. I'm so sorry you and your son experienced that!
