- Official PRIER Products Repair Video--If your PRIER C-134, C-144 or P-164 Series residential hydrant is leaking behind the handle, you can repair the hydrant from the exterior of the structure with parts from the Wall Hydrant Repair Kit part # C-134KT-803. *PLEASE NOTE: Since the creation of this video, we have updated our vacuum breakers to aluminum caps. These caps are seen on the C-144, P-164 and 400 Series Residential Hydrants, as well as the C-144KT-806 and 630-7500 kits. These vacuum breakers are now universal and will fit all past and present PRIER and Mansfield style residential hydrants.

Same for me. Just went outside and fixed the leak, this video was PERFECT!! I had this exact problem. All I did was tighten the valve stem cover which was loose and no more leaking through the handle. Now days, this would have been a $150 plumber bill.

Thank you for your video! I was able to fix mine after 18 years of not using the leaking faucet. Moved in into a brand new house and the faucet was leaking a little during use. I remember trying to tighten it at that time but that didn’t help. Stopped using it since this one is inside the garage. After so many years of dealing with a very long hose using another faucet on the back of the house I finally decided to try it again and this time it was already leaking profusely through the handle. Thankfully, Home Depot had the repair kit. I replaced both the washer and the packing. Not sure what was the issue. The original washer looked a little different, sort of bent, so I decided to use the one from the kit. This fixed the leak.

My mansfield style has a slow drip. I bought the repair kit and there is seemingly no way to get the blasted handle off. I've wedged behind it with a wrench, tapped it lightly with a hammer... The thing will NOT budge. In your video it seemingly pretty much just falls off on its own... Suggestions??? Thanks...
I tried forever to get the handle off and it is stiff, could I possibly have a different model, I have the silver cap on top. I tightened the big hex and it stopped leaking for now, I just have to replace the plunger parts it leaks too. It’s only 10 months old. I turned the big hex and loosened it, but the whole long tube inside the house came with it. I didn’t pull it out all the way, don’t want any leaks, hopefully nothing was damaged. Suggestions?
I’m not sure of what model I have. I can’t seem to remove the handle at all. I have removed the screw but handle seems to be a part of the stem.
The above wasn't my problem but it was helpful. The issue I am having is that I cannot get the screw out to remove the handle. It has completely rusted. I tried the special oil, using a ratchet, cursing it all to no avail. I just went ahead and removed the entire stem with the handle attached and ordered the repair kit, stem replacement (C-134/234), and a new valve stem cap. I hope it all fits together properly. Clearly, my house is too old. But is there anything I can do to get the old screw out? I did not want to risk breaking it off inside in case I needed the old stem cap and stem.
Tanya, unfortunately, it's an old model and the screws Mansfield used before we acquired the hydrant division used metal screws. We use stainless steel screws. If you tried the oil, about the only other way to remove it would be to drill the screw out. However, you could risk damaging the threads and stem. That kit should work great. Probably a stupid question, but why leave the old stainless steel washer if the -803 kit comes with a new stainless steel washer?

You can tighten that by hand. It's just a thread cap basically.
Appreciate the video, but why are these so prone to leaking? I have a 1 year old house and the contractor used these. One is leaking massively in an intermediate position, the other has a consistent drip. I've had generic sillcocks on other houses that never leaked at all for years.
That seems odd and rare. The packing nut might be a bit loose. Sometimes that can occur from someone at retail turning it. Some areas have higher levels of lime and minerals in the water. You could turn off the water, remove the packing nut, turn the water back on for 10-15 seconds and "flush" the system, then put the packing nut back on. That will blow out any debris from new construction or minerals in the water. That typically helps ensure all the parts inside are sealing correctly and not causing a leak. Let us know if that helps. Mine leak through, Since my house update I have 5 of these go bad and the 6th started leaking through today. Replaced #5 with a 30 dollar cheapy and it's doing just fine. I think there may be quality concern here. I will not go back with another Prier.

What if the handle won’t come off after removing the screw?
It can be tough if it's been on there a while. How old is it? When the handle is screwed onto the stem, the stem expands slightly. This can make it difficult to remove the handle.
If you rock the handle side to side and use a little oil, it usually comes off easier. If you tried rocking it back and forth, used oil, give us a call us at 800-362-9055 or send an email at orders@prier.com.
❓What tool used to remove valve cap???
Ordered the C-134KT-803 kit. I CANNOT REMOVE THE HANDLE!!?!? I removed the screw and the handle will NOT BUDGE! I think mine is a C-144 with this silver cap (not green). Has anyone run into this? Do you know how to get the handle off?

What do I do if I can't remove my handle after removing the screw?
Elliott. I'm sorry to hear you are having difficulty removing the handle. To remove the handle once the screw is removed, simply pull the handle straight toward you and off the stem. It sounds like this is not working for you. I'm unsure of the age of your faucet, but if it's fairly old, it may be slightly corroded. Spraying a small amount of WD-40 or vinegar behind the handle - where the base of the handle meets the internal stem - may help release the handle. Thank you for the quick response. I was actually hitting it with a hammer trying to get the handle to come off and it wasn't budging. So i'll give customer service a try.
@@elliottgermanovich3081 Were you able to remove the handle? If so, how did you do it? I still have not be able to, no matter how much prying, banging, or pulling I've tried. I think I need a new stem because I can't get the handle off to repair other parts of my faucet.
@@juliekannel4072 I think I was able to get it off but it was a while ago and don't quite remember exactly how. I pretty much remember prying the heck out of it until it finally came out. I may have used a hammer not a rubber mallet. If I were you I wouldn't worry about breaking it, just give it some really really good whacks and you might have some luck. Thats pretty much all I can say from what I remember sorry I can't be more help.
If anyone is still interested, I had the same problem with my 20 year old faucet. No amount of prying or pounding was going to get the handle off - it was really corroded on tight. I actually broke the pot metal handle in the process leaving only the "hub" of the handle. To fix it, I first turned off the water at the shut off valve and then unscrewed the entire thing including the stem. Once that was out, I then cut two slots on either side of the remaining "handle hub" using a Dremel cutoff wheel as far as I could (making sure to not cut into the brass shaft or valve stem cap). From that point, it was easy prying off the remaining handle pieces using a flat blade screwdriver. The good news is my faucet no longer leaks. Bad news is I need a new handle. :)

How about the hot/cold hydrant C-108D12? Brand new, just installed - both leak everytime we use hot. The snugging is a short term "band-aid" next time around is leaking again. I guess the kit advertised is really only a sales pitch. I doubt buying another to replace the new one just installed, is going to fix my problem.
Like other reviewers said... I don't think this is engineered very well. If you do a home depot search and read some reviews, you'll find this is not an "odd - rare" occurrence.... not only that, but no replies to help customers either

how do I know whether I have a c134, c144 or p164?
The p-164 is a quarter turn. That means full on with a quarter turn. The 144 has a vacuum breaker on the top. Round disk shape on top of the faucet.

I can not get the handle off, even after removing the screw and trying to pry it off the stem numerous times. I tried WD40, liquid wrench, a rubber mallet..... Still stuck on there. I have replacement parts that I ordered and want to install them, including the green handle that needs replacing. The handle has a coating that is flaking off, so I want to replace that with the new one I bought. I just can't remove the handle to install the new parts.
It sounds like if the handle is really stuck on there after the screw is off, it may be mineral deposits adhering to the handle. We wouldn't recommend using any harsh chemicals in this situation, but perhaps trying some vinegar on it to loosen up the minerals might help. Ok heres a stupied question when replacing the washer on the know and the upper cap dobyiu have to shut the water off
