Star Model A Carbine

  • Star introduced the Model A as the commercial sale version of the Model 1920 and 1921 pistols which they had entered into Spanish military trials in 1920. The pistol was rejected by the Army in favor of the Astra 400, but the Spanish Guardia Civil adopted it as their standard sidearm. The original design included a grip safety which was quickly removed, and in 1921 the Model A was added to Star’s sales catalog.
    The blossoming civil war in China was creating a significant demand for automatic pistols by the late 1920s, especially ones with shoulder stocks and large magazines. The Mauser C96 was proving exceptionally popular, and Star attempted to gain a foothold in that market with a carbine variant of their Model A. This version included an extended barrel, wooden combination holster and stock, and optional 16- and 32-round magazines. It was chambered for the 7.63mm Mauser cartridge, instead of the 9mm Largo used by the domestic Spanish market.
    The Star failed to sell well, however, being far less popular that the C96 and its lookalikes (such as the Astra Model 900 series). Even a select-fire version of the Star failed to drive significant sales, and the gun was discontinued in 1928.

    Stocked pistols are an interesting area. Less efficient than a true carbine perhaps, and the rear sight is rather far from the eye. But they are relatively light and usable to some distance. I am sure the military and Winchester had all that in mind while developing the M1 Carbine. I like the stocked and tangent sighted Hi-Powers the best, but i wonder if the C96 had better range. Great video as always

    Exported to Japan and then to China? Considering the disappointing nature of Japan's military handguns , I'm surprised these did not become more influential in Japan.

    • @Lowlandlord
      @Lowlandlord 4 года назад +6

      Mostly exported to Japan as a means to sell them in China, through Japanese companies that were sold them by European companies to act as intermediaries in a foreign continent. The "disappointing nature of Japan's military handguns" thing is largely overblown, they did their job and were hardly an important part of their military doctrine. China is one of the few markets in the world were pistols were ever an important part of the military doctrine, and only for a time due to imposed import regulations. The Imperial Japanese Army would not have been more successful if it had a Sig P226.

    I'm curious what your opinion as a weapons expert is on the recent selection of the Sig Sauer P320 (probably designated M17) chosen to replace the M9 pistol in the US military. Best choice possible? Striker fire best solution? What about the chosen 9mm ammo calibre, way to go or not? What's your personal experience with the gun, do you like it over other striker fire pistols like the Glock series? How important do you value the P320's modularity over other pistols? Etc.

    • @ForgottenWeapons

    • @Ki113r210
      @Ki113r210 7 лет назад +1

      the army is actually considering dropping 9mm in favor of 40 s&w for the p320. there is apparently some talk about the US leaving Nato as well.

    • @Drrolfski
      @Drrolfski 7 лет назад +1

      Source of the Nato news? Or is this another one of these Russian instigated fake "news" items designed to create FUD and instability? Btw the FBI claims after elaborate investigation for modern 9mm ammo to be superior over 40 S&W for good reasons. I'm pretty sure the army has taken notice.

    • @Ki113r210
      @Ki113r210 7 лет назад

      Well, as far as caliber, one or two sources say they stuck with 9mm, but most others say they wanted a more potent round and either haven't decided or went with 40. As for leaving nato, trump and the Republican party have been pretty vocal about leaving, and the army potentially picking a non nato round may back that, but that's mostly hear-say.

    • @Drrolfski
      @Drrolfski 7 лет назад

      Criticizing Nato is not the same as leaving it. And the switch to 40 S&W as standard side arm ammo is highly unlikely considering this same Nato and the shitload of 9mm stockpiles laying around. Especially as it has turned out that pistol calibre has no significant effect on stopping power over accuracy.

      VonEror correct me if I am wrong but in the cases where the holster is on the left the butt of the gun is facing forwards. In this case, because of the button and the loop the butt would be facing backwards as for a left handed shooter. Maybe it's got a hole for the butt on both sides but I didn't see one.

    I would really love to have a modern stocked pistol. The blowback carbines have a few detractions: 1) blowbacks have a wierd recoil impulse. They tend to have a 1.5 lb bolt due to the mass required to run with a reasonable spring rate. This is often harsher than a proper rifle. 2) blowbacks are necessarily heavy and bulky which ofsets the advantages of a pistol caliber. 3) They usually arent' rated for +P ammo, which would mitigate the weaknesses of pistol cartridges. That includes most of the anti vest ammo that makes sense in a PDW role. 4) they only work in big format. No handy pistol, that can be stocked. This kills their utility as a lightweight backpackable survival tool. i.e. A bush pilot's crash kit foraging tool. A light locked breach poly pistol with a skeletal plastic stock would maybe weigh under 3 lbs and could handle 10mm or hot 9mm ammo.

      I agree Dayton. With the current 16" barrel requirement and 26" over all length requirement, pistol caliber carbines don't have much of an advantage over rifles chambered in larger calibers. I think they really excel when they are the size of an mp5 or an sbr'd scorpion evo. Very compact, but you get more power and capacity than you would with a pistol in the same caliber.

    The "No pistol stocks" implications of the NFA is one of the absolute stupidest things in gun law. It's the equivalent to how the Okinawan weapons are banned in some places, when most of the Okinawan weapons are things anyone with basic command of hand tools can whip up in a hardware store in a quarter of an hour (those they don't just find there; I don't remember all the Japanese names, but one's literally just a sickle and another is the ever-popular "Length of chain with a heavy bit at the end" thingy. Yet another reason why the NFA sucks and should be repealed.

    my affection for stocked pistols has to begin with the stocked Colts from the american civil war era then the Mauser's and Luger's but except for modifications done by gangsters of the 20's&30's to the 1911 i thought stocked 1911's with extended magazine's was fairly recent gimmick.

    Imagine looking at a handgun and thinking "I really like this but I can't buy it unless I can put a shoulder stock and grip on it if I want to, also unless I can put a selector on it and make it a full auto machine gun
    Then imagine a gunsmith telling you "oh yeah I can do that gimme a day or so", then 24 hours later you're walking out of Jeff's Guns & Ammo with your short barreled fully automatic machine pistol to go take it home to the wife and kids
    People in the 1920s didn't know how good they had it

    A lot of the strange, one of a kind weapons that show up on your channel don't sound like they get used that much, if ever. Do gunsmiths ever try to make replicas of rare or bizarre weapons just for the purpose of having one that they don't have to worry about preserving as much?
    I don't know anything about making guns, so I don't know if a gun maker would need blueprints to copy something or if they can just take a gun apart and try to imitate it the best they can.

    Would it have been common to have a sling attached to the lanyard loop on the pistol and stock, then carry the carbine by it even while 'holstered' (more like a purse)? It always strikes me as extremely awkward to have a stock-holster on one's belt or attached directly to the owner's body.

    Is that stock holster left or right-hand side carry . . . it would appear that a right-hand carry would have the long magazine protruding forward and possibly getting in the way . . .

    very informative as always. Just in case it went unnoticed: There's static starting 4:12 and a minute later the static is gone, but there's distortion instead. Might want to give your microphone a check:)

    what are the grips made of? It doesn't look like wood yet the right grip looks like it was eaten by worms

    • @gretah3969
      @gretah3969 7 лет назад +1

      Jack Mcslay They look like they might be made from ebonite, a form of hard rubber used often in that time period for parts that today would be made of some type plastic.

    • @ashleysmith3106
      @ashleysmith3106 6 лет назад

      They were often made from softened, then mold compressed sheets of cow-horn. Hence those type of grips, if not looked after, were sometimes eaten by weevils and other beetles. They also have a tendency towards cracking, splitting and delaminating
