If you've ever been to an Italian gelateria (especially in the south), you know that the experience is a little bit more than simply grabbing an ice cream cone. They craft all kinds of incredible desserts using gelato! Decadent ice cream sandwiches, "truffles" of stuffed ice cream, and Italian ice cream cakes are just a few examples.
Today, Eva shares how to make gelato at home plus a handful of our favorite gelato-based desserts. I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! Oh, and that reminds us: we've brought on a special guest to explain the technical difference between gelato and ice cream 👨🏻‍🍳

I totally need you guys to make an entire video about Pistachio. I know it's expensive and it's hard to find, especially considering the one we use, the Pistacchio di Bronte is protected and therefore extra expensive, but it's such an important ingredient, especially in Sicily. From gelato to granita, from pesto to a spread that's better than Nutella, we use it as topping and we use it as the main star of the dish and our Pistacchio verde di Bronte is one of the best pistachio varieties in the world.

I bought enough pistachios to make 2 trays of Palestinian-style baklava. It cost a veritable fortune. But they make their baklava with pistachios instead of walnuts, so I bought the more expensive pistachios.

@@tiatumin5262 I'm gonna be honest, if you're in USA there's actually a great chance you'll find genuine gelato, compared to us lowly third-world peasants.
emmymade's channel showcased TWO boxes with HUGE assortments of sorbetto and gelato flavors made by il laboratorio del gelato. The first box had 25 flavors. Later on they sent the second one with 31 flavors. No sponsorship, just her falling in love with endless flavors. (And dismissing some. To be expected, the selection is all over the place.)
She almost died with the Chocolate-Kahlúa gelato. (Kahlúa is a coffee liqueur.)
Anyways, they have a website, if you can go perhaps it'd be a good visit. I'd love to go one day but it feels more like a distant dream for me since I don't live anywhere near the damn place.
I also would like to know Eva's opinion of their stuff since I can't have any.

The six of us were raised by a single working mother who had no time to teach me, the eldest daughter, to cook so I just threw whatever we had in our bare cupboards together to feed us all. Hubby and I spent our first anniversary in Italy on a super-budget USO (US serviceman's organization) tour. Unfortunately, we were in Rome on a Tuesday when all the 'main attractions' were closed. We were very plucky though and found a nice little 'ice cream shop' (sorry, gelateria?) where we purchased two desserts that looked like American ice cream cones made with local strawberries. Great to be there in May when Roman strawberries were in season! We were being 'cheap' and not eating at the places the tour took all the American tourists and got to make many memories of foods purchased willy-nilly away from the tour group. Loved this video and the many memories it prompted.

Here in Australia we have a Gelateria which beat all the other competitors, to win the Gelato World Tour in Rimini - Italian teams came second and third (Francesco Mastroianni and Alessandro Lancierini) It is the best gelato I've ever eaten, and every time I visit Sydney I have been known to eat as many as 20 scoops of their gelato over the course of a week. My favourite flavour of theirs is their Mandorla Affogato which is the flavour that won them the world title. I am also partial to Lotus Biscoff Gelato which you'll find quite often in gelaterias here, and There is a Gelateria here in Brisbane run by a Chinese man that loved gelato so much he went and studied in Italy to learn how to make it - they often have traditionally made gelato but with Chinese inspired flavours - I love their Taro flavour, their coconut and Pandan Leaf (made with coconut milk) and their Earl Grey Tea.

Huh, interesting! Great info, esp if I ever find myself in Australia! I wonder if they do an ube flavor to go alongside the pandan, or if that would confuse people with the taro. Very cool to hear about a Chinese man drawing inspiration from all over the world and using it in gelato =) there's a small ice cream chain in Southern California (Wanderlust Creamery) that does the same, with rotating monthly flavors. I'd love to taste something like that in gelato form!

@@Senju1k13 I've never seen an ube flavour, although this is the type of place that rotates flavours a lot. Pandan and coconut milk is one they usually have and I always get it when it's there. They also often have flavours like black sesame, durian, there was a salted egg yolk flavour once that my friend raved about but we've never seen it since. They also do plenty of more standard flavours

Lemon 🍋 gelato is the best. Not to be confused with lemon sorbet. That gelato tartufo at the end was insane 🤤. The spumoni that I am used is like Neapolitan ice cream except it is with pistachio, chocolate, and a sweet cherry flavor with candied cherries 🍒; nothing like what Eva made today. But of course it looked delicious.

Hi Eva and Harper! I am from Brooklyn, NY and around here, Spomone is something a little different. My guess is it has became Americanized, and they took out the cake. tt is spelled Spumoni, and it is basically 3 types of ice cream (vanilla, chocolate, and pistachio) in one- kind of like how Breyer's sells Neapolitan ice cream. I don't think you can find this in grocery stores but it is still served in some Italian pizzerias and ice cream shops. It is usually served in a cup or on a cone, and it is not so easy to find these days. There is a famous pizzeria in Brooklyn that is known for it's pizza and spumoni called, Spumoni Gardens. It was once (maybe still) mob owned, but you didn't hear that from me. lol You may want to check it out if you ever come back to NY. I haven't been there in a couple of years, but they make good "Sicilian style" pizza, where they put the cheese first, then the sauce. I think the spumoni is better than the pizza, especially that they put pieces of pistachio in the ice cream. I may have to take a ride over there now and get me some! Ciao!

I moved to Italy and married my Italian husband. He used to take me to a place in Martina Franca called Latteria del Ringo. They had an amazing rum raisin gelato. The thing is you have to understand in Italy is that if it says it's rum raisin they literally put rum in the gelato. Most desserts have alcohol in them. Many of the gelato shops my husband would take me, when you would buy a container of gelato the gelato was put over top a very thin piece of cake that was soaked in rum. They even have a boxed cakes like Little Debbie's called Fiesta. My husband always got the orange and it outside of it was dipped in dark chocolate. Had a very strong orange flavor but the thing that overpowered it was the alcohol inside the cake. And yes, children consumed these. Since it's not a taboo for children to consume alcohol there I assume that's why they don't have the alcohol problems that we have in the US.

I'm lucky that my dad was from Sorrento, so grew up eating amazing gelato every summer that we spent there. But outside the favourites I had there, I used to visit an Italian gelato shop in Brighton on the south coast of the UK, and they used to make the most amazing pear and parmesan ice cream. Doesn't sound like it should work, but it was amazing!

Modern Gelato was invented in Paris from a Sicilian guy called “Francesco Procopio dei Coltelli” in his Café Procope in late 1600
      Search him!

That is actually a sicilian brioche, not a french one :) it's called "brioche siciliana" or "brioche col tuppo" (tuppo = the little ball on the top, literally the "chignon", in dialect, that women usually did with their hair in Sicily long time ago)

I love Italian Gelato..I am fortunate that in my local grocery store they sell gelato from Italy imported pre packaged. So I can enjoy the treat. It will never be like the real experience in Italy..but thats as close as I will be . but they do have Italian owned gelato stores in my city..! So tasty..
