The Echo Knight Optimized (Stand User: JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure): D&D 5e Character Build

  • Matt Mercer, the voice of Jotaro Kujo from the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series, created the Echo Knight within the world of Exandria for Critical Role. Here we examine how best to optimize that subclass, in what turns out to be an incredibly powerful melee build, with a ton of flexibility, tanking prowess, lockdown functionality, strong battlefield mobility, and nearly broken utility, while also forming the basis of a phenomenal Stand User.
What is a Stand? It’s a psycho-spiritual manifestation of the soul of the user, with unique supernatural abilities. It generally presents itself as a figure hovering over or near the user and possesses abilities beyond that of an ordinary human.
    Sound familiar?

Personally, I love the idea of an ancestor who is really proud of the character and just decides to come along for their adventures. Then they become the echo.

"When a creature that you can see within 5 feet of your echo moves at least 5 feet away from it, you can use your reaction to make an opportunity attack against that creature as if you were in the echo's space."
It seems like the second two bullet points of sentinal do not apply to opportunity attacks made from the echo's position.

I ran a fallen Aasimar echo knight once for a one shot. Based on Arawn, a Celtic death god. The “echos” he summoned were always a doppelgänger of the enemy; as if using their own soul to attack them. Lots of fun!

I like to go custom lineage + crusher lvl 1 to get 18 strength, and once I hit lvl 4 take Sentinel. With that combo you can use crusher to force enemies away from your allies and then with clever positioning you can force opertunity attacks and hit em with Sentinel. One of the biggest downsides of your build (until you get crusher), is that once enemies get onto your squishy allies, you can't make good use of Sentinel.

Im actually preparing to play an Echoknight/Ancestral Barbarian combo this weekend as my previous character just died last week. My flavor for the build is a magical trio of kobolds all hatched from the same egg. 3 kobolds but mechanically one creature. Like your build its mostly fighter with my starting level 14 Im doing an 11/3 split. I am using Unarmored Defense with a Shield which is giving me a 21 AC with my Con/Dex. I didnt optimize Str, allowing for my Rage to pick up the slack there.
I also took the Sentinel Feat though I had to wait for it but got the Strike of the Giant Feat thanks to my background. I choose the Hill Giant option to know things prone. Kobolds being typically the shortest race tend to like to bring things down to their level. Plus its another way to eat up enemy movement. Best of all with an Echo’s ability to travel in 3D space I might be able to knock flying enemies out of the sky, and there is no restriction on the size of the creature you can knock prone!

Got this going on in a current campaign. Playing a half orc ancestral barb, got 6 levels deep and felt out of place. I learned about echo knight and talked with my dm if we can change up how my character progressed. Since the ancestor was part of my backstory, we did 3 to barb for the path then 3 to fighter for the echo and made the echo knight my ancestral guardian. It kinda nerfed echo knight because we have him only do unarmed attacks since rp wise, he's not me. By lvl 8 we got sentinel and polearm master since my guy uses a Glaive. And lvl 9 stayed on fighter for the extra attack. Currently in the story I did a ritual with witches to learn more about my ancestor but it backfired and it changed how he looked and grew a hatred for me, I've been playing in fights without him because he would refuse to come out. We just leveled up to 10 and I'm getting the dragon mark feat for the con and the range since my ancestor doesn't want to participate.

If you want to do something different, I came to a similar type of build by wanting to create a Monk build that was strong in early-mid play.
For your race you take Hexblood, this gives you access to the Hex spell which you’ll be using to make up the bulk of early game damage.
For background I decided to be a pirate due to the subclass I would pick and to tie the race choice to sea hags. Plus I wanted Perception proficiency.
You start as a monk. If possible you’d wanna ask your DM if you could get Ki points equal to your level + WIS modifier, but this build works regardless.
You take the first 3 levels in monk, using the short sword temporarily. You take the Way of the Astral Self subclass for astral tentacle arms that can punch.
At level 4 you take a half feat to bring your DEX to an 18.
At level 5 you get extra attack and now do 4 attacks in a round. With hex up you should be doing respectable damage still when you go all in.
At level 6 you multiclass fighter, pick up the unarmed fighting style since monks don’t get their damage dice to 1d8 till 11th level and this works faster.
At level 7 you get Action Surge and you now can do [(8d8 + 32) + 8d6] damage against a single target you don’t like.
At level 8 you pick up the Echo Knight subclass and now you can do 10 attacks on an action surge between you and your echo.
It was at that point when I realized that I had basically accidentally created a JoJo Stan.

@@cmccbuilds8229 well, the second bullet point would never come up while using your echo because it states that "Creatures provoke opportunity attacks from /you/ even if they take the Disengage action before leaving /your/ reach."
And Manifest Echo states "When a creature that you can see within 5 feet of your /echo/ moves at least 5 feet away from /it/, you can use your reaction to make an opportunity attack against that creature /as if/ you were in the echo's space."
Basically creatures can disengage from your Echo without issue.
Now the third bullet, technically works but not when your Echo is so far away.
It states: "When a creature within 5 feet of /you/ makes an attack against a target other than you (and that target doesn't have this feat), you can use your reaction to make a melee weapon attack against the attacking creature."
Bottom line is that because the Manifest Echo implies that You and your echo occupy separate spaces, most useful Sentinel features won't come up.

      @cmccbuilds8229  Год назад +1

This is incorrect. When someone tries to move past the echo, you can make an opportunity attack and lock them down. That’s the key feature of the feat for this build. They can only attack your echo and can’t move past to attack anyone else.
