This is the dog's time to see, hear, and yes, sniff that world! Yes, u r alpha, but a kindness would be to let your dog enjoy her world and walk-stroll, sniff.

    In order not to feel guilty about restricting a pulling dog, it can be good to have a goal in mind, like a space where the dog can walk freely and meet with other dogs. So that there he/she can give into its instincts and need for socialization and other things.

      @@Patti-1962 when you take that approach, it is important to have clear in your mind WHERE these freedoms are permitted. As Rajiv said, allowing the dog the freedom to take away your leadership, is a bad idea. So you need to be certain of the situations you are in and you may need to ensure exercise by brisker walking between bits of free sniffing.

    I agree with all of this, but I think the dog should have a place and a pause in the walk at their destination to sniff...picking up a scent and sniffing it is like doggie Social Media, they sniff and 'like' to see who has been there before, check out their 'profile'...and sometimes leave a 'comment' 😄

    I usually love your homemaking videos, this one is very different and unexpected. Most canine behavioralists these days agree that the 'wolf pack' approach is inapplicable and outdated. I don't think its necessary to continually assert dominance over dogs. Dogs aren't confused about who is in charge, no creature who shits and eats on someone else's schedule thinks they are in charge. There are so many other, more compassionate, approaches to connect with and live peacefully alongside dogs. Yes, dogs are animals... but so are we! We communicate differently! It takes time and patience and reflection to get to know and understand a dog.

    If you buy into the whole alpha-beta theory, you will get a...dog. If you treat your dog's needs gently, caringly like a parent, you will get undying loyalty and complete obedience - even above natural animalistic instinct because the dog will feel like (and will actually be) family.

      I agree with you. The alpha dog theory was debunked by the researcher who coined it. He regretted that he ever wrote about it, because by the time he realized that he was wrong, the whole world had accepted it already, and even used it for dog training. Someone uploaded the video on youtube, where he explains this. Based on my research, modern dog psychology completely refutes this theory and training "technique" as well. In the official German and Austrian dog training license, they warn against this type of "training", as well.

    You made some really good points. I learned a lot. The only thing that I would say is a little different between me and my dog is that I do let him in front of me a lot however, I do not let him pull me or have control. He knows when he’s in front of me I am still in control. That is very important and must be something the dog is taught.. learns and remembers. I know this is a fact because he was recently attacked when we were out and now whenever we go by that area he always wants to go in front and gently pull me past that area. So this tells me that he is being very respectful when he’s in front of me, however, in this particular area, where he was attacked, which is very understandable, he wants to be in control and I let him because I want him to know that I understand And support him. We have a very close relationship. He has learned lots of words from me over the years and so I can actually communicate with him very well, and I pretend that I understand what he wants too - although that’s not usually the case. As far as going through the door, when we leave for a walk, which we take about three or four times a day, he is always anxious to get through that door first. Also, when I put the leash on him, he never settles down. So your advice on these things was invaluable, and I will immediately start implementing your advice. Thanks and keep up the great work. By the way, everybody loves the name I gave my dog. His name is Teddy Bear. P.S. this is a very shareable video, and I shared it with tons of people.

    it's always great when people remember that when we walk a dog our job is to keep them safe AND to keep others around us safe too. But... I don't think it makes sense to give dog walking advice from someone who doesn't have a dog, and a lot of the theory here isn't in line with modern understandings of how dogs minds and emotions work (I say this having done a degree in animal behaviour). I think if you're talking about 'controlling when they pee and poo' and 'controlling when they sniff' you need to ask yourself, who are you serving when you want that kind of control and why are you trying to stop them doing these basic natural things when they want to? Dogs live in our world and have very little autonomy to make choices for themselves, so preventing them from things like choosing when to potty and sniff is pretty harsh. I know this is all really well intentioned, and it's another charming video with some good pointers, but it's not safe or fair to give direction on something one doesn't actually have enough experience to speak about, when it connects to the welfare of an animal.

Maybe interact with the poor dog more than just trying to lead. dogs are concious beings - not just animals as you put it rajiv. you’re engrossed in some fantasy world of your own. Disagree in this way: Gentleness & more forms of communication are needed when a shift in attention or behavior is needed. A few simple, consistent words of explanation while Gently guiding a dog to shift its attention &/or behavior are appropriate & work beautifully, not yanking or tugging. - The latter only sometimes needed in emergencies when a firm pull keeps a dog from darting into danger or causing it. Dogs learn quickly & most attentively, most keenly from consistent, Gentle Communication. (I also believe Children will yank & tug, inevitably ~ as their interests too will sometimes captivate them. For the same reasons I believe children should not be yanked - in response or otherwise. The only exception, here as well, to prevent a harmful emergency.)
    I agree dogs assess who is in charge & when there is a confident leader, they can relax, rather than needing to become the leader.
    Yet there are many ways to communicate being calmly aware & managing “the scene”. I appreciate that you named so many (starting new actions from calm; leading steps through doorways; “Checking in” with the pup throughout, etc.).
    My concern is too many people get “drunk” with aiming to dominate others. PEOPLE need the emphasis on Training ourselves to find gentle solutions!
    I don’t have concerns about you, Rajiv. You’re great & you put care into life. I just disagree with you on this point (yanking) & fear the way some will interpret how to give a dog confidence in us & to enjoy experiencing the dog’s spirit.
    Lastly, dogs give us all so much. I think there’s great joy & gifts for all parties in letting human agendas support dogs having their own exploratory time and pace as often as possible!
    So glad you’re alive, Rajiv, & love your caring & sharing!! Thank you! & Thanks to patient, sweet Prince. Onward

      She is easy, but not as well behaved as your Prince

    A 6 ft leash is a normal length of leash, the looped end held lightly in the right hand, the leash draped across your body, with the dog on the left side, your left hand holding the leash, your arm relaxed by your side. That’s the way vets and trainers walk dogs. Leather leashes are so much more comfortable than nylon ones, and they don’t shred your palm if the dog pulls suddenly. There were great tips here! Especially that your dog is calm when you put the leash on.

    Super informative video. You provided such great education for us all and reminded us of things we may not have thought of or needed to be needed to be reminded of. The most important thing is that of us being the one responsible for knowing a dog and their behavior, we are the one's responsible for this animal if they bite or hurt someone. I just sat for a beautiful Labradoodle, and this info would have really helped us both the 3 days I had her.

    Gosh, these things are SO important. I had the chance to care for a senior dog with lots of querks (some mobility issues, he was obese, he had asthma...) and I've never even had a dog before. IMAGINE THE DISASTER THAT WAS. The dog was bigger than me, so he DEFINITELY had in mind that he was in charge. GOD was I embarrassed when I walked that dog for the week I had to take care of him. Needless to say, we didn't spend that much time together (because of his mobility issues, it became apparent that he couldn't live in an apartment in the 2nd floor with no elevator, so he was moved to a house with a yard. I'm sure his quality of life was 100% better after that). If I had at least half of the information you said on this video maybe that experience wouldn't be as exausting for the both of us

I have a happy life, yet quite demanding, always running after the next thing to be done at work and at home. Lots of great discussion in comment section. Want to add a comment of concern. I often see owners walking their dog on very hot days. The pavement can be incredibly hot potentially burning the dog’s pads. That hot pavement also reflects back up to the dog and can cause heat stroke especially for small breeds that are close to the reflected heat and breeds with a short nose that lessens their ability to self cool. Bottom line….the cool of early morning or evening for a walk during hot weather may be more comfortable and safer for your dog.

    I absolutely ❤ the video! Rajeev picks such interesting things to talk about. But, I would never keep a dog unless I have a largish property with a garden, backyard, front yard - the works. I live in a country (INDIA) where there is very little concept of personal space. We barely have enough for humans in a regular city apartment. Inflicting that sense of cramped space on a dog (pack animal) is unimaginable to me.

      Actually, that's the one thing I'd like to add to this video-it's that sniffing IS the point of the walk for our dogs :) They experience the majority of their world through smells, and when they're sniffing (usually other dogs' pees), they're picking up on stimulating messages left in the urine. Dogs urinate on walks to leave messages for each other, even communicating through their hormones whether they were having a good time or not. It's amazing! So to deprive our dogs of sniffing is to make them miss out on the abundance of stimulation that truly makes the walk enjoyable for them. It's like they're reading their "pee-mails" for the day! xD

    • @ritaamor283
      @ritaamor283 9 месяцев назад +3

      @@GirlandTheWordsame, I was going to comment on that too. Although is good to have an established routine and rhythm with your dog, sniffing is so IMPORTANT. It’s their tv, their news, if you don’t let your dog sniff on a walk then you might as well teach him to use the toilet. Dogs needs stimulation, that’s the point of the walk, not just to do their necessities, so they can be a satisfied dog. I see a lot dogs that are very well behaved and trained but are miserable. From my long experience with dogs, also, Prince wasn’t in a relaxed state while Rajiv was talking to us seated.he was obedient, but not content and relaxed. It is important to teach your dog to relax. To enjoy the surrounding a bit. That comes from trusting the owner and not just be trained to stand still.

    • @kaymgee08
      @kaymgee08 9 месяцев назад +7

      So true - it's not just about exercise . This seems too much about control and not about letting the dog enjoy the walk. I speak as someone who had dogs for 15 years and then spent another 15 looking after other dogs.@@GirlandTheWord

    • @hcisyourfiend
      @hcisyourfiend 9 месяцев назад +3

      @@GirlandTheWord 💯 it is all about enrichment. The walk is for the dog, not for me. The leash is simply to keep him out of danger. A dog who is mentally stimulated during a walk will be much more tired, and fulfilled, when they get home 🥰

    Love you, love your videos, love the subjects you choose. Interesting video. Prince is adorable and seems like the ideal well-behaved boy to highlight your walking tips. It would have been nice to see you spend just one moment talking about being a responsible dog owner and picking up after your dog. I didn't see you carrying any waste bags or a bag container attached to Prince's leash. You strike me as someone who is ultra-considerate, so you likely didn't think you needed to state the obvious or perhaps NYC has accommodations for such canine needs. Here in MD, judging from the comments on my neighborhood message board, it's a sticky/stinky topic.
