      @Eric Lee @Eric Lee She did not have it easy. Her father abused her, (and gave the Karolyi's permission to abuse her) stole her money, and put a hit on her coach's life. She was made to compete when she was broken, and then discarded when she couldn't perform. Just because she wasn't molested doesn't mean she had it easy. Dominique had a very traumatic childhood

    It's sad that shortly after this, they imposed the age restrictions. The age restrictions should be lifted - if they are talented enough to compete at that level, age shouldn't matter.

    • @capscoach
      @capscoach 9 лет назад +30

      Definitely not... that much hard impact on such a young body has terrible consequences later on in life... and a 14 year old is too young for the emotional pressure of something like the Olympics.... gymnastics has traditionally done a terrible job of protecting their children... they need to be better

    • @LucyGar23
      @LucyGar23 8 лет назад +12

      I think the age is appropriate. I mean I don't wan to see a 12,13 year loose their childhood cause they are training so much.. even Dominique and Tara Lipkinski has said they were to young to compete at that level.

    • @Chels-fz5uq
      @Chels-fz5uq 6 лет назад +11

      Actually, most girls that are Olympic potentials are already training high numbers at that age anyway, and with the age restriction they have to do that for an even longer period to try for the Olympics four years later when they're older. Mentally I get the age restriction, but on they physical side of things, it forces another four or more years of training onto someone who's already training at a very demanding level.

    • @neversaygoodluck
      @neversaygoodluck 6 лет назад +15

      With the age restrictions you can actually pace a gymnast. The young ones with Olympic potential, doing high levels of gymnastics now usually don't make it to 16 because they peak too early or get injured(keep in mind that the level of difficulty has gone up since 1995 as well). But when you pace yourself you end up with gymnasts like Aly and Simone, neither of which were stars when they were juniors, but they were paced perfectly, and became waaayyy stronger than they could have ever been as Jr's. Like the skills a 13 year old would need to beat those 2 wouldn't even be safe for most girls.

    • @easytoslip
      @easytoslip 5 лет назад +3

      watch juniors if you want to see the best 14 year olds still, super easy to catch juniors' big meets. I agree the age restriction is a good thing, keep the younger teens from too much pressure.

    The story about her & her sister that was adopted, omg! That about made me cry. Such an uplifting story about family & love between the two sisters was instant. After reading everything I can understand why Moceanu felt the way she did. I had many football & baseball coaches that were just like Bella.
    Hard on you because they don’t know any other way to be. I played in games with broken fingers, broken ankle, fractures on my tibias & I did if for my teammates. But I’ll be honest with anyone who reads this, there was no better feeling in the world to walk up to the huddle & your guys look at you like “we know you can pull this off for us.” & then throw a TD pass or even better a game winning TD pass. Unfortunately I worked full time my junior year of high school & was unable to play due to a TBI my senior year, ending both my football & baseball careers.
    So I reflect now on those coaches that were toughest on me & see why they were that way. I hope & pray that all of our Olympic athletes will understand what makes them special & continue to inspire. I hope they all find happiness after their careers are over.

How disgusting to talk about her in this way as if she's a thing and not a person. Winning gold isn't everything. She's an amazing athlete. One competition on a certain day doesn't define how good you are. Any other day she could easily have won. Winning doesn't make you more or less of a person. So aggravating that I had to grow up with adults promoting behavior like this to "inspire" us.

    i think shes just bitter more than anything else... her gymnastics career basically ended after the 1996 olympics.. unlike Shannon Miller or Dominique Dawes, or Keri Strug as she aged she couldnt keep up with other gymnasts.. 1996 was basically the best her career ever got.. So she made everyone around her villains who destroyed her life.. Keri was with Bela for years, even went to other gyms and still went back to him, happily.. Kim went back to him on her own for help.. Mary Lou and Nadia also had nice things to say about him.. if he was such an abusive tyrant why did everyone else like being trained under him.. and clearly he wasnt a heartless jerk when Keri got hurt you could see how much it affected him..As for Marta she's coached tons of girls including the last gymnastics team from 2016 and those girls had nothing but positive things to say.. So maybe Dominique's dad was a tyrant and maybe he did abuse her.. thats on her parents.. but to talk negatively about 2 peoplewho did their best to coach you and who are beloved by everyone else theyve coached is BS.

      Soooo many girls from the Romanian team have spoken out about their abusive behavior YEARS ago, and well as former staff in Romania. And unfortunately, thanks to the Nassar scandal gymnasts are less scared of speaking out now about the toxic environment at the ranch, and how it was one of the reasons "kind" Larry was able to slip through the cracks. Even Simone's coach has spoken out about Simone was emotionally mistreated by Marta. Also just because a gymnast had a good experience doesn't make another persons experience invalid. But it's not surprising people come out after their career is over, especially prior to the shakeup at USAG. Marta could cut you, and the USAG would try and silence or discredit you. AND they had even had lawsuits filed against them in recent years that are only coming to light now.

      Objectively you could say noone will ever know if Bela was just a good actor appearing to care about his gymnasts, or if Domi 'overreacted;' but when it's between a grown man and a 14 year old girl, it's kind of a no-brainer in my book. If she *says* she was all torn up from feeling emotionally mistreated to the point she had to divorce her parents and her coaches, that's impossible to dispute if you ask me. Noone wants to go through something like that and if she were actually bitter, she wouldn't have huge terrified eyes while it happened, she'd look angry. So yeah, no.
      Also it's curious to me that so many men defend other men when smaller younger women feel attacked and mistreated by them, it's such an incredibly common human theme. If you want to be a good man your job is to be a fierce gentleman and protect those you say you care about, not to exploit and mistreat them emotionally and ignore when they have physical pain so you can win golds.
      Domi wrote that she craved Bela's affection and approval so badly she hurt all the time. When she finally reached the goal Bela and her father pushed her towards for so many years here's what happened: Bela completely ignored her and took off, leaving her without a coach and without any nod of approval. Her dad took all her money and ignored her requests to know what was being done with it, and when she finally found out by hiring a lawyer the money was pretty much gone.
      People who side with Bela and Domi's dad in this case either don't know the full story or believe it's still ok to exploit and abuse women. Which obviously it isn't.
