Howard has OCD and deals with it by meditating. You think he'd be more respectful understanding how tough intrusive thoughts can be. Instead he's insulting Wesley. At the end of the interview he says "Say hi to your demon for me." How could he say something so disrespectful to someone who's delt with so much?
Because Howard on the radio is a character. A demonic entity himself. He embedded it everyday, to be as cruel, shallow and hubristic as possible for the sake of viewership. The sad and unfortunate reality is this though: Howard had the ability to leave his demons in that studio when he hung up his earphones every day... Wesley did not. Wesley carried that energy with him... everywhere. There was no catharsis for Mr. Willis, and Howard (the character), relished gleefully with Wesley's fear and resentment. It was a different time. Empathy was seen as weakness. Thank goodness that now-a-days we as a species know better... and we all realize how awful this form of exploitation was.
Unfortunately a lot of stigma and prejudice is still held against those individuals (like Wesley) living with severe forms of mental illness, whether it be bipolar, scizhophrenia, PTSD, DID, personality disorders, etc. People still have a very warped thinking of what schizophrenia is(they think its people hearing voices, speaking to invisible people, and being homicidal maniacs).
