I own the double barrel. I really enjoy the easy of use. The laser smoke extraction is a big plus too. Plus, watching the dust go through the clear tubes is definitely satisfying!
I'm so excited for this video..thanks HD! I have a the double barrel unit with my Dust Gorilla Pro 5hp and I ran into the same issues you mentioned. I talked to the maker and give him the same feedback you mentioned. He is going to send me out a new version to test for him, but short term I did the same as use...just use the shortest brush and it works great! One other thing I like the double barrel is that the dust boot hose attachment is on the top of the unit as I use a 4" hose...it keeps the hose out of the way which I love. Your review is 100% right on with that unit! The fit and finish is amazing. The only reason I wouldn't buy it again would be to just try out one of the other two you were showing off.
Great video. Thanks. I use a Pwncnc v10 4”. It works great but is limited in how far up the spindle it can be set. I will be removing the nubs that limit that travel. IMO, including the brush position adjustment would be useful information.
Yep! Its hard to talk about where to mount the spindle on the Z as well as where to mount the boot- as there are a lot of different bit lengths and materials.
Funny story about crud collection. Last year I picked up a few pallets of scrap material from a local aerospace company. No idea what some of them were at the time, other than ducting length and some parts that looked like ball-mounted bendy arms. I was more interested in the ducting for runners to be heat-treating furnace and forgot about the other stuff. Come to find out, two pallets were 4" metal ducting runners, clamps, and all sizes of Loc-Line hoses with attachments. Score!! Getting it routed for the new CNC adoption. 😁
The swingers hinge pin is designed to be easily pulled out and the entire front section can be removed. That solved the issue for me with zero axis on bottom left and changing bits. Although changing bits with spanners can still be a bit challenging compared to static z height boots. I use the longer bristles on mine think 3” or maybe 3.5” with a cheapo harbor freight dust collector and I have better results than you did in video. I have mine setup that 4” hose goes directly on the boot.
I have pwncnc z independent v9 and it’s excellent for a z independent. The double barrel is my go to. I have had it for over a year and have absolutely no need to change. I also just got the Jtech 24 watt laser and this double barrel is flawless for fumes extraction
Loved this video... We have put a lot of hard hours into The Swinger and was hoping you were going to mention the opening direction. That has been our only issue. It is a workhorse.
I find my toughest time with dust collection is when profiling along the edge of a piece of stock. Chips just tend to fly out the side since they’re not contained in a pocket or cavity from the cut.
I use the Sweepy from Carbide 3D on my Shapeoko. I think it would work on any machine though. I have the regular and the deep sweep attachments and prefer the deep one as the air path is smoother and therefore quieter. Popping the attachment off to do bit changes is easy and the whole thing is clear. It does hang off the front, I like the design of the double barrel and may consider that one.
Thanks for this thorough review! I have to disagree with the statement about how the Z-independent is for "beginners." I just can't see any correlation with, or what you mean by, that statement? People have to get over the fact that not all woodworking projects only use 3/4" thick material with shallow, 2 dimensional, carvings. I regularly design projects that are 3D carvings that purposely get into 2-3 inches tall. The 1F Z-independent dust boot bracket is an absolutely brilliant idea, and was one of the selling points for me when purchasing the machine. I was so frustrated with the brush strips getting destroyed by my bits as the Z-axis moves along with the boot. The only thing I am now frustrated with is 1F refusal to fix the clearance issue with their Z slider when using a spindle and the design of their stock boot itself severely restricting air flow as it makes a sharp angle where the hose connects, thus causing a massive drop in volumetric area. And, then there's my overall dream for some day having a Z-independent boot that allows a 4-inch hose.
I've used these two and they haven't broken so they get four stars versus this one is new but I like how it feels means it has five stars is a horrible method of evaluation.
Thanks for doing this. I have a big problem with my current boot as it isn’t long enough for my set up. It is even worse when I use the bowl cut Jenny as the shank is to long. I’ve mentioned this to Cody and he offered to cut it down or when I order my next one he will shorten it then. Very cool but I need something different so the timing is perfect
@@HamiltonDilbeck I think my bowl cut Jenny is like 1/2” longer that the DT Jenny and since cuts like a beast but sticks out below my boot, I have a mess afterwards.
i think it would be easy for makers to put a small slot in the boot with a sliding cover to regulate how much suction you get, it would avoid bristles being sucked up.i agree there isnt a single boot that covers all situations.
@@HamiltonDilbeck sorry, it's late & i'm tired. I'm looking at buying an Elite & laser from Onefinity shortly. can the laser be mounted at the same time as a dust boot?
The only one that I reviewed that can do that is the Double Barrel (the orange one) and its meant to do both dust and fume extraction with its different parts.
I ended up just designing and 3d printing my own because there are precious few 4" dust collector options and all of them appear to be made by people with no concept of fluid dynamics. Also... it costs about $4 in plastic to print any of these, charging $100+ is criminal.
Love the Raptor by SolaFiideDesignsKC. I set by bits to protrude about 1/8” beyond the bristle to get complete coverage and suction from my DC. Being able to remove the front half to change bits is great and doesn’t interfere with the machine and I’ve also removed the front half brush in order to capture video without losing any suction.
I purchased the double barrel and the maker was INCREDIBLE! He worked with me on custom color, he was super responsive and amazing to work with.
Agreed!

what size extractor are you using?

Awesome! Good to know that its doing good with fume extraction as thats something I didn't get to test out
Awesome informative video thanks for doing the video Hamilton.
Cheers Mark

Agreed! and on certain woods it creates long strands that are hard to collect with smaller diameter hoses
Great Video Hamilton. A right swing swinger is coming this week!!!
Heck yeah! You're the man!

Nice! I haven't tried that one, but glad its working for you! Also the double barrel rocks!
I have had a few ideas similar to what you are suggesting as well as couple other upgrades but I need to get myself a spindle first I think.
Ohh I'm excited to see what you come up with!

I think someone is coming out with one that uses a 4" hose! Thanks for the comment, it will help people figure out what is best for them!
Awesome. I have the raptor on my 5 Pro and it does a great job
It really is great!
Thanks for this Hamilton... good stuff Brother.
Thanks!

Great job testing Hamilton!
You the man, Ryan!
Great Job! Very well done comparison.
Thanks!
Yeah, 3D printing has allowed so many people to make the tools they want versus just getting what is out there.

Might be a dumb question but do you have links to those boots ?
Very informative.
Thanks!

Ah thats a good idea!
Question - at minute 11 you have this cloth on the table and it seem to be holding down the wood..what's that all about?
Thats just black paper to show the mdf chips off better that didn't get picked up! Just taped down to the bed and then the mdf was nailed through it!
the ivac system is no doubt, an incredible system, but the price, to outfit your whole shop, would cost more than the dust collection system itself.
how does using a Laser mount with a fitted dust boot?
I don't understand your question.
@@HamiltonDilbeck sorry, it's late & i'm tired. I'm looking at buying an Elite & laser from Onefinity shortly. can the laser be mounted at the same time as a dust boot?

@@HamiltonDilbeck thanks
Let's talk about that black 'paper' on your machine. Is that somehow involved in a vacuum system?
Nah it's just paper to show the dust that's not getting collected! Just some double sided tape holding it down!
Is there a good 3d printed option?
I bet so! I don't have a 3d printer, so I haven't checked any of those out!
Got any links for the boots?.
updated in the description!

I disagree with the cost to produce these- but I am a huge fan of designing things to meet your own needs!

Huge thanks for asking, they are now in the description of the video. Thanks!
