My first DNA video has gotten 250,000 views and over 2000 comments. After many requests to do an update, this is the result. Warning: This is a long video, probably too long! But I've organized it in 3 separate sections, which can be watched in any order as stand-alone "chapters." And if you're looking to streamline your viewing experience, here's a tip: The most interesting chapter is the slide show on my dad's life, which starts at 10:30.

Jacqueline C Robinson maybe since the DNA research is based on science and not the color of one’s skin, the results would be similar. This is a relatively young field of research and there is much to learn. I’ve no doubt that will happen.

So I get to the part of your story where your dad is in the picture with President Carter. He looked familiar to me and in my head I'm thinking, ' Rowen...Rowen...ooooh! His dad is Carl Rowen!' I always enjoyed reading his articles in the Washington Post or watching his interviews! No wonder you are so easy to listen to! I watched both of your videos tonight. Jeff, you are great at connecting family, history, and human circumstances. From the story about your dad's family, growing up poor much the way both of my parents did, our struggle for progress is a long one. All the more reason to make it easier to vote and easier to go to college; fully fund education for all levels of learning, and make sure every citizen votes. Progress is slow, but inevitable, and it's like we take one step back, then two steps forward. Many thanks for the video!

As I young boy growing up in VA, I spent many afternoons and years listening and learning from his debates on Agronsky & Company, and loving when he would go toe-to-toe with James J. Kilpatrick! Mr. Rowan, erudite indeed! I've viewed both of your video's. Well done sir. Your family pictures and slides are wonderful and true gems for the family. Your narrative on your family was exceptionally delivered, a true storyteller and teacher. The DNA segments and subsequent research results and comparisons are equally captivating. In so far as slavery, truly abhorrent choice and condition practiced in every continent, region and many peoples through the millennia that I believe predates the Mesopotamians. Every bit of these two videos is fundamental for the continued need and promotion of education. I too have my Miss Bessie! Good job on the editing too. Loved the hats! I believe you to be a good human. Thank you for your efforts.
It's amazing how someone can break down the disparities of slavery in a way an 8 year old would be able to understand it and yet people still came away with the wrong message🤦🏾♀️
It's the guilt I think. I'm Jewish and I'd be damned if people came to my people like that about the holocaust...keep your history alive ma'am

Wow. Your family's history is so inspiring, especially to me as an African American also from the South. Good to hear stories of black people who were able to overcome so much adversity. Once he was able to get an education, all the pieces just starting falling into place. Thank God for Ms. Bessie who immediately saw your father's potential. She ignited his spark. We need more people like her in our community. So many kids out there have "the spark," too, we just need to help them ignite it.

@@JeffRowan10s Maybe, but I think that it definitely has complementary role to the first one. Whether deliberately or not your story and your story telling skills have managed to decrease the main focus of the video, which is to show the DNA results, in favour of your story. A great lesson in history, ethics, education and the value of human interpersonal relationship.

Beautifully spoken with such attention to detail. A lasting tribute to Miss Bessie generations into the future as her perceptive singling out of at the time, an undetermined talent in her midst led to greatness and an outstanding career. As a Jewish person, I appreciate how the intervention of a kindly philanthropic Jewish individual created the platform for your Father and Miss Bessie to interact. Far to often Jews and African Americans are depicted and vilified as enemies when in fact, historically we have much more in common as the forces of anti semitism and "Afrophobia" would have us believe. Thank you for your thoughtful sharing, it's a story I'll remember.
I don't know how or why your video came up in my feed. But, I watched the first one and then up came the second one. I looked at it and said 43 minutes, I really don't have time to do that right now. But I was really interested. So, I took the time to do it and I'm so glad I did. What an amazing story about your dad (And you're quite the story teller by the way). I have my own thoughts about the whole DNA testing issue. But, that's not for here. It's kind of irrelevant to this story. I am so glad I took the time to watch this. It really set the tone for my day. I just couldn't quit smiling. It was just a really great story. And, the fact that it's true and the way it all unfolded for your dad, because he was willing, again is just amazing.

Sir, you are a great person. I love learning new things and you have taught me well. You father was a great man also. I am 63 and have told my children and grandchildren alot of what you have said. All of my grandchildren are homeschooled I wish you would do a teaching video on the history of the 60's and 70's so they could learn this from someone who has "been" there. This was just BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!! MOST Americans who have lived in the USA & even Canada for any length of time will find that most of us are MUTS! Rejoice & enjoy it! We have so much MORE to share with the world because of it! I’m LDS & have learned so much from that experience & tradition. They now know that at least 110 tribes here in the USA & extending into Canada have Israeli DNA. Glad to meet you fellow Israeli, & SHALOM! We are all Americans here both in spite of AND because of our differences. I’m Scottish, German, Mohawk & Ojibway & these tribes are on the Israeli list with the 3 largest Ojibwa, Cherokee & Navaho! Mr.Rowen, I took the opportunity to watch both videos in entirety. The first video was interesting and beautiful. You got my attention because looking like someone other than a black man you embarrassed it first; this showed a love of self to me. Some people love to reflect on their Indian,white,etc. However, the pride you expressed in lovingly hugging your whole being was a beautiful thing to watch ; it showed you were mentally healthy as a human being with great awareness of all that you are. I loved hearing you speak about your family, particularly your father; I could feel the love,respect and pride as you spoke about his life and achievements. The atrocities of slavery were much greater than most have been told but, more important; our ancestors survived we are the living proof of this. Much honor and respect to you for sharing your story with such care and love.

I preferred not to do a pick- and -mix, simply because I was hooked from the get go. MSM really can't compete with some of you guys, you really nail it. I found the entire presentation fascinating, from the family photos to the vignette on black slavery. Your own family history, including the eponymous Miss Bessie, and your father's remarkable story, as a genuinely one that should go down in the annals of 20th Century history, particularly in association with Kennedy, as well as the black struggle, which figured so prominently at the time. The DNA results served as the scaffolding, for the entire narrative. It was interesting too that you took the three DNA kits. That provided much insight into how these things work. Thanks so much for all your hard work and professionalism.
Fascinating discussion on your the DNA videos. You enriched my historical education on the nuances of the slave trade, I especially appreciated you sharing your family's story. I think more is accomplished toward reconciliation and understanding between different group with a story than with any form of debate.

It is amazing the interest, caring, investment, means, and encouragement given at pivotal times to benefit other persons' lives yield such wonderful situations never thought possible. No one should think dreams are not achievable.and or
Challenges are many often times, but. The journeys twist and turn, ever onward. At the end of this life, what legacy a person leaves behind is so important, especially when done with virtues (integrity, honesty, generosity, kindness, diligence) that are the best to emulate. I have been so blessed by people like that, and find such contentment to do likewise. / Thankyou for sharing accounts of Ms Bessie, your family and your Dad.

Mr. Rowan, I stumbled upon your first video this morning and found it quite interesting to say the least. I immediately followed the link you provided to the second and just finished watching it. Without focusing on any one part of either I must say you have presented two outstanding videos. Initially I believe what caught my interest was the comparison results you had found between the two companies. As I listened to your story I lost some of the interest in the comparison results and became much more interested in the contents of your story. It is truly a remarkable story of your families history and you did a very remarkable job in presenting it. Certainly the results and comparisons have given me a better perspective as to my own DNA testing and the need for more than one opinion. Thank you for sharing your story.

My older brother on my mother's side is 94% African according to Ancestry DNA. My mother's side of the family look like Africans, so his test confirm my perception of them. They are from Mississippi.

Jeff, thanks so much for your work. I watched both of your ancestry videos tonight and am very impressed with the work of your father and your own. I was also fascinated by your statements made on Kamala Harris and other Africans who advanced the African-American cause. Would love for you to recommend some resources to read more about the ancestry of Malcolm X, Frederick Douglass, Langston Hughes, and others. I've read Langston Hughes' poetry in school but never knew he was biracial.

I thought I made a comment earlier but I don’t see it so I will make it again. I totally love the way you engage your audience in telling a story. A real gift. I especially love the story about your father. So inspiring! Many of us take education for granted but when you are denied it you learn to appreciate its power to open doors of opportunity. I also like the ending about the black community. A little known fact about the white community is that many white people who have southern roots have at least some African Ancestry. The percentage is about 12% which is a pretty high number. We are all more connected than we think.
Renee Neilson people are just people, too bad some just don’t get it. Educated more opportunities, your talents help mankind, non educated you work harder for less pay. But your skills help mankind and where would we be without essential workers, they balance out life for us all so they should be appreciated too. Live your best life and be nice to others is what I say.
