They need to move faster. Currently they are protected by Indian govt contracts and R&D funds and being a monopoly in the aviation sector. But if they had to compete globally on their own, they would be hard pressed. They need to step up fast.
Wonderful episode, Nitinji! Coming to the export part, I firmly feel that the Tejas has to stabilize and mature as a platform in the IAF first, with respect to its avionics , engine and weapons systems, before we venture for exports. What is interesting is the perception of third countries regarding the IAFs own reluctant acceptance of the Tejas as a viable fighter aircraft and secondly, HAL's production and technological capacity to cater to export orders when internal (read: IAF) demand can be barely met. In my view, HAL has not only to overcome these perceptions but also assure it's potential customers about its existing capabilities and future plans.

HAL should also come up with a commercial sister concern that sells out merchandise stuffs like miniature toys, caps , T shirts etc. Set up Museums etc to generate revenue that can be pumped into its RnD and Production initiatives. It could tie up with IIT and NID to to train young minds in industrial design that caters specifically to defence sector.

What resurgence lol? Its like patting your own back. We are still not able to productionize a strong 4 + gen fighter jet (mk 2). 4.5 gen AMCA 1's existence is still some ink and paper. This is basically copium. Sell off HAL to a private buisnessman and see the dramatic returns in under 5 years.
Its officially out. Its engine failure thus now a team from GE already/will come to find out what wrong with the engine but i think even if they already find out ,just not going to be made public. These engine are not fully design for humid climate what i heard but i don't claim that the problem.
