NPD Road: Critical Connectivity To China, Pakistan Himalayan Fronts In Ladakh

- In 'The Himalayan Frontier', Part IV, we complete our journey to Leh on the strategic third, alternate axis-the Darcha-Padam-Nimu (NPD) Road, which we started in episode III. The route provides critical connectivity for defence logistics to and civilian development around the Northern China-occupied Tibet border or Line of Actual Control (LAC), the Line of Control (LoC), and the Actual Ground Position Line (AGPL) in Siachen with Pakistan. It is shielded from both the India-China border and the frontier with Pakistan, unlike the other two axes. A StratNews Global team of Amitabh P. Revi, Rohit Pandita, and Karan Marwaha travels during the fourth winter of India's forward deployment post Xi Jinping's aggression that led to the deadly Galwan clashes in 2020. The freezing temperatures highlight one of the several challenges the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) faces in recce-ing, tracing, drilling through the mighty ranges, and building black-top roads on this route. India's infrastructure development has seen a sustained thrust, especially after the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) salami-slicing tactics in border areas. In part II of this series, the Indian Army Chief, General Manoj Pande told StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale in an exclusive interview, that talks with China are continuing at both military and diplomatic levels but India is maintaining a robust posture along the LAC. Northern Army Commander Lt Gen. Upendra Dwivedi also told Nitin Gokhale in Part I, that the “situation is stable but sensitive and not normal”.
This series continues with an interview of Lt Gen Raghu Srinivasan, the Director General, BRO at Chiling near Leh, ground reports that document the consistent infrastructure push in road connectivity and air bridges, and capture on camera how the Indian Army, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), and the Indian Air Force’s women, men and machines are honing their all-weather readiness during another winter, against the two-front threat from China and Pakistan.

I must say i am really grateful for this episode as we ladakhis have been dreaming of NPD since very long .... I salute to BRO and respect to all those outsource migrant labourer mostly from Dumka Jharkhand survive and work in such adverse condition.... altitude , weather , dust , minimum resources, oxygen , food , clothing and amount of risk working in digging mountains. THE WORK FORCE is real UNSUNG HEROES ...HATS OFF TO THEM who surive and laid their life
Looking at the developments in border infrastructure, hats off to BRO and also the political dispensation that drives BRO's activities. I have personally witnessed army, BRO personnel and local contract labour working in blowing snow in Ladakh at heights where I could barely breathe. My sincere thanks and pranams to these unsung heroes.
thanks for sharing @chilarai1
Once again, a captivating, enthralling account of the skill and endurance of the people conquering this arduous route for India. What an achievement!
thank you @peterfeeney721 appreciate it
Awesome!! Hats off to the BRO warriors...true unsung heroes of the Northern front!!
Incredible job by our BRO brothers, give them more resources , double their budget, this road and the Arunachal frontier highway are critical for India , Jai hind .

I solo bicycle all over zanska, and most of Ladakh 1800+km. The road over shi shi la and langsheed is brutal. This video brings back memories. Thank you
Great to see the series. You also mentioned the WOLF. Great work Amitabh sir, Rohit and Karan.

Fantastic video. Great work by Stratnewsglobal team as always. kudos to BRO, INDIAN Army, and numerous workers without whom the road would not have been possible.
Are civilians allowed on these roads?
Yea ... but very restricted
@Kns6132 i asked col gulia, chief engineer, project yojak, who is featured in part 3. his reply: So many you tubers are commuting already
Last year we carried out rescue for even foreigners.
We dont let civilians travel towards uncut stretch to avoid any injury/casualities.
@@davesen1see what col gulia has to say. have posted in comments
@@davesen1col gulia says:
" You Tubers have been travelling on this route and so many videos of same are available on internet. Also, last year certain foreign nationals on bagpack trip were rescued by local administration during adverse weather conditions. . There are no restrictions to traverse on this route and in fact locals look forward to welcome guests in their home stays. Tourists and you tubers are not permitted close to work sites to avoid unforeseen incidents"
@amitabhrevi thanks for that update. When I went to Spiti Valley in 2015, I was told that not many venture towards that direction as the roads are excruciating and there is a lot of scrutiny as the area is sensitive, although locals were always very welcoming. It's good to know things have changed this rapidly ... looking forward to another trip soon whenever I am back in 🇮🇳

My both grandparents are worked in military mother's father in China border and father's father in Kashmir
Govt should provide proper garments to bro labours in these area, it cost not much, atleast small help in giving them proper cloth will be good. Just suggestion.

Lt Pawan Kumar - how can tanks be transported across that bridge when it only has an 18 ton design load?? even towed artillery weighs 25 to 30 tons?
Excellent journalism, keep up the good work.
BRO needs to up their game. Quality of Chinese infra along LOC is 100 times better than ours. Almost ever BRO road washes away after winter. BRO roads lack support embackments, drainage and anti rubble nets. Most BRO road are in perpetual repair mode.

Some stretches on the mountain sides seem to only be one lane wide, unsure how heavier vehicles will traverse
BRO builds roads but in several stretches, especially on feeder and tertiary roads, why won’t they finish the job and paint proper lane markings, put in modern signage, etc. Seems like they do half the job and leave it unfinished. Look at how Chinese roads are made, consistently across the entire stretch for example.

None of the engineers recruited through UPSC ESE and SSC JE in BRO are interviewed. Many of them are from IIT NIT and other engineering college. They have more knowledge ( theoretical + practical ) and experience than those you interviewed.
