HAL And Private Industry Can Work Together To Make India Self Reliant In Aerospace Sector, Says CMD

- After years of being criticised for below par performance, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited or HAL, India's prime aerospace manufacturing company is beginning to pull up its socks and is making earnest attempts to fulfill expectations from its prime customer, the Indian military and the Ministry of defence. The government's recent emphasis on achieving self-reliance in defence and particularly in making the Light Combat Aircraft Tejas an acceptable addition to the Indian Air Force fighter fleet, has given a new impetus to HAL It wants to be a full spectrum technology company and not just a licensed manufacturer as it has been for years. It wants to create and own IPs, wants to collaborate with the emerging private companies in the Indian defence sector, be part of India's quest to be a defence platforms' exporter and undertake crucial research and development for futuristic products.
Chairman and Managing Director of HAL, CB Ananthakrishnan, talking to Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale in this episode of On the Shop Floor, elaborates on how HAL is ramping up its production capacity to meet growing demand, the company's plans to make LCA Mark II planes and also be part of the AMCA project in the coming decade besides strengthening its rotary wing division to serve the Indian armed forces and also become a major exporter to the world.

Love from nagaland india Jai Hind...
Excellent to see how we have moved from licensed manufacturing to indigenous manufacturing. Hopefully we'll to being a technology company & many private sector industries will develop too
It's really nice thing Public and Pvt defence Companies come together and manufacture a Aero Engine to make it fly.
Our scientists are capable.

Thank you Nitin sir for bringing out this awesome video of HAL facility
Which was never shown to public 😊😊😊

Same Question. I want to know

We really appreciate these wonderful and insightful conversations.
Thanks sir
Mr. Gokhale, why do not u talk with production managers rather than talking with only CMDs…
180+ Tejas mk1a will augment IAF in coming years ,only through HAL can IAF achieve the magic number of 42 squadrons, hopefully Tejas mk2 completes the first flight next year as expected
Classic...every episode is a great insight in Indian Defence Manufacturing Sector...Thanks for the great effort
Indigenous is the only way forward❤
Heartening to see many women technicians involved with the Tejas
Looking at the production facility they need more automation. They really havent invested much into improving the facilities.
Fighter jet lines cannot be automated. Because minute of minute details matter. It’s a lasting asset. Only thing that will be automated will be 3D printing and ovens for baking carbon fibre components. Which is why the production is slow. What they need is expansion and shifting it in the outskirts of Bengaluru city. What I fear more is security. As you can see, right at the HAL compound, residential plots are located. Anyone can spy from a distance.
@@ShaneCallum Have you ever watched the LM production lines? Go through the videos of F-35 production. You will be proven wrong.
Brother I don't think there are any robots/machine in the market that you can use to automation a aircraft manufacturing. Even if there is some machine that big players are using like boing or Airbus, They are not going to sell it to anyone. These kind of tech has to be develop inhouse through RND and its a Step by Step process and you should not expect highest efficiency so early.
@@sambartadutta5229 I have. F35 requirements are different. They have automated assembly line not the production. Also remember we procure radars and computer vision components from Israel. It’s basically plug and play. On the other hand, Raytheon manufactures radars for F35 and USS. Also the assembly line is more streamlined because of NATO demand. Most of the member states have to rely on US. So the contractors have no other option but to automate few things but not the production in itself. Orders are already in place. For Tejas, countries bave shown interest not purchase orders. For manufacturing 90 aircraft for Indian Air Force, you don’t need an assembly line. Also nations are waiting for mark 2 desperately. Once that happens, then you will see rapid shift in production process.
@@ShaneCallum You clearly haven't seen it. Go check the videos from Northorp Grumman who 'produce' critical assemblies for F-35 including the central fuselage. It's highly automated. So are the Dassault Business jet production line. I don't care what the NATO demands are but if the Indians are complacent enough to think that this peanut production rate is going to sustain them in modern warfare...it's about time they get a rude awakening. Hopefully within this decade. Given the number of multi axis CNC China produces each year....and employed in their automobile industry, it's safe to assume their frontline fighter 'production' lines are highly automated as well. 💀
Nice work team😊, do more factory visits across the defense industry... it's informative and interesting to watch.
Thanks Nitin, superb informative interview.
Excellent talk! Great to see Sqn Ldr Vijainder Thakur appreciating Indian defence production efforts.
Nice interview 👌 Always excited for Tejas’s news!!

😊👍👍👍 Thank you Nitin.
I think HAL should focus on production line and create atleast a massive assembly line for Helicopter production and Tejas production. To reduce the cost even further.
Also they should do R&D with private players or DRDO to develop engine technologies for fighter jets and helicopters.
This should be the primary goal in next 2 years.
did you see the video ? have you read about the helicopter factory in Tumkur ?
@@wassuphomies263 yes I have heard about it. I said more assembly lines need to be put. We need faster delivery of jets and helicopters.
Still AMCA is projected to be deliver till 2030. We are running late and need to catch up to fulfill the needs of our Armed Forces.
@@MN-zl1qg need is a very funny word. Nothing will happen till money gets sanctioned by the CCS. ask your MP why money is not getting sanctioned for these projects.
No private company will come or invest big in a volatile ,uncertain sector like fighterjets or helicopters when there is already an established public sector because govt preference will always go towards the public sector by hook or by crook. To create a fair competition only private or only public companies should be there. Noone was interested in Amca for same reason.
And the sad part is, the soldiers on the frontlines bear the brunt of this lopsided and sad state of affairs..
The PSUs will never step up or be as accountable or efficient as the private sector. There’s neither a carrot nor a stick to do so..
I have no problem of hal being a indian lockheed martin that wins majority contracts. But to create fair competition there must be boeing, bell, northdrop. For that to succeed hal must be privatised, aerospace engineering courses should be available nationwide.
What, you also fell for propaganda. Tell your private industry to develop a light heli for the civil sector which is explored and huge. What investment are you taking about.
Not HAL's fault that private industry was shitting when HAL was developing.
@@HA-rn2iu So what is Lockheed Martin, Boings, GE, Dassault, Safran.........How did they come about......by behaving like a private company with initial government support. Government can run Air India to the ground....let alone building one....
@@naveenshahi Tell you what, even HAL does not receive any government support. All their projects which require govt funding are scuttled by MOD. Which is why they started to go with internal funds, and hence we are seeing HAL LUH, HTT40, Cats and HLFT.
But private sector refuses to do any serious R&D. HAL has left the civil sector alone, yet nobody has taken up any design for a light aircraft or a light heli for the India civil market, which is huge and unexplored. Why should we blame HAL, which does R&D and has unrivalled R&D capabilities in India. I just laugh at people who say HAL should be shut down.
Great Going Nitin ji, keep it up 👍
Please make it happen. ⚔️
I hope that DRDO-HAL partners to developer Archer-UAV as an equivalent to Bayraktar TB2.

Private partnership will enhance the supply chain with skilled people... Own a powerful fighter engine with fast R&D needs as a priority...
Also make a video on Cochin Shipyard.
Everytime when I see in these Videos workers at ISRO or HAL working on such high tech equipments, I wonder are we really that capable to in making worldclass products. Can we trust such equipments in the hands of these guys on the assembly lines..
HAL must team up with India Inc into aero engineering business and expand the trainee numbers from 200-300 engineers to atleast 600-800. Pvt companies can fund for the training of these engineers. HAL can also make some money in the process.
Thanks so much Sir.Informative. A request to please visit SSS defence india a new company with great work in small arms.
What is production rate of fighters and helicopters at which HAL can supply to IAF or for export?
that shop needs more lighting
They realy need to adopt automation, the pace they are making very slow..
नमस्कार Nitin Sir,
In your discussion our Legends Chetak and Cheeta helicopter will decommissioned. So can we use those to develop as autonomous autopilot unmanned helicopter!
No questions on HLFT-42? Or TEDBF or HTT-40 and where it's assembly line stands as of now? This was disappointing in the lack of details. :( But thanks for your effort Nitin.
Why did he say that AMCA is still in preliminary stage when they say that CDR is done.. and why then we have been told that for AMCA Mk1 the Ge414 is finalised.. 👀
Despite assured orders from government, HAL is unable to increase turnover and profitability substantially, the management needs to be more aggressive and get best sales team for winning export orders and ensure more automation in their manufacturing to churn out good numbers in years to come .
Design would be focus
If we want to export the Aircraft to foreign countries then we have to develop to capacity 50 Aircrafts per year, Jay Hind 🇮🇳

One important questions remaining when HAL will work on pr of its products and demonstrations.
When i look at the satellite image of Indian military production facilities and then see China, Brazil or even Turkey it's just sheer disappointment.

Argentina rejected LCA and went for F16!
Srry to say but when i see assembly line of usa, Russian or french rafale they seems like more organized, everyone is doing their on work like workers do on assembly line but here disorganized, roaming here and there doing nothing. May be I'm wrong in this
Unfortunately, HAL is one of the most technological laggards in manufacturing. Their manufacturing is least automated and inefficient, infact the Su-30 we make in India costs more to integrate than the ones we import directly from Russia!
At max we should give additional 36-72 order for Rafales, and save the money there to invest it in Tejas mkII & AMCA (with upto 50% help of private cos for faster completion) projects.. everytime due to such foreign acquisitions our own excellent projects remain dead... if we commit for 90 more Rafales, then forget abt Tejas mk II & AMCA... it will cause severe delays, as we'll be paying the French untill 2035 and not enough funds will be left for our own Tejas... Tejas is one of the rare beautiful projects by DRDO which shld not be delayed by filing french pockets #Jaihind
