Crisp presentation. I want to add that there will be many moving parts to such a project, and not just the obvious agencies. Safeguarding tech secrets will be an important component of success. As Bharat works with GE on the 90 kN engine, there certainly will be sharing of security protocols to protect tech.
It is an engineering challenge as well as a production challenge. I do hope Indian indistry is able to raise themselves to measure up to the challenge. I tthink We will have to go beyond jugaad and improvisation.
The main challenge is to address politicians poor decision making, poor leadership. Engineering challenge can be overcome if politicians can take faster decisions.

No rationale provided why the Govt delayed the AMCA by 2-3 years. And the Su-57 can be termed stealth even when its exhaust isn't shielded, yet the AMCA is not judged similarly, this is clearly a mistake. In practical terms, the AMCA is a stealth fighter albeit designed against high band radars, the Su-57 may be superior kinematically, but it LO features don't even feature a serpentine air intake and depend more on a radar blocker.

I am also wondering when we ourselves will be able to manufacture equivalent of Rafael fighter planes procured from France. How do we compare ourselves with respect to China in all these?
The LCA project suffered delays mainly due to external events that happened after India Exploded first nuclear device. Second problem is the bureaucratic administration, and the lack of funds. The places like HAL should be autonomous bodies in order to be efficient! Look at ISRO. India has the technical talent to build this aircraft!

The doctrine should be slightly adjusted to newer threats. Like "Detect from anywhere, Target from anywhere, and Shoot from anywhere" (DTS). Example, Ghatak drone in enemy territory detected a threat (say an HQ9 battery) send encrypted telemetry to Eyes in the sky (AWACS) or any fighter of Airforce (I mean any fighter) to pinpoint the exact location, this info is passed on and the firing solution should be taken independently by any asset with armaments (drone, fighters, subs, destroyers, helis, BrahMos etc) available in that area. This should be the doctrine.
AESA radars generate so much heat which makes them visible on infrared spectrum so there is no fighter jet using AESA radar is invisible. However if you can detect them doesnt mean you can lock them there is not missile available to kill 5th generation fighter jet because these fighter can easily cancel infrared marking.

This one is because it uses fly-by-light. Which means its looms will be fiber optic instead of copper. So an EMP won't be able to induce large currents in the looms, thereby making the jet highly resistant to EMP.

India: 1) Still does not have a working engine of its own, Kaveri’s prognosis being extremely unclear & we have been embroiled in years-long complex negotiations with Safran & RR for a partner to develop and engine with domestic IP rights, no clue about those either. Not exactly sure why the deal with GE took so long considering we had AMCA in the planning pipeline for years. I suspect because neither Safran nor RR were giving us the tech we needed at the price or the terms we asked for. 2) Still does not have a working prototype of the aircraft, not even design or schematics (that they have released to the public). In 2024 this project exists as a planning document when our greatest strategic threat has hundreds of stralth fighters in the air, their quality albeit untested. The essential goals of our combat aviation development program, which i think stress parity with our adversaries, not even dominance, themselves called for an indigenously developed 4.5-5 gen air frame & engine successor to Tejas along with development of a new generation of ordnance, as it was felt these were expensive, politically sensitive pieces of equipment the availability of which should not hold national security policy or war fighting capability hostage. This was the case as far back as 2014-15. Ten years on, with a DRASTICALLY changed global geopolitical landscape, this project has finally gotten ‘clearance’, inspite of being namedropped by IAF as far back as a decade ago, when Turkey’s KAAN & RoK Boramae were uncomfirmed vaporware. Now these jets are flying, and we still have only vaporware. Well done, Modiji.
I know you are somewhat close to the policy makers. Umm i dont know is it just me,but why do i get a feeling that the policy makers are still not serious about the program or atleast that is what i get from this episode. They still dont seemed to have grasped the urgency of fielding a fifth gen aircraft in our inventory(indigenous ofcourse).China is nearly there! Once they get their engine ready,there is nothing holding them back. They will have about 500 J20s by 2030 i.e by the time we get AMCA. No matter what you do,Rafale is no match for J20. There are some things which cannot be achieved from a 4.5 gen aircraft. The Chineese will have absolute airdominance over us by the end of this decade if we take their current pace into account. AMCA is an absolute necessity. There should be no compromise! India seems to be one of those nations who still hasnt grasped the need to build a top of the line airforce,it seems like it still thinks of the airforce as sort of a supplementary force for the ARMY in getting the materials and equipments into area of action. Is it because India hasnt fought wars recently and is unware of the battlefield. OR do the policymakers have the wrong idea of power distribution and still think Army as sort of the Main decision maker as it has been past century or so.
1. The Chinese will not have 500 J20' s by 2030 simply because they are cost ineffective 2. When the F22 ( the best air dominance fighter on the planet) came to fruition the USAF committed to over 700 of those but ended up with just around 200 finally because they realised after a point that 5th gen have a very specialized use case, and are now going back to getting many more new 4.5 gen aircraft like the f-15 ex to aid the 5th gen. Exhaust shielding has proves to be ineffective because the today optical sensors pick it up no matter what! Thats why even F-35 has dropped the idea of exhaust shielding!

We are being too ambitious i feel . Countries like Russia with established aviation industries and experience of producing multiple successful aircraft couldn't nail it and we are looking to get it right in one go with tightest timelines in the world .
Lmao. Private sector is not ready and is actively refusing to enter this project even as a lead integrator, forget "competitive." If the likes of TATA or Adani or Mahindra try to make an AMCA-class aircraft on their own from scratch, it will take two more decades to see the first prototype or else it will be chock full of imported tech masquerading as Indian. ADA+HAL do have their flaws, but they are light years ahead of any private enterprise in India when it comes to designing and building a 5th gen fighter. Thankfully DRDO and HAL have nurtured some private sector companies like Dynamatic Technologies, Vem Technolgies, Astra Microwaves, etc who will all be part of AMCA from prototype stage itself. Sadly, casual defence observers among the Indian public are not very tech savvy and don't understand how much we owe to likes of DRDO, BARC and ISRO. These folks won't feel the importance of these organizations until they are, Gods forbid, gone.

With the advent of 3D High Tensile Metal Forging robots, Titanium and composites can be molded faster without any resource losses. F35 is at LM facility is doing that. Why can't we buy these robots who can build complex structural parts fully 3D printed?

Nitin ji, in your presentation, after describing Tejas Mk1, you have gone to AMCA. Tejas Mk2, itself is a aircraft in its own category. Tejas mk 2 is better than Rafael, Gripen and F26 block 70 in many ways. It is surprising that you made just a passing reference to Tejas Mk2 as a platform for the development of AMCA which is not the case. Let me explain to you why I say so. Tejas mk 2 is medium combat fighter which is totally different from Tejas mk 1 or 1A. It's aerodynamics and flight control aerodtnamucs is hugely different from Tejas mk 1 or Tejas mk 1 A. If you want I can explain the technical aspects to your viewers. Since the name of Tejas Mk2 has Tejas, so for general public it may be passed as an upgrade to Tejas Mk1 A which is not the case. Tejas Mk 2 program was authorised in 2009. It under gone a lot of R&D, design and development efforts. It has already taken 14 years or so, why? Answer lies in the fact that some of 5th generation technologies have been incorporated in Tejas Mk 2. These are sensor fusion, wide area displays, advance radar, advance mission computer etc etc. The best part is it will boast Astra Mk 1, and Astra mk 2, and Astra mk 3 as and when available. Let me tell you Sir, there is nothing like absolute stealth. In your presentation, I was expecting to learn RCS numbers if Rafale, F16 or Tejas Mk1A or Mk 2 and AMCA. Pity is neither foreign vendors never reveal the actual numbers nir we test and varify their claims. Let us look at the scenerio when Tejas Mk 2 is in service. Positive thing is that Tejas Mk 2 is 2 generations above Tekajs mk 1 or one generation above Tejas Mk 1A but in such a short time Ada with the help of India industry has covered a huge huge technological gap. You have also explained the stealth of AMCA in context of heat signature of the jet engines. But stealth consists of geometric stealth and material stealth with the help of radar absorbing material. India has already developed these technologies for AMCA. As far as, heat signature of enjone is concerned that is the latest area of ongoing international R&D. Different foreign companies from USA, Russia, China make different claims. Let me reterate again, once Tejas Mk 2 is rolled out, we will forget Rafale, Gripen, or Euro fighter jets. F35, F22, SU 57 SU 75 etc have to be evsluated on real need base. One has to keep in mind, once India aquired either of these, our zeal for the development of advance technologies will not only get adversely affected but indian fighter jets brand will also be affected. Who will buy from you when you yourself is an importer of fightet aircrafts.
By the time we get AMCA operationalise, world would have moved to 6.5 gen with advance AI and quantum compute based mission computers. I hope our defence ecosystems follows the lead and deliver model instead catchup and deliver. Pakistan even though debt trapped has somehow smartly managed to kept the airforce maintain tech edge over us and classic example being AWACs and Drones. In a jet engine, thrust output is not the only parameter, you need to achieve that thrust in a small engine, with as low a weight and diameter as possible. And when it comes to that, a 110 kN thrust class jet engine that weighs less than 1100 kg simply does not exist.

The timeliness for an collaboration for the 110 kN engine with foreign tie-up - GE, Safran and Rolls Royce is estimated to be by 2035 - till then we will depend on the imported under powered GE 414 engine. The first flight will take place by 2028-29 ( optimistic estimate). As regards US Allies , because Turkiye bought the S-400 systems from Russia they are out of the F-35 programme. So stop farting about it. Turkiye and South Korea have an active 5th Gen programme and US, China, Japan, Britain and Europe have an active 6th Gen fighter programme. So it is you who should stop farting and get it into your thick skull the gap between India and other smaller countries' 5th Gen fighter programmes and the generation gap with the major countries.
Drones and missiles are said to be changing the way areal warfare is conducted. Drones and some types of cruse & ballistic missiles are cheaper and tactically more effective than fifth generation fighters, from what we gather in media. Mighty Russian airforce is apparently held at bay by Ukrainian anti air missiles and their drones have destroyed Russian planes on ground as per u tube reports. Many nations like Turkey, Iran, Israel and Ukraine have made much progress in UAVs & have built solid export business in such new armaments. What is India’s achievement in this area? Building a fifth generation fighter is a good idea but how long will it take to become operational and what will it cost per unit in absence of export business, that ensures economy of scale? Also, what will be the import content in such a product?
Why does India need a blow torch on it's backside from Turkey to make a decision that should have been made a decade ago? Was not the pressure from China enough to get going because after all China and not Turkey is the real adversary? What really shocked and shamed India is the fact that Turkey, without having ever produced a 4th generation aircraft, suddenly comes out with a fifth generation fighter aircraft. Many years of testing, modifying, and improving remains for Turkey but it shows their will power, their technical ability, their ability to go around US sanctions after the purchase of S400 anti missiles from Russia and their ability to smash and disprove that often quoted Indian theory of "you can not create a fifth gen aircraft before making the 4th gen aircraft". The sad thing about India's progress or not in defence related equipment, is this tendency to try and invent "the wheel" at every stage. Why do you need to re invent every thing (that already exists) to the point of failure and time and cost over runs? If Indian IT industry worked on these same premises, India would never have taken off. Is this also an example of thinking pattern of the old vs the new generation of people in India? Its foolish to delay the project, more than what the timeline has been promised, as the case usually has been, & yet AMCA won't have shielded Exhaust like F-22 - failure & incompetency in design stage itself ! - When India gets the final test done to hit production or the 1st squadron is inducted, probably by 2040....China and others will have more stealthy jet than India.

India's 5th Gen fighter concept originated in 2007/2008 period. Back then it was called MCA. It has been almost 16 years since then. The only achievement is non-stop bragging, boasting, cheap talking. Turkey, South Korea have taken a lead over India now. It is a humiliation to India's political and scientific establishment, considering huge human, economic resourcs advantage India has over those smaller countries. Spending 8 years on AMCA design is ridiculous, absolute time waste. The continuous chalta hai attitude will lead India to run to Russia for Su-57 off the shelf purchase. India wasted golden opportunity to innovate and lead on fighter aviation. 16 years wasted. Wasted opportunies will never come back.
AMCA: CDR completed. Prototype building started. KAAN: Prototype flying, but CDR not yet complete. It is clear that one program is doing aircraft development the proper way, whereas the other is trying hard to impress while monkey-balancing on weak fundamentals. No rationale provided why the Govt delayed the AMCA by 2-3 years. And the Su-57 can be termed stealth even when its exhaust isn't shielded, yet the AMCA is not judged similarly, this is clearly a mistake. In practical terms, the AMCA is a stealth fighter albeit designed against high band radars, the Su-57 may be superior kinematically, but it LO features don't even feature a serpentine air intake and depend more on a radar blocker.

The LCA project suffered delays mainly due to external events that happened after India Exploded first nuclear device. Second problem is the bureaucratic administration, and the lack of funds. The places like HAL should be autonomous bodies in order to be efficient! Look at ISRO. India has the technical talent to build this aircraft!

But the problem is non-availability of indigenous turbo-jet engines. Even Tejas flies with borrowed engines.
The doctrine should be slightly adjusted to newer threats. Like "Detect from anywhere, Target from anywhere, and Shoot from anywhere" (DTS). Example, Ghatak drone in enemy territory detected a threat (say an HQ9 battery) send encrypted telemetry to Eyes in the sky (AWACS) or any fighter of Airforce (I mean any fighter) to pinpoint the exact location, this info is passed on and the firing solution should be taken independently by any asset with armaments (drone, fighters, subs, destroyers, helis, BrahMos etc) available in that area. This should be the doctrine.

AESA radars generate so much heat which makes them visible on infrared spectrum so there is no fighter jet using AESA radar is invisible. However if you can detect them doesnt mean you can lock them there is not missile available to kill 5th generation fighter jet because these fighter can easily cancel infrared marking.

1) Still does not have a working engine of its own, Kaveri’s prognosis being extremely unclear & we have been embroiled in years-long complex negotiations with Safran & RR for a partner to develop and engine with domestic IP rights, no clue about those either. Not exactly sure why the deal with GE took so long considering we had AMCA in the planning pipeline for years. I suspect because neither Safran nor RR were giving us the tech we needed at the price or the terms we asked for.
2) Still does not have a working prototype of the aircraft, not even design or schematics (that they have released to the public). In 2024 this project exists as a planning document when our greatest strategic threat has hundreds of stralth fighters in the air, their quality albeit untested.
The essential goals of our combat aviation development program, which i think stress parity with our adversaries, not even dominance, themselves called for an indigenously developed 4.5-5 gen air frame & engine successor to Tejas along with development of a new generation of ordnance, as it was felt these were expensive, politically sensitive pieces of equipment the availability of which should not hold national security policy or war fighting capability hostage. This was the case as far back as 2014-15.
Ten years on, with a DRASTICALLY changed global geopolitical landscape, this project has finally gotten ‘clearance’, inspite of being namedropped by IAF as far back as a decade ago, when Turkey’s KAAN & RoK Boramae were uncomfirmed vaporware. Now these jets are flying, and we still have only vaporware.

I know you are somewhat close to the policy makers. Umm i dont know is it just me,but why do i get a feeling that the policy makers are still not serious about the program or atleast that is what i get from this episode. They still dont seemed to have grasped the urgency of fielding a fifth gen aircraft in our inventory(indigenous ofcourse).China is nearly there! Once they get their engine ready,there is nothing holding them back. They will have about 500 J20s by 2030 i.e by the time we get AMCA. No matter what you do,Rafale is no match for J20. There are some things which cannot be achieved from a 4.5 gen aircraft. The Chineese will have absolute airdominance over us by the end of this decade if we take their current pace into account. AMCA is an absolute necessity. There should be no compromise! India seems to be one of those nations who still hasnt grasped the need to build a top of the line airforce,it seems like it still thinks of the airforce as sort of a supplementary force for the ARMY in getting the materials and equipments into area of action. Is it because India hasnt fought wars recently and is unware of the battlefield. OR do the policymakers have the wrong idea of power distribution and still think Army as sort of the Main decision maker as it has been past century or so.

Lmao. Private sector is not ready and is actively refusing to enter this project even as a lead integrator, forget "competitive." If the likes of TATA or Adani or Mahindra try to make an AMCA-class aircraft on their own from scratch, it will take two more decades to see the first prototype or else it will be chock full of imported tech masquerading as Indian.
ADA+HAL do have their flaws, but they are light years ahead of any private enterprise in India when it comes to designing and building a 5th gen fighter. Thankfully DRDO and HAL have nurtured some private sector companies like Dynamatic Technologies, Vem Technolgies, Astra Microwaves, etc who will all be part of AMCA from prototype stage itself.
Sadly, casual defence observers among the Indian public are not very tech savvy and don't understand how much we owe to likes of DRDO, BARC and ISRO. These folks won't feel the importance of these organizations until they are, Gods forbid, gone.

Nitin ji, in your presentation, after describing Tejas Mk1, you have gone to AMCA.
Tejas Mk2, itself is a aircraft in its own category. Tejas mk 2 is better than Rafael, Gripen and F26 block 70 in many ways.
It is surprising that you made just a passing reference to Tejas Mk2 as a platform for the development of AMCA which is not the case. Let me explain to you why I say so.
Tejas mk 2 is medium combat fighter which is totally different from Tejas mk 1 or 1A. It's aerodynamics and flight control aerodtnamucs is hugely different from Tejas mk 1 or Tejas mk 1 A. If you want I can explain the technical aspects to your viewers.
Since the name of Tejas Mk2 has Tejas, so for general public it may be passed as an upgrade to Tejas Mk1 A which is not the case.
Tejas Mk 2 program was authorised in 2009. It under gone a lot of R&D, design and development efforts. It has already taken 14 years or so, why? Answer lies in the fact that some of 5th generation technologies have been incorporated in Tejas Mk 2. These are sensor fusion, wide area displays, advance radar, advance mission computer etc etc. The best part is it will boast Astra Mk 1, and Astra mk 2, and Astra mk 3 as and when available.
Let me tell you Sir, there is nothing like absolute stealth. In your presentation, I was expecting to learn RCS numbers if Rafale, F16 or Tejas Mk1A or Mk 2 and AMCA.
Pity is neither foreign vendors never reveal the actual numbers nir we test and varify their claims.
Let us look at the scenerio when Tejas Mk 2 is in service. Positive thing is that Tejas Mk 2 is 2 generations above Tekajs mk 1 or one generation above Tejas Mk 1A but in such a short time Ada with the help of India industry has covered a huge huge technological gap.
You have also explained the stealth of AMCA in context of heat signature of the jet engines. But stealth consists of geometric stealth and material stealth with the help of radar absorbing material. India has already developed these technologies for AMCA.
As far as, heat signature of enjone is concerned that is the latest area of ongoing international R&D. Different foreign companies from USA, Russia, China make different claims.
Let me reterate again, once Tejas Mk 2 is rolled out, we will forget Rafale, Gripen, or Euro fighter jets.

Maybe one day you'll grow enough braincells to understand that F-22's engine F119 weighs a lot more and also intakes a lot more air than the engine of AMCA-class jet. In a jet engine, thrust output is not the only parameter, you need to achieve that thrust in a small engine, with as low a weight and diameter as possible. And when it comes to that, a 110 kN thrust class jet engine that weighs less than 1100 kg simply does not exist.

Drones and missiles are said to be changing the way areal warfare is conducted. Drones and some types of cruse & ballistic missiles are cheaper and tactically more effective than fifth generation fighters, from what we gather in media. Mighty Russian airforce is apparently held at bay by Ukrainian anti air missiles and their drones have destroyed Russian planes on ground as per u tube reports. Many nations like Turkey, Iran, Israel and Ukraine have made much progress in UAVs & have built solid export business in such new armaments. What is India’s achievement in this area? Building a fifth generation fighter is a good idea but how long will it take to become operational and what will it cost per unit in absence of export business, that ensures economy of scale? Also, what will be the import content in such a product?
Why does India need a blow torch on it's backside from Turkey to make a decision that should have been made a decade ago? Was not the pressure from China enough to get going because after all China and not Turkey is the real adversary? What really shocked and shamed India is the fact that Turkey, without having ever produced a 4th generation aircraft, suddenly comes out with a fifth generation fighter aircraft. Many years of testing, modifying, and improving remains for Turkey but it shows their will power, their technical ability, their ability to go around US sanctions after the purchase of S400 anti missiles from Russia and their ability to smash and disprove that often quoted Indian theory of "you can not create a fifth gen aircraft before making the 4th gen aircraft". The sad thing about India's progress or not in defence related equipment, is this tendency to try and invent "the wheel" at every stage. Why do you need to re invent every thing (that already exists) to the point of failure and time and cost over runs? If Indian IT industry worked on these same premises, India would never have taken off. Is this also an example of thinking pattern of the old vs the new generation of people in India? If that is true, then we need to shake up the chairs occupied by oldies in the defense manufacture. At this rate, Turkey will be coming out with a working model of an aircraft engine and we will still be re inventing the turbine blades!!

Its foolish to delay the project, more than what the timeline has been promised, as the case usually has been, & yet AMCA won't have shielded Exhaust like F-22 - failure & incompetency in design stage itself !
- When India gets the final test done to hit production or the 1st squadron is inducted, probably by 2040....China and others will have more stealthy jet than India.

India's 5th Gen fighter concept originated in 2007/2008 period. Back then it was called MCA. It has been almost 16 years since then. The only achievement is non-stop bragging, boasting, cheap talking. Turkey, South Korea have taken a lead over India now. It is a humiliation to India's political and scientific establishment, considering huge human, economic resourcs advantage India has over those smaller countries. Spending 8 years on AMCA design is ridiculous, absolute time waste. The continuous chalta hai attitude will lead India to run to Russia for Su-57 off the shelf purchase. India wasted golden opportunity to innovate and lead on fighter aviation. 16 years wasted. Wasted opportunies will never come back.
