- Most people don’t see the potential in a one-storey brown brick bungalow with cramped rooms and little natural light. But designer Brian McCourt, host of HGTV’s Backyard Builds, did. His design firm took on the job of overhauling the dark and dated post-war bungalow, blowing out the walls and opening up the ceilings to create a light-filled, modern family home with plenty of space and a large functional kitchen.

I LOVE that he mentioned at 4:30 where the TV normally goes and that they’ve staged the place for the video! It really helps me picture it as a home and not a magazine cover.
And how are you supposed to be comfortable watching this tv when the sofa and both armchairs are sideways? It looks amazing, thats all.

@@mio0101 Do you know what the word "comfortable" means? In such designed room only one person on the sofa watches the TV comfortably. People sitting on the armchairs will always have a TV on the side ... unless good design is constantly moving furniture duh :)
I had an idea for a sunk in wall cavity to house the TV, so the TV is flush with the outer wall, and then have a larger framed artwork in front of it. Then it serves as a nice focal point, but then to watch TV, you simply pull down the lightweight artwork off the wall. For those that don't watch much TV it's a perfect solution.

The way contractors finish things can really make a difference to how you feel in your space, but also, these are skilled professionals. They deserve to have their work appreciated.

I love the interior for sure, but painting the EXTERIOR white made the whole house seem modern and fresh before people even step inside. MASSIVE improvement on curb appeal!

Really clever what you did there Brain to stain the wood beams in the same color to match the flooring. It looks continuous which gives it a convincing optical illusion.

That was a good decision to boldly remove walls and ceilings and it looks fabulous. These days, most people can't find a handyman to simply hang a light fixture.

I've been so over all white spaces but the tones, use of wood and materials, and subtle but not competing textures is done so well. Such a great use of space and stunning balance between form and function. Also, thoSE CHAIRS

absolutely brilliant! even though some of the elements r not my taste, the reno is fantastic, so smart and cohesive. one small thing bothered me: if u have a tv over the place and electronics on the shelves, dont remove them for the shoot! let us see how the place is lived in. the glass wall with glued on metal is mind-blowing
yes, and how do you practically watch TV as a family with current seating and tv over the fireplace. I cant see that as being comfortable.
@@MStar10 yep, i think there r many things they do for the shoot that look good with a sweep of an eye but not practical in life
