Woodturning a Traditional Walnut Dough Bowl on the Lathe

  • Well after an unintended break, I am finally back with another bowl & this week I decided to revisit my process of how I turn a traditional style dough bowl with handles from this beautiful piece of walnut. I turned a dough bowl from some amazing ambrosia maple a few months ago & I wanted to revisit the idea and refine some of my techniques with it. I am absolutely thrilled with the outcome & it was a pleasure getting to turn green walnut again for the first time in a few years! ALSO I finally got a new knife for my coring system & was able to get another smaller bowl from this walnut. Thank you for watching!

      Thank you! Yeah the handle size seems to be the trickiest part of these bowls. Dont want them too large but large enough to hold.

    Lovely work. Every time I watch your vids, I get the itch to turn one. I never was real good with finishes, so I basically just backed off. I only have a 12x20 lathe, but did enjoy making pens, bowls, etc...

    I know I say this all the time in the comment section, but the way you film and edit is pretty awesome to me. The natural sunlight gives the entire video an old time shop feel with a somewhat modern twist. You do good work man. From one turner to another.

    • @andrewmccarn
      @andrewmccarn  11 месяцев назад +1

      I always appreciate those comments though! I like the description of old shop with modern twist because I have never really thought about it that way but I think it works perfectly. My shop has a lot of things wrong with it but the natural light definitely isn't one of those things at least on a pretty day lol

      @k9insomniac783 11 месяцев назад

      @@andrewmccarn every time I watch one of your videos, it just takes me back to the old time shops. Where all things were made from wood by craftsman that learned from their parents. The natural light just sets the tone perfectly. I certainly don’t see any problems with your shop. I do all my turning in a 16x20 ft garage with kayaks, 4 wheelers, and tools. Lol

      Another awesome piece. Have you thought about when coring like in this video to put a small tennon or recess on the interior blank so when you pop it out you can put it in your chuck to shape up the bottom so a tennon can be added to it?

    • @andrewmccarn

      Its the OneWay Coring System. Its very easy and very stable. A little on the pricey side since you have to purchase each individual coring knife but its been worth the investment.

      Thank you! I use the Oneway Coring System. A little pricey since you have to buy each individual knife but I like how its one solid piece of equipment. Its been worth the investment!

    • @boooshes
      @boooshes 11 месяцев назад

      I completely agree. I have used Oneway's coring system for a few years and cored probably 150 blanks of three different sizes with it. It takes a little learning, including how you want to sharpen the cutters. I've recently started sharpening my cutters with a slight negative rake and have found better performance.

    Beautiful bowl. I have been turning for 3 years now and am starting to get slightly confident in my ability. I am in awe whenever I see someone turn effortlessly and so smoothly like you do. Also I struggle every time I use a chainsaw to split a log for a bowl. You make it look so effortless. You said in the description that the walnut was green when you turned the bowl. How does it look after it drys? How much warping and splitting do you get? I do not have much luck when I turn green wood. I really like your shop. Can you give me an estimation on its size? I would like to build a barn for a shop and was curious on how much room I would need to have a space that was not crammed full. Yours has a great feel. Thanks for sharing!

    • @andrewmccarn
      @andrewmccarn  11 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you for the kind words!
      For the chainsaw, key is keeping the chain sharp. Also you could look into a ripping chain. I use one made by Granberg International and its fantastic.
      The warping really depends on the wood type. For something like this walnut, I usually only get slight warping whereas something like oak, I will get a lot but I enjoy the look of warping so I tend to try and incorporate it into my work. I also don't really get too much splitting. More of that just comes back again to wood type and how prone it is to cracking.
      My shop I think is like 18 x 38? I'm not entirely sure, I know its somewhere around that though. If you get the chance to build one then go bigger lol I love my shop but I am starting to outgrow it but also my storage solutions are not the best so I could probably make my shop alot more efficient.
      Hopefully this helps!

    Nice job. Did you really turn this while the wood was still wet, or was there actually drying time between the chainsaw and the lathe? If you turned it wet, how much warping/distorting did you experience after completion?

    • @andrewmccarn
      @andrewmccarn  11 месяцев назад +2

      Yep! The chainsawing & turning was all shot in one day. The sanding part of the video was around 2 months later after the bowl had dried so in the last shots you can see there wasn't too much movement. In my experience, walnut tends to be pretty stable and doesn't move too much. This one went a little oval on me but nothing too crazy.

    Did you turn this in one turning or did you let it dry out between roughing and finishing seems like it was green to start but then all the dust looked dry at the end

    • @andrewmccarn
      @andrewmccarn  9 месяцев назад

      This was green! I turned it to the final thickness the first turn, wet sand with 80 and then let it dry for a few weeks before coming back and finishing! Hope that helps
