Beautiful piece; a work of art. I had the good fortune to have some Maple like that and you just can't beat the grain. You are a true artisan, thanks for sharing. Glad I found your channel. I'm a fan.
I appreciate the kind words! This was the first time I have ever been lucky enough to get a log of maple like this. It is absolutely beautiful! I appreciate ya taking the time to watch & comment as well!
I never watch this kind of content and am not a wood turner myself, so, I hope this video coming up in my recommended means it’s getting pushed by the algo, bc finding it was fantastic! Watching this was so satisfying, and the finished piece is absolutely gorgeous. Easy, eaaaasy new sub.
@jrclark22 I was just thinking the same thing since I’m also living in Phoenix (unfortunately? Well, as far as felled trees/ finding lumber like this goes).
I HIGHLY recommend making some calls! Was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Landscapers & arborist will be your best friends when it comes to logs lol
@@andrewmccarn did it move a lot after you finished it up? I am seeing massive distortions in my larger greenwood turnings this time of year... my 22" fruit bowl almost looks like a massive taco now... 😞
Thank you Lori! As of now, my plan is to post videos that vary on the amount of talking. Some will have none, some will have some moments like this & then there will be ones like todays post where it is mostly talking. So it will just depend on what the video is about but also if there is anything specific in a video that doesn't have much talking but something you would like to know, dont hesitate to ask!
Thank you! I do a mixture of both. The majority of them can be used but some are more decorative. I mostly finish my pieces with tung oil or danish oil, it just depends how I am feeling that day lol
I accidentally came across woodturning recently & l must say it's fascinating & now watch all the time & really enjoy ur big bowls & this pretty maple didn’t disappoint, it's lovely 😊
Wow! Fresh cut maple is kinda boring, it's amazing how much character it picks up just sitting out in the weather for awhile. Plus all the burls and knots, great project. How are you liking the Laguna lathe, any issues or problems that you've had to deal with? I'm thinking of upgrading myself.
I agree & maple has to be one of my more favorite woods to work with. You really never know what it will look like until you cut into it. So far I love the laguna & highly recommend it! My only thing is if you can upgrade to the 220 version then that is what I would do but so far the 110 has handled everything I have thrown at it with ease.
Weiter so !
@andrewmccarn I saw when you poured the water on it that it was going to be an extraordinary beautiful bowl. The oil made everything pop. Again, great job!
Nice camera movement in your production, Andrew. Really quality work on both your videography and turning. And what a dramatic finish application! Great work.
Nicely done. 2 questions for you. What brand and size bowl gouge do you use? Do you have any problems not using the tailstock for support on the inside?
Thank ya! I use the Carter & Sons 5/8s bowl gouge with a Trent Bosch handle & not really. I rarely use the tailstock unless I absolutely have too like if a piece is too unstable or sticks out over the bed too much but usually I dont.
How long are you drying the green turned bowls out before finishing? Ima bout to get an 18/36 and bed extension. Thought hard about the 24/36 but dang $$$
I typically try to let them sit for atleast 4 weeks but they usually sit longer as I get busy doing other things lol I highly recommend the extension. I have loved using it. If you can get the 24/36 then Id say go for it! Wouldve been my choice but I only have 110v in my shop lol
I typically call around to arborist & landscapers in the area to see if they sell any logs they cut down. Have made some good connections that way! Also I will check out facebook market place every so often.

Yep, that turned out beautifully.
I appreciate that! Its hard to mess up with wood as pretty as that maple
That is an awesome looking piece! Beautiful work!
Wow that's absolutely beautiful.
Thank you!
This bowl is stunning! You did an excellent job on it. Thank you for showcasing our Half & Half!
Thank you for watching! That oil really help that grain pop!
@@andrewmccarn It really did!!
Just beautiful. The wood and the organic shape you created.
Thank you very much!
Beautiful. The wood is gorgeous. The size is fabulous. Your work is spot on. The finish is just right. Way to go!
I appreciate the very kind words Doug!

I'd think a lot of people would like to have one like that. I would.
It should be available on my website in the next few weeks!
When watching a turning video it is comforting to listen to good music. Great bowl.
Awesome work, brother! Well done!!! Thats gorgeous work!
WOW...........
My reaction putting that finish on it!
Stunning piece and amazing wood. Thanks for sharing.
This looks so cool. Looking forward to this build. 😃😃
Love your channel and the scale of the pieces

I appreciate the very kind words & also subscribing!
Nice and thin for its size, LOVE IT!!!
Thanks! I decided to go on the thinner side this time & I am glad I did
I wish I could find logs that big in Phoenix!
North Carolina trees are definitely a blessing for wood turners here!
@jrclark22 I was just thinking the same thing since I’m also living in Phoenix (unfortunately? Well, as far as felled trees/ finding lumber like this goes).
Beautiful! Love turning maple lots of wonderful surprises in every log.
Thats one of the main reasons I love turning maple, you never know how itll look
What a huge live edge bowl! It's so beautiful!👍👍
That is a beautiful bowl. Great work, can’t wait to see you turn more. Scott
Thanks Scott! I'm anxious to get some more cut up & back on the lathe already
Wonderful work Andrew
Thank you Robert!
Beautiful wood, beautiful work - pleasure to watch! It really soaked that oil up at the end!
Yes it did! Had to do few coats on this one and may go back and do a few more lol
Beautiful bowl. Amazing grain.
I’m super jealous of all the lumber in your yard though. I’ve gotta make friends with a tree service. 😂
I HIGHLY recommend making some calls! Was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Landscapers & arborist will be your best friends when it comes to logs lol
what a great haul, and as usual, you skill and eye are without compare. Way to go Andrew!
I really do appreciate that! I have to say the maple did all the heavy lifting here.

Fantastic piece, beautiful piece of wood and a stunning looking bowl 😊
Thank you for the kind words!
Love the finish. Gorgeous work!!❤
Hi Andrew! Not only is this bowl huge, but the wood is spectacular!!! Is it possible for you to talk more during your turning though? Please

Nice work. I have a Laguna lathe at my place also. 1216 but im new to turning. But you’re doing some awesome stuff.
Thats exciting! One of the best choices I ever made was getting into wood turning so have fun with it!
Love your large bowls! Do you sell them as functional or art? What are you finishing with?

This is a stunning piece of wood....WOW! I love everything about this bowl. Great video!
Thank you!! I was expecting pretty wood when I cut it up but nothing like this. I was thrilled once that oil started going on there.
@andrewmccarn I saw when you poured the water on it that it was going to be an extraordinary beautiful bowl.
The oil made everything pop. Again, great job!
Absolutely beautiful natural edge bowl. About what size is it?
Thank you! This one came out around 16" x 8" at the tallest point
Nice camera movement in your production, Andrew. Really quality work on both your videography and turning. And what a dramatic finish application! Great work.
I appreciate that! Been trying out a few new things here lately with my videography so glad to know its being noticed!

What's the use of having a big lathe if you don't use it to turn big pieces? Well done 👍
Exactly! & thank you!
I know you have to sell it but I wish we could keep it! Haha
