A few people have brought up the music volume here, so for the record. I streamed this live and had twitch chat help decide the volume, (with the exception of the last 4 songs because that was recorded at a later date) and in editing it seemed fine. Personally with my speakers or headset the volume seems fine but if some of it seems a bit quiet that's something I will try to fix in future. But in most cases I simply just have the people joining me live help adjust volume for this. Hopefully that is understandable.
As a musician of 20+ years, it's always really interesting to hear the musical opinions of listeners/non-musicians. I think it's really important for musicians to understand that we're also supposed to be the audience for our own music, and so understanding what makes a listener like a song vs what makes a musician like song is a very interesting thing to think about. When I see you talk about a certain song "ramping up" or "this is the good part" or "the song gets interesting here", it makes me realize that there are certain experiences in the music that are being seeked out when listening that are outside of the notes, or maybe the way the notes and rhythms are presented are creating a certain impression on you. I understand that the personal experience we have with music in general is going to dictate our expectations for it, and it's really cool to see that in effect here. Anyway, I'm talking too much about this lol. Great job, I can tell this took a lot of work on your part! Can't wait to see what kind of impression Splatoon 3 is going to have on us 🙂
Yeah thats really interesting. For me some of that just comes from it being in game song, Splatoons multiplayer is very intense and fast so I like songs with a similar feel, and those that lack it aren't bad but just don't fit as well to that environment per say, at least to me. Id def love to see your own opinions on more of the music if u ever do something like this, since my pov is more of a casual listener then an expert id love to see all the details I missed.
Oh yeah, honestly this is possibly the strangest experience I have ever had: trying to listen to these songs from the perspective of a non-musician. Jarring to say the least.
@@ProChara u mentioned the “weird 7/4 salmon run vibe” but fishing frenzy is actually in 31/16 which is why it sounds like the bars are getting just a bit cut short and leads to that off-putting feel which is just genius writing from the splatoon music directors
@@jpshy1130 In a way you’re right, but specifically by the game’s metrics you’re a little bit wrong. If we do the math and divide by the highest possible whole number to account for all the song sections then yes, that is the time signature. But, that’s not how the song acts/sounds, or how the game notates it. The structure of the song, as it sounds and as the measures are divided in squidbeats, the salmon run songs are actually constantly switching time signatures. Its the odd time signatures it switches to that makes it sound like the measures are constantly getting cut off as you noted. Odd time signatures tend to do that(8bit music theory has an entire video on odd time signatures). Agin, you’re not technically wrong, it’s just a clarification about the art in music. Every song that’s 4/4 is also technically 2/4 but we say it’s 4/4 because it sounds like it’s 4/4. Saying that the entire song is 31/16 is useful to understand the macro-structure of its sections, but less useful to understand how it actually sounds or is constructed on the most audible level.
As someone who's hyperfocused the hell outta the Splatoon soundtracks, I can really appreciate the effort put into this tier list. The music may be weird to those who aren't used to it, but it holds a special place in my heart. I could go on and on about how much I adore them. I have the perspective of both a musician who appreciates the technical details, and a fan of the series who lives for hype and nostalgia, and it just makes my heart so happy to combine both. Hey Chara. Your videos have inspired me to start doing my own Splatoon content. I want to target Spanish-speaking audience. I live in Costa Rica and I have noticed a lack of information regarding the depth of this game, which I wish people understood here in Latin America. Most of my knowledge of the game is thanks to my English, which allows me to understand the content out there. Wish me luck! I'm hoping to get the money soon to buy some basic streaming equipment.
As a rock Musician, the game’s music may be unusual but, I believe that it's an amazing battle theme, it enhances the back-and-forth energy between the two teams, and watching a non-musician rank this is just as entertaining.
Personally salmon run ost are my absolute favorites. I just really like it when songs have the guts to try somthing really different and those ones just have a vibe I can't find anywhere else.
My favourites are endorphin surge, shock, sucker punch friend list, ink me up, tentacular circus, tacones revendous, cepholoparade, maritime matrony, don't slip, riptide rupture, color pulse, bomb rush blush ebb and flow and ink or sink those are bangers but my absolute favourite is regret #8
I would agree for S1. But S2 is generally disappointing to me. I really wish there was an option to turn off music, and I would literally just put S1 battle songs on in the background instead without having to mute the entire game and not getting to hear SFX and being at a disadvantage. There are some stand out good songs, especially in octo expansion, but generally 2 is meh imo.
@@Reilia_ I completely agree! I really hope Splat 3 takes more inspiration from Splat 1 music. looking at the trailers there have been some proper tunes so I think Nintendo is going the right direction :D
I really admire your work on this, going through every single song and also condensing it from the stream. I could only see the Octo Expansion live, but seeing the rest was such a delight, and wow, it was such a nostalgia trip!
I just watched the whole thing and man, I forgot how good Splatoon music was. Not only does many of the tracks fit the theme/mood of which you are in, but they are BANGERS as well. Personal favorites of mine that show this are #8 regret (the 8ball stage theme) and #0 shell
45:20 and 1:00:16 are where the happy tears go off. These endings made me feel so accomplished in my darkest time of my life, and really helped me become the person I am.
Thank you so much: I bet this took hours to do, with editing included, and I appreciate the tier list although I felt like some songs you placed as mediocre made me sad, but I loved how so many Octo Expansion songs got X or S+ tiers, made me reappreciate the OSTs all over again.
i still vividly remember the splashdown into the closing of inkoming as the splatoon 2 logo flashed up on screen, hype as hell reveal also wet floor im very okay with, the main thing i love about their music is the bass lines in their music tbh also yeah OE really carried S2s lmao
Hey Chara! New fan of your content and streams, so I'm late seeing this video, but I LOVE it! I've studied music professionally for many years and have been a musician for most of my life, so this one hit home! Only area of disappointment was not seeing your rating/reaction to the live concert versions, especially with the crowd's energy and participation, and the new verses in many of the pieces. When I got those CD's and listened to them for the first time, I ACTUALLY cried with happiness, ESPECIALLY with Off the Hook closing their concert with an incredible version of "Now or Never." I'd LOVE to see this continued when the entire Splatoon 3 OST is out, DLC and all. Thank you for this video!
Wish you included the concert music in here. Into the Light is somehow even better live, and I love the concert rendition of Muck Warfare! There's also some unique songs on the live albums like the Inkopolis Memorial Mixtape and the demo of City of Color
I listened to the concert version of Shark Bytes before the in game version and I was strangely disappointed. I've learned to overcome myself and like the in game version too but the concert version is just SO good!!
24:50 This song still sticks out to me maybe still put of nostalgia but the final bit that they put exclusively in the reveal trailer when they show what's going to go down is what really gets me.
Idk why nobody ever seems to talk about it, but the smash ultimate remix of bomb rush blush is actually my favorite song in the entire soundtrack for that game. It feels like a fanmade remix and I mean that in the best possible way. Such a banger.
Hearing the salmon run victory jingle after a super intense difficult wave 3 literally brings me back to life, S+ for me on that one just because I get butterflies in my stomach listening to it Also the final fest has ANOTHER alt versions of Now or Never (with both squid sisters and off the hook)
Ok so little hot take here, I LOVE broken coral and riptide rupture. They are like the ones that I would rank highest out of all of the multiplayer splatoon 2 songs, not the whole series but the 2nd game. I just love the up beat trumpet mixed in with the more melancholy piano.
Idk why but Octo Expansion conclusion had me grinning LITERALLY from ear to ear because I was so happy to see them saving Inkopolis- *like I literally wanted to jump for joy in excitement and I have no idea why-*
Got about 5 minutes into this when I realized you were going to have to rank Tidal Rush, my favorite song in the whole series. Quickly went to check where you put it (while trying very hard not to cry BECAUSE THAT SO (stopping myself before I rant)) and... well, I am happy you at least had some sense to put it in S+... Tidal Rush is literally better than Calamari. There. I said it.
To be honest, I prefer pretty much all of the S2 stuff to the S1 stuff. Instrumentation is more lively, rhythmically all of the stuff is just way more interesting and cool to listen to, and I actually LIKE the squid vocals. They just tried so much cool shit like fiddle-shanty rock and upbeat jazz-rock instrumentation and that shit carried some of the poorer songs like the lobby theme. I like pretty much all the songs that play in real matches because they all have such bombastic presence.
All the music in Splatoon are Godlike Breathtaking but if I have to choose number one... It would be "Into The Light" which is probably the best saddest song since "Rosalina Story Book".
42:50 I cannot listen to this without hearing alpharad say it sounds like Imagine Dragons 😭 48:05 how many times are we gonna hear the Hero Mode jingle 🕺 For Spicy Calimari Inkantation, I’d like to point out that both inkantations fit for their context. Spicy is more emotional for reuniting family, original feels like you’re fighting for your life. Ink Theory is literally just freeform jazz. It’s the music I also associate when I know a ranked match is gonna be a losing nightmare.
The original now or never from splatoon 1 is my favorite of them all. It continually has high pressure rhythm with its drums and it always gave me a sense of urgency playing splatoon 1. Splatoon 2's now or never never made me feel as urgent.
Bruh, it was going so well and then tide goes out ended up in a tier *Pain* #1: maritime memory #2: tide goes out #3: into the light #4: seaskape 5&6 would definitely be the sashimori songs #7: probably bomb rush blush
I didn’t play Splat1, and all of the nostalgia songs you’re naming are what attracted me to play Splat2. I found the Splatune ost before I played any Splatoon games.
Fun fact about Shashimori, they don't have a vocalist. The DJ (the young Octoling) takes vocals from other albums and ancient records, implying that it's the only band that has human vocals in-universe.
1:04:08 the trailer version of entropical is significantly better than the in-game version since it has the buildup intro and a proper outro, both of which the game had to leave out because it causes the track to go over 1 minute.
1:10:51 LMAOOOOO, THAT'S F- TIER JESUS that sounds like a now or never if it was played at a squid nursery Anywho, thanks for some banger content to watch while im sick :D

Yo I've been looking for Spanish Splatoon content for AGES. You just got a sub :) Hope great things come to you in the future
Aww, that sounds awesome! Good luck, I wish you all the best, you've got this, if it's still what you wanna do! ^^
Im honestly kinda sad that so many people hate metalopod. It has really good guitar riffs
And the screamo
i love it so much, seeing the ranking broke my heart lol
It’s honestly my fav Splatoon 1 battle theme
As a rock Musician, the game’s music may be unusual but, I believe that it's an amazing battle theme, it enhances the back-and-forth energy between the two teams, and watching a non-musician rank this is just as entertaining.
Personally salmon run ost are my absolute favorites.
I just really like it when songs have the guts to try somthing really different
and those ones just have a vibe I can't find anywhere else.
My favourites are endorphin surge, shock, sucker punch friend list, ink me up, tentacular circus, tacones revendous, cepholoparade, maritime matrony, don't slip, riptide rupture, color pulse, bomb rush blush ebb and flow and ink or sink those are bangers but my absolute favourite is regret #8
very based
One thing we can agree on, is that Splatoon and Splatoon 2 HAVE SOME OF THE BEST GAME MUSIC TO EVER EXIST
AND NOT TO MENTION SPLAT 3 TOO!!!
that's true for most Japanese games
I would agree for S1. But S2 is generally disappointing to me. I really wish there was an option to turn off music, and I would literally just put S1 battle songs on in the background instead without having to mute the entire game and not getting to hear SFX and being at a disadvantage.
There are some stand out good songs, especially in octo expansion, but generally 2 is meh imo.
@@Reilia_ I completely agree! I really hope Splat 3 takes more inspiration from Splat 1 music. looking at the trailers there have been some proper tunes so I think Nintendo is going the right direction :D
Tbh I agree but some of splat 2s songs are god tier shooting starfish blitz it or endorphin rush
@@triggerhappy4199 yeah
I just like how Nintendo made 181 Songs for this franchise
Glad to say I was watching on twitch for this masterpiece
I like Splatoon 1 music so much better than 2 honestly has a big effect on how much I enjoy playing the different games
I wont have time to see the entire vid BUT so far I'm agreeing with pretty much every choice!
well done Mr chara
Why does everyone say "Splat attack" it's "Splattack", one word. the at in 'splat' is the same 'at' that starts 'attack' you don't repeat the at
Precisely!
Holy smokes wait wait wait wait nono no wait what excuse me no no WHAT
@@DvH_2 did you not know
@@BrixVGM NO
@@DvH_2 you fool
So what I’ve learned from this video is that every song from off the hook slaps
Thank you so much: I bet this took hours to do, with editing included, and I appreciate the tier list although I felt like some songs you placed as mediocre made me sad, but I loved how so many Octo Expansion songs got X or S+ tiers, made me reappreciate the OSTs all over again.
Ink Me Up and Metalopod are my favourite songs from Splatoon 1. They got me so hyped in Smash Bros. I’d always play Moray Towers just to use them
YESS Aww, I getcha! XD
Dang, the amount of effort it would take to make this video, I appreciate your effort to bring us good quality content
i still vividly remember the splashdown into the closing of inkoming as the splatoon 2 logo flashed up on screen, hype as hell reveal
also wet floor im very okay with, the main thing i love about their music is the bass lines in their music tbh
also yeah OE really carried S2s lmao
“Blitz it” is what got me into chiptune and I will forever be thankful for that
It might actually be scientifically impossible to create a Splatoon song as horrendous as Ultimate’s Now or Never remix.
Pretty sure Chara has said this before, but Ultimate’s Now or Never is what people who hate splatoon music say splatoon music is like
I remember playing Salmon Run and my dad walked in and commented on the music, calling it "strange noises." I quite like the strange noises.
I really love where they’re going with now or never, it sounds so good compared to the second one
Just here to say that the Bomb Rush Blush remix in Smash is really good.
I was worried Shooting Starfish wouldn't be appreciated, but thank you for giving it s+
Also, yes, into the light is the best splatoon song
Honestly I was going to lose it if shooting starfish wasn’t S+ or X
The fact that chara called a cello a guitar 😂
Over an hour long, time to grab some popcorn and sit down for a show
Idk why nobody ever seems to talk about it, but the smash ultimate remix of bomb rush blush is actually my favorite song in the entire soundtrack for that game. It feels like a fanmade remix and I mean that in the best possible way. Such a banger.
Hearing the salmon run victory jingle after a super intense difficult wave 3 literally brings me back to life, S+ for me on that one just because I get butterflies in my stomach listening to it
Also the final fest has ANOTHER alt versions of Now or Never (with both squid sisters and off the hook)
17:27 i really hope they'll be back in Splatoon 3 with the triple inkstrikes being in the game and all they were probably my favorite types of levels
Sharkbytes not being in X was the only one that completely confused me.
For the first couple of Splatoon 2 songs, I think I prefer the testfire versions. They sound a bit more Splatoon1-like
Not even kidding, I watched just to see your thoughts on Into the Light. Best song btw CANNOT BE BEATEN also love your vids keep it up!
till this day, it's canon that Pearl says "FUCK" lmfao
I bet Anarchy Rainbow would be in S+ AT LEAST
Got about 5 minutes into this when I realized you were going to have to rank Tidal Rush, my favorite song in the whole series.
Quickly went to check where you put it (while trying very hard not to cry BECAUSE THAT SO (stopping myself before I rant)) and... well, I am happy you at least had some sense to put it in S+...
Tidal Rush is literally better than Calamari. There. I said it.
I AGREE ALL THE WAY
(This is late whatever)
HOT DOG all the splatoon songs? And i thought my ranking vid was going to be long!
It's crazy how splatoon 2 went from an eh soundtrack to literally producing banger after banger post update 3.0 and the octo expansion
Into the light is the best of all songs. So nostalgic, reminds me of when I finished Octo expansion and I was so happy :)
I'm loving the vibe of Splatoon 3
The rock music in a post-apocalyptic area is just chefs kiss. 👌👌
5:55 it sounds like the inkling popping off so I love it
Finally a tier list that I can understand!
I really appreciate Metalopod. It was relieving during A rank rage.
It made me go feral along with the squid sisters now or never lol
I would love to see a tier list for the Splatoon 3 soundtrack now that content updates are finished :]
All the music in Splatoon are Godlike Breathtaking but if I have to choose number one... It would be "Into The Light" which is probably the best saddest song since "Rosalina Story Book".
42:50 I cannot listen to this without hearing alpharad say it sounds like Imagine Dragons 😭
48:05 how many times are we gonna hear the Hero Mode jingle 🕺
For Spicy Calimari Inkantation, I’d like to point out that both inkantations fit for their context. Spicy is more emotional for reuniting family, original feels like you’re fighting for your life.
Ink Theory is literally just freeform jazz. It’s the music I also associate when I know a ranked match is gonna be a losing nightmare.
*thump* WHAAA Duh Duh Duh WHAAA
*thump* FIRST THINGS FIRST
The original now or never from splatoon 1 is my favorite of them all. It continually has high pressure rhythm with its drums and it always gave me a sense of urgency playing splatoon 1. Splatoon 2's now or never never made me feel as urgent.
Chara, how did you know I have today 1:12:45 of spare time to watch this? lol My favorite song is Ebb & Flow
Lol thats great
listening to chara singing and saying "dun!" over and over again is so adorable lol
I can't unsee the hard squid beatz charting for splattack (octo) so everytime i hear it I just see the notes flying at 1000 times speed
I feel very strongly about ink me up since it was the first song I heard before I even started playing splatoon 2
Bruh, it was going so well and then tide goes out ended up in a tier
*Pain*
#1: maritime memory
#2: tide goes out
#3: into the light
#4: seaskape
5&6 would definitely be the sashimori songs
#7: probably bomb rush blush
yeah Tide Goes Out is so good but it all comes down to opinions so like what can you do lol
Bruh that cephaloparade disrespect tho
this makes me miss the 1st game so much. music just hits different
Chirpy Chips is the best Splatoon band hands down!!
The base sp2 tracks were so underwhelming, those chirpy chips songs from 3.0 were a return to form
NICE AND DEPRESSING LETS GOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! good prochara out of context moment right there
I didn’t play Splat1, and all of the nostalgia songs you’re naming are what attracted me to play Splat2. I found the Splatune ost before I played any Splatoon games.
It's sad he couldn't rate Anarchy Rainbow, it's probably S+
Honestly, I’d say X-tier
If this video was made after splatoon 3 came out, til depth do us part and sea me now would’ve ranked very high. Maybe anarchy rainbows
what the heck how did neither of the diss pair songs make s+
Fun fact about Shashimori, they don't have a vocalist. The DJ (the young Octoling) takes vocals from other albums and ancient records, implying that it's the only band that has human vocals in-universe.
that is actually really cool
1:04:08 the trailer version of entropical is significantly better than the in-game version since it has the buildup intro and a proper outro, both of which the game had to leave out because it causes the track to go over 1 minute.
this made me realise that splatoon is actually the reason i love experimental music😭 damn it’s ruined me
I don't know if I had any influence on you doing this video, regardless I'm not too disappointed on your tiering!(yes I made that a verb)
Now or never was canonically such a banger that all future bands felt that they couldn't top it so they just covered it
Honestly I really like the use of vocals in 2, it's like a choir except with more styles available depending on the tone of voice.
He has to do this again for splatoon 3's tracks. Not to mention how much better all of the songs got in 3.
1:10:51
LMAOOOOO, THAT'S F- TIER JESUS
that sounds like a now or never if it was played at a squid nursery
Anywho, thanks for some banger content to watch while im sick :D
