I also fell Intro the fireball haze with my level 5 sorcerer(Artemus Black) about 20 years ago. We were clearing out a fully readied enemy in a massive room. In order to get my hero fireball shot off, I readied an action to shoot in the dead center of the room as soon as our barbarian opened the door. As soon as he flung it open, it was glorious watching 25 enemies make Dex saves and downing 17 of those with one shot. Now the only problem was that the entire room had readied an action for the first enemy they saw which was our heroic lovable barbarian. He was riddled with arrows and went down in the first round but he was more than happy to sacrifice for that epic moment. Loved this story as it truly is the defining moment for most spell casters.

I was the DM and we had one of my buddies son join the campaign headstrong as ever running into a trap laiden dungeon headlong almost dying in the process party traps him in a final room he literally pushed through the party to go into 1st finally realizing he could die tears are shed lessons learned, later they hit the dungeons "boss" in an obsidian room they're doing not great when the kid invokes a house rule (free 2nd cantrip cast during turn but it's subject to a d100 wild magic table) nat100 and unbeknownst to him the next words that come from his mouth come true "I'm gonna cast a lvl100 fireball" he exclaims excitedly before he's told anything and he's basically touching the target so he dies with the boss in a large fireball resulting in a circular pool of molten rock and the shadow of his final moments forever burned into the stone walls. Somehow I managed to allow this kid who basically lost it when he found out he could die forever losing his character to kill himself in such an awesome way that he didn't even care that his character was gone

A friend was new to D&D, we had just hit level 5 and we’re fighting a werewolf. My Wizard/Fighter was in melee with the werewolf and I heard him say “I cast fireball on the werewolf.”
I was delighted. He wanted to take it back in horror since I had just tanked a hit from the werewolf and brushed off lycanthropy. But I convinced him it was okay, and survived with a handful of HP, but it was worth it!

I never had a “I cast fireball” moment as I never played a spell slinger in any D&D campaign. However, I did have a “divine smite” moment several in fact as, for those who don’t know, a 5e paladin uses divine smite as spell slots so the more levels in paladin the more and stronger divine smite becomes. I also had the strength and constitution required to be considered a front line soldier, being able to hit and take hits, and it always seemed like I would get the last hit in which of course was a divine smite so the party would always erupt in joyous cheers every time I went in to defeat a boss.

When the red draconic bloodlined sorcerer in my group passed on fireball for lightning I was both surprised and relieved, until I realised I now had an engineer with access to high bursts of electricity to deal with.
I leave the discussions between a lawyer DM (me) and that sorcerer to the imagination, though fortunately the group is fine with the occasional necessary “I am the Law” decisions as they love the story so far.

That fireball reminds me of my fire genasi fighter, who had two very important artifacts, a necklace that turned his fire resistance into immunity, and a cursed axe of fireballs, which would detonate an explosion centred on him whenever he crit on a 18 or higher. That man was a menace, the rest of the party would just take biiiiiiig steps back whenever he drew that axe, as much of the time he would walk into battle and BOOM he was standing over a bunch of charred corpses

One of my favorite moments was during a 2 year long campaign. The DM assaulted the level 5 party with a couple of Ettin and about a dozen giant spiders. We used Max level HP in this campaign so myself, a Paladin and the Cleric had more than enough to survive even a well rolled fireball. After the first round our Mage was down, I revived him only to be downed again, and again, since his turn was between mine and the monsters. Combat was not going well, so I devised a plan. Hold my action until just before the Mage's turn in initiative. I revive him, again, and immediately yell: "FIREBALL THE PARTY!".
Myself and the Cleric would survive, but I was fairly certain everything else would die. Mage rolls almost a perfect 36, kills everyone, including the Cleric, and everything else, except me. Since I had spent every round putting 1 point of LoH on the Mage nothing attacked me as I was not a threat and at full health.

So... my WIzard has fireball... and we've got a necklace of fireballs. We were on the final run of Ice Spire Peak our Monk had convinced a previous group of Dragon Cultists that we were new recruits (visage of the dragon for effect) and they gave us some robes... then I tossed them a Ruby from the necklace and the one one's who passed their dex died the first round of combat without anyone using any ki points or spell slots. We go up a spiral stair case, talk to the next group, maintaining the facde of new recruits and the explosion they heard down stairs was from the mercenary group elsewhere in the ruined keep, they tell us, their new recruits, to wait by the fire and warm up while their entire group of dragon cultists descends the spiral stair case to go deal with the mercs. laughing, I simply tell my DM "Frag Out" and explain that i took another ruby from the necklace and drop it down the stairs. he has a defeated sigh, "Roll Damage" I do and get a 2nd sigh, "Not even going to roll the Dex save here, because even at half damage they're dead, and how do you dodge a explosion in a stone tube?" Allow's me to narrate the kill. "All the cultists frown for a split second as a ruby drops in front of them, lands on a stone step bouces back up to eye level with the first cultist where it seems to freeze in place for a slip second before exploding." We go out on the balcony where 5 high level dragon cultists and Cryovyne are having a discussion... que one more ruby tossed at the back of the skull of the leader of the cult. DM decides "Ok, his back was to you, no way he'd have a dex save. He Ded. One of the cultists nat 1's his dex, DM: "Well, you just removed him from the pattern like it was balefire" Deletes his token. Two others fail, they Ded. CryoVayne failed his save, but you know, dragon so he's not dead. and the last guy passed his check and is not happy. Roll Initiative. My Wizard goes first, queue Wand of Lighting Bolts(crafted with a tusk of Gorthuk after we killed him, think Wand of Magic Missiles but with Lighting spell) with 6 of the 7 charges used, last cultist standing somehow passed this dex save, DM decided that it mean the fireball had knocked him prone and he only took half the spell (He was not looking too good at this point regardless). Cryovane, not happy about getting rocked by a fireball and lighting bolt. Monk kills the last cultist (basically breathed on him), Ranger fires from arrow slits at cryovayne. No one else could get into position for attacks thanks to lair actions, Wizard's next go, Wand of Magic Missiles with 6 of 7 Charges, then ducks back into cover. Cryovyane moves, lair actions prevent everyone but monk getting into melee range, Ranger Ranges again, back to wizard, targets floor to keep monk out of blast range, Fireball. Cryovayne fails Dex, Monk punches, Ranger Ranges and Cryovane dies.

I too was a Fireball addict, but not in D&D directly as the only mage I played in D&D was in a Dragonlance campaign for one session before my folks decided not to take me there anymore. It was a video game series. Anyone remember the Gold Box D&D computer game series that started with a retelling of the Pool of Radiance books based in the Forgotten Realms and then moved onto an original Dragonlance campaign and Savage Frontier campaign in which your lead character entered into a romantic relationship with a prisoner they released? Well, I always had a Mage in every party and Fireball was the best way of wiping out the insane amount of hordes that the games LOVED throwing out at you for every ten steps you took. The only enemies which were immune to Fireball would get zapped by Lightning Bolt instead. It was horrible and sometimes I misclicked and killed my own guys but those games were my addictive drug back before I got into console gaming. ;p

so i'm playing in a pathfinder campaign right now that is running with *all* of the 3rd party content. it's an absolute cluster of a tristalt campaign (that's gestalt but with 3 classes for the uninitiated) My tristalt classes are the following: urban barbarian, cross blooded sorcerer (orc + red dragon), and brutal slayer stalker (at lvl 6 you get STR replacing dex to AC and reflex saves, you get half STR replacement at lvl 2). with a party level of 7 I have two very important feats. Flume fire rage, and a 3rd party feat that gives me another bloodline (solar bloodline). I also have +3 caster levels to fireball, and metamagic I apply to the fireball spell have their total cost reduced by 2 to a minimum of 0. This makes my empowered metamagic free (which also doesn't increase casting time thanks to another 3rd party feat) This brings my fireball damage to the following: 1.5*(10d6)+90
