  • Sky News' Connor Gillies looks at deaths from illegal drug use in Scotland, where people are 15 times more likely to die from narcotics use in deprived areas.
    Analysis from Sky's Data and Forensics shows that almost four times as many people die in Scotland compared to the rest of Great Britain, with other European countries trailing behind.

    for the past 50 years drugs have been a problem in Scotland, I have never used any illegal drug because it would have got in the way of my drinking, had my last drink on 17/09/2017, if alcohol was invented today it would be a Class "A" Drug. Some of my friends have asked me what is the hardest thing I have ever done so I thought about it for a wee while, I said well I have hiked the West Highland Way self sufficient and at speed to break the record, same with The Pennine Way, both were very hard, really hard, hiked over The Himalayas & The Rockies, ran half marathons in competitions with my best time 1Hr 22Mins 26Secs, one of the hardest runs I have ever done, never ever beat that time again, but the hardest thing I have ever done was to STOP DRINKING, I started late in life at 33 but I got hook very easily and it ruined me. (One Day At A Time) now 60 years old and Sober HELPING OTHERS.

      I am 17, never touched or drank a drop of alcohol. No plans on doing so either and I am fine with being teetotal. I have seen how it emasculates and destroys people's lives. I wouldn't take any other illicit drug, so why is alcohol socially acceptable?

    The fact is that a lot of rich people in Scotland (most of whom may be in positions of influence eg in Edinburgh) are very removed from the reality of those at the bottom and do not give a damn to know.

    • @jbjaguar2717
      @jbjaguar2717 6 месяцев назад

      I think that's inaccurate. The ruling party in Edinburgh are well aware of Scotland's drug problem and they genuinely care about fixing it. But it's not an easy problem to solve. It requires tackling entrenched issues with education, mental health, welfare, housing, urban planning, culture, and an inadequate economic structure.
      Also, it's uncomfortable for many people to talk about, but a big part of the problem is how accepting Scotland is towards drugs. We need to increase the stigma attached to the substances whilst decreasing the stigma attached to addicts themselves - the opposite of the current situation, where addicts are seen as losers but drugs in general are seen as cool and desirable.
      We also should understand and combat the harmful influences of China, Iran and America, from where most of these drugs (or their chemical components) originate.

      The government DID step in. They brought a bill t9 decriminalise addiction and teat it as a health issue. Westminster overturned it.
      The SG turned a blind eye to the clean-needle exchanges and vans where people could inject safely; the Tories in London instructed the Tories in Scotland to insist that the law is applied to the letter and banned the clean needle vans - hence the upsurge in amputations and deaths.

    Provide free drugs and safe spaces to use them to anyone that wants/needs them. This allows addicts to avoid stealing and becoming criminals to feed their addiction, reducing crime in the area. This takes away the revenue stream of drug dealers, and the incentive to recruit more customers. This gives addicts the chance to access other services, and the chance to gain some control back over their lives. We should be treating addiction as an illness, not a crime, but also we should accept that some people may never get clean, and help them manage their illness as safely as possible. We all lose when we treat addicts as criminals.

      Yes, it should happen. One problem is that cannabis dealers can also be dealing in harder drugs. There are also periods where hash is broken down and mixed with harmful ingredients to make it go further. 9 USA states have it legal and there is a tax on it. Dont know how the tax is used but there is obvious other drug taking and problems it could be used on.

      Because it's everywhere in Scotland. Literally everywhere. The Police haven't bothered to tackle it for years and years, so it's been a free run on the entire country to use it as a dumping ground. Comes over in the boats from South America, into Ireland, then into Scotland. They haul it in on the fishing boats, and nobody checks them so it's very easy to do.
      And yes, there's no such thing as recovery services in Scotland. All the money for that was stripped away in the early 2010s because the money was redistributed and put towards the SNP independence campaign leading up to the referendum in 2014. Back then Salmon was SNP leader and Sturgeon was Health Minister, but nobody battered an eye lid because the truth is people aren't really going to notice or give a damn about a bunch of addicts losing access to recovery treatment. When the funding for all of that was stripped away, there was nothing to replace it, so that's when the numbers started creeping up.
