Originally released in Japan as the first installment in the now long-running SaGa series, this game was released in the west as the Final Fantasy Legend trilogy in order to boost sales. In honor of this, I've named the protagonists (who have no canon names) after various Final Fantasy characters in order to, um...boost the popularity of this longplay.
Boasting innovative mechanics for its time (from the mind behind Final Fantasy II), Legend allows you to choose four characters from 3 different races: equipment-reliant humans, magic-using mutants, and evolving monsters. No races "level up" in the traditional sense; mutants gain random abilities & stats after battles, humans use consumable items to increase stats, and monsters gain abilities & stats by consuming the meat of slain monsters.
If you're wondering why I kept using stat-increasing items on my human past 99 points: the stat actually caps at 255, but only displays up to 99, which is why he ends up dealing insane damage after the stat increases. -

Omg I looooooved the music, this takes me waaaay back. Loved this freakin game!
Thank you so much for uploading a playthrough of this game! For so many years, I could not remember the name of this game...all I could remember as was "the game with an albatross in it"... then a compilation video led me to this video. Now I feel like a hole in my memory has been restored. Once again, thank you for this upload, you beautiful human being!
man when i first bought the game boy there were no english RPGs for it. the first one was gargoyle's quest but that was more action adventure. so when this game came out i literally passed out. i begged my mom to buy it for me for xmas. and i remember spending all xmas playing this game. i wish i was 11 yrs old again. those were the days. no school work, no worries, just gaming
YES!!!
Same happened here! Awesome game!
You are so correct. When I got my game boy I got this and Tetris and I don't think I ever played may game other than this. I wish I could go back in time
gargoyles quest was great, but the random encounters were a joke.
Yes, yes, yes!!!!
I've played legends 2 as a kid on Gameboy and that was the first and only rpg game where I've spent hundreds of hours replaying it. I think I've played it 14 times at least. one of the greatest classic portable rpg on my list.
This game and music makes my heart ache with nostalgia. Such amazing music! And the Mutant Female's sprite is the cutest 114 pixels I've ever seen
ditto
Indeed
This sure brings back fond old memories. I used to play this on long flights between the West Coast to SE Asia. Good way to pass the time. I notice Medusa's nips show up in this video. I don't remember seeing them on the tiny Game Boy screen, even when using the lighted magnifier. Garlic is an odd enemy. Must attack by using bad breath. Somehow, the clam looks like an octopus. This was one of my favorite games.
Man, the music on Final Fantasy slays everything!
This was one of the first video game I have played and I'm thankful to finally learn the name of it. Eight year old me didn't make much process in the game, but I'm determined to play and finish this game now. Once again, thank you.
You beat the last boss without using the SAW, anyone who can do that kicks ass. When I played the cart it took me AGES to finally beat him, I didn't even know the SAW worked on him. I also didn't know stats went past 99, so that probably made it harder for myself...
i was never able to beat the final boss, the creator
i just remember he looked weird as hell in that giant black hat, like an evil amish person......
What the music in this game lacks in bit count, it more than makes up for in heart. Hits me right in the feels.
This is one of the best RPGs I've played. I wish there was a PC port.
Load an Emulator... ;-)
Well also there is a Nintendo switch port featuring revamped versions featuring all of them, lol.
collection of saga final fantasy legend is available on steam.
Can't wait to purchase this for my gameboy color I found in my sisters closet. I had a fun time cleaning out battery acid...but now I can purchase games and have fun with it before selling.
Once you put on Kings Armor you invincible through the first level. Love this game even though I never beaten the Creator
Use saw... It may take u 3,4 attempts, but you will see 'creator went to pieces' finally
Loved this game as a kid!
Man I wish I had this game when I was growing up in the 90's, didn't think too much of it from the Nintendo Power until Pokemon Blue & Red storm the stores. Very challenging game, I would play this if I still had my Gameboy Advance SP and order this game today. As for the series, I'm glad they're keeping it alive with the recent release of Romancing SaGa 2 and more upcoming ones in the near future.
oh damn.. I had this game when I was a kid, but it was all Japanese. I had no idea what I was doing so I didn't get far. It was still a blast. I drew elaborate maps and tried to figure out things that way.
The Game which inspired the Creator of Pokemon to create... the PokeMonsters :D
Nobuoooo! You know midi music is done well when you have the wavey sing song notes.
Wait, meat of skeleton? Skeletons have no meat on them.
Spike Riley decaying remains before totally being stripped? Maybe marrow (too)
robots have meat
@@brycejacobsen1371 Maybe the robots picked up some meat from the supermarket. 😄
@Stan Brule tree meat
i used to feed the meat to my mutant characters as it seemed to give them extra stats/abilities, i found that i didn't like monsters in this game at all :P
I remember being baffled by this game as a small child. I made it into the tower and thought I had beaten the game. I stopped on pressure from relatives. Would be nice to beat it today.
Yes! The same for me. I’d enter the tower and found it so confusing from there. Not sure I ever made it to the second area. Just got lost in the tour for hours.
King Shield owns a shield he doesn't want to give you. Hero is the name of a town with a statue of a hero named Hero.
After a couple things like that, I became pretty sure the translators were having fun being so blunt and not just being lazy.
I've only played the sequel so the I can somewhat relate to this but... hey, the music is good
I listened to the music with a headset. Some of the harmony notes are slightly out of tune. Sounds much better through the computer speakers though, not to mention through the Game Boy speaker.
I found my brother's Final Fantasy Legend game. I am going to put the game in and try it.
Used to really enjoy playing this as a kid. I didn’t get Pokemon until slightly later than most kids, so when most of them were playing that i ended up playing this as operationally it’s quite similar. I could never progress after defeating the king though. I had a ridiculously strong team, I just didn’t know what to do, and it was the days before ready access to the internet to find out.
When I was playing this on my Gameboy Color, I had read up on GameFAQs that the stat cap i sactually at 255, so when I got super loaded I bought a ton of stat potions with the intention of maxing out my character. I could only fit I believe four or five in my inventory at a time, so it took forever buying and applying them on repeat. Once I finally finished applying them to my main character, I saved, and then... realized that I had accidentally applied 1 extra over the limit and reset my stat back down to zero. I had to do it all over again. It was painful.
This whole script reads like a direct translation from Japanese to English with only the slightest check for readability and grammar. The translators really didn't seem to differentiate between actual Japanese and Japanese loanwords.
Also later, there's an item called "CATCRAW."
... That said, this translation's not that bad. Also, this game has a fairly grim plot, for the time. That always kinda shocked me.
Why does it sound like a remix version of pokemon red
they snuck in the word redbull in here before it was a meme!
There was a bottled energy drink in Thailand called Krating Daeng (Red Bull) that was introduced in 1976. But yeah, I noticed the term was slipped in the game too.
I used to play this when i was little i still have the game boy and the floppy disk
It has a wonderswan port as well
The weapons that the character equips has limited uses until it break? Feels like the older Fire Emblem games...
Protip: Equip the items to the Robot character and sleep at an inn, the weapon will have half its durability restored.
I never said what he was doing was wrong, he was playing in a way I wouldn't and I would say a fair chunk of people would, which is fine. I don't have the balls to not use the King Armour. Also, if I was a true expert, I would be bitching and moaning about how he doesn't have his monster as a WARRIOR before he left the first world. He made the game more difficult for himself, and props to him for that.
I also complimented the video, so keep your passive aggressiveness to yourself thank you.
Could you save your progress on this or did you have to play straight through?
Man this game. Never knew how to get past the Phoenix. If I remember correctly.
So nostalgic
Is this a Saga game in Japan?I think I do remember this but it was called something else.,Great game.
3:09 "He don't"
Truly a Legend!!
Is Kain a shapeshifter?
Berry I did not know there was The Final Fantasy Legend for Game Boy
There's three of them. There's also a Final Fantasy Adventure which is really fun but nothing like the rest of them.
So your playthrough does it right? Put the link here so we can all watch it and see how it's done.
always thought it's funny that you can get meat of skeleton considering a skeleton is ... you know... a skeleton.
😂
The is the only Final Fantasy Legend video I have seen where you start off with a sword rather than just 0 GP, is the one by user Nintendo Complete. Someone told me only the female human can get this sword. Is that correct? How do you start with a sword instead of nothing like usual?
Ha! I used "Kain" as well :)))
Nostalgic
17:10 man, heroes in this game sure are ruthless! O__O
They kill other people like Bravely Default characters!
I had this game when I was 9, I couldn’t figure out how to win and thought this was the hardest game to pla
I'll be honest, sort of wish the game told you what mutants gain from fighting.
Maybe it's the marrow.
gosh, was this painful to watch, but thank you for uploading.
-use weakest weapons
-functional management of inventory
-not grind monsters in forest
-buy weakest weapons
-not wear king's equip
-equip shields
-buy and use weakest weapons
-not know monster and monster meat interactions
-wasting exspensive AOE spells on the weakest of lone enemies
basically, watching someone grinding poorly.
Maybe this one was meaty somewhere :)
Who translated this?
I still kicked its ass, didn't I?
I get Pokémon vibes from this
If you ate a zombie’s meat, would you be a cannibal who just ate a piece of rotten flesh?
Yep, the human male still looks like he's wearing a mask as his face even seeing it now grown up lol. This game was not easy, I remember getting really far when I was a kid just to have one of my characters die. When they die they're gone for good at least that I remember.
I remember before the very first boss at 1:18:01 having my mutant male maxed on str using the strong item on him over and over...made for a pretty funny boss fight ;)
Oh weapons degrading, bad memories. Just wanted to get a glimpse of the game again won't watch the whole thing. Nothing like spending an hour in a tower getting to a boss just to have no weapons left and no way to get out.
I can see why Japan never wanted to release any more games in the series after that, and by that I mean the Romancing SaGa series.
There are some sequels for PS1 and PS2. Recently they even did a sequel for the PS4, although it's Japan-exclusive.
This is not really FF. It is the first game in the SaGa series. It was only released in America as an FF title. Makai Tōshi Sa·Ga.
Ysk Havana Check the description, friend.
Just like how the first game in the Mana series is called Final Fantasy Adventure in the west.
Oh god this video is a horror movie.
"NONONONO EQUIP KING ARMOUR WHAT ARE YOU DOING"
"NO DON'T BUY SHIELDS!"
The expert in me cringes at every turn, but it's still a good playthrough.
Arc the Cad : Right, I wonder why he didn't use the King armor. I used it along with the King sword as I grind the 1st level
So sweet that King's equip, all-the-while pretending to be the King, cleaning up the Land but all for nought as it
continually spawns more monsters to grind.
Watching that grind was painful as well and I still wish I had my copy still...
I know this is a six-year-old comment, but I was mostly just trying to show off me using as many in the game as I could, which is the purpose of a longplay. It's not really about min-maxing, unless the game calls for it, and this one doesn't as I showed in the longplay.
You should skip the fights and the menus bureaucracy
Come see my review of why this game is so great. In fact, neither of the sequels are as engaging.
Man, a lot of characters die in this game, doesn't they?. And well, first thing's first
, nice soundtrack. Talking about the game itself... is weird, i mean, i can understand the "plot", yes, but man, the dialogues
on this one are short and weak for a rpg. I also found a lot of errors in-game, not like serious bugs, but still, pretty common. In terms of difficulty, it depends on how you build your team. Making all of them humans makes the game easier, but you wouldn't get to experience the game's class system at his max, which is one of his strong points... kinda. To be the first installment in the series it's not as bad as some say, but that does not mean it doesn't has his errors. I would describe it has
a "curious" first experiment.
Use chainsaw on creator
FF Legend owns FF7 in every level
It even owns FF6? XD
No it doesn’t lmao
Pain in my ears
Has anyone here actually beat this game?
Meat of Slime... yucky! 🤮
this game was so fucking annoying!..but i guess i liked it
Man this game was hot garbage.
This game sucks. On opposite day.
Bahahahah!
I really don't understand this game... so much reading and the battles are completely lame. Is this for programmers or something? I remember I had this game as a kid and lent it to my friend and didn't care to get it back. I really don't understand the appeal of these RPG games, like Zelda or Final Fantasy. Please, someone explain it to me in 30 words or less.
