Mario vs Sonic was video game mascot war of the early 90's, but in time, Mario has came out on top. So what went wrong for Sonic? Sonic failed to innovate as Mario continued to grow and change.
This failure to change doomed Sonic as many of his games were way to similar as each Mario game borrows from the past yet is always different.

As a sonic fan myself, I COMPLETELY AGREE with this. The main reason is cuz Mario always keep his platforming skills and well made spin-offs while sonic keeps changing gameplay for weird gimmicks and poor execution. His speed is there but the momentum and physics-based platforming isn’t. SEGA and sonic team need to fix that to make the sonic fun again and remove unnecessary gimmicks but I don’t think they’ll listen…..unless they try to make it work.
But most of that is necessary in order to make a great and appealing game that didn't look like the last.

Here’s more reasons on why Mario is better than Sonic imo:
1. More polished and fun games(excluding Sunshine but I’ll play that over 06 at any day)
2. Characters that are actually consistent(Sonic and the other characters starts to become inconsistent during the Meta Era)
3. Games that are actually trying to innovate something new(When Sonic games innovate, they always fall flat in many circumstances)
4. Stories that don’t have cringe dialogue(Looking at you, Meta Era stories)
5. Music that’s not cheesy and loud(Most people think Sonic music is better because of this but I beg to differ)
6. Power ups are better than multiple playable characters(Power ups actually add new abilities to the character you’re playing as, but Sonic barely has power ups except for his Super form)
7. Better spin offs(Most Sonic spin offs are rip offs)
8. Has a RPG that’s actually good(Sonic only had one and it was a failure)
9. Has a movie that actually respects the source material and is animated(Sonic’s movies are mostly live action and have way too much cringey jokes like Sonic floss dancing)
That’s just my opinion but I respect other people’s opinions on Mario.

I like Sonic more than Mario and I like Spyro more than Crash Bandicoot but I don't actually hate Mario or Crash I'm just more into Sonic the Hedgehog and Spyro the Dragon.
I wouldn't mind if Sonic and Mario got a real Crossover Videogame Series that's not mini game based or Sports Based.
But action and adventure.
We also need a real Spyro and Crash Crossover Videogame Series that's also not mini game based but also action and adventure.
I even would love to see Sonic and Spyro both get a Crossover Videogame Series of them with Jason Griffith and Tom Kenny as Sonic Shadow and Spyro.

For me, the gameplay and the narrative in a video game must be at hand, if it doesn't have a good story it must have a very good gameplay, charismatic characters and good level design, now with the case of Sonic and Mario, well, what can I say, Although Mario was my childhood, I prefer Sonic for many things, such as its soundtrack, the level design of several of its games, the sensation of speed and the aspect criticized by many, the history of several of these, Sonic unlike Mario Apart from having a great lore and wide universe, it has very interesting narratives with several positive messages and good character development (as in frontiers), which is something that few platformers see, I really don't understand why people are annoyed by the fact that sonic has stories with serious moments, they always come up with the argument that "oh, it's very edgy, sonic shouldn't have this type of plot" and yes, several of the 3d sonic games do have good level design, such as adventure, boost (excluding forces) and frontiers

I'm a big fan of Sonic and a good connoisseur of Super MariO. About Mario I saw a gameplay of Odyssey on RUclips, and it was a fun game from what I saw. You're right. It would be nice if Sonic's games tried to add something new to the chapter like Mario's do. Maybe adding, I don't know, something like investigative sections with Team Chaotix or a moral choice system. Those would be cool.

you know the more I think about this the more conflicting factors I find. The fundamental problem with trying to prove which series is better is that, yes while both series are a video game series, one is more valued as a video game, and the other is more valued for… well, everything else. There’s a reason why sonic is still relevant to this day. If you need proof of this, look forward to super smash Bros, and SegaSammy. In super smash bros in the punch out stage, if you look into the background Mario’s labeled as “Mr. video game himself” implying that he’s at his highest regard as a video game character. On the other hand, there's SegaSammy, which is a part of Sega if you don’t know, but anyways, they have a web page, called the constellation which is basically the things that they see are valuable to them and in what capacity, and sonic is one of them but not as a successful video game franchise, or even as a source of income, but as a “video game software character”, meaning sonic was more valuable as a symbol to children, then as a video game franchise.

I can agree with alot of points in this video. Overall Mario does have a better track record than Sonic. But I don't know man. Sonic is just cool as all hell. Mario can sometimes be just too sanitized. Yes it does happen with Sonic as well but the theming of the world is just kind of better in alot of ways. And you can not tell me that SA1 has boring movement. Also Sonic 06 is a dumpster fire of a game but it's level design isn't bad. Quite the opposite actually. Glitches drag it down. But it's just my opinion.
Well, as a fan of both, Sonic Adventure 1&2 were Sonic’s storytelling at it’s finest. I don’t like how Sonic is the only character that matters (because that limits the creativity in the storytelling). And although Sonic Frontiers did bring back Playable Tails, Knuckles and Amy, the story is a major disservice to what we know of them in the past, not helping that the game has Ian Flynn involved, who in my honest opinion is the worst Modern Sonic writer ever… yes, worse than Graff and Pontac, who at least tried to make Sonic more of the lovable jokester in Sonic Lost World (crazy statement, I know, but it’s better than those two carrying over Sonic’s apathy in the Post-Adventure 2 Era to act that way in Sonic Colors).
Legend of Zelda has way better storytelling especially the manga.

I mean, sure, Mario has some discontinuity, but it’s not as in-your-face as Sonic’s. Mario has Modern DK being the same as Game Boy DK while Cranky is the OG Arcade DK, Sonic has Knuckles leaving the Master Emerald unguarded without enough booby traps and Tails being scared of Chaos 0, disregarding that he could’ve fought Chaos 4 (alongside Sonic and Knuckles, perhaps).

But they usually fail compared to Mario.
Good video, you gave a lot of fair criticisms, and some I even agree with, however I do wanna point out a few things, mainly:
1-while yes, Sonic 2 doesn't introduce a lot of new things by "number", I don't think it's fair to just count the number of new things added and go by that, especially not when what Sonic 2 introduced was what made the Sonic formula, because you see, in Sonic 1 most of the level design was either basic slow platforming or just flat out random at times, Sonic 2 however had multi-tiered level design where the higher route is harder to reach, but faster, setting up the whole time-attack gameplay Sonic still has even to this day, Sonic 1 had that but not to the same degree, Sonic 2 also introduced the spindash which meant you didn't need to backtrack a little just to try to gain speed, which was a game changer.
2-I don't understand what you meant with "Sonic Adventure held back", especially not when one of the biggest crticisms the game got, and still gets, is how it feels bloated with how many new things it tried.

Can't cover everything. Wanted to keep it centered around the beginning of the 2 franchises to around 2006.
At least Mario Galaxy 2 introduced new level concepts and powers, while Colors introduced a gimmick that ripped off Mario’s power ups.

Sonic has better stories, characters, bosses, cutscences, and with sonic frontiers being much better. i'd say that sonic has better tv shows, movies and games. Overall Mario has better gameplay than sonic's gameplay but stories, characters, cutscenes, music, levels goes to sonic while for Mario it's just power ups and gameplay so sonic wins and is much better in my opinion than Mario

Mario is a doctor and plumber, sonic made his own plane before meeting tails. Literally Nintendo is not making any more Mario games. The tv shows are better than Marios, the movies are better than Marios, the music is better than Marios. All I can say good things for Mario is that his gameplay in the games are better than sonic's and that Mario+ rabbits sparks of hope the cutscene are better due to ubisoft making the game.
