Valve was never a video game company. They are a software company that just so happens to make games. Their launcher being the best one out there, to a point of other less consumer friendly launchers want to sue Steam for being a monopoly, is a pointer that they are a software company. Each Half Life game was more about flexing than it was a video game for Valve. Half Life 1 proved to the world that 3D games can be great. Most other 3D games at that point were either 2D rendered into 3D, or they weren't that great and lackluster(still seen as a gimmick). Half Life 2 proved that a good physics engine to a game can improve gameplay. If you replay HL2 and stop and look at the many puzzles in the linear story, you can very much tell that was the goal. Realistically I'd say there's too many of those physics puzzles. They are great and fun, but there is too many to not unsee the Valve Flex. ....so what would Half Life 3 prove......I always said it would be VR years before Half Life Alyx would release and sure enough, Half Life Alyx was a VR game. It's not the elusive 3 we were looking for, but it was in fact a Half Life game. I haven't been able to get through it all, but it's a really good game so far. My main complaint is that the protagonist we play isn't silent. They waited too long to do a game like this so we unfortunately don't have Eli's og voice actor(I mean it's hard to sound younger than it does to sound older so it's understandable). Kleiner's VA is getting old and I think he's older than Gaben if he didn't already pass, so that "3" is unlikely with our beloved cast and continuation of Gordon's story. It also doesn't help that the main writer for the HL series, Mark Laidlaw, no longer works there. He posted a "fanfiction" titled "Epistle 3" and I recommend every HL fan to read it. There's videos on RUclips that read them for you, with fixed names, that has accompanied fan art that actually hits the feels. I'm not sure if Kelly Bailey, the main composer of the music, still works there. It wouldn't shock me if he left too. Also I wouldn't really worry about trying to get this newer generation of young gamers. It's a big market for sure, but they aren't the ones who got Gaben to the Lord status. A lot of the younger audience is so used to being skrewed over by what most AAA game companies put them through nowadays. This young generation hasn't experienced buying Adobe Photoshop before they decided to go subscription based. They don't know what it is like to buy a complete game, nor do they understand the computers/software. I know some are really good, but the video game industry has become mainstream so expect normies to gobble the bloatware, and shovelware no matter how bad it is as a product/software. What I would worry about is the pressure to make it meet the expectations that we know we have put on them and all of us. Be honest. If it doesn't end on a good note or doesn't meet even our expectations, we wouldn't hold it so high(look at how high it was held as a meme). If they messed up HL3, it would be a bad day for the whole company and the sign that the entire industry is slowly falling. It's easy to mess it up when the stakes are high. It would send shockwaves through the gaming industry if they nail it. I hope to see that day come. I know 1 of my uncles isn't around to see it, and my other uncles have got some gray on them now. We would all buy that "3". I'd argue that they could make a good multiplayer mode to tag alongside the game. That would help to keep players interested and invested. I don't like the idea of Half Life getting microtransactions, but it would be likely since that's the real money maker nowadays. Valve doesn't have shareholders to please, but look at CS cases. The knives cost so much, and Steam still gets a cut of the sale. They could add loyalty items specific to other valve games that you have in your library as items in HL3. I haven't heard the term "Boomer Shooter" before and let's be real. They are not real gamers. A real gamer can appreciate games and the relevance they have no matter their age. They aren't as fun as modern dopamine factories/online casinos we call games today, but they are programed to be that way. Activision's EOMM system that replaced the SBMM system in multiplayer is the best example. They literally have a patent on it. You can look it up in the patent registry and that'll tell you why modern CoD sucks. Jumping from WaW to MW2019 is a culture shock. Not only censorship, but it's all rigged. Still fun, but your KD WL ratios are tampered with because of it. LazyPurple said it best in "How it FEELS to play Sniper" "What if I have never headshot anybody and it's ALL a lie?" Just because you weren't alive yet, doesn't mean you can't enjoy the games of yesteryear. I wasn't born yet when Toejam and Earl came out, yet I still had fun playing it. That live music was a big deal back then and it was hella funky. If you only listen to that, that's fine. It wasn't really groundbreaking tbh other than the music. I do hope for HL3, but I'm not holding my breath. It was an awesome gift to get HLAlyx out of nowhere, and it did prove that Valve was actually working on a Half Life game.....well and the Index. Though you can't have a big reveal of the hardware if you don't have some software to put it to use.😂
To be honest if Galen doesn’t want to make half life 3 then he should come out and break the silence except the sad things is I think he wants half life 3 to thrive more than we know it’s his vision after all and he wants to end it with one last magnum opus but with the fan base dying who would be there to receive the news the only thing we can do is support him through and through By staying and caring because our community may be dying but we have been there to keep the dream alive and more than ever If we want half life 3 we need to still be vocal enough for Gabe to know it’s worth it while letting them develop more software until He makes that break through and can make his dream real #lovegaben
You know, with Half Life Alyx Gaben shown that he didnt abandon Half Life franchise at all. The ending scene actually have a little continuation where Ellie is resurrected by GMan instead of emloyement of Alyx. HLA added huge ammount of things to lore, and they are amazing. Half Life episode 3 is not fully abandoned project: we can still have hope and its not pointless
I'm 19,soon 20 now...I was born in the year HL2 came out and only last year I bought the Valve Complete pak and played through HL,HL2,the Episodes,L4D 1&2...and play TF2 till this day...and boi...I'd LOVE to finally see the day HL3 comes out...even if we have HLAlyx,still not many of us can play it bc. like myself they don't have a VR headset...and honestly I hold nothin' against Valve,but I hope we'll get HL3 someday,before the Legend Gaben passes...but I hope he doesn't,still it's a risk that he will,bc. my Father passed at the age of 50 from an heart faliure this January and it still hurts...but I hope we'll get something someday from Valve to chew on and immerse into a world that can hopefully capture the imagination and time of the people to flee from the currently catastrophic world of ours...since rn it really looks hopeless everywhere one looks,wars here and there...WW3 on the horizon...and that's not the only thing bc. on the micro scale people are having so many problems that they kinda deserve something to just take immerse themselves and deal with everything else later,since one has to deal with problems constantly like I do...and it sux...so hope we'll get something that could capture our imagination and hopefully bring us back in time with nostalgia for the better times...ooh I miss the better times...and I know many like me do as well...

Finally, someone said it. Yes, Valve's inability to make Half Life 3 20 YEARS after the release of Episode 2 is a sign of pure cowardice and incompetence. They are afraid that the product they will release after forcing people to wait 20 years will underdeliver and disappoint so many fans that it will deal a massive blow to their stocks, so they, plain and simple, will never do it. DO NOT wait for Half Life 3. It is much better to wait for modders to make their own Half Life games. I feel like if valve were going to make the third Half Life game they'd have to massively go overboard with what they had planned. I think they should start out with the planned out episode 3 plot but when Gordon gets to the borealis rather than having the plan to crash it into the combine world, the combine takes hold of it and ends up pulling the main characters like Alyx and Barny into the combine's home world. Then for most of the game you are facing off against the biggest and best the combine can throw at you whilst battling across there world to reclaim the ship. It would give valve the freedom to create a new world unlike anything we'd seen before and would after 20 years finally have the finishing power to change the industry once again.
The problem is that they view half life as an innovation of technology so they wish to wait and wait until they see their chance But the question is what are they waiting for and how are we to entertain ourselves when our community’s final wish is viewed as a joke but we must push through this age of dark and hold on to the hope for a masterpiece #lovegaben

Valve already had a bad release, it was called Artefact, and they'll have another with Deadlock. The last time Valve released a game that wasn't a sequel, tech demo or trend chasing was Left 4 Dead. Valve is no stranger to failure, we just give them survivorship bias. They gave us SteamDeck but they also gave us the Steam Controller and SteamMachine.

Well, what kind of gameplay would be revolutionary for a video game nowadays. If i had to bet, probably some improved VR experience with some modern AI component, those technologies are the best we got currently. But would that actually make people say wow, this is incredible and stick with them for a long time. When i first played Half Life 1, it was in 2003 i didnt know anything about it, that it was revolutionary, i found it along with my CS 1.6, it was unexpected. I thought, what the f is this game?? Me and my friend laughed actually cause we found scientists funny and this whole world ridiculous 😂 The first impression was that the graphics were terrible, but for me, being a PC gamer less than a year at that point, there was some strange mystery and something that no other game have had quite like Half Life. I didnt know it at the time, the power of a sillent protagonist, and how this game allowed the player to create his own perspective on the game, rather than live through the perspective of a protagonist. I was Gordon Freeman, and i didnt know it at the time the impoerance of that. And as i was figuring out things allong the way, the more and more i was engaged in this whole universe, and before you know it Half Life had become my favorite game. And then shortly after Half Life 2 released, and you young people out there cant really imagine how the game felt in 2004. It was unreal experience, and as a fan of the first game, that feeling was amplified 10X. How can Valve replicate this feeling to a Half Life fan again?. That is the real question. How to reinvent the new standard? Something that will be remembered as a measuring stick for most FPS sci fi games that will be released in the next 20 years or so. No one knows. Maybe Half Life 3 shouldnt be a video game at all, who knows. But what then it could be?

the half life franchise is my 2d favorite franchise behind gears of war but saying that eli's death was sad is a bit of a stretch

Well, what kind of gameplay would be revolutionary for a video game nowadays. If i had to bet, probably some improved VR experience with some modern AI component, those technologies are the best we got currently. But would that actually make people say wow, this is incredible and stick with them for a long time. When i first played Half Life 1, it was in 2003 i didnt know anything about it, that it was revolutionary, i found it along with my CS 1.6, it was unexpected. I thought, what the f is this game?? Me and my friend laughed actually cause we found scientists funny and this whole world ridiculous 😂 The first impression was that the graphics were terrible, but for me, being a PC gamer less than a year at that point, there was some strange mystery and something that no other game have had quite like Half Life. I didnt know it at the time, the power of a sillent protagonist, and how this game allowed the player to create his own perspective on the game, rather than live through the perspective of a protagonist. I was Gordon Freeman, and i didnt know it at the time the impoerance of that. And as i was figuring out things allong the way, the more and more i was engaged in this whole universe, and before you know it Half Life had become my favorite game. And then shortly after Half Life 2 released, and you young people out there cant really imagine how the game felt in 2004. It was unreal experience, and as a fan of the first game, that feeling was amplified 10X. How can Valve replicate this feeling to a Half Life fan again?. That is the real question. How to reinvent the new standard? Something that will be remembered as a measuring stick for most FPS sci fi games that will be released in the next 20 years or so. No one knows. Maybe Half Life 3 shouldnt be a video game at all, who knows. But what then it could be?
