Xi Jinping's 48-hour plan to invade Taiwan: 'China's military is expanding' | Defence in Depth

  • The ripples from the war in Ukraine have spread far and wide; they’ve even reached the South China Sea - so it’s time to talk about Taiwan.
    China wants Taiwan to be reunified with the mainland, and it is said that no Chinese president would be able to stay in position if they renounced their claim to Taiwan.
    So Xi Jinping is on a one-way journey - there’s no status quo here. He’s not going to allow Taiwan to exist as an independent sovereign state and doesn’t hide his view that Taipei will unify with the communist mainland.
    It’s just a question of when, not if.

    I think the majority of people around the world doesn't really understand what kind of impact would war in Taiwan have on our lives - Taiwan makes 65% of the world's semiconductors and almost 90% of the advanced chips. One cannot produce or repair modern cars, computers, phones, washing machines, toasters, etc... without these chips. Not to mention the power, water and internet infrastructure. I cannot imagine a darker scenario than this, it would bring the world to a halt.

      China's naval fleet only allows for 50,000 soldiers to be landed per run, Which is roughly 100,000 per day on 2 trips, providing all of their boats make it to the island. Unfortunately, however, This does provide very limited numbers of vehicles to be landed, and restricts China to 4x4's, Trucks, Lightly armoured infantry fighting Vehicles and light tanks. China needs to seize a port to be able to roll off it's heavier equipment. Taiwan's infrastructure is not very easy to navigate. I've lived there, and it would be absolute hell for an invading force. Especially Taipei. There's metro tunnels all over the city, Above city Metro lines, there's open sewerage tunnels, Bunkers, Hills, Mountains, Suspended roads that only allow access to certain points. China won't take Taiwain in 48 hours. Even at peak, and if the west did nothing, Taiwan would hold it's own defences for months. They've been prepared for a Chinese invasion for nearly 75 years. Ukraine had 8 to prepare against Russia and they thought that Russia would not attack them, so they didn't act on it as well as they could.

Currently President Tsai is in the US to talk war whilst at the same time her opponent, the ex president of Taiwan, Ma, is in China to talk peace. Taiwanese will choose in the next presidential election in 2024, either they want to choose war theme or peace theme, and that will be the essence of their campaign from now on.

  • @julioareck
    @julioareck Год назад +346

    OK, but those hypothetical 48 hours come AFTER mobilizing enough personnel and equipment to the Chinese coast to prepare for the actual invasion. Let's remember, as a reference, that Russia spent weeks amassing troops, tanks, etc near the Ukrainian border (although denying it was because they wanted to invade, which of course was a lie) before they could in fact invade. Such big movements in China wouldn't go undetected by the US and the rest of the world, and I doubt they will do the same mistake they did about ignoring the Russian preparations for an invasion. The success of a Chinese invasion depends on not giving time to the West to come in help for Taiwan before the take over could be secured, the "fait accompli", and that's the tricky part, because Taiwan is trying to arm itself to make an invasion too hard and too costly to be worth trying, and the West is watching Chinese movements very closely. So that 48-hour invasion is a very, very difficult feat to accomplish.

      Not exactly. Because China can simply build up a massive number of troops and make moves like they are about to invade. Then do nothing.
      Rinse and repeat about a dozen times. Which is something China has the funds to do. Till the West stops reacting to the build ups.
      Then attack on the 13th or the 14th build up.

Either akin to the ones that Ukraine used to attack the Russian fleet in Sevestapol or more likely something better optimized since they have time to prepare and put conventional manufacturing into the task. Like semi-submersibles to make them harder to detect and destroy, maybe with an automated terminal dive to blow up under the keel instead of exploding alongside, for example.

    The most interesting aspect of this discussion is the critical nature of the timeline and the 48 hr window to resolve this before western intervention becomes a reality. Look how long the build up to for Iraq was. This was not a lack of resolve but the reality of timing to get forces into theatre. However, even this 48 hr window is no guarantee, preparations for a full scale invasion would be on a scale fair beyond exercises and very visible so the question is what would the US and mainly Japan do in such a period seeing this happening. The other scenario not discussed is a blockade where China simply rings the island and dares Taiwan and the West to do anything about it. Once their military is at a certain capability this becomes a more effective option as it can be combined with a propaganda war and cyber attack. China’s attempts at undermining and dominating its political “opponents”, pretty much everyone, support such an approach.

    • @rogerkant3696
      @rogerkant3696 Год назад +4

      Also, do not forget Russia, once the Taiwan question is resolved then the next largest piece of unfinished business is Northern Manchuria, otherwise known as Vladivostok, Primorsky kray ceded under duress by the Ching Dynasty to Russia by treaty in 1860 in parallel to the Opium Wars. This is a warm water port on the Sea of Japan and incredibly strategically valuable to China geographically. I am sure China has not forgotten this. Nor has Russia as it would threaten their whole grip on the Russian Far East and its vast mineral resources.

    The war game scenarios run by a US defense think tank have been very useful. As a result, the focus has shifted primarily to LRASM missiles as the deciding factor in a PLA rush across the strait to take the island. The following capabilities are being put into place to maximize the missile output against Chinese vessels:
    Nuclear-powered submarines provided to the Australian Navy
    Modernized engines retrofitted to the B52 fleet. These bombers will have the capability to eject palates of LRASM by parachute, which can then launch a dozen missiles at a time.
    Missile stations being built on nearby Japanese controlled islands
    The introduction of the B21 Raider will allow for a large battery of LRASM to be fired at close range. The B21 will have the capability to operate in close proximity to the Taiwan strait without being targeted. PLA forces will assume its presence but will be unable to defend against it - presenting a massive deterrent without exposing more vulnerable ship to incoming missile fire from the mainland of China.

    There’s no new information here that isn’t already circulating within existing discourse. It mentions Chinese military power increasing, their desire to unify with Taiwan, the parallels with Ukraine, whether the west will help Taiwan or not, and how difficult military action will be. This is only valuable to someone who would already be predisposed to considering China taking military action regardless of the domestic issues China faces. One would need to have assumed military build up is a precursor to war and is the principle tool to enact foreign policy. Taiwan relations won’t be this simple. If anything, China would do an economic blockade before any military action. And that in itself would already be a debilitating maneuver without landing on Taiwanese soil. How this report doesn’t consider this or any other developments similar to non military action to compel Taiwan displays a narrow view of the approach and decision making in the CCP. This only helps stoke up fears of military action when the biggest influence has been economic, and supports the rhetoric of China hawks more than anything. And, this provides no real solutions to this, since even if Taiwan gets more military hardware or general aid, the compelling economic influence would remain unresolved and still stand.

    "reunify," nooooo,Taiwan has never been governed by PRC. Big part of the fixation of Taiwan is a reminder of how China could had been without CCP rule. Its existence jeorpardizes the CCP claim that Chinese can only be governed by heavy handed authoritarian government.

    One Chinese hypersonic missile like DF-21d, DF-26 or YJ-21, is enough to sink an American aircraft carrier and America has no counter measures. American warships have to stay thousands of miles away from the contested waters.

    Hubris.....There is a lot more (detailed) information out there on just how ill-fated an attack like this would be. There are so many factors weighted in favour of Taiwan...so many, just look up the very small window the Chinois have simply due to "monsoon season"... The losses would be extraordinary and history has already shown how catastrophic amphibious assaults are.

    • @megafilmlover
      @megafilmlover Год назад +6

      Indeed🤔 It is very unlikely that China will invade Taiwan. The losses of such an attack would be far, far greater than the actual gains. At worst China might try a blockade of some kind but I doubt that could be maintained for too long either.

    It is important to note that authoritarianism versus democracy is a complex issue with varying opinions and perspectives. History has indeed shown us that wars can be costly in terms of both resources and human lives. Finding peaceful solutions and promoting cooperation and trade is a more effective way to preserve humankind. Regarding the specific case of China, it is essential to note that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has its own ideology and governing principles that may differ from those of other countries. It is up to the people of China to address their leaders to show the best path forward for their country. Leaders Like Putin and Xi can become "intoxicated" by power - engaging in wrong behavior simply because they know they can get away with it. Ultimately, the global community should strive to promote cooperation and collaboration among nations and improve all political systems that can help to foster greater understanding, trust, and mutual respect, which can lead to more stable and peaceful relationships between countries.

    • @octaneblue6
      @octaneblue6 9 месяцев назад

      Okay, Chinese communist propaganda machine. This isn't a question of peace. If an authoritarian nation intends to CONQUER any nation, including and especially a democratic regime, it is the world's duty not to allow that to occur.
