The Most Disappointing Fast Food Breakfast Item Yet

- Wendy's has recently released their new Homestyle French Toast Sticks! Described as offering a "perfect balance of a soft, custardy interior and crisp, golden-brown crust with notes of vanilla" this item sounds promising! Sadly in reality, it was a total disappointment.

Many many many years ago, (1983), I worked the breakfast shift at McDonald’s and we were always SLAMMED! The food was real. The eggs and meats were real. Even the butter was real! Everything was delicious. Breakfast was a huge part of the day! The food products today are so chocked full of preservatives which destroys any semblance of real food.
Me, too. Worked several years at a McDonald's in Palos Verdes (which, sadly, isn't there anymore), 1980 to 1984. Breakfast was real, like you said. High quality. I remember, too, the McRib was better because it braised in the sauce for hours and was tender and suffused in sauce.
agreed! back in the late 80's while still in highschool I worked (at McDonalds) weekends during school, and full-time in the summer. everything is true that you said, and even the biscuits were made fresh, daily. I still even remember the nice, old lady that would make them. she was so sweet.
Amen to that sister! Most foods are so heavily processed and filled with preservatives nowadays it's more chemicals than actual food. Go into a grocery store,pick a dozen items @ random and read the ingredients;
I'll bet you find one common thing in the majority of them:they all contain
high fructose corn syrup or corn syrup solids;why? Because it's cheaper to use them as filler for most food products,to cut their manufacturing costs and turn a profit.
Thank you for your service and wisdom 🤟

These were my exact thoughts when I first tried these “French Toast” sticks. You’re better off just eating toast, I’ve never felt so cheated out of my money before. Wendy’s should be absolutely ashamed of themselves for allowing this utter fail. This is worse than McDonald’s Arch Deluxe, and Carl’s Jr./Hardee’s Boss burger, at least those items had flavor.
"i guess if i'm looking for good things to say about these french toast sticks, well, they're edible" the sad thing is that, after the kfc beyond chicken nuggets, i feel like that's _a genuine compliment_

Boy, this whole year the food has been, abysmal to say the least... And it's scary cuz the trend shows that we're going to have absolutely bad quality food at a very high price and it's just going to keep getting worse. It not just the fast food, it's happening almost in every section of our lives: groceries, cleaning materials, etc the quality goes bad while the price goes up. It's just scary tbh..
I haven’t had most the items he’s reviewed recently, but I really liked the Wagyu burger from Arby’s. It’s kinda pricey but the patty actually had flavor which was surprising from a fast food burger.
Food is the new gas right now, now we overcame the gas prices pretty much (still kinda high but way better than 5.50) but food is insane.
Agreed.
@Daniel Therman the inflation in the 80s lasted just under 3 years i believe, then it corrected to the normal 2% ish, no guarantee itll be the exact same but even the worst times in US history there was a recovery, then a period of thriving.
Absolute truth! Been feeling this since last year! And it's just getting worse...
For me, I usually eat something clean and/or simple for breakfast. Almost always fruit, oatmeal, maybe toast, or once on a rare occasion eggs. The issue I have with fast food breakfast is that it shares the greasiness and heaviness that I'd only be comfortable consuming during brunch at the earliest. I feel as though most people prefer a light breakfast, since heavy or greasy foods tend to make you feel lethargic, which is not what you want at the beginning of the day.
Eggs, bacon, black pudding, sausage, grilled tomato, mushrooms, slice of bread and cup of rosey. Can't be beat:-)
I usually just have eggs and toast with banana and peanutbutter on bulk.
For me I feel it's not their job. If I go to a burger joint I want a burger not a goddamn waffle taco
I think the reason people don't talk about fast food breakfast food menus is because in general, no one really likes them all that much. They sell well enough because there are always going to be people who are late for work and need a quick meal on the drive to work. But compared to something like a burger which has such a long history in fast food, they've had so many years to perfect the formula. I don't think anyone's managed to crack the code on making "tasty enough for what it is" fast food breakfast items the way they have for lunch or dinner foods.
McDonald's has the best breakfast
Whataburger has amazing breakfast
You know, I always wonder how a majority of RUclips food reviewers end up getting quality products when they go to review new items, but when I get them they do a horrible job preparing them. It's refreshing and disappointing to see ReviewBrah get the same lack of consistency and quality as me, in real world scenarios.
That and there are a lot of food reviewers who get an item that looks like garbage and they think it's the best thing on earth just because it's edible (I'm looking at you Joeysworldtour)
So true.
Great assessment

😂 What we're all here for
The breakfast menu only matters if the business model embraces breakfast as a major profit-generating venture.
When I worked for Hardee's, >80% of the daily revenue was generated from breakfast...mainly handmade biscuits and coffee. They literally would have made more daily profit by extending breakfast hours by two hours and then closing the store for the rest of the day!
When I was a general manager for Taco Bell, I lamented over how corporate refused to open early for breakfast to sell breakfast burritos. In reality, ~90% of our daily profit was made between 7:30PM and 11PM when all the potheads came in, eyes all red like they'd been fighting a forrest fire (what we called "blazed"), and starving like teenage boys with a hunger of four grown men. They'd literally plop down hundred dollar bills and say "give me this much in food."
Now days, I don't eat more than two meals per day...if even that much. Usually, supper is my only meal of the day. When I do have breakfast, I typically go to a sit-down restaurant. Only when I am traveling, or when I am expending a great amount of energy outdoors, and time is severely limited, will I even consider fast food. In those rare circumstances, it is almost always a breakfast burrito meal from Whataburger.
I've learned that the business model matters more than the hype. Restaurants need the hype to appear relevant in the minds of a fickle consumer market. However, beyond this little, but highly essential "song and dance," the business needs to bolster the "cash cow" elements of its sales. Hardee's, as horrible as it is, will always make its money from coffee and biscuits. Taco Bell will always be a late nigh haven for indiscriminate potheads with the munchies. The corporate executives know this, and that is why all of the "limited time only" menu items are generally crap.
It’s terrible to pay that much for stale piece of bread how pathetic
As a lover of French toast sticks, those look immeasurably disappointing.
Every single pre-frozen french stick brand you can get at a grocery store looks better than these.

the pricing for some average french toast sticks that you could buy a whole 24 pack of at grocery stores for $4 is outrageous and will be the sole purpose id assume of this items downfall
I guarantee the boxed ones taste a lot better than the Wendy's ones that looked like they've spent 3 hours in a tanning bed lol
@@cameronpeterson6734 you can get like 200+ at Costco for like 16-18$ that are amazing. or you know, crack a egg on some bread and fry it, not too complicated.
@@cameronpeterson6734 only 3 hours?
Well Wendy’s is a business not a charity. They need to make a profit & they are a brand you’re paying for. So you pay for the branding of it or stick with your grocery bought stuff and make it yourself.
There are two reasons fast food companies focus on lunch and dinner vs breakfast. 1.) advertising for a burger, taco, chicken sandwich has a 66% chance of selling vs the breakfast 33%. Meaning one item can be served 2 times a day vs once. 2.) (this continues off of number 1), for most people breakfast time is pre work, pre 9-5… so during the week there is maybe an hour or two rush vs the lunch and dinner rush, which dinner for people can be anytime from 4 (early birds) till 10 (when people get off work, especially retail). Now here is the heart of fast food: people get off work and they do not want to cook, what’s available quickly, fast food. You may wake up and want to treat yourself to Wendy’s, Taco Bell, or something else, but a person is more likely to feel tired and lazy after work and just pick something up. You don’t have that same feeling on the way to work. It’s rarer.
Never thought of syrup as "sauce"......thanks reviewbrah! Will now go to IHOP and order the pancake "sauce"...
I think the major reason for neglect in breakfast menus across fast food chains is that most people just don’t eat breakfast out of routine habits born from whatever reasons align with them.
I think lots of people eat breakfast, I think the quality went down and now no one trusts fast breakfast.
@@eerielconstantine5051 yeah, breakfast is usually lower quality than the lunch time food. If a bunch of kids are going to be messy and not care, then of course those problems will be compounded at 6 am lol.

Breakfast at fast food generally ends at around 10 or 10:30, so it’s greatly limiting it’s availability to anyone who works second shift/overnight or even people running errands, which most likely start at the very end of that range (at the earliest, given when retail/grocery stores are open). That also means it’s available for only 4 or 5 hours, whereas their lunch/dinner items are available for at least twice that if not a lot more. So the relative buzz seems proportional to me, in addition to lots of other factors mentioned in the video and comments.
You have to also think that drunk and/or stoned people go at night. More money is to be made off non-breakfast because of the drunks and stoners.
For me fast food breakfast is limited to chick-fil-a and Bojangles (southeast US chain of restaurants) anything else else is honestly not worth it

For your question as to why people don't really eat breakfast at fast food places; I'm from a small European town and we only have McDonald's. Their breakfast stops at 11 and I don't know anybody that would wake up for it. I guess their target demographic is just business people who need a quick bite after pulling a night shift or early birds on the way to work so that's why they're not pulling as many customers.
Love your videos and love that you have subtitles on because they help alot :)
The majority of fast food breakfast items are almost universally inconsistent in the quality of their offers. New items are only decent on the first few days of the rollout, and falls off of a cliff in a few weeks.
The Burger King Croissant is a prime example of this. The croissant was originally light, buttery, and quite flakey, but in a month, they were consistently heavy or on the edge of staleness. Or the McGriddle, sometimes it's swimming in syrup and the bacon or sausage is undercooked every other visit.
You're better off going to a local diner. Better food quality and you're helping your community.
Man I used to love bk crossiants or the McGriddle
You're helping your community equally by going to a fast food place too. Franchises are still local businesses.
@@ReverendMeat51 I get your point, but most franchises are a single owner with multiple restaurants. For example, I live in Charlotte NC and Wild Wings Cafe is a franchise here. The one near my home is owned by Musein Mohammed, a former NFL wide receiver, and he owns 6 on them in NC. I have a difficult time considering him to be a small business owner, though technically he is.
@@TEEANVEE Thanks for the comment! Man, I was in absolute love with the McGriddle when it launched! I would buy the bacon/cheese version almost everyday. Then one day, I bought 2 and the wrap paper was soaked with that syrup and the bacon was limp and obviously undercooked. As a customer, you ignore it as a one off, but after about a month of serving them, the McDonald's just gave up on consistent quality and shat them out! To this day, they are a gooey, half cooked mess.
@@youtubemusicowesmemoney8470 I stopped eating breakfast meats because I heard they cause cancer but I feel your reasons for quitting McDonald’s breakfast too
Even at home I find French Toast is just one of those foods you have to eat as soon as possible after it comes out of the pan, ideally immediately, I think this is why it never seems to do well as take out food.
Reviewbrah, you hit the nail on the head with this video. Most of the Wendy’s breakfast menu slaps but their French toast sticks are complete turds.
At least then there would be some flavor.😁
To me, the only redeemable breakfast item at Wendy’s is definitely their potato wedges, they are always, (no matter what Wendy’s establishment I go to), crispy and perfectly cooked. Good enough to eat without any condiments. I just recently got the breadsticks and they smelled so awful, I’m pregnant, and I guess they just smelled like wet dog to me, but I think that’s the smell of the cooked egg coating on the sticks. I took a bite and I just wanted to puke!!! Absolutely awful. Not even a hint of sweetness. I’m not sure what I was expecting, I was half expecting a cinnamon toast stick flavor. They also had forgotten my syrup….so there’s that. But yeah, most fast food breakfast is always the same thing over and over.
For myself, French toast must be eggy/custardy, made with nutmeg, buttered and lots of syrup. Yum! 😋 Those look thin, dry and flavorless. Great review Brah!

Mine were also burnt and tasted exactly as you described. Bland bread. Was so disappointed cause their other breakfast items slap!
I personally really hate fast food breakfast, the eggs are always terrible, the bacon is never as good as home made, I dislike processed sausage. Perhaps I'm spoiled by freshly prepared eggs and bacon but I just can't enjoy breakfast items.
If I wanted “Home Style” anything, I’d stay home!
Good morning father.

Hello there!
@@TheReportOfTheWeek General Kenobi
Good morning unfortunately
When I lived in Clarksville Tennessee ( ft Campbell air assault ) Arby's had breakfast. They had the best breakfast burrito in the world.
The last time I went to Wendy’s and swear the burger I got was in the hot window from a rush that didn’t sell and they sold it instead of making fresh. The bun was dry and hard. I wouldn’t be surprised if that order was sitting the hot window for an hour+.
Spot on review. Had it this morning. Tasted like white bread that was overcooked and then dunked in fake maple syrup.
For my experience fast food restaurants are so inconsistent and varied throughout locations that any review isn't really a review on the item in total it's a review on how well that particular store prepared that particular item at that particular time
Completely agree
the reason people dont care about breakfeast is because not everyone eats breakfeast but everyone eats at least lunch or dinner
Regarding your breakfast to lunch/dinner popularity comment: I mostly avoided breakfast lines for years when I worked indoors and had to be on time and consistent, it wasn't until I worked in my own company truck where I had more time to try different things. I see a lot of other company trucks in line, so maybe they represent a good chunk of that breakfast sales and there aren't as many of them compared to average consumers. But any time I try to eat around lunch or after work it always 10x more busy at the places its crazy.
Also those french toast sticks look gross and I usually like Wendy's breakfast above the others (Hot honey/ honey butter chicken). You are braver than I am.
The ones where hes disappointed are always best. Wouldn't expect anything less from wendys
As much as it's a bummer that see our hero having to experience something less than spectacular, the disappointing products do yield quite entertaining reactions.
Wendy's is one of the better fast food places you philistine
do you mean you wouldnt expect anything MORE? i may be trippin, but i dont think it makes much sense to say “I wouldnt expect anything less”. wouldnt that mean that you think wendys is usually good? unless that’s actually what you meant.
Do you mean you wouldn't expect anything more?
Wendy's is barely a step above McDonald's. I view people that enjoy either as the same kind of people who put pineapple on pizza. Weird people who don't like normal society.
Deep-fried plain bread sticks with no vanilla, no powdered sugar, no nothing, and burnt to a crisp as the cherry on top. Cue up Gordon Ramsay:
"are we really charging people money for this?!!!!".
except gordon ramsey would have a few extra words added in.
@@poil8351 and he would probably burn the french toast himself and then go "mmm delicious"
the silence that followed the first bite was deadly
Eating breakfast in the house is a million times easier and quicker than going to a restaurant just for the early morning
yep, this is the reason why breakfast menus in fast food places aren't that popular

I want to see the manager! Karen
as a chick-fil-a employee, i’m confident in saying that our breakfast is a big part of our business. of course, i’m biased because i work the morning shift, but our breakfast is fairly popular.
chick-fil-a is my go to. I feel like they're on the same level as mc donalds which is a pretty high bar IMO.
I'm not a big chick fila fan but yours guys breakfast is more than fairly popular lol
@@dwhutto
What is your low bar if McDonald's is your high bar? LOL!
It's good to hear that the staff of a restuarant are genuinely proud of their food products. You know you're getting good quality breakfast.
Those chicken burritos are fire.
Laughed harder than i have in years at you eating those nasty french sticks 😂 cried real tears
I believe the lack of "interest/talk" about fast food breakfast items, is mainly due to the fact that the majority of people may only get them if they miss breakfast at home, or if they don't have enough time in the morning to make their own breakfast. So once they plow through the line and grab something and down it in the car on the way to work, they hardly give it a second thought. Add to that, that the location they choose, usually hinges on whatever resturaunt is closest to their work commute, whereas lunch/dinner gets a lot more thought and planning going into the decision. But that is just one possible reason.
Thanks for the review! This looks like something that would be great on a $.99 menu… That’s about it
The reason people overlook breakfast fast food is that people can’t depend on how long the wait time is for the food. You may be running 15 min early and end up 20 minutes late to work. The time you may be stuck in line for varies from day to day so why risk being late.
At that point just take 5 min to fry a few eggs and toast some bread or make a breakfast wrap the night before
Problem with French toast is all I want in it is Taste of egg and either deep fried or pan fired egg. It's not hard. Two things you need to make it. Yet if they forget the egg then it's just cooked bread. that could cost less then a dollar for a pack... Honestly if I was their food design team I'd try to figure out pan frying a hollowed out bun, top and bottom with an single egg split for both. Then When cooked, either freeze or fridge it then deep fry it before order. Then sell that.
How ever that takes more creativity then LTOs from tacobell... Which it really isn't...
I used to live in a big old drafty house which was haunted by the ghost of a strange boy who passed in the 1920s. Sometimes I would wonder what that boy might have thought about modern fast food breakfast menu items, but, thanks to your channel, no more!!
Hearing Reviewbrah describing French Toast Stix as being "egregiously bad" is the content I log in for.
* egregious! *Sticks.
I know you won't appreciate the correction of your awful spelling but I'm here to help and I love you. X
@@benlachenal771 You smell But I did correct "egregiously". I'm leaving Stix for my own personal flair.
wow, your life must suck
It amazes me to this day how relaxing and interesting I find watching this guy talking about fast food.
I agree. Somehow he totally pulls this off.
These look almost identical to the French toast sticks that Sonic Drive-In has had for a minimum of a decade (I worked there starting in 2012 and it was an existing item).
To your question:
I think a lot of FF franchises sort of ignore the breakfast menu because a lot of times these places do not serve breakfast past 1030am or 11am. There are few hours it is available and so supply will also be limited. I think depending on the time lunch starts reflects how the breakfast menu is treated. People staying at home more often and for longer hours means meals will be made at home and these places are competing with people's comfort. They have to entice people to get dressed to go spend money on their FF and resturaunts. There may not be the profit comparison to the dinner menu. It may just barely make overhead. Idk, been working on this theory for a while now. Thats why donut houses and coffee shops are able to stay alive serving breakfast items all day. Usually people who go shopping for coffee or breakfast are going into an establishment they know serves breakfast. They serve breakfast all day and so you know the menu you get walking in, so people automatically know they get a breakfast item. And these FF franchises are competing with Breakfast All Day shops, too.
A good morning Reviewbrah! Great way to start my day, even if you didn't enjoy the item!!
Good morning!
@@TheReportOfTheWeek Hope your day is going well!
Having worked a number of years at wendy's, I'm not sure how they do these, but they look very much like they've been kept in a heat drawer too long.
"we're in uncharted territory.... Not really" got me 😂
I also think it's absolutely hilarious that Wendy's is selling bland half slices of toast with syrup, like, we could whip this together in our own kitchens in like 10mins, and it would sure as hell be a better breakfast item than this abomination
And lastly, to answer the "why do people brush off fast food breakfast" question, in my family for example, breakfast is 'the most important meal of the day' so we'll usually eat some actual food, maybe some raw veggies added on the side. We try to eat something healthy for breakfast so we have enough energy for the day. :)
I thought his disappointment was most immeasurable with Popeye's Butterfly shrimp... 😅
