The republicans realize that greater voting power and democracy in general is a threat to their power. They've become entirely owned by the corporate powers that fund them. In fact, this was the moment that Bill Clinton won the 1992 election right there. In fact, George HW Bush's face at 1:24 knew he was going to lose in 1992.
1:24 That moment you realize this guy is going to beat you.
Clinton knew his audience. He didn't need a teleprompter to tell him what to say (even when he did use them). Most Presidents are stuck without a written speech, but he was always prepared on what to say, how to say it, and to whom he was speaking.
Wait, you can have a debate without interrupting each other, no way!!
Bush's face tells it all
Almost 30 years later, we still haven't brought American wages or education up. Wages are flat while college tuitions have gone way up.
Tuition is up because all government student loans are guaranteed by the government so colleges have free will to charge whatever they want knowing full well they'll be reimbursed. They've gamed the system.
So this is what a real presidential debate sounds like...
@None None Sit ubu sit, good dog.
Bush’s face at 1:25: “man, I gotta take a dump.”
Clinton had an amazing ability to seem sincere, like he's talking to you and you alone and really listening to you--personally. He wasn't really a great president, but he sure was a great leader.
Wow, within the first 10 seconds, this video shows how great of a politician Clinton was. The ability to form a meaningful connection with a voter instantly is huge in politics.
Oh my god this brought me to tears. It's so compassionate and human.
Just wish he treated women better ...
If you like it here in America, maybe you should start respecting our justice system better? You have had 30 years on you now, to provide us with the evidence or those claims, and you have NOTHING to show for it, that the claims are made up.
His magic is that he can get you to feel that way without answering the question
For a serial philanderer and accused rapist, ya, real compassionate and human.
By today's standards candidates of that time had an incredible command of statistics and an ability to communicate. Plus...no interruptions from GHW.
Couldn’t of said it better myself
Amazing that those two became such good friends.
Bush probably wanted Bill to take him to Epstein Island.

Bill Clinton is like any predator. A smooth talker and very persuasive and very calculating

Oh and continue defending someone as anti-Latino as 45 with a last name like yours.

It's racist to assume someone should vote for a particular party depending on their race/nationality/gender.
I miss Bill
we all do, out of the last 3 presidents bill was the best by far
He had it at "Tell me how it's affected you again?" - plain sailing from there. He had their attention.
Its amazing how he speaks to you like your a functional adult.
One guy can’t even figure out what the question means because he’s so out of touch with the reality that Americans face, while the other engages the people and can empathize and sympathize with the plight of the American people... why are people Republicans again? Constantly voting for someone that doesn’t care about them or their businesses.
what a great president. embodies and manifests what the rest of the world expects from the most wealthy nation. articulate, intelligent, fair, and a visionary. god bless the america that elects another leader like this.
It's 2020 and this is still the truth, we're just further down the rabbithole towards properly being a 3rd world country.
Yup, n you can't put it on the guy whose been in office for 47 months.
@@realUlfricStormcloak I mean Trump and the Republicans broadly are directly responsible for the corporate looting of the American people, so yea you can definitely assign blame pretty directly. For instance, really the only achievement of the Trump presidency was the trillion dollar tax cut for billionaires that was paid for by literally taking that money from the American people.
If that’s true - and I agree that it is - what does it say about Clinton’s 8 years in office? Didn’t he have nearly a decade to turn this around? Hell: what does it say about ANY American politician, who always run on the platform of “things suck: I’m gonna fix them.” After a while, you realize the record is skipping because there’s a *crack* in it.
@@spb7883 Well a president's role in policy and actual lawmaking is extremely small. Congress writes laws. But I take your point. The real issue is the actual structure of government. Mitch McConnell may be a soulless monster, but he's also intelligent and responding to the incentives created by the system within which he's acting. The republicans realize that greater voting power and democracy in general is a threat to their power. They've become entirely owned by the corporate powers that fund them. So they work to funnel money to the billionaires that own them, and enact dangerous policies to benefit them. And they work to decrease the effectiveness of democracy. Through defunding education, gerrymandering, stacking courts to favor anti-democratic suits, etc.
@@con1q2w Yes, fair point! But this supports my view even further, because to your point, the president has a small role. Yet, every for years they promise big things they can’t possibly deliver *because* they don’t play a role in legislation.
Bill can you please do one more term ?
It was that moment, plus "unlike my opponent I want to build a bridge to our future" comeback, that won Clinton the presidency.
The funny thing about this debate is that it has been 20+ years and usa still talks about the same problems. Healthcare and tax
Looking at Bush's reaction it seems like he was downright impressed with Clinton's performance.
He looks charmed.
It’s sad that I’ll probably never see a debate this articulate and well moderated again in my lifetime. After what happened last week, I think it just proves debates will never have any impact on an American election again. Our Democracy is over.
Love the man, his empathy, his skills, his ability to put the real issue in perspective. Love the man :)

This is the most like Sorkin dialogue I’ve ever heard a US presidential debate sound.
And just like that, the 1992 election was over.
And he supported NAFTA whole-heartedly, cut welfare benefits and got rich in the process.
I think we can all agree hes a liar, but this is how you win a debate, not screeching over a microphone.
Bill Clinton's PolitiFact results compare reasonably well to those of the 2016 presidential candidates.
- His 47 percent True and Mostly True isn't far from the most truthful 2016 candidates: Hillary Clinton, Sanders and Kasich, each with 51 percent.
- His 21 percent False, Mostly False, and Pants on Fire is better than any 2016 candidate. In 2016, Hillary Clinton did best at 28 percent, followed by Sanders at 29 percent.

PolitiFact ratings of 2016 candidates:
- Highest percentage of claims rated True or Mostly True: Three-way tie -- Clinton, Sanders and Kasich, at 51 percent.

- Lowest percentage of claims rated Mostly False, False or Pants on Fire: Clinton, 28 percent. Sanders was second lowest at 29 percent.

That man certainly knew his way around bush
Gone are the days when Republicans and Democrats could just laugh off their disagreements
If Hilary had Bill's speech skills, she would comfortably beat Donald at 2016...
Who would have thought they would end up brothers. This is when you bring the vest you have to the table and work together for the best of the nation.
Bush Sr. and Clinton were terrible presidents.
DUDE CONGRATS ON WINNING THE GAME AWARDS RABBI!!!!
This video is as old to us as the debate was to this video
The first televised presidential debate was for the 1960 election, but there were radio debates before that
(Edit: forgot to specify televised)
The lady who asked this question asked, "How has the national debt affected you personally?" when she was actually referring to the recession. Bush got lost in the terminology, but Clinton figured it out right away.
Bills like, hurry up lets get this over with, Ive got a flight scheduled on the Lolita express to pedo island this afternoon!
Clinton was a master politician, definitely up there with Reagan and Obama in terms of charisma
