People don't realize how difficult it is to do what Phil Hartman was doing. Constantly shoving food in his mouth, eating while at the same time reading his lines & staying in character while not gagging on the food as he was barely drinking any water (or whatever) to help wash it down.
There will never be another one like Phil Hartman.
Seeing him scarf down all that food while doing his lines was like some 1930's three stooges, Laurel and Hardy type comedy.
And that food must have been cold too, so probably not at all pleasant to eat.
Oh, it couldn't have been all that difficult. Bill did it without any problems. So Phil was just getting into Bill's character.

Agree, a cast of all stars. Chris Farley and Phil Hartman were my favorites. I don’t remember Chris Rock being in this skit though.
Notice that, not once did anyone look at a cue card. People don't seem to remember that there were whole seasons when this was the case. It puts the show on a whole different level, and it's a big part of why the sketch holds up so well.
And the camera work and staging, gosh they must have had a bigger budget than most other seasons of the show. This sketch was seriously rehearsed.

I like to think that his manager character is just sick and tired of Bill Clinton showing up every single day just stealing other peoples orders, but he has to put on a professional face and just deal with it lol

It is absolutely BONKERS how professional everyone was in this sketch. I feel like the modern SNL cast would have broken character and fell down laughing at least 3-4 times, especially when Hartman can't talk from his mouth being so full of food in the 'warlords' segment. Pure brilliance.

All-time classic sketch. I like how Phil Hartman was about to break but he hid it by pretending to be choking. Rob Schneider calmly hands him a Coke without even grinning. Professionals.

It's like Simpsons predicting the Trump presidency in a flash forward episode from the year 2000. Trump had announced a presidential run in 1999 so his ambitions were well known.
Likewise Bill Clinton this episode of SNL is from December 1992, and was already accused of a 12-year extramarital relationship by Gennifer Flowers during the presidential campaign that same year. Far before the Lewinsky scandal and impeachment 6 years later.
Hartman had such a incredible voice. Bill Clinton actually DID THAT. He'd jog off & after the camera lost him , he'd duck in a McDonalds!

I remember seeing this sketch live back in the 90s. It was hilarious!!! Phil Hartman was a freaking national treasure!!!! Such a great comedian and human being!
I can't believe I missed it. I saw the previous new episode that aired with Sinbad and Superman's funeral.
He managed to capture the charm even Clinton's opponents admitted he had. Plus, the policy wonk side too. Remarkable

I remember how refreshing it was to hear him. People could ask him about the most random geographical event and he knew all about it and could explain his position on it. He was absolutely a huge policy wonk.

SNL always needed a utility man like Dan Aykroyd . A guy they could plug into any sketch and he would pull it off without a hitch. Phil Hartman was that guy as well. And the best SNL ever had ! I was heart broken when I heard of his death. No one has ever been able to take his place. He was the most professional journeyman character actor television has ever seen ! He will never be replaced.
Same could be said about Farley. Both men were irreplaceable.
Hartman was the glue that held the cast together the entire time he was on the show. Nobody will ever be able to replace him.

iheartjimothy I never knew this! No wonder why it was so genuine and funny! Hartman was so funny on SNL, Newsradio, PeeWee’s Playhouse and his movies. I still can’t believe his wife relapsed on drugs and killed him. He was truly one of a kind.
