Thank you. I noticed my fridge wasn't cooling as it normally does a week ago. Today I noticed the ice. Searched on RUclips how to fix the ice issue and I learned from your video. I did it. Thank you again.
There's really nothing to it. As long as you can relocate your food for a little while and don't mind sitting uncomfortably for about 15 minutes, you're good to go! 👍😜👍
Where I used to live, a casita, I would put a hot plate in the freezer on low and it would melt in 10 min. It would come out in big chunks. FYI it was out of the way of any water. You are correct. The unit cools the fins from right to left. I don't know if it will help or not. I was having cooling problems in the fridge, so I bought 12v cooling fans that connect to the cooling fins. I wired it into the light, before the door switch.
My plan is to put a shallow tray under the fins(ours is a dometic 8 cu ft ) and pour warm water over the coils to melt the frost. Ours doesn't get to bad as we don't go on long trips.(9 days max but after about 5 days the temp starts creppinghing up over time. I don't want to take all the food out, just whats on the top shelf and hopefully be done in 10 minutes or less. Thanks for posting.
Love watching your videos... My 2 year old thinks Ben is his friend... So i just wanted you to know if you guys come to Baltimore ever please let me know so Zachariah can meet Ben???
Thank-you so very much...I'm a new RV'er, living in the RV full time right now since Dec 8th it's Feb 16th, and about 5 fins are beginning to Ice up, so I want to do them quickly. And then the Freezer I hope I can find your video on the Freezer. Please link it to me...I just can't thank you enough, I was so bewildered as how to do this. Big hugs!!!!!!!!
Hi is it your thermistor settings is in the middle?our fridge is not cooling like it was before 34-36 temp.setting is 3. now mostly it is on 40's even i put it on temp.setting to highest number 5, no ice buildup. I just noticed your thermistor is in the middle, our is on the furthest back,im wondering if we accidentally move it thats why it is starting to not cool like it was before.Thank you!
Can you tell me what kind of thermometer with the probes you use? I would like to get some, but usually don’t have wifi. Do they require Wifi? Thank you! Lisa
The temperature sensors in this video are from a 3-probe weather station. We kept one in the freezer, one in the fridge, put one outside, and the base read temperature at it's location too so we knew all sorts of info. It doesn't use wifi. amzn.to/3gWnt6w
I didn't think of that, I can turn everything off and even if there's stuff in my freezer i can still keep it closed and the food inside should be ok while I clean the fridge, right?
Hi new to your channel. First time watching your video. Thank you for the advice. Question how’s the thermostat the one you put inside your fridge holding up.
Noticed mine today...need to check if the drain is obstructed or restricted...weather/temperature swings really mess with RV plumbing systems...mold mildew can clogg drain tubes
Why did you not discuss what the ideal inside temp should be?? I have a Norcold auto defrost and it went into defrost but my inside temp is between 44-47° and that's not cold enough!
From my research i havent found a setting. People get fans and hook them up on the fins which stops it. Im just gonna go ahead and do this trick of hairdrying and get a good deep clean of fridge too.
I would just leave the sensor where the manufacturer places it. Some models move the sensor as a way of adjusting the temperature in the fridge though, which is kind of clever.
Nice video, but I think many of the Norcold refers have a defrost cycle that automatically cycles every 48 hours or so. I know that is for the refer section of ours, but the freezer is on its own to get defrosted.
That's handy! Are the Norcolds propane/electric or just electric? A lot of the motorhomes we've been looking at have residential fridges so we won't have to go through this process any more.
@@MagicNomadic Agreed! I have the same RV Dometic RM1350 and live in south Louisiana and mine doesn't do that, the defrost cycle is every 48 hours that should prevent this from happening. Thanks
There's really no way to prevent this from happening because of the way the cooling fins are exposed to ambient humidity rather than hidden like in a residential fridge. It all depends on how humid it is where you're camping too - we didn't get any frost like this in the SW but it happened really quickly back east where it's humid all year long.
There should be a little plastic "drip pan" under the fins that routes the water out through a drain tube on the outside of your RV. Without that, I imagine it would be a lot of towels!
It does operate in that temperature range, but to get the air temperature there those fins have to be colder than that. Ice buildup in RV fridges is super common and basically unavoidable except in very dry areas.
@@Five2Go It should be very avoidable. Compressor type refrigerators and AC systems do not ice up as long as there is adequate airflow through the evaporator coil. I put two thermometers in my RV fridge last night. The one on the top shelf by the evap fins reads 27F while the one on the bottom shelf shows 37F. Warmer air should rise, but it does not appear to be doing so quickly enough to avoid this large differential. My fridge is empty, so I can only imagine it gets much worse when there are a lot of items in it further restricting the airflow around the fins. I think a fan or fans inside the fridge to keep air moving around the fins would likely prevent the large temp difference and most likely solve the icing issue.
The ice is actually a result of the ammonia evaporating off of the fins creating an extremely cooling effect causing the ice over time it builds up because it's an absorption refrigerator
Great video! Thanks so much. I think I’d rather watch ice melt than water boil but that’s just me.
Thank you.

Thank you for this video! This will be my first time defrosting the fins. I think I can do it now.
It’s no big deal. Do it!
Love that the fridge blends with the rest of the place!
Learned the hair dryer trick a while ago and its the greatest thing since sliced bread. :)
Good video. Keep’m coming!
HEY, our camper makes a cameo or two in the background here. Woo Hoo!!
Great video! Just did mine and that hair dryer turned days of melting to 30min. Awesome trick!
Love your videos! I was always afraid to do this and this makes me more confident to try now!
There's really nothing to it. As long as you can relocate your food for a little while and don't mind sitting uncomfortably for about 15 minutes, you're good to go! 👍😜👍
Just had to do mine & it was so satisfying to do this 😂
Thanks so very much for being so thorough
Do You have to turn frig off before you do this process?
Wow~ excellent tutorial, thank you! Appreciate the details about watching out for wires/tubes/plastic not getting too hot~ most helpful 🎯👍
I thought this WAS kind of fun to watch in a time lapse. HA. Thanks for sharing! - Melissa
Very helpful! Thank you!
This worked great! Thanks for the "How to " vid!
Cute little ginger kiddos !!🥰🥰🥰

Again, great detail about one of the little, yet important things to take care of in an RV. Keep on keepin on.
Thank you, I appreciate the video, I learned a lot
Excellent advice thank you
I use a cookie sheet for bottom shelving. Save on paper towels. There really expensive.
Thank you so much 😊

A while back I was told not to use a hair dryer for this purpose??

Nice vid! We have that type of fridge too 😀 we don't have a weather station yet should I look for one with three probes and what kind did you use?
We use this one: www.amazon.com/dp/B01EIBJO76/?ref=exp_five2go_lv_dp_vv_mw
Speeded up..still pia...insect pump sprayer tank with water and wet shop vac will KICK ass better...its too slow. nursing that...
My days...failed defrost...iced up evaps..did some factory warranty jobs Maytag Whirpool LG etc...9 years shipyards San Diego too..
I don't bragg..
health application systems..blue shield California Champus program...etc
Yak yak

Is there a correct temp to keep freezing from happening?

You need a new thermistor, that's not normal.
@@MagicNomadic Agreed! I have the same RV Dometic RM1350 and live in south Louisiana and mine doesn't do that, the defrost cycle is every 48 hours that should prevent this from happening. Thanks
Doesn't seem to be a follow-up on defrosting the freezer.
How do you prevent this from happening in the first place?

It all depends on how humid it is where you're camping too - we didn't get any frost like this in the SW but it happened really quickly back east where it's humid all year long.
I did this today. It was a mess. Where does the melting water goes?

If you have ice in your refrigerator, doesn't that mean it's too cold? It should be between 35 - 40F. Ice should not be forming at all.

Turn it off, leave the door open, walk away. By morning it will be completely defrosted and dry. No need to use a hairdryer or fingers.
That's how I do mine.
if you defrost before it is so iced up it won't take as long.
The ice is actually a result of the ammonia evaporating off of the fins creating an extremely cooling effect causing the ice over time it builds up because it's an absorption refrigerator
I wish he would have told us how long it took him to defrost it.
