The 10 Best Places In North Carolina You Should Move To

- Wow! These cities are totally awesome for you to consider as your new home!
North Carolina. Mountain views, an awesome coast, lots of good jobs and great schools, and a low cost of living. It has the great smokies on one side and the outer banks on the other side. You can see why people from all over are moving to the Tar Heel State. With a population of over 10 million, North Carolina is the ninth largest state in the U.S. and it continues to grow. Some say it’s the best state in the country. I would agree.
And, the people here are some of the friendliest around - it must be that southern charm. Overall, North Carolina is a great state to call home. But, as always, some cities are better than others - and today we’re talking about the ten BEST places to live in the Tar Heel State.
To measure the best cities to live in North Carolina, we have to use two things - data and opinion. We’ve looked at a bunch of data, you know - crime, poverty, the quality of schools and home prices. Plus, we took into account YOUR opinion - that’s right - you North Carolinians have a lot to say about which places in your city are great and which are not so great.
Let’s get started.

I guess we need a list of the 10 best places in North Carolina outside of the triangle 🤣
That feeling when it's all to direct attention away from the actual best places in NC. 😏
@@TheThriftShopSampler what are the actual best places in North Carolina, do you know?
Exactly
@@sashaa6175 Yes, but we won’t tell. Too many strangers will ruin them.
Been here in the Triangle for 30 years...
It is already being ruined. Cement and concrete replacing the countryside. Come on people, how many restaurants and grocery stores do you need?
The traffic congestion is crazy. I see alot more Yankee "attitudes" around here now. They leave their calling card of trash by the roads now. You never saw the trash along the roads that you see now! Give it a few more years there will be no green areas left around here. No more deer, no more owls or hawks...nature will be gone from the triangle...Sad!
I recently moved from Delaware to Clayton, NC. First thing I noticed was that the people here are so friendly!! I can go into a grocery store and strike up a conversation with a total stranger! And everyone smiles and has manners, unlike the northern states I lived in where you feel like no one acknowledges your existence.
I’m so happy to live NC, and will be the place I will take my last breaths!
The massholes up north.🤣 southern hospitality 😅
Please don't bring your politics with you. Remember what ruined your state!
@@EoCx1 To late for that ,time will make NC liberal bigly time.
Glad you’re enjoying! Carolina native 💙
My experience was the exact opposite: the people were pious and disingenuous. I left NC after a year, and I will never go back.
2922 update on Raleigh: lived here for 37 years. Finally retired and cannot get out fast enough. Huge amount of traffic congestion. Every forested area being developed as fast as the developers can build. Property taxes and utility rates have gone up considerably every year were have been here. Housing market now unaffordable. Houses are being grabbed up at absurd prices by people from New York and California who have the money.
I saw this happening years ago. Raleigh was not designed for such rapid growth. Not to mention, you used to be able to get more bang for your buck. Not now...
Yes, the area has changed greatly I"m sorry to say.
I left Florida for all of those reasons!! it was positively horrible. lived there for almost my entire life and was pushed out!
What about Pittsboro?
@@saranahmias1601 I have only been to Pittsboro about ten times for my work as a church organ repairman. Not much to the place. I saw it primarily at the intersection where 64 and 501 met. I understand lately there has been quite a bit of development. Probably will end up like Morrisville. Morrisville 30 years ago was a podunk rural suburb of Cary. Now it is sprawling new homes where all the software programmers live.
Gotta love how you put all the triangle spots in the list but when you need quality scenery for the B roll you use Wilmington. New Bern, Morehead City, Nags Head, and Asheville absolutely deserves a shout out. Sure the wages might be a little lower than the triangle or Charlotte but the history, natural scenery, culture, etc more than makes up for it when factoring for quality of life
100%
Amen
Nooooo stay away from Asheville lol way to many people here. But other then that Asheville is a great city to live in.
Greenville is nice as well. I feel like it's the most underrtaed city in the entire state.
@@DaGameGuy I live right outside Goldsboro and Kinston in the Lagrange area and we go to Greenville often. It is not bad at all. Lots of my family live there too.
I just moved back from North Carolina where I worked with the sweetest, kindest most beautiful people I ever had the honor of knowing. Ashe county looked like God hired Bob Ross to create it. Absolutely breathtaking. Now I'm back in the land of Massholes because my wife missed her family too much. I want to climb under a rock and die.
Ashe County is heaven on earth
My sympathies to you! My mom lives in Ashe
i used to live in ashe county now moved to morrisville nc
Hell9 neighbor. I'm from NC and my husband is from MA. So here I am. Since 1988.
we lived outside charlotte 10 yrs ago...moved back to jersey because I got home sick ;) now we're moving back to NC this time eastern NC. so there's a chance she will wanna move back to NC again :)
I live in NC (Charlotte Area) and I know the Research Triangle area is a very popular place right now, but I feel like you really missed the mark. There are plenty of places outside of the Triangle area other than the three you named that deserve to be of the Top 10 places to live in NC list. Plus I’ve found a lot of the people in the triangle area tend to be less hospitable than the rest of the state minus some in Charlotte.
It’s completely yankified
Yes-usually the metro areas of any state are less friendly, simply because people are so busy and so caught up in their work or other endeavors. They feel like they don't have time for small talk or casual greetings and casual conversation.
@@1Melody1963 That’s not what I’m talking about I’m just saying when you go to Cary or Apex it feels more like you’re in Connecticut than NC
@@1Melody1963 The southern culture isn’t there at all
@@holetohell4140 Maybe it’s, at least in part, who you visit with. I have friends that live in an older neighborhood off of Tryon Road. Both are lifelong NC folks. A visit to their house is very much a typical Southern visit. But I know what you mean-much of Cary isn’t that way. That’s why my husband and I decided to move to Hillsborough. Unfortunately the sprawl is wrecking things here as well.
My friends daughter moved from an upscale Northern NJ town to Cary , our friends loved it so much that they moved to Cary as well. We visited them last summer , and now my husband wants to move to Carey. It is a beautiful and friendly town .
Cary stands for Area for Relocated Yankees.

My sister moved to Apex back in 2014; she's so happy she did. Unfortunately, Illinois is a doomed state.
Illinois is sad. Taxes are destroying the state, especially in the southern two thirds
It's not doomed. It's done - stick a fork in it.

Lived in Morrisville for 20 years and moved to Cary almost 3 years ago. Love both places. With Morrisville and Cary sometimes it is tough to tell where one begins and the other ends they are so similar.
This video was both informative & hilarious!
Thanks for the informative videos, Nick! Have you been to Hickory? Would be interested to hear your thoughts
My town didn't make the list but kind of did...some would say it's practically #6... this was a great vid!
I left my home in the NC mountains after graduating high school. I joined the Marines, served for 30 years, and traveled the world. Even though I saw some beautiful places during my career, none compared (at least to me) to the Great Smoky Mountains. Several years ago my bride and I bought a place in our hometown and are updating the old house. It is not a fast-paced life, and even though the Marine Corps instilled a strong sense of urgency/a lack of patience in me, I am enjoying the slower pace of life and have learned how to relax. Escape the rat race and come join us!
Can you share the name of your hometown?
@@stanthomas142 Waynesville, NC
@@dancooper6447 Thank You. I know it moderately well. Wife and I have been looking to relocate from Northeast FL.
In my next life I wish to be born in the North Carolina mountains. I promise to never leave.
the only thing wrong with waynesville are the florida people who cant drive who insist on coming to the mountains. I live in Clyde.
Nick I like your quirky but informative video. It was fun to watch. Keep them coming. 🥰💯👌
This one is just phenomenal! From the musicians, back singer, and to Kem's interaction with the audience! Magical
NC is a wonderful place.
Damn right. I love this state.
Yeh I grew up in Midland and glad to be out of that liberal mess
Born and raised in North Carolina. I grew up in the Davison-Mooresville-Cornelius with family all around that area. After living 10 years in inner-city Charlotte, I wish I could go back. Now it is so expensive and much more crowded than it was 20 years ago. Needless to say, other old towns are cleaning up and growing into something. I'm happy to be purchasing my first home in Gastonia very soon.
Congratulations 🎉
I enjoy your vids, just got back from the Chrystal Coast, beautiful. Maybe a list of top 10 coastal towns.
Hey Nick, thanks for the video. What's your opinion of Zebulon and Garner?
I may be moving somewhere in the near future, so this was good to hear.
Excellent video-thank you. As an almost-lifelong resident of NC, this video is spot on. I love NC.
I love this state
I love NC!!
Well done Mr. Nick I’ve been waiting for this one
I know Lenny
This was so good. Thank you.
Pretty cool to see my town ( Holly Springs, NC ) made the list. I grew up in north Raleigh and after also living in Knightdale & Garner moved to Holly Springs 25 years ago ( 1998 ) . Yes, I have seen it transform. Love it here but like most places the additional traffic is always the price we pay in a growing area.
Yay Chapel Hill!!!!❤️❤️ We moved here 17 months ago from Utah. Love the people SO MUCH!!!! Beautiful state! If you’re interested in Chapel Hill but it’s too pricey look just south in Pittsboro. We have a chapel hill address but are in Chatham County. Property taxes are way less then in Orange County. More family friendly and still very safe. We also Loved Wake Forest (stayed there for a week when we visited). Wouldn’t mind moving there maybe when our kids get it middle school.
I grew up in Wake Forest and moved to Texas in high school. Missed it so much I'm moving back next week!
I'm Texas born and raised. Looking to get out of here as well!
❤️. It's a friendly place and still feel safe even a few miles from the coast. Neighbors and communities look after each other. The beach is great ! The mountains are beautiful!
Pinehurst is known for horses and equestrian sports, not just golf. In the early 1900’s an exclusive train line would bring the high society down from up north so they could enjoy polo, golf, horse racing and fox hunting. There was a black and white footage reel pinned to the end of this video showing that.
Western NC is the jewel of NC as far as I am concerned. Especially in the tri state area touching the North Georgia and Tennessee lines all the mountains go straight up to the Blue ridge parkway and smoky mountains. Less cities mostly woods and mountains and lakes.
I live in Bryson City
Wish we could move there but we have little ones and want more around for them
Thank you for video.Very beautiful! I wish you prosperity.
I used to live in Raleigh for 3 months back in 2009. I liked it a lot. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I had to move away. I wish I still lived there.
We're retired and just bought a home outside of Selma/Smithfield, which is 30 miles outside of Raleigh. It's rural, people are friendly and the housing market is hot at the moment. Time will tell if we remain happy but coming from Minnesota, a cold, unfriendly state that seems determined to drive away good, sane, sober, moral, and prudent people, I think we will.
OBX is the best place in NC. I was staying there for 3 months and had the best time of my life! ❤️
I lived on OBX for 17 yrs. best people, crime free, quiet, but lacks good medical care, and jobs.

Used to live in Morrisville. I know statistically it's good but one huge downside is you're close to the airport and it's very loud. I heard planes all day and night and had to move to north Cary to get away from it. I live in a small town in Gaston County outside of Charlotte now. I really like it, especially since there is so much hiking close by. I liked Cary but it was a little pretentious and extremely expensive. One thing they don't tell you is that the schools are great, but they are extremely competitive and my friends told me horror stories of not having a childhood because they were pushed so hard to be perfect. I like being in a more "North Carolina" like town with more down to earth country folk. I am close to Charlotte so I have all that I want but it's easy to get away. The biggest thing I miss about Cary though is diversity. Cary and Morrisville attracted people from all around the world and it was so cool get to experience different cultures.
totally agree!
My friends live near cricket pitch way. It isn't bad there.
@edm15 also from upstate but I’m in Fayetteville
My cousins live there and they hate the airport lol
I have lived in cary morrisville my whole life and I love it. There is so much here and the schools are amazing.
I am a senior, and North Carolina sounds like the life for me! Thank you, much. 😃
I'm from North Carolina. I loved living and working in the Research Triangle Park area. I worked in Cary, and I remember it being a nice area.
I currently live in Morrisville, but I'm moving to Holly Springs as soon as they finish building our house. I've loved living in Morrisville because of how easy it is to get anywhere in the Triangle, and it takes me less than five minutes to get anywhere I need to go to pick up necessities (Target, a bunch of grocery stores, and restaurants are all really close by). We had absolutely zero luck finding a house around here, though. I'm excited to see how Holly Springs goes, it feels like it has a little more despite being a bit further out.
Good luck Brandon! We lived in Holly Springs since 1999 and moved 6 years ago. One of the biggest mistakes of my life. I watched that town explode from literally nothing and now it's one of the best places to live. You will find out very soon why people love living there...
Moved from Connecticut to north carolina awhile ago. Love it here. And I laughed at ct unboxing video you did cause it's true lol glad I came to a state I love and want to raise a family. North carolina
Welcome! I love it here too!
Transitioning from CT as well!
NC is a great state!!! Thanks Nick!!!
I live in Greensboro and although it has it’s problem areas it is still a great place to live with great educational, cultural and recreational activities. Many safe and charming neighborhoods and 3 hours from the beach and the mountains.
Hey Nick ,Loved this Video. I'm in Cornelius in Magnolia Estates right outside of the Peninsula, but my favorite town out of all of these is Davidson. These are all of the best places to live in NC. I like some of the Ashville areas too, but it all depends. I still haven't made it out to the Outer Banks yet, it so far away 5-6 hours.
Personally I think Cornelius gets left out of lists like this because of Davidson . I agree Davidson is the best town in NC hands down.
Western NC is the BEST place.
There is nothing more beautiful than the Carolina blue sky's over the Blue Ridge Mountains and the sunsets over the mountains are breathtaking!
All the people in the small towns and counties in Western NC treat you like they have known you forever and from the first time they meet you they won't forget your name.
Low crime and good people can't beat Western NC
Excellent.Well down.Thank you.
I lived in number 2, Cary for 15 years. It's so true that I seldom had to leave Cary. I lived in downtown and could walk to nearly everything I needed.....groceries, library, bars, city hall, the train station, etc. Everything was within a square mile. Unfortunately, one of those was the mall. It has just been torn down. I really miss living there, but probably couldn't move back due to housing costs. Still, I might consider renting a room in a house so I could enjoy my remaining years. I live in Jacksonville, a military town similar to fayetteville, except we have a beach close by and the crime has been drastically cut from what it was in the 70's and 80s.

Hi. Thanks for the info. How about Pleasant Garden? Wife and I may relocate from California
I lived in Wilmington NC and I loved it. You either have to own your own business or be in the Heath industry in order to afford to live there. I know people from Charlotte and Raleigh that move there and then moved back to where they came from because the cost of living and not a lot of high paying jobs.
Same story in Asheville. Not sure if I've posted on that here or on another video, but my late uncle lived in Asheville for years and fought tooth and nail against the rising costs of living there. Both sides of my family have their roots in Western NC.
I live in historic Wilmington and love it here. I got a tiny home for $300 a month. You are right though you need to have a good job or be in school. Im in school.
Durham does have the 11'8" bridge. It's hard to beat for entertainment.

My sister and I moved to Shallotte, North Carolina 3 years ago. We love love this little town.
Interesting. I lived in Raleigh and you named the town's my Dad, brother and sister all live in today. We all migrated here. You didn't mention the traffic in the triangle and north of Charlotte stinks. Take a look at the other great places in NC to live that aren't around the triangle or Charlottem it a big beautiful state. I live on the coast. Awesome.
Can you give some advice on safe affordable places to live by the coast? Thanks
What about the areas near Gastonia, Kings Mountain, Belmont? Like close to the SC border west of Charlotte. Is that good or bad?
In my opinion Gastonia is pretty crappy, I wouldn’t live there. Belmont has a beautiful downtown and is a nice town. If you’re going west of Charlotte, SC is a great option. Fort Mill is really nice and has some great neighborhoods
Thanks Nick for another great video! I would love to subscribe to your channel, but one can’t subscribe twice. My wife and I love living in Cary.
I know all places you mentioned except Elon, Pinehurst.
I love living in Cary. I have lived in 5 different states in many different places in Northeast. But I like NC so much that I'm staying for a long time!!
If you're planning to move to NC, don't try to bring the same attitude that you want to escape from the other state.
There are lots of great towns and cities in North Carolina he didn’t mention
I live in Huntersville and it's true that the areas around Davidson are amazing. You don't even need to head into Charlotte for anything, which is very good, considering how bad Charlotte has gotten recently.
In actually moving to that area do you know of any local people renting apartments or houses

Good video Nick, I’ve lived in Durham, Raleigh, Apex and currently Holly Springs. I think your list is pretty accurate if you’re looking for places where there are jobs. I’ve been keeping a close eye on the real estate market here a long time. I gotta agree with another commenter, add at least another $100k to the median home prices in all the places you mentioned near the Triangle. Home prices are rising so fast! In Holly Springs it’s already getting harder to find a nice home under $400k. It wasn’t that long ago that Holly Springs was considered living way out in the country 😉
I live in Cary.......definitely concur....Thanks Nick!!!
North Carolina is a very beautiful state , I would consider to live there for the rest of my life
I've lived in NC for my entire 54 years. It's a great state, but with that comes more people moving in...by the droves! Now I'm looking to move to a lower populated state when I retire, which I would inadvertently cause hatred to that states native population for the same reason! 😕
You don't need to move to a lower populated state, just a lower populated area of the state.

Hey Nick, did your car break down? You never made it to Western North Carolina, the beautiful Smoky Mountains, and cities like Asheville.
Asheville use to be a neat mountain town. Today we refer to it as Assville or Trashville. The woke socialist have taken over
As much as I love the Triangle area your list was a bit biased . I also think parts of Winston Salem, Asheville, Wilmington are nice not too mention like dozens of small towns like Southern Pines.
Wilmington has it's rough spots, but it's a great city. Just about any town along the coast could have made the list, like Southport, Beaufort, Manteo. Asheville is nice, but it's too much like Chapel Hill - wealthy, uppity, hippie culture.

Hi Nick! I’m from CA. Admirer of NC. I was wondering why you seem to cast aside Winston-Salem? It seems like such a nice place to live. I love the triangle but it a gotten so expensive in the past year.
In his top 10 worst places to live in the US list, he said the crime and poverty rate is quite high there.
I think Winston-Salem took a big hit with the bank mergers. Wachovia was headquartered there but a lot of the jobs moved elsewhere with the merger with First Union and even more with the merger with Wells Fargo. If it weren’t for the crash I ‘08 I think it would have been a completely different story.
My moms part of the family lives in Raleigh. Definitely a great place. I love NC!

I recently moved to New Bern to be closer to my son (who is in Oriental) after living for the last 34 years between Wilmington and Leland. I have to say that I LOVE NEW BERN! Didn’t like the downtown Denver area. Large homeless population.

Damn brother you do know that NC has a lot of awesome places to life outside of the triangle area. I mean you didn't even do the west side of the state like where I live in Asheville which blows the triangle out of the out of the water.
Hey man we are planning to move from California (north highlands) to Rocky Mount. I’ve been to Rocky mount and have friends who do as well. Is Rocky Mount really that bad? We are ordering a new built right outside of Rocky closer to Nashville.
I live in S. Raleigh near Fuquay-Varina. My kids went to elementary school in Fuquay-Varina, middle school in Holly Springs and high school in Apex. That's how close I am to all of these. I love living here and I feel safe here.
Respectfully Charlotte, Asheville and some coastal towns need way more representation lol NC is a big state with a lot to offer, you could make a half hour video of all the different places to go / see
