- Long have we awaited, Mauga activated. But not anymore. I, like many overwatch 2 gamers had the chance to play the newest tank over the span of blizzcon weekend. Here's a video where I give my thoughts on everything you might ask about him! New main?

The stomp setting enemies on fire would be useful in giving him more lethality and survivability.
Kinda surprising that it doesn’t, given that he’s like visually on fire when he runs.
It always seemed weird to me how Rein's fire strike doesn't set enemies on fire.
Would make sense for Illari too if her damage was lower.
Only reason I don't want this is I'm tired of the "on-fire" effect on my screen....
I said the stomp should to or at least the hit when running at them should for about 2 or 3 seconds, just for more harmony in his kit
If you stomp heroes that can't easily escape you can mow them down anyway when you're that close. I like to play Kiriko, wait until Mauga stomps, then swift step in to support him with healing, suzu and/or kunais to clean up backline squishies. Works pretty well, especially if we get additional help from the rest of the team, preferably a Bap, Ana or Mercy that can support or any hitscan/dive DPS to help clean up.
So what I'm hearing is release Brigitte was like a 25/10
I actually find that Junker Queen has a rather favorable matchup against Mauga. Her speed with commanding shout makes her rather hard to hit, on top of having one of the smallest hit volumes for a tank. It seems counterintuitive, but her rushdown style and passive healing seems to be rather effective against his kit.
Also because junker queen wants to play in the sweet spot where mauga both can’t use double minigun AND a single mini gun isn’t good enough (you aren’t in a poke phase)
And her ult counters him too
Can she even ult inside that cage? Its mobility
Sig is also a good counter to mauga, two mini guns its just two bastion turrets for free hp
I can confirm this isn't true... she just gets deleted if she gets close, which is what JQ tends to do 😂
One complaint that I had was that his charge feels clunky if you cancel it. For comparison, Rein has a relatively smooth recovery if you cancel out of charge, sliding forward a bit and giving you back control. But Mauga just sort of freezes in place and the camera zooms back into first person POV.
It feels smooth if you cancel it as its going into Leap, but otherwise, yeah, it feels weird
First time I canceled his charge made me laugh bc it looks so goofy the way he just stops then the camera zooms back in after a second lmao

I can't describe enough how good it feels to play pharah with mauga on your team. It's like having a Graviton but the enemy CANT shoot you
I think his fire minigun would be alot more forgiving if it just lit enemies on fire after firing for a second or two.
it takes just under half a second of fire to set a target on fire (the 10-12 bullets at fire rate of 18 shots per second)
bigger trouble is that you need to hit that amount of bullets in a certain amount of time
@@somedude4087Yeah that seems to be the issue tbh. Sometimes even at close range it would feel like it takes a bit for the fire to kick in because the spread makes all of the bullets to miss

agree with pretty much all your thoughts. As an Ana main I do worry post Mauga release that Ana will be doing so well because of being strong both against and with Mauga that she's just going to get nerfed into the ground
Ana desperately needs a rebalance, for the sake of pretty much everyone else. Biotic grenade just needs to reduce healing, not completely deny it. Until they make that change, nothing will change and she'll keep posing the same problem. They can reduce its cooldown afterwards, or up the area of effect, or maybe make her rifle do 75 again like a few seasons ago. But the nade is the primary culprit to her imbalance, changing it will make so many other comps actually playable because you won't have to worry about being completely crippled every fight without a Zarya or Kiriko.
She needs to get nerfed into the ground
She needs to be nerfed though. That ana nerf completely missed the mark. Hitting anti on a tank isn't skillful at all, longer cooldowns aren't going to fix that. Either reduce time for tanks or straight up rework that nade to reduce healing which should still be strong.

@@tau-5794 This is the realest take. A lot of supports need fundamental changes not just number tweaks like we got this patch. Ana's nade needs to be a healing reduction, kiriko needs the invulnerability removed from suzu, and probably more. But those 2 abilities are going to be a fundamental problem for balancing until they are changed.

I like the idea to allow movement abilities while still keeping players trapped within the bounds of the cage fight. Honestly, I was surprised that movement abilities were disabled, because the visual of the chain doesn’t suggest to me that it disallows movement. I could see it disallowing movement that phases you out (Fade/Wraith) or takes you out of the map (Recall/Meteor Strike), while still permitting movement that involves physically traversing the space within the cage.
The chains also keep you from falling. There's been a few times where I'd just sit in a pit dangling, knowing I'm dead as soon as the ult ends.
Mightve been for coding purposes as well. Any sort of TP ability can just leave if allowed. Tracer could blink out, since she TPs on blink. What are we doing about Recall? Sombra could translocate fully out.
It's hard to make exceptions and only cancel phase/TP ability, because then it is inconsistent with other Tank Ults and the Hinder debuff.
I kinda like that he shuts down mobility with it tbh. You could use it as an antidive tool, for example

I found Dva to be a hardcore counter for mauga, since he’s so reliant on hitting tanks to heal defense matrix starves him of that ability and makes it easy for my team/rockets to shred him. And I actually liked my odds as mauga against sigma quite a bit, especially with a kiriko to suzu me if I got rocked, charge makes it easy to pass his shield without getting rocked and cardiac arrest + passive overhealth means sig can’t do much to me while I focus his squishies. Could just be my experience though.

I can agree that his single-fire damage was probably only lackluster due to spread, some small buffs to offset current weaknesses could either be stomp igniting or cardiac granting some ammo. Though they could also go the healthier route of addressing what causes those weaknesses being mostly nade denying healing and -cleanse- instead being invuln
Fun Tip: Even at close range with dual chains going. Aim for the head. The right gun crits anywhere, but the left doesn't.
(And I don't have total confirmation, but I think the right gun crits for more on heads while burning. IDK how to bring up numbers in the training range)
I feel like he is a lot squishier than most of the other tanks, healers in overtime work to keep him alive
This was such a great video. Honestly stated everything I thought as well. I def think with some quality of life changes to the character he’s gonna be in a great spot. Unfortunately though he’ll always be gate kept by Ana but I think that’s a good thing.
Ana shouldn't gate keep any characters, if a single character just stops you from playing the game, then that is a problem.
@@bigfudge2031 I do agree Ana nade needs to be changed to reduced healing but there are a lot of hero’s that gate keep each other.
Braindead take for one character to gatekeep half the tanks. No other character comes anywhere near this power level

my experience with Mauga was, does an absurd amount of damage BUT its inconsistent against squishy targets as it's hard to constantly setting them on fire unless you are Bastion Torbjörn or another tank.
So you end up doing 20k of damage in a match for only shooting the other tank, feeding their supports and getting nothing mostly done.

From what I've played of him which is quite a bit, he's really feast or famine and takes a lot of game knowledge on when to get in and get offensive. He is quite dependent on his supports. He's fun, I like him, but I don't know if he's good for the health of the game. I think he perpetuates the put everything into the tank to destroy it mentality.
I would honestly love to see them do this with every upcoming hero. The ability to get early feedback from the general player base probably does wonders for balance.
While Mauga seems strong, I fear he will have a hard time finding an identity. He is yet another brawl tank, doing well against dive and poor against poke, as do all other brawl tanks. Maybe he will be the strongest brawl tank, but if he isn't, then I don't see him having any sort of niche besides "I REALLY don't like this Winston on the other team, and have decided against playing the other anti-scientist tanks".
Unsure if this is much of a problem though if people still play him for his depth and fun, just a league level problem. Excited for the Mauga compilations, featuring him diving the enemy widow using extremely niche charge spots.
would be interesting if he also instantly inflicted burn/crit damage if he was lit on fire himself, it would incentivise Ashe, Mauga and Torb to think before using their abilities on him.
He feels OP when uncountered and useless when countered. I thought we were supposed to be moving away from hard counters. I know powercreep is the root issue but still, this isn't helping.

there's also a thing where firing one/two guns slows you down for 20/40% respectively
so even more reason not to fire both at all times
and his passive isn't exactly a little over health
its 40% of the crit damage
so the stomp sweetspot does give overhealth (32 per target, since crit stomp does 80 damage) and any damage increase, means mauga is more surviveable so long as there are things to shoot at
and thing about his guns
due to left gun lighting up targets on fire and right gun critting burning targets, he can chew through deployables, including the LW tree, sadly that does not apply to barriers...so long as you don't have ashe or torb to set those on fire
The overhealth caps at a maximum, though.
That said, if Mauga is actively taking damage, yeah it can go a long way.
@@penrilfake yea there is a maximum of 150 overhealth but still getting 25% (if not more depending on support selection) more overhealth isn't nothing
Currently his passive I think has the same problem JQ did on release. It's just not sustaining enough to actually matter much in a fight. And as a slower, bigger target without the same burst damage combos, Mauga naturally takes a lot more damage in a fight than Queen.

which is a 30% damage reduction and 60% lifesteal for both him and his team
that together with his passive results in...the usual stare offs between two maugas where they deal about same damage to eachother that they recover from damaging eachother

@@tau-5794 184.275 dps they do to eachother on average (assuming left gun crits about 25% of the time) after including damage reduction from aura 110.565 is the lifesteal per second and 73.71 is the overhealth generation per second
so...they...just barely kill eachother, this is all obviously theoretical and just math which doesn't happen cuz other teammates and heals exist but still

You forgot to mention breaking his shield ends the ult, I was able to end his ult with storm arrow and bastion turret pretty consistently
Additionally, Mauga can headshot horse through fortify, which can really delete her. Same with ball, bastion, or any other hero without a large head hit box

mans has 300 bullets, but they cant give ball 100 bullets
100 bullets on ball would be overkill. more of his power is in the diplacement, boop dmg, slams, and general mobility making him unkillable if played right. mauga doesn't have that.
Another buff to cardiac overdrive would be that he could still get healed with that through anti heal however he still can't get healed by his teammates unless kiriko cleanses him.
Baptiste is also potentionally strong counter. Window in his face after he uses cardiac arrest. Or walk into the Cage, and place the "NO U" window while he's trapped
It’s really interesting that you say rein is his biggest counter. I was under the impression rein would get hard stomped
I totally agree it just felt bad to even try to shoot anyone other than the enemy tank
maunga's potential in poke is so slept on. not because he himself is insane at poking but because zero dive heros beat mauga. mauga's whole kit bones dive comps.

Would like to see spread reduced in general, with maybe slightly less dps. That way certain tank matchups won’t be as polarising, and Mauga can better poke down squishies.
Also overrun should definitely set people on fire. That way, you can start gaining overhealth immediately after charging.

The biggest tank counter is Zarya. The bubble cleanses burn and can really mess up his gameplay loop. Kiriko is equally stressful for the same reason, especially mauga v mauga. Zarya is also basically guaranteed to get full charge and use of her bubbles if she rushs down the mauga, as he won't be able to heal himself with a bubble in his face.
I'm not counting zarya to be as consistent of a counter as the others since mauga is one of the few tanks that can just solo her past a bubble. She'll be very reliant on her team in the match up.
Mauga is a armorless tank with a relatively weak 5 second defensive button on a 15 second cooldown. Purple, dead. Discord, melts. Just getting focused, still dead. Mostly played support _with_ Mauga, and I feel like he just dies when he goes in and he requires a ridiculous amount of support attention. I can see overdrive providing a ton of team sustain in a rush comp, but he himself is still pretty weak. I'd like to see something like, I don't know, a couple hundred temporary armor from charge to give him some buffer when entering similar to ball.
Charge needs to break Mei wall as it’s fiery for some counter play against Mei in the tank class

Yeah most gameplay in general in Overwatch you want to take care of squishies before focusing Tanks, but Mauga's hitbox is so big you can take him down pretty easy from range if he doesn't have pocket healing. If he does have support healing though he's a monster, doing so much damage it's crazy.

Honestly Left click could ignite on 7 hits, and feel better. Those three extra bullets you would need to land on a dps or support make a ton of difference.
So many times they would escape me because I couldn't get the ignite to trigger quick enough.
That, or allow the effect trigger to last longer (I.e. more time between shots without losing heat build up)
I played a lot of Zarya against Mauga his weekend and it worked really well. I wouldn't call it a hard counter but it was easy enough to just walk past him and melt his team while he charged my beam for me
Basically, much like the Talon Heavy Assault, he plays how you'd think.
Big health pool + pew pew = fun as hell.
I am SHOCKED that you can't shoot the little device in the centre of the ultimate, when I saw his gameplay trailer I shouted how nuts it was, until I saw that device in the middle.
Well.... now that we've gotten to play with him. Yeaaaah. (A friend compared it to Zarya's ult and just, no, not even close, it's crazy how much better it is)
Amazing video. When I saw his kit I disliked it so much and was worried by the release of Mauga since adding Tank counters in the actual state of the game is not the way to go (saying that as a non Tank player). I hope they get this type of feedback and tune down his tank busting capabilities and amp his squishy killing ones

If they don't wanna make him just completely invincible at brawl range they need to buff his poke, lower damage falloff when firing with one weapon.

Junkrat can be pretty scary for mauga if the Junkrat can hit the large hitbox from range his burst damage helps his tank kill mauga fairly easily

Tree in a big full team gulag also guarantees the fight stays around the tree, and you can also throw tree into enemy gulags from outside to provide some cover and healing.

His Ult is fun to counter. We killed everyone in his cage with an Orisa Ult, Dva Bomb, and Mei freeze (not all at once).
Personally i would make his charge have a bit more height to it for a bit extra mobility and being able to behop at the end if the charge if you cancel it

A small change that could be tried would be to make his e cleanse status effects on activation like sombra translocator. It helps with the hard Ana counter while still leaving Ana as a strong counterpick
How does that make her a counter pick when his best ability cleanses her best ability. Since sleep already last shorter on Tanks in the first place.

i would add zarya to good matchups. You cant shoot her to heal yourself while bubble and even if you ignore her she will still somehow get charge and kill you while u cant fight back. and if u count bubbles and shoot while she has none by the time you igniylte her she can probably already bubble again and get rid of it

I would say that the 1.35x fire rate multiplier while shooting both guns should go down by quite a tad, he doesn't need to do 328 dps (about 350-360 with the fire damage) on tanks without hitting any headshots. (Yes, most people didn't realize but there's actually a multiplier when shooting both guns)
The disparity of that damage to the about 40-50 dps he does at mid-range considering the missed shots and that it's pretty hard to lit enemies on fire is too large. He should be just a bit more dangerous at mid-range and a lot less at close quarters.
The idea about ultimates can be cancelled is stuck in my head. I have played Overwatch since 2018. But I haven't thought about this until you said. Same thing with bodyblocking Wrecking Ball. Every time I face with one of these "features" in the game, my ass is burning down the chair.

He heals and gains overhealth from his own crits, but he needs a more consistent way to set people on fire to land those crits in my opinion
I just wish that little hop he did actually let him hup ledges, like it seems worse than just normal jumping despite the animation implying otherwise

Take the ana balancing approach on Mauga, nerf his dmg vs tanks by 30% maybe then you dont „have to“ focus on them as much

I think his stomp should be independent of his charge ability maybe put it on his E(cardiac overdrive) would also give his E a more immediate effect giving u hp if u hit someone with the stomp damage also stomp should have a tad more verticality no more then a meter tho and stomp should do more damage the higher u fall from then also nerf his range damage so hes better at the close to mid range of play kinda like sigma
I think Ana nade should be nerfed by 25% or 50% reduced healing but increase how long the effects lasts on someone. I believe Maui suffers the most from being Antied then any other tank cuz his kit is surrounded by an aggressive play style that can be completely shut down by Ana’s nade.
Not to mention dva being able to eat his main feature half the time and ulting when you ult.
I think it would be fair if his E the overdrive would cleanse him. But only when the ability activities and not for the full duration so the enemy would have something to play around it. But also allowing mauga to not get destroyed by ana. And the cleanse is not immunity and only for himself.
Ult definitely needs a big nerf with a slightly buff to his base kit.

I have to say, I thoroughly dislike how high and consistent Mauga's damage output is. The only other tanks that are comparable to him in terms of raw damage output would be Zarya, Roadhog and Junkerqueen - all of whom have a degree of inconsistency to their damage output. Mauga feels like a beefy Sojourn at times, and playing against one Sojourn is hard enough, especially for characters with large hitboxes. I like the concept of the minigun combo, though. I just think he needs a slight damage nerf with his primary and secondary fire. Also his ult is *painful* to play against. I agree with Yeatle's take on removing the movement ability debuff. Hopefully that alongside a damage nerf would stop it feeling so hopeless.
Combine Mauga's Incendiary m61 vulcan cannon with Ashe's Dynamite that combination wrecks Brigitte Dva and Reinhardt. Cons heavy spread on his twin M61s if both the left and right one are fired together
I have no problem with 2 guns being inaccurate since the DPS is very high but single fire should 100% be more accurate.
Also if he gets caught without his E then Reaper usually feasts on him.
Your decent aim makes mauga look playable (but even aimbot cant save you from nade)

for tank counters i had some trouble with orisa and dva, mainly due to matrix and both javelin abilities
I deleted every orisa I came up against. She just doesn't have the dps to out kill Mauga if he's also being pocketed whereas he does. Orisa is a big target, wants to be in your face, and can be crit when on fire even in fortify, meaning Mauga just farms overhealth and damage, forcing enemy supports to pocket even the orisa 24/7. If she ults, charge out. Fortify over? Mauga ult. If orisa overextends even a little bit she dies, which is something almost no other tank can punish
8:00 Actually snipers aren't much of a threat because you're hitscan. If you're headshotting a sniper from range to set them on fire and then right click you heal through most sniper damage pretty well, at least enough to survive before the sniper is forced to back off lest they die
True but I feel like if you can't isolate the angles when there are headshots from multiple snipers moving around is kind of hard, and you need to get in close to be effective, whereas another tank would just have a shield or better mobility.
Nah widows and ashes dominate Mauga at their preferred distance. Even though he is hitscan, at that range he does so little damage and because they have small hitboxes, he misses a lot of shots (similar to bastion turret at range, but way less damage). It even takes a long time to set them on fire, and supports have an easy time keeping the snipers alive. Plus Mauga's head hitbox is the size of Mt Everest
Edit: He only gets 4 overhealth per crit, and you aren't getting that much (even if you have your E active) to negate basically any damage being output against you. I played him the entire day he was out and am a tank main, and compared to literally every other tank, he gets headshot the easiest and is deleted by snipers
You underestimate how bad the bullet spread is. If we're talking sniper sightlines like first or third point havana you'd be lucky to get them half health before you're zero.

From my experience I’ve melted reins and felt bad doing it because rein is litteraly me but Mauga is also me
I thought mei was a good pick with and against mauga. The wall singles/ cuts him off from his/ your team, ice block cleanses and heals with imunity and the ultimate in the cage fight just ends him.
Zen and ana are the best supports vs him. Discord and tranc just negates his dive and ulti. Ana's sleep/ purple just eats him alive and requires you to run kiriko as a must pick.

I agree with your suggested changes, but another nerf to the ultimate I'd like to see is for it to end if he dies. That was honestly how I expected it to work in the first place, and I feel like the intention for the ultimate is very clearly to force a fight that you are confident you can win with all your buffs. I feel like you shouldn't be allowed to pop ult at 5 health, die immediately, and still get fight-winning value from it. Making sure the heavy advantage you get is enough for you to survive the fight should be part of the decision you have to make with his ult.

@@LightNJTZarya grav has a much smaller AOE though. Mauga can easily trap 2-3 people with his ult while a Zarya'd be lucky to even get 3 people in hers
cage lasts three times as long and blocks a lot of abilitys from outside and has better range, for most things it's just a better grav. While it is destroyable that does take a while and you can't really ignore mauga to shoot the while while you are caught with him @@LightNJT
