Doug on Tucker, Weak Big Eva | Stories Are Soul Food Episode 147

  • Nate and Brian discuss Doug Wilson's gospel-filled appearance on the Tucker Carlson Network. Turns out, this isn't Doug's first big media rodeo, and it makes perfect SASF fodder to discuss the different characters that come out of the woodwork after such an event. The guys discuss the "I don't agree with Doug on everything, but" guy, the "criticize you publicly and beg for private favors" guy, and of course the outright haters vs. the tough-minded allies (we know who you are, SASF kingdom). Oh, and of course the Big Eva folks -- who are actually Tiny Eva -- who are unwilling to mention Doug's name for fear they might get cooties. But we don't care about their tiny walled commune -- because the Gospel is so much bigger. As many a SASF episode does, the conversation launches into a discussion of how not to be a terrible dad who, for example, abdicates on his kids' homeschooling and then blames his wife for the bad result. The episode ends with a classic sign-out: "Go hard, suffer, keep the Sabbath. This has been Stories Are Soul Food."

I was one of those people who witlessly posted Doug Wilson quotes approvingly only to be pulled into the Pastor's office to be warned that "He teaches the patriarchy, which is borderline heretical." I had no idea what he was talking about when he said it but I did my research and made a lot of enemies in the process. That statement was the beginning of the rift that cost me every church relationship, including my own sister who is likely still giving mini-sermons/poetry readings during the "special music" portion of the worship service.
I don't know Doug Wilson personally. But I still owe him a debt of gratitude. And your books aren't too bad either.

      @Sarutaru06 , similar for me.
My wife left me, and in pastoral counseling, the pastor identified me as a heavy-handed patriarch, which puzzled me.
I came to discover my wife, her family, and the pastor all hold to the "Therapeutic Gospel". (Though, they profess to be Bible-believing and Reformed).
In that gospel, a husband cannot tell his wife the truth if it hurts her feelings, even for necessary issues, e.g., the truth about her, or her family.
(Doug Wilson and Joe Rigney describe this in their RUclips video.)
Also in that gospel, a husband should very rarely exercise patriarchal authority, over matters in which he and his wife disagree.
(Joel Webbon describes this in a recent video.)
The "Therapeutic Gospel" is fake Christianity.
My sister is estranged from me as well. She's an Evangelical and a politician.
She holds more to feminism than the Bible, regarding the role of women in political leadership, and the role of women in homemaking.

I discovered Doug Wilson about 19-20 yrs ago through Table Talk magazine…thoroughly enjoyed his writing…but it wasn’t until the PLANdemic that I began to pay attention to his courageous stance in the face of oppressive persecution by an over reaching government…it’s Doug’s sincere laughter that made me buckle down and do some serious self examination re: eschatology and socio/political engagement…I’ve visited Christ Church Moscow twice in recent years and can truly say that while Doug may be known mostly through social media, his passion is shepherding his flock…

The Tucker show was the first time I'd heard of Doug Wilson. I looked into him. You're so right about being able to relax when someone tells you the truth of the Gospel the way he did. My anxiety finally went away once I realized even the desire to want Jesus comes first from God. Most of the others are only for their own ideas. Doug backs up everything with God alone. I hope Tucker runs the complete segment that was on TCN again. We're hungry for it.

Guys, this was indeed soul food. How nourishing it is to listen to the faithful son of a faithful gospel minister sing the well deserved praise of his father for his father’s long career of serving his Savior and His body. The generations of Wilsons serving faithfully is a beautiful picture of what the blessings of the Lord look like. It’s all for His glory!

Maybe (definitely) just because I’m pregnant, but listening to Nate recall his father laughing in the face of mockers and evil doers made me cry. Absolutely loved hearing him tell that story! Soul food indeed.

    Churchill...or Jephthah:
And so it was, when the people of Ammon made war against Israel, that the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob. Then they said to Jephthah, “Come and be our commander, that we may fight against the people of Ammon.” So Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “Did you not hate me, and expel me from my father’s house? Why have you come to me now when you are in distress?”

As a South African who has enjoyed DW for a long long time, I found the comments on X quite bizarre - such as 'I liked Dougs input despite not always agreeing ... etc'. It struck me as symptomatic of the very problems afflicting America & the west which Doug described so coherently. Its like 'great to see you again Jack & thanks for the coffee even though I dont agree with you about ...'

I read the book Recovering the Lost Tools of Learning some thirty years ago when my children were very young. I am eternally grateful for the influence of Douglas Wilson on my life. His writings helped me develop and implement a Biblical philosophy of education as I homeschooled our three children and defended my right to do so in this socialist state of Massachusetts.
May God continue to use this brilliant servant of His to challenge, encourage and inspire many to live boldly for the King.

There is a story, well in my neck of the woods, about what is happening with food pantry food. The donations, that the grocery stores get full write off for, are redirecting the flow of food to food pantries. By the upper echelon of, executives that are not affected by the food they are taking away from others, I am affected and there is something going on. I’ll tell you more if you want to hear it. If not, someone else will want to hear it. So, let me know.

Enjoyed this talk and I’m giving grace by not assuming too much, but, here’s my struggle…saying Johnny “needs” peer based, evolutionary based, age segregated education because homeschool is not working, is usurping the man’s responsibility to lead his family well. There is nothing the “school” can do that cannot be done at home. God’s primary design is for home discipleship. I’m not against a secondary solution for extenuating circumstances, but I am against a “Christian” version of evolutionary designed schooling.
