Capitalism Doesn't Produce Great Art | Stories Are Soul Food Episode 174
Просмотров 8719 часов назад
As a conservative artist who's been working in the mainstream since 2007, Nate has an artistic opinion that's going to get conservative folks angry: Capitalism doesn't produce great art. Lest you join this commenter who said "this take is so dumb it got me to engage, brilliant", if you care about this topic, you need to listen to the whole episode. Nate's argument is that the incentives of capi...

This episode is a justification for the Stories Are Soul Food manifesto. First, Brian makes Nate react to the worst SASF episode from last year; then, Brian makes Nate react to the 2025 Golden Globes winners (The Brutalist, Emilia Perez, The Substance, Flow, etc.); and lastly Brian makes Nate justify the importance of story in a time when everybody else seems to be crazy. Kinda seems like we sh...

Longtime listeners will get that particular feeling in the pit of their stomach when they hear Nate start talking about life in a particularly bleak way you know, the "make that heartbeat count because we're all going to die" kind of way. Brian has named this manifestation of his podcast co-host "Black Pill Nate." For today's episode, Black Pill Nate goes on a rampage against those who desperat...

Listeners of this podcast know that when Christmastime rolls around, the SASF podcast likes to focus on the less appreciated Bible stories that lead up to the birth of the Christ:. You may remember past Advent episodes on the Levite's concubine, Onan, and Tamar. This year, the guys discuss the place of the Jewish people in the Christmas story. Why? Well, nobody needs a reason to talk about the ...

    Can you address this? The Quad Mosaics shows the image on the shroud has a different chemical composition the rest of the shroud. Sunlight could not do this. Also you can see the bottom left corner where the C14 sample was taken from has a perfect dark green rectangle showing a repair. The actual details of the C14 test were forced to be release and it shows the significance level is 1.4, anything less than 5 is to be tossed and considered a bad test. They found the numbers were manipulated to reach the 5 in the published results. This means the C14 dating is worthless. I also read the shroud was found in 55 AD in a Byzantine outer wall that was being repaired...hidden by the person who is in charge of keeping relics. At that point all paintings of Jesus were the same....large eyes, beard, hair parted in the middle and longer on the left shoulder just like the shroud. Before that Jesus did not have a beard or long hair. A Byzantine emperor put the exact Jesus image on a coin taking himself off. Have you looked into these things?

    Surely not. It’s better to phrase it, “Ambition doesn’t create great art.” The problem is that our freedom has given rise to us quickly getting to bottom line and to money. Only Marxists try to divine bad intentions by freedom-loving capitalists. But capitalism doesn’t ’require’ you being motivated by ambition & money. It can instead simply provide you with the freedom to create and this allows good men motivated by duty to provide for a community. That’s not an anti-capitalism scenario.

    • @storiesaresoulfood4643
      @storiesaresoulfood4643 2 дня назад

      The problem we discuss (which has ruined our streaming services) has nothing to do with ambition and everything to do with money being the only incentive.

  • @Sarutaru06

    This sounds an awful lot like what Doug Tennapel was saying on the episode where you discussed an artist's motivation with him. It also reminds me of the discussion of a Leonardo Da Vinci Biography on the Book Pile (please don't think I'm patient enough to read a biography) where they made jokes about him wanting to find a patron so he could get paid and do whatever he wanted. So, basically, good art can only happen when it's both produced and valued for excellence rather than pragmatism. I don't know why anyone would disagree with this episode.

  • @killdamnation

    I’m not sure he understands what capitalism is. Free markets and the innovation they empowered helped to bring entertainment that was unreachable to mass audiences and has delivered countless artistic masterpieces.

    Everything you said makes complete sense, except for the fact that the recent shroud carbon testing says its 2,000 years old. Which disproves your entire theory of the bishop saying a local mesival artist admitted to faking it. Maybe that happened but maybe the bishop told him to lie. So, what is your opinion now?

      Books still sell, the are plenty of artists that make a living from it, it will never be as much as the film industry but once you have a dedicated fanbase even if it's a humble amount that is enough and those books that are phenomenal extremely popular pieces of work you don't even need a lot of people to buy it or even read it because a studio will want to buy the film rights. You can would write something on the back of a public bathroom door and if it was good enough someone will spread it through word of mouth. All always about finding your audience some artists don't find their audience until they are dead. Vincent Van Gogh, H.P Lovecraft some go unnoticed until their Old and have given up.

    I'm a skeptic myself. However there is the Sudarium Cloth where the blood stains match exactly that was on the face. There is a strip that was sown back onto the Shroud, that would have been used to wrap around the body over the shroud. That makes 3 cloths.

    The results of two Bayesian analyses challenge the dismissal of the Shroud's authenticity. Under the assumption that the antique and medieval hypotheses hold equal likelihood, the probability that the Shroud of Turin is the burial cloth of Jesus of Nazareth emerges as remarkably high, reaching 99%. (From a paper by Tristan Casabianca “Systematic Evaluation of Recent Research on the Shroud of Turin).

    This is no where near the epicness of getting kicked out of a class, but one of my lit. assignments was writing 'a letter to an invading alien.' I was inspired to use Moses's petition for it, ( think I got an ok grade) but the teachers personal note was, "Would have like to see more of your own words." At that moment, I wished I had written, "Welcome back LORD! I feel that took long enough, but what would You like us to do now?" 😂
