This is what Sunderland used to look like...

  • I was very kindly lent a huge folder full of Edwardian postcards; featuring North East England scenes from Sunderland, Whitburn Village and Marsden.
They were lent to me by Heritage Print Co, a brand new small business based in Sunderland, selling prints of restored vintage adverts, postcards and photographs around the North East of England - celebrating particularly the design and style of the first half of the 20th Century.
I was captivated by the Roker and Seaburn postcards, especially seeing their favourite holiday spots during the heyday of the British seaside. Much of the pictures were familiar and felt like going home, but I absolutely loved the musings on the back to see if the weather was holding up on their chosen beach day!

My parents and older siblings were born in Sunderland (I was born in Yorkshire) and we spent all our summers and many weekends throughout the year in Sunderland. As kids in the sixties we were down at the beach all day every day. I have so many happy memories of my childhood spent there, made special now as my parents and aunts and uncles have been gone for many years and can now only keep in touch with my cousins through emails and video chat. Thank you for sharing the pictures ❤❤

Absolutely love this !! Your narration is brilliant, hearing stories of the bygone era is so interesting. You brought them to life and can just imagine the people writing those postcards.xx❤

Very nice to see Roker & Seaburn again, as a Sunderland ex pat I haven't been there for many many years. My mum used to take me to the Bungalow Cafe at Roker then on to the 'shows' at Seaburn, happy days eh :)

Remember sitting on the beach with me mar and aunt Mary, Aunt Mary had lost a finger during WW2 at the 'munitions factory in Brum. Getting in a flask of hot ' watta ' for the sisters to dunk in their tea bags and the radio playing Donnie Osmond's Puppy Love.

I love 'Then and now' videos. It's amazing that things that look as if they have been there for decades are actually fairly recent.
Ghostly messages from the past too.
Where did Cannon Ball Rocks get their name from??

Cannon ball limestone is the rare rock formation that exists at Roker.

Kathryn, great presentation! In the icon of Sunderland they have a photo album of pictures etc of the cafe and the seafront. Apologies if you have seen it but the one of the construction of the north pier seems quite rare!

Oh that's interesting to know! I think people came all over the country for the sea air, as it was thought to be good for the health!
