Blast Beach, Digging Deeper

  • This is a multi-media based project based around and informed by interviews with communities who are living around and/or influenced by Blast Beach, Seaham. Over a 6 month period, varying individuals were interviewed to create a documentary that highlights the influence of the coast upon the people who live and are influenced by it. Geologists, Artists, Miners and local community members will be interviewed about the coast and its meaning and influence upon their work, practice and everyday lives.
    This is a collaborative piece between The University of Sunderland, Durham University, Seascapes, EDAN and local Seaham Miners.
    Commissioned by Sea AIR, part of Seascapes Co/Lab the creative engagement project for Seascapes: Tyne to Tees Shores to Seas

    My Grandad and my Uncle used to walk the plank at the blast. Fearless! When I was a kid in the 60's we used to walk along the cliffs. I'm 58 now and still go there. There's something strange and magical about the place.

    Thank you that was so interesting to watch. I'm moving to Ryhope next week, I can't wait to explore the coastline and this beach.

    My brother in law is from the Durham area he worked in the mines as a surveyor he's living in Ireland now
